I. Mesha.

One of the synonyms of this word is Aja

Now, Aja literally means that which has no birth, and is applied to the Eternal Brahma in certain portions of the Upanishads.

So, the first sign is intended to represent Parabrahma, the self-existent, eternal, self-sufficient cause of all.

Parashara says:

The natives of this lagna are of middle stature.  They possess a lean & muscular body.  They are neither stout nor thick. Their complexion is rough & they have a fairly long neck & face.  They have bushy eyebrows & have a sharp sight. They are active & ambitious, bold & impulsive. Sometimes on account of a bad influence on Mars, the lord of this lagna, they become rash & aggressive.

With good influences on the lagna they become confident, courageous, enterprising with high aims & also liberal. They have determination & force of character.  They have executive ability but they make changes often.  They are very optimistic.  They are good lovers & have a charm which attracts the opposite sex.  With bad influences on the lagna they become passionate & jealous & go astray.

Sthana (Domain)

Rashi & Pati

Phul (fruits)

House 1 - Appearances

Pres. Gerald R. Ford

Mesha [Aries]

Kuja -Mars: Kinetic Energy

Native is identified with hunting, sport, & all types of competitions. Pitta cast to the complexion. Inhabits his physical body with enthusiasm, if Kuja is strong.

Athlete, winner. Likes high-energy environments, games & contests, vigorous sport, weapons, outdoor life. Tends to be selfish or self-directed, to place his own interests in the center of family & community life on the premise that if s/he does well, everyone will do well. (May be very surprised when others don't see it that way.)

House 2 - Values

Vrishabha [Taurus]

Shukra -Venus: How We Love

Natural values promote pleasure & beauty. Lover of nature. Enjoys having money & if Shukra is strong, acquires lots of it. A hoarder. Eats for pleasure. Self-indulgence through the mouth. Loves history & tradition, visual beauty, sensual indulgence.

House 3 - Mental Process

Mithuna [Gemini]

Budha -Mercury: Mental Tasking

Mental health tends to be good. Reduced mental flexibility if Shani drishti to domain-3, but generally stable & busy mentally. A quick study. Depending on Budha's condition, thinking process itself may be sharp or foggy. Processes input quickly & self-validates their own perceptions.

Likes to talk, often prefer to chat or banter when emotionally difficult or confusing subjects are discussed.  Broad tolerance for meetings & continuous social engagements, good skills for staying on the surface of issues. Skillful talker, regardless of content. Friendly handshake.  Enjoys the company of their siblings, neighbors, & co-workers. Good skills for small-group process: facilitation, conversation, etc.

House 4 - Home, family, security, vehicles

Karka [Cancer]

Chandra -Moon: the Whole Mind

Profound dedication to home & family.  Intensely committed parenting style..  Like to share their extended family feeling of security & trust, inviting extended family into their homes.  Characteristics of Chandra will determine the quality of the home. Need a great deal of security, which they derive from their family.

House 5

Children & Intelligence

Simha [Leo]

Surya  -Sun: the Soul-Self

Rational self & ethical intelligence = focused on  children, politics, and creative adventure.  Wonderful scouting guide, camp counselor, & sports coach. Loves teaching. Dynamic self-expression finds a wellspring of energy for self-promotion in literature and performance arts.

Children are independent, selfish & self-directed, as is the native.

House 6

Imbalance: Enemies, Debt/Finance, Illness, Livestock/Pets, Servants

Kanya [Virgo]

Budha -Mercury: Mental Tasking

Whichever sthana is ruled by Kanya shows where the native's inventory of information is concentrated. For Mesha lagna, the strongest concentration of data & knowledge lies in the health field. Ability to deploy this information profitably depends of condition of Budha.

Although this native possesses a good deal of health information & may in fact choose a career in medicine (because Budha is a career indicator) the rationalizing aspect of Budha tends to defeat good personal health practices. L2 Shukra tends toward pleasure-sensual eating, and Budha as L6 substitutes mental activities for physical exercise. Native tends toward a sedentary, pleasure-oriented lifestyle except during Mars periods, when s/he may be vigorously active. May be more clever than their advising physicians, and try to out-reason the doctors.

Talks to criminals, converses with physicians, chats with pets. Does well in military, policing, jails, or conflict-management settings. Likes medical emergencies, where his organizational skills & huge inventory of information are useful & admired. Prefers to talk through conflicts rather than fight. Rarely in trouble with police despite his affinity for weapons. If Kuja is strong, may be greatly concerned with & has a great deal of organized information about the topic of weapons safety.

