This young female teenager
suffered "Toxic Shock Syndrome" in the late 1960's, before physicians were
trained to recognize the symptoms. She lived in a military encampment.
Bewildered by the
rampant & apparently deadly sepsis, field surgeons (who were not accustomed
to treating females) removed her entire lower intestine. She was not expected to
survive.
After a long & erratic recovery from this extremely invasive
(and in those days, relatively untested) surgery, she developed Adrenal
Insufficiency. She was treated with another new medical technology: huge doses of
pharmaceutical steroids.
Although the consequences of massive dosing were
not yet known, the risk was thought acceptable because the patient was not
expected to live long without natural adrenal function.
The native however survived four additional
decades. A former medical professional herself, she appreciates that her
extended suffering is the result of iatrogenic disease.
Timing
of first health crisis (Toxic Shock and Intestine-removing Surgeries):
-
Ketu/Guru period
- Guru = L-6, the disease agent. Behari says of Ketu/3: "Be careful of being ill-treated by others."
-
house-8 rules surgeries, which fall in randhra
bhava's portfolio of hidden, transformative events. L-6 occupies
house-8.
-
Ketu/Shani = the native was barely
clinging to life. Shani's L-7/L-8 powers emphasized oncoming
death. She was told to prepare herself for a short life.
-
Ketu/Budha, where L-3/L-12 Budha
is a dusthana lord for Karka lagna, was a period of long hospitalizations
(L-12) and negative thinking/depression (L-3).
Note Ketu is yuti L-5/L-10 Kuja, a yogakaraka
for Karka lagna.
Although Mangala is not favored in Kanya rashi (where He
creates hyper criticism, perfectionism, and blaming) the fact that Kuja is
yogakaraka certainly improves Ketu's prospects.
At onset of her 20-year Shukra mahadasha, this
twenty-something woman shocked everyone with her sudden, vital enthusiasm for life despite her
post-surgical appliances & daily steroid dose.
-
Shukra = lord of house-4 (education, home)
& house-11 (goals, objectives, gain of wealth, networks of
friends).
In Shukra/Shukra, she started a university
nursing program, and completed it. She obtained a prestigious position at
the university hospital of her training.
L-4/L-11 Shukra mahadasha saw continuing professional education
(L-4) . She gained respect as an educator (L-4) in her field: neonatal
emergency medicine; note lagnesha-nurturing-mother Moon with emergency-Rahu.
The native set travel goals (L-11) of visiting one new country per year.
Most years, she met her goals. The per diem system in hospital nursing allowed
her to earn abundant money to bankroll her
travels. She developed a wide circle of friends (L-11). She bought a home
(L-4) which appreciated in value very quickly (L-11, profit).
However, the underlying weakness of her
medical condition began to emerge toward the end of Shukra mahadasha.
-
Shukra/L-6 Guru gave increasing illness,
with several emergency collapses.
-
Shukra/ L-7/L-8 Shani created a
near-death crisis (while meeting a remote foreign travel goal, foreign
travel being a topic of house-7). L-7 Shani can be a death agent, and as L-8
He provides the conditions. However L-2 Surya is generally a more potent makara
for Karka lagna, and Shani occupies the 5/9 auspicious angle from his
mahadasha lord Shukra - so death did not occur.
-
Shukra/Budha provided more
hospitalization - her first in 18 years since Ketu/Budha. Native then
embarked on another ambitious foreign journey (L-12 gives residence in
foreign lands.) L-12 Budha also causes hospitalizations. Budha in
2nd-from-Venus also has some maraka influence - but not enough for complete
death. The native was hospitalized again after completely overexerting
herself on an athletic foreign adventure. She never recovered her
strength, and was never able to work as a hospital nurse again.
-
Shukra/Ketu brought frustrations
of the renewed disease conditions, caused by overusing what remarkable
energy she had acquired from Shukra. Serious illness, weakness,
anxiety, angry frustration, and denial (Ketu) ensued.
Surya mahadasha manifested a total-body breakdown, and miserable steroid
toxicity. The native was almost totally handicapped, & lived in a state of ongoing pain & fear of
death.
