VI. Kanya

Means a virgin and represents Sakti or Mahamaya.

The sign in question is the sixth Rasi or division, and indicates that there are six primary forces in Nature.

These forces have different sets of names in Sanskrit philosophy.

According to one system of nomenclature, they are called by the following names*:

(1) Parasakty; (2) Gnanasakti; (3) Itchasakti (will-power); (4) Kriytisakti; (5) Kundalinisakti; and (6) Matrikasakti.

The six forces are in their unity represented by the Astral Light.**

* Parasakti:--Literally the great or supreme force or power. It means and includes the powers of light and heat.

Gnanasakti:--Literally the power of intellect or the power of real wisdom or knowledge. It has two aspects.

Parashara says:

[They] are tall with a slender body.  Their eyebrows are covered with hair growth.  Their voice is very often thin & sometimes even shrill. They walk quickly & they seldom have a pot belly.  As they are very active they often appear younger than their actual age.  The persons with Kanya  lagna are fond of quick changes.

However, they are very capable of handling even unfavorable situations.  They are thorough, & methodical, practical & discriminative but they lack power.  They will have desire to save money. They have sound commercial instinct & they want to grow rich as quickly as possible.  Their married life is not unhappy.

Appearances, Physical Form

U.S. Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt

U.S. Pres. Harry Truman

U.S. Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower

U.S. Pres. John F. Kennedy

U.S. Pres. William J. Clinton

U.S. Pres. Lyndon Johnson (rect.)

Kanya [Virgo]

Appearance depends significantly on Budha's condition - sign, house, companion planets, drishti, etc..

However, Kanya-lagna folk will have a vata or slightly stone-colored cast to their complexion, a very slightly opaque bone-colored patina,  relative to their gene pool.  (Moon's sign & characteristics also influence appearance.)

  • Each lagna has certain predispositions from the portfolio of its natural house.

  • These predispositions are only themes, and must be confirmed by other factors to justify true predictions.

  • These subtle rashi-lagna traits are not determining per se, but they will reinforce other influences, such as corresponding strength in the natural house, strong lagnesha, Chandra etc.

For Kanya lagna, expect the subtle presence of domain-6 attributes. The native attracts pet animals, whom they love. A strong affinity for the working class, servants, the underclass.

A particular tendency to get out of balance physically gives a disease theme: due typically to over- mentalization caused by lagnesha Budha.

IMO, these natives are not always thin, per Parashara. In the modern era, physical imbalance often manifests as overweight due to heavy mental workload and poor diet. Kanya lagna often has a 'pot belly' and then some.

House 2

Values

Thula [Libra]

Values are predominantly material & aesthetic, favoring sensual experience & good design.  Their ethics reflect a need for balanced social relationships. Justice & equitable distribution of resources are strong values in their social morality, although it is generally more important for them to have a pleasing, wealthy, & comfortable personal environment than to pursue abstract philosophical virtues. They like money and are good savers. If Shukra is strong their birth families are materially prosperous & have good manners. Speak nicely (depending on Shukra of course) & generally have attractive mouth & teeth.

House 3

Mental Process

Vrischika [Scorpio]

Mental health depends entirely on Kuja, but the tendency is toward volatility and moodiness. Thinking process itself is sharply competitive, which benefits their business advance but is not ideal for collaborative process unless Kuja is auspicious.  Likes to talk, but tends to dominate the conversation.  Can be extremely perceptive, and extremely hurtful if mature judgment is lacking. ( Mars "matures" at 28; so the hurtful habit is often tempered or gone by age 30, as the native begins to notice its effect on others & desists.)   Can be impatient and/or controlling in meetings and continuous social engagements, but at the same time very productive in their ability to cut through politeness and tell the truth. Competes vigorously with siblings, brooks no resistance.

House 4

 -Home, family, security

Dhanus [Sagittarius]

Abundance in benefits from mother, home & family.  Depending on Guru's condition, enjoy large homes which may host many gatherings of like-minded philosophers.  International, ethnic decoration style.  Like to share their abundance with other family members.  If female, may have more fatherly, coach-type or guru-type qualities than emotionally motherly (but this is firmly determined by her Moon).  Quality and location of home is less important than size & capacity.  Tends to acquire a solid education in humanistic subjects.  If Guru is strong, makes a wonderful teacher.