House 7

Balance:

Marriage, Partnership, Agreements

Thula [Libra]

Shukra -Venus: How We Love

Marriage is dominated by a deep sensual love, and a lasting desire for social harmony. Mesha natives are good lovers who take their relationships seriously, seeing them as works of art to be constantly refined. If Skukra is fortunate, the spouse is quite lovely and marriage is a reliable pleasuring experience.

Contracts, agreements, legal discussions, all types of advising are approached with a desire for harmonious outcome.  Shukra being L2/L7, divorce or death of the spouse is not always the end of love; the second marriage may be quite as nice as the first. Because Shukra rules both 1st marriage & 2nd marriage domains: more than any other lagna, Mesha is inclined toward the remarkable pattern of divorcing, then remarrying, the original spouse.

Spouse tends to be attractive (according to Shukra) & amiable, although the typical Shukra issues of alcohol/sugars are also attending their beauty. Career of spouse = 10th-from-7th = Karka. Female spouse tends toward traditional homemaking or work with ocean life; male spouse tends toward career with ocean products, shipping, or parenting at home.

House 8

Hidden Matters:

Joint Assets, Pooled monies, Healing

Vrischika [Scorpio]

Kuja -Mars: Kinetic Energy

Competitive or adversarial relationship with in-laws. Native is a shamanistic healer of some stripe, who may find a medical or psychiatric or spiritual expression for his therapeutic instincts. Special ability to intervene in catastrophic or disaster situations of sudden and unpredicted change, depending on the character of Mars. If lagnesha Kuja is strong, native may be a surgeon, detective, archeologist or psychiatrist.

Spouse may not contribute much equity into the joint assets of marriage, because the native is ambitious and wants to be recognized as being the main provider - whether native is male or female, Mesha lagna tends to be the primary provider in their family. If there is a dispute over dividing the joints assets of marriage, ceteris paribus, the native will win.

House 9

High Religion:

Priesthood, Guru, Father, Social Morality

Dhanus [Sagittarius]

Guru -Jupiter: Wisdom Expansion

Unless Surya or Guru occupy domain-9 (karako bhavo nashto), the native's religious and spiritual life is blessed.  Native has a natural, expansive view of religion which accommodates all faiths. A natural priest and spiritual leader; may officiate at ritual passages whether he is officially sanctioned or not. Popularly recognized as a priest.

House 10

Public Status:

Career, Profession, Public Dignity

Makara [Capricorn]

Shani -Saturn: Karmic Cleanup

Depends on condition of Shani. In general, career in conservative hierarchical organizations. Climbs the ladder. Many setbacks. May have to work harder than average to achieve dignity, but once he has achieved it, s/he will not abandon their position. Very attentive to rules & protocols. Starts out low in the pecking order; during Shani periods, steps up the ladder.

House 11

Marketplace:

Networks, Friendships,  Associations, Income, Gains

Kumbha [Aquarius]

Shani -Saturn: Karmic Cleanup

If Shani is favorable, this native earns adequately from conservative professional work. Eccentric style of operating in the marketplace.  May change jobs on an irregular cycle or have several streams of income, some high some low.

Associates with people from extremely diverse backgrounds. Goals include community building & visionary future communal lifestyle. However this native is usually constrained in their ability to reach all of their goals; Shani slows their achievements, & limits the income.

House 12

Dissolution:

Meditation, Sanctuary, Confinement, Privacy,  Loss of Identity

Meena [Pisces]

Guru- Jupiter: Wisdom Expansion

The meditation & inner sanctuary house is hugely benefited by all-good L-9/L-12 Guru.  Mesha lagna typically has an expansive inner life with vivid, spiritual dreams. High permission to cross and re-cross the boundary between the world of the dead and the world of the living; they can be wonderful death facilitators and astral guides.

Body-calming meditation and spa-type deep relaxation are accessible especially in a lakeside or still-water environment. Mesha lagna enjoys foreign travel if Guru is empowered; Guru periods may signal foreign residence or extended periods of religious study in a foreign land. This native is at home in a variety of spiritual traditions, and he may take to extended wandering during the mahadasha of Guru.