During Surya mahadasha she moved from one health crisis to the next: severe phlebitis;
osteoporosis resulting in fractured
neck, spine, wrists, & ankles; migraine
headaches & fearsome depressions;
and other painful & dangerous social, emotional, and physical effects of
the steroid therapy. The damage was massive and pervasive
Yet she continued to offer her limited energies in volunteer work within her
community - Surya occupies house-11 of community networking. She
maintained friendships, expanding her contacts through charitable work, and
earned minimally, while helping those less fortunate than herself.
-
Surya as L-2 is a major maraka. It is
rather interesting that Surya did NOT cause physical death during this awful
period, especially considering that L-7 Shani occupies house-2!
-
There is no planet in 6th-from-Surya
(the worst) and all graha except Shukra are favorably placed vis-à-vis
Ravi.
Early in 1997, onset of Chandra mahadasha, the native announced that,
against the advice of her physicians, she planned to undertake a radical
alternative cure to release her from pharmaceutical steroid dependence.
The drugs had made her extremely ill, but she felt enough hope to try once
last attempt to get "clean". If the attempt failed, she knew
that her body was so damaged she would die.
-
In Chandra/Rahu, the cure
worked: she was released from chemical dependence &, under the expert
guidance of an alternative healer, she regained natural adrenal
sufficiency after nearly a year of intensive healing.
-
Chandra/Guru, where Guru is
normally the L-6 disease agent, cause some regression in terms of
infections & her physicians insisting that she return to the steroids
(L-6 brings enemies & unbalanced advice). Guru is also lord of mahadasha
pati Chandra, and as such He is less harmful during Chandra's major period
because He will give more His L-9 effects.
Further developments in this case are
unknown. However, a very strong maraka period, Chandra/Surya, occurs
at the end of Chandra mahadasha.
The final bhukti of any major
period gives closure, and if that bhukti lord is also a maraka, so much
stronger the implications.
Timing: Surya/Chandra period
would coordinate with gochara L-7 Shani crossing radix lagna.
Additional observations:
Essential causes of disease are located in the individual's ego structure, but they
are often hidden from the native's own consciousness.
If there is no consciousness of imbalances at more subtle
particulate levels - imbalances on the psycho-emotional astral plane, or on the
mental-conceptual causal plane -- then the physical body becomes the
default problem-solving location.
The physical body inherits the task of
resolving the imbalances in the only way it can: by manifesting disease.
Applying the method of radix-house-ruler's-
navamsha-lord-in-radix, it is possible to gain a spiritually healing
perspective on the disease factors present in the native's psychological
make-up.
These disease factors are the psycho-emotional or
conceptual seeds of physical illness. Adjustments to these
emotionally reactive or negative-belief factors are within the
native's control.
Although the fleshly level of the disease process may be
well advanced, improvements can be made.
Sometimes the improvements are
dramatic, when the physical body is relieved of constant psycho-emotional
pressures.
Often therapeutic counseling, massage, psychic readings,
prayer, meditation, and direct behavioral changes made under therapeutic
supervision have a significant effect on physical disease.
Here
again is the chart, for your convenience:
This woman has chronic health problems since childhood
which had by her 60's nearly paralyzed her.
The health situation has worsened gradually with
age.
She has lived in poverty since the illnesses overtook
her life; and she also aged prematurely. Whilst her multiple illnesses are
diverse, the single most miserable effect is osteoporosis.
She is lonely & needy, yet critical of others &
often ill-humored, with few reliable friends. The pain & weakness in
her body defines her life. Why? According to this amsha-radix
method, what is the root of the disease and what can she do about it?
First of all, does this sound like a Saturn
problem? Age, suffering, paralysis, poverty, isolation, brittleness of
the bones (osteoporosis)?
Yes.
But radix L-6 is Guru. Why are we seeing
symptoms of Shani?
It is absolutely true that L-6, three-from-swakshetra,
in house-8 is an inauspicious situation. On the material plane, this
yoga tends to impoverish (6) the native through the healing process (8). This
native has spent all of her funds on ineffective cures. Furthermore
L-6-in-house-8 is a marker of iatrogenic disease - physician-caused
illnesses that spawn from the ill-effects of improper treatments. This is part
of her reality.
