Careful Application of Gems for Papa (Malefic) Graha
when the gem has no effect, Seva will help
Q:
I have rashi lagna of Makara.
Should I wear the Mahaneelam, a Blue Sapphire, to strengthen my vitality?
A:
No, in my opinion, this is not a sensible prescription.
I realize that it is customary in India to use this simple method of prescribing the gem to match the lagna lord. However, it is simplistic to think that the gem for the lagnesha is beneficial in every case.
When the lagnesha is a natural malefic, i.e. for Mesha, Vrischika, Makara, and Kumbha lagna, the natural ratna causes more problems than it fixes
I recommend for Shani-ruled lagnas, to utilize the gems for lord of putra bhava or dharma bhava.
Either budha-ratna (emerald) or shukra-ratna (diamond) presuming that those budha and/or shukra are not otherwise damaged.
Gems for lord of the two bhaga houses will give much better results for the shani-ruled lagnas.
For Kuja-ruled lagnas, vedik coral stone is also too dangerous unless there are extenuating circumstances (such as supervised work in tantrik yoga). Again the jewel for lords of putra bhava or dharma bhava are safer and more pleasant.
For Mesha lagna, Ravi-ratna (rubi) or 'pukhraj' (yellow sapphire).
For Vrischika lagna, pukhraj or the soma-ratna, vedik pure Pearl.
Carat weight: for Rubi (or diamond) approx. 2 carats is ideal. For pukhraj (or shani-ratna), 3-4 carats. For coral or pearl,
Conversation about Gems with a mature female in midst of her 19-year Mahadasha of Kumbha Shani, highly dignified in Karma Bhava
"Interesting you've been wearing Shani (Saturn) colors since the onset of your Saturn mahadasha! I'd say your yogakaraka Saturn is your *best* planet.
Very strong in Kumbha (Aquarius) in kendra and vargottama! -- so that Shani's dasha makes the 10th rashi of leadership and the 6th navamsha of selfless service very powerful!
Shani gives eccentricity and scientific genius... and also superior in karma-dharma bhava -the career-vocation-public service 10th house. So your commitment to serve by bringing advanced scientific knowledge to the public is very strong in Shani mahadasha!
Don't worry too much about a blue sapphire. First of all, your Saturn being in its home sign of Kumbha is already very strong, so gems will not assist it. Gems only strengthen weak planets.
Secondly, Saturn in your chart rules what is called a "badhaka" house. For fixed signs rising (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) the 9th house is a troublesome house and the 9th lord - for you, Saturn - has some troublesome qualities which we would not want to exacerbate. In your case since you are a religious person strengthening the badhaka lord might cause conflict with the guru or the ancient traditions - and there's no need for that!
Not only are prescribed gems tremendously expensive, but quite frequently they don't work. 99% of gems in this world, including - very unfortunately - prescribed remedial gems - have been heat-treated by greedy vendors who use high heat to brighten stone color and fuse cracks. Heat-treating unfortunately renders a remedial gemstone completely ineffective. It's a sad fact of Kali Yuga.
IMO, it would only be possible to guarantee the effectiveness of the stone if one could control the stone from the moment of mining to the auspicious moment of placement on one's skin. There are some small family gem mines in India/the Himalaya which are pure in this way... but it's dicey to follow that pure gem all the way from Sri Lanka to small-town USA!
Not only that, your Saturn is quite strong enough - there is no need to strengthen it further unless you wanted to abandon *all* personal attachment and become a pure servant of the people.
I think you are far too sensual for that! Better to strengthen your queenly Moon - with a pearl! Luckily, pearls don't get heat-treated, so they can be quite effective.
A large natural pearl set in silver on a silver chain, chain length to allow the pearl to rest against the skin on the center point of your 4th chakra, would be very nice and helpful. (Vedic gems as you know are worn under your clothes.)
The better remedies IMO are pujas to the planetary deities and internal purification via taking vows, compassionate action, and profound acceptance. In our era the ego is our strongest transformational power source.
Used poorly of course it creates spiritual disaster - but used consciously, ego-driven commitment to make specific changes in the life practice, especially the commitment to guarantee pure motivation for all actions, is *much* more effective than any outside source such as a gem.
Stones and remedies: these are traditional in Jyotisha and widely prescribed in India, and increasingly here in the USA. I know how to prescribe them but I rarely do it for two reasons. The first reason is that the remedial power of the gems depends on their clarity and color. 99% of gems in India and everywhere else in the world have been heat-treated to increase their color and seal cracks, but the heat-treating completely destroys their curative powers.
Unfortunately, it is a major challenge to control Jyotisha gem quality in our world. There are Vedic gemologists in India and USA who will swear that their gems are pure, but often they must buy their gems through many middlemen. Having lived in India, I believe all gem sources to be corrupt.
One exception to my dour and grumpy view is Bill Kent in Canada, who is a reputable & religious gemologist. Bill's gems are authentic Vedic gems. He personally travels to Sri Lanka mines where he has decades-long relationships with the producers.
http://www.jyotishgem.com/ Victoria, BC, Canada - Bill Kent, highly recommended!
But aside from Bill and a few other ethical Jyotisha gem dealers, I'm sorry to say that the temptation to profit via the heat-treating is too strong for most small gem merchants to withstand. You would want to decide for yourself if you had faith in the gem dealer before making a significant purchase.
The second reason is that Jyotisha gems are generally quite expensive. A non-included, 2+ carat yellow sapphire for Jupiter or a pure 2-3+ carat diamond for Venus or a good emerald for Mercury will cost thousands of dollars. Small stones and imperfect stones do not work at all.
Effective remedial gems must be large and perfect, and they must be set in pure gold or pure silver, so that the stone touches the skin. Furthermore, there are strict rules to put on the ring or pendant at a very specific time and do puja (prayers) for several hours (or weeks) before and after applying the stone. Very few Americans unless they live in ashrams can do all this right, thus the whole project is expensive and easy to fail.
But still everyone loves a magic bullet, so the gems are very popular. I myself recommend meditation, visualization, and service as most efficacious means of purification. But those are obviously less glamorous and less popular :) " [end of conversation]