Summary of Graha Lordships for Mesha Lagna with Gem suggestions

Surya

L-5

Surya karaka for rational self, soul, and ethical awareness, controls bhagya domain-5.

Ruby, gem for Surya, is beneficial for increasing creativity, children, & success in speculative ventures.

Chandra

L-4

The highly fluctuating and impressionable Chandra controls the auspicious kendra domain of education and 'roots', including landed properties and 'cultural capital' from education and the manners learned in maternal upbringing.

Natural Pearl, the gem for Chandra, is beneficial for all ventures involving basic social education or acquisition/management of landed properties.

Kuja

L-1, L-8

Vital & competitive lagnesha Kuja also controls domain-8. Kuja is the most influential graha for Aja lagna, following the importance of the Moon.

Natural Coral or Kuja's lower-potency stones should probably not be worn however due to its power to increase domain-8 effects. (There are certain tantrik exceptions where coral would be good, but generally Chaaga lagna should avoid it..)

Kuja's character in rashi & bhava will determine the field of action for the perpetual challenge, competition and combat which propel this highly vital native into life and work.

This native may be a competitive businessman, a metalworker, a skilled & active sports enthusiast, a hunter, an athlete or dancer, a barber or surgeon or dentists, an emergency worker in police, fire, or ambulance service. One may express the tremendous vitality of Mesha lagna in any good strong physical way (unless Kuja is oppressed by Shani). Weapons and steel implements are nearly always a part of their life.

  1. Mangala's position will make or break the success of Mesha lagna folks.  Mangala will show the style and direction in which the life force wishes to travel.

  2. Should Kuja be exalted, in own sign, in parivartana with his lord, or in kendra, the Mesha native will enjoy worldly success.  The stronger Kuja's traits the strong the native's performance in his specialty.

  3. Guru, Shukra, and other benefics will contribute their own measure of talent and capability to the life.  However, the lagnesha Kuja has amplified powers.

  4. Kuja is not a reflective force but rather active and productive.  He never loses his malefic quality - his drive to create competition, aggression, war - but he may give excellent worldly results when he is well placed.

  5. For example, if Kuja occupies Makara in sahaja bhava, he marks excellence in business and a propensity to create self-made wealth.  He will be exalted in the house of sales, marketing, administration, meetings, teamwork, colleagues/siblings, and mental tasking.  So of course he flourishes in virtually any type of business!  Add a parivartan with Shani rising in Scorpio (every 29 years a batch of these people are born!) and see the prognosis for self-made wealth through determined hard work, dominating aggressiveness, and sharp business judgment.

  6. By contrast, if Kuja occupies Kumbha, the sign of his enemy, in bandhu bhava, the individual may find that their life force tends to implode.  There is little useful expression in the outside world due to the combined oppression of Kuja plunged into the emotional realm of the 4th house and doubly chained to the whims of his adversarial lord Shani.  The power of kendra is somewhat helpful, providing the stamina to keep this person alive and working until Shani becomes more friendly - usually in middle age.  Shani is friendly to age, experience, wisdom, conservative principles, delayed judgments, etc.  So this situation of Mangala will be extremely difficult until Kuja reaches his maturity at age 28; thereafter a comparatively less oppressed period until the 2nd Saturn return in the mid-forties; and thereafter until death (depending on dasha effects) this Mars becomes easier to manage as the body and emotions are less turbulent in age.

Budha

L-3, L-6

Conversational, mentalized, & sexually communicative Budha is a troublemaker.

Never apply Emerald for remedial purposes. It is best to also avoid Emerald and even Budha's lower-potency stones (such as peridot) for costume purposes. However, the lower-vibration stones probably have negligible effect unless the person is already ill or super sensitive.

Psychically gifted persons with Mesha lagna might notice that a bright green aura can indicate mental or physical imbalance for them, and they may choose - from experience and not from superstition - to use colors other than green, where feasible.

Guru

L-9, L-12

Wise and expansive Guru controls all-good domain-9 but also the house of losses, domain-12. Therefore it is not recommended for any except the most religious persons having Mesha lagna, to wear a yellow sapphire.

Natives who are highly advanced in spiritual practice and who accept loss of identity (domain-12) as a reasonable price to pay for religious fellowship & guru (domain-9) will benefit from wearing the 'Pukhraj'.

Others should choose Ruby or Natural Pearl or both in a single setting.