House 5

Makara [Capricorn]

Children are demanding, creating a heavy duty schedule.  Kanya rising tends to believe that "if I want it done right, I must do it myself" - a result of L-6 Shani - so raising children is a major resource drain.  Depending on Shani's disposition, there may be no children.  More normally, children are delayed.

With good planets occupying house-5, children although demanding can also be deeply rewarding.

Creativity is also inhibited, but wisdom occurs later in life which can mean valuable late-life literary expression.  Enjoys tightly structured creativity which is linked to a materially realistic goal, such as architectural or medical drawing;

House 6

Kumbha [Aquarius]

Health depends on Shani's location by sign & house.  In general, benefits to health from Shani's influence include a fairly austere diet & close attention to the physical form.  Problems induced by Shani include sleep deprivation & overwork. The total health picture is more damaged by stress than by overindulgence or poor choices.  However the benefits of eating minimally are a significant advantage to long-term health.  Shani's assets are always saved for the long term.

Unfortunately, Shani's karmic magnet attracts enemies.  Kanya lagna speaks honestly, and sometimes aggressively in small groups, due to the sharp effects of house-3.  May be unpopular for their direct style, their intolerance for weakness, and their unconscious fears.

Their biggest stress is unbalanced workload at home and in public.  Native frequently perceives the spouse as less hardworking than self.  Burden of servitude falls upon the native, a central imbalance of marriage leading to long-term strife if Shani is inauspiciously placed.  If Shani is auspiciously placed the native may escape direct servitude but will bear the financial burden of paying for servants.

They get into trouble during periods of the 6th lord just like everyone else.  Enemies, debt, and disease will be bothersome during Shani periods - and this is rather inescapable, unless Shani occupies house 5 or 8 or 12. If mitigated in 5, 8, or 12 Shani's effects are moderate and manageable.  Like everything related to Shani, the Kanya's fortunes regarding creativity (house-5) and imbalances (house-6) improve with age.

House 7

Meena [Pisces]

Marriage is generally favorable due to Guru's tolerant & expansive qualities. (However if Guru occupies house-6 or house-8 then tolerance is eroded or destroyed)

Spouse will be a convivial person, generally well educated, and may strongly resemble psychologically the native's parents.

Contracts, agreements, legal discussions, all types of advising are easy for Kanya lagna.  Divorce is uncommon (unless Guru is damaged).  Guru delights in finding broad basis for agreement, common humanitarian goals, and solutions to large-scale disagreements.  They like to find consensus.

Spouse usually shares a wide view of the world, a certain mystical inclination, love of children, and optimism toward the future.  If Guru occupies inauspicious house-6 or house-8, spouse will still have tolerant & mystical attributes but the interpersonal affinity may be reduced.

House 8

Mesha [Aries]

Joint assets of marriage are favorable if Kuja is in good condition.  If Kuja occupies Not unusual for spouses to have separate accounts, from which each contributes toward joint projects.  Spouse contributes according to their personal desires, less guided by what is good for the partnership & more guided by their individual instincts.  However, if Kuja is healthy the prosperity may be strong.

Normally the Kanya-lagna native is too restlessly active to access deep healing such as psychotherapy, therapeutic massage, and other regenerative therapies. Like field warriors, they carry a defensive shield which prevents outsiders from penetrating into their private space.

Kuja being a natural maraka, periods of Kuja indicate death of first spouse.  If Kuja is inauspicious, Kuja periods can indicate divorce, but this is less likely due to the benefit of Guru bringing compassion into marriage.

House 9

Vrishabha [Taurus]

The inspiration & consolation of Religion is easily accessible to Kanya natives.  However as always if Shukra is compromised there may be less happiness in the dharma.

Shukra is also a bringer of children & grandchildren. No matter what Sign & house Shukra occupies, His privilege as the all-good 9th lord brings good fortune to the matters of the house where He lives.