But we are looking for a deeper insight into how people create
their own reality from their own skandhas, their own karmic
"heaps" of many-lifetimes-accumulated subconscious patterns.
-
radix L-6 is the disease agent
-
L-6 Guru occupies Kumbha navamsha
-
look therefore to Kumbha-lord Shani in the
radix, to see where this native's compulsive (nearly always
unconscious) behaviors form the seeds of the situation
Clearly this woman is suffering very deeply in this
life, and there is nothing too funny about her situation. Poverty,
disease, & loneliness are the very definition of misery. There is no
motive in our method to "blame the victim" of this or any other
misfortune. We are not here to criticize, but rather to heal!
Presuming our compassionate motivation, it is possible
to see how she participates in creating & maintaining these awful
realities, through her own repeating patterns as exhibited in Shani.
At the spiritually responsible level of perception, it is possible to
observe -- in a neutral, guilt-free way -- that there are actually No
Victims. Each person creates their own reality from their accumulated
past-life expectations. However, when those expectations are deeply
negative, as in this nativity, it is easy - perhaps inescapably easy - to
get stuck in the victim space.
Typically such a native is not interested in
self-responsibility; rather, they are so heavily invested in the karmic
habit of blaming others or "fate" for their dilemma that they must
continue on their negative path.
In consultation, the practicing Jyotishi is
tasked to find some way to suggest that a neutral perspective can be
achieved. After the native has acquired this healthier, non-judgmental
responsibility-without-guilt
viewpoint, they can actually begin taking positive steps to eradicate the
karma.
All karma no matter how severe can be consciously
improved. The lives of the great
saints are testimony to this truth.
Shani is highly inauspicious in radix. Occupying
the sign of His great enemy Surya, Shani's
potential to achieve the highest levels of balance and social justice is
greatly handicapped in the hostile environment of Simha rashi.
The native feels victimized since birth. Life is full of injustice &
her personal integrity (Simha) is oppressed (Shani).
The native's birth family (2) is oppressed (Shani) by
(their attachment to) the frustrations arising from wasted efforts.
Maraka L-7 Shani in a death house (2) casting drishti upon its lord (Surya,
father) caused the father, a high-ranking military officer, to be killed the
day before he was due to return home to his family - during the native's
childhood Shani bhukti.
The native's formative years were spent in a family
environment of repressed anger at the injustice of their father's death in a
morally-wrong, much-hated war. Surya, the individual ego, being lord
of this devastated house, the native's personality uses this resentment
& frustration at unethical situations as the warp-and-weft of the ego
structure. Of all her family members she is the most deeply &
permanently attached to the wounding of injustice.
Behari says of Shani/Simha/2:
You face financial hardship. Your mind becomes irritable and your relations part company with you. You may suffer from speech problems or poor eyesight. Saturn can inflict serious mortal blows.
Repressed anger, an key family tradition (2) is the
source of this native's health problems. If she can release this boding,
deeply internalized component of her socialized ego, and separate from the
compulsive behaviors of the rest of her family, she has a chance to be
healthier. "The mind becomes irritable." Irritability is her
distinguishing feature. This is the key.
For this nativity, Budha, Kuja, & Guru all occupy
navamshas of Shani. This means that the character of radix Shani is exceptionally
influential in her life - creating the material reality of six radix houses,
entirely half of her chart. The fruits of her "dharma" as
revealed in navamsha show that Shani's angry, resentful, negative attitude is
exactly what she needs to improve in order to restructure the reality of her
radix houses 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, and 12. House-6 is health.
Prognosis:
Mahadasha of Chandra augurs a continuation of health issues.
Chandra receives drishti of troublemakers Rahu/Ketu & Kuja in both D-1 (which
shows material life) as well as D-30 (which shows misfortunes.)
However Chandra as lagnesha brings self-confidence and
self-acceptance. Chandra in dharma bhava likes to role-model to others,
guru-style. She will teach others by example.
Mahadasha of Mangala is a more dicey proposition for the
physical body, because Kuja is a serious physical aggressor in these charts.
However Kuja is also empowering as a yoga-karaka, bringer of strength and
balance through ruling two auspiciously strong houses (5 & 10) in a
Cancer-rising chart.