Shukra

L-2, L-7

Sweet  and sensual Shukra controls both the 1st & 2nd marriages. Shukra is also a major maraka. Due to maraka implications, avoid using inclusion-free Vedic Diamonds in remedial applications. Conventional heat-treated diamonds will probably have a negligible effect.

Shani

L-10, L-11

Pragmatic and conventional Shani controls career and income. Blue sapphire and Shani's less stones may be used judiciously - during Shani's periods, and when the native is socially focused on career & income.

Rahu

gives the effect of Rahu's lord

Ketu

Functional benefic (yogakaraka):

The functional benefic planet rules both a trine (houses 1,5,9) and a kendra (angle house 1,4,7,10).

  • Sun/Moon, when interpreted as a single planet, rule houses 4 & 5

  • (compare to the other Mars-ruled lagna Scorpio, where Sun/Moon are yogakaraka lords of houses 9/10)

  • Mars-ruled natives benefit from exceptionally strong and emotionally-coordinated willpower, presuming that Sun/Moon occupy good houses.

  • The self-concept is one of inherent capability. Aries rising are strong parents, born believing they should rule benevolently over home and children.

  • predisposed to assume parenting, teaching, and coaching authority

  • The details of how they parent & teach, depend largely on the house and sign position of Surya and Chandra, drishties to the luminaries, and other adjustments to the general truth that when Ravi is 5th lord the person is born to create (and procreate), and when Chandra is 4th lord the emotional, nurturing  intuition is highly developed.

  • For example Mesha rising with Surya/Chandra together in Ari bhava [Kanya rashi] will develop his home and children through trade and financial services, probably in the medical field.  This combination gives the Black Moon of course, so often the money rules him rather than him ruling the money!

  • By contrast Mesha rising with Surya powerful in karmaa-dharma bhava [Makara rashi] while Soma occupies putra bhava [Simha rashi] is much more likely to express her parenting, caretaking destiny in the business, educational and entertainment fields.  The yoga provides a 6/8 Sun-Moon angle, which is less favorable for smooth expression of leadership intelligence.  Although she will be respected for her competence due to the powerful position of Surya, she may contradict herself due to the 6/8 and thus lose the people's trust.  Inner and outer self are not fully coordinated/are imbalanced in the 6/8 Sun-Moon yoga.

  • Another arrangement might be Ravi in labha bhava [kanya rashi] while Chandra occupies putra [Meena rashi].  Chandra as dharma lord brings many blessings to putra bhava and when Ravi occupies the 7th from Chandra, the White Moon (full moon) obtains, giving smooth coordination of inner and outer self-concepts in the world.  Professional expression is sensible to the public.  Material gains [Surya/11] and honor are granted for work of  creativity [Soma/5] and romance [7/7 yoga Sun-Moon].

Power of Parivartana for Mesha lagna:

There are four possible pari-vartana yogas for Kuja lagnesha:

  1. Mangala in Makara with Shani in Vrischikha - this one is the best for material gain because lord Shani is the gainful 11th from his tenant Kuja, while Lord Kuja is self-made-wealth 3rd from his tenant Shani.

  2. Mangala in Kumbha with Shani in Vrischikha - this one is the best for public status and professional recognition because lord Shani is the respectful 10th from his tenant Kuja, while Lord Kuja is the social-emotional security 4th from his tenant Shani.

  3. Mangala in Makara with Shani in Mesha - this one is also good for public status and professional recognition because the same 4/10 yoga obtains.  Fallen Shani will occupy the dusthana 6th house karmically obliging the person to handle the suffering of the masses - poverty, disease, hatred - yet Shani emerges through the parivartan into the very powerful neechha bhanga condition, causing the person to rise very high in organizations which serve the suffering.  There may be much combat in this life but the person has undeniable business skills from the exalted Mars which will give increasingly obvious results after age 28.  Superior performance in military settings.

  4. Mangala in Kumbha with Shani in Mesha -- this one is also favorable for material gain because lord Shani is self-made-wealth 3rd from his tenant Kuja, while Lord Kuja occupies the gainful 11th from his tenant Shani.  Wealth may be gained via unscrupulous means involving exploitation, and there may be profound emotional turmoil ( with an abstract, philosophical calm in the eye of the hurricane).  This may be an evil person or one who suffers near-crippling difficulty in life, but they can gains tremendous worldly, political power through determined networking.