Their faith is focused on achieving balance, in all things and in all human relationships.  Shukra's aesthetic tendencies can make religion ritualistic, all show of surface beauty and no substance. They may substitute entertaining priests & decorating the temple for a deeper religious sensibility. But if Shukra is auspicious, Kanya lagna's love of nature brings an authentic connection through all creatures great & small.

Moral philosophy is limited to making the world a more beautiful & more sensually pleasurable place.  They are less interested in communicating with or placating the Divine; more interested in enjoying divine blessings.

House 10

Mithuna [Gemini]

With Budha as both lagnesha & L-10, Kanya-lagna natives have plenty of communicative intelligence to apply toward career development.  They are able to express the mission & detailed objectives of a large organization with great articulateness; and furthermore the are (by and large) personally neutral to other people's goals, which means no hidden resistance.  Kanya lagna are hard-workers (Shani = L-6) who form generous, tolerant partnerships (Guru = L-7) and they network with emotional engagement (Chandra = L-11) so as a rule Kanya have very good careers.

Everything depends on Budha however.  Ideally Budha will be angular and receive good drishti.  But even a poorly placed Budha will contribute verbal acuity and a neutral attitude toward leadership positions.

Professional reputation flourishes in detail-oriented, writing-and-speaking fields.  They enjoy business administration when they have control of resources (Kuja = L-3).  They enjoy managing information & the people who handle the information.

Much depends of course on any graha occupying house-10 or house-7.

House 11

Karka [Cancer]

Soma rules Kanya-lagna's 11th house of friendships and marketplace associations.  Karka folk can form emotional attachments to friends and associates.  They join networks of those with similar feelings.

So much depends upon Chandra's ever shifting character.  Moodiness & cyclical behaviors dominate Chandra's character, so expect changeable actions in Kanya's income levels, patterns of friendship, and involvement in associations both personal & professional

Has many female friends as a rule.  May treat their mother as a friend more than a parent. Emotionally attached both to the immediately older sibling in particular and to all older siblings in general (unless Soma is damaged). Closest friends are also relatives, within the family.

House 12

Imagination, foreign lands,  private affairs

Simha [Leo]

The meditation & inner sanctuary house is somewhat disrupted by Surya's rational, moral qualities. A public planet like Surya shines too bright a light into the shadowy, private sanctuary house.

Instead of inner space/outer space, the native may develop several dramatis personae for different environments, seeking sanctuary in one public environment when they are exhausted or saturated in another.

For example, the native may develop a range of completely different names & personalities for use in different countries.  House-12 rules foreign countries and long foreign journeys.  Budha as lagnesha frequently grants Kanya-lagna the verbal facility to succeed at this strategy for creating privacy and intrigue.

Surya representing ego, Kanya folk are often strongly ego-identified with foreign lands, long journeys, and the separate psychic space they can create in a foreign country.

Surya ruling the house of bed pleasures and other private sensual enclosures is not favorable for the imagination, because Surya's influence is too rational.  Kanya-lagna's moksha house 4, 8, & 12 are all ruled by hot, active planets: Guru, Kuja, & Ravi.

They have limited inner peace, but are dynamically enthusiastic in rational, conceptual, philosophical inquiry.  They can think about peace but probably not deeply experience it because they are very busy being alive!

Body-calming meditation and spa-type deep relaxation are too quiet for most Kanya folk.

Rather, they prefer to travel to foreign lands, discuss moral philosophy, or make plans for leading others onto the path of peace.

"The environment where you are doing the meditation should be properly cleaned.

While cleaning,

  • you should cultivate the motivation that since you are engaged in the task of accumulating great stores of merit by inviting the hosts of buddhas and bodhisattvas to this environment, it is important to have a clean place.
  • You should see that all the external dirt and dust around you is basically a manifestation of the faults and stains within your own mind.
  • You should see that the most important aim is to purge these stains and faults from within your mind.

Therefore, as you cleanse the environment, think that you are also purifying your mind.

Develop the very strong thought that by cleaning this place you are inviting the host of Buddhas & Bodhisattvas who are the most supreme merit field, and that you will subsequently engage in a path that will enable you to purge your mind of the stains of delusions."
