VII. Tula.

When represented by numbers according to the method above alluded to, this word will be converted into 36.

This sign, therefore, is evidently intended to represent the 36 Tatwams.

(The number of Tatwams is different according to the views of different philosophers but by Sakteyas generally and by several of the ancient Rishis, such as Agastya, Dvrasa and Parasurama, &c., the number of Tatwams has been stated to be 36).

Jivatma differs from Paramatma, or to state the same thing in other words, "Baddha" differs from "Mukta" * in being encased as it were within these 36 Tatwams, while the other is free.

This sign prepares the way to earthly Adam to Nara.

As the emblem of Nara it is properly placed as the seventh sign.

(* As the Infinite differs from the Finite and the Unconditioned from the Conditioned.--Ed. Theos.)

Thula [Libra]

Shukra: How We Love

Depends on condition of Shukra.

Balanced physical features, tendency to more fair type of complexion within one's genetic group. (However strong influence from Kuja can darken the overall coloring.)

Thula lagna is famous for generating public celebrity, reputation & success. The native is attractive to both men & women, through Shukra's agency.

In addition to being naturally gifted with physical beauty (presuming Shukra is auspicious), the Thula native easily accepts professional "handling" to improve their presentation, through skillful use of paints & costume. Their appearance is normally impeccable.

This nativity will flourish when Shukra, Shani & Chandra are strong, and Kuja/Surya/Guru do not interfere. Guru as L-3/L-6 is a naturally inauspicious influence upon this native. Ideally Guru should be weak.

Thula lagna's signature capability is the power to create many layers of supportive agreements. Thula succeeds through combination of personal attractiveness (l-1 Shukra), respect for tradition (L-4 Shani), active crafting of agreements (L-7 Kuja) and emotional engagement in leadership roles (L-10 Kuja).

The list of global power brokers, religious leaders, and celebrities at left indicates how inordinately influential are Thula nativities in the world.

House 2 - Values

Vrischika [Scorpio]

Kuja: Kinetic Energy

Exploratory, archeological, shamanistic approach to knowledge, wealth, values, history of one's people. Appearance of face, hair etc. is slightly sharp.

The native is self-changing, internally deep & recycling, able to call forth the values & knowledge needed for the task at hand. Hair styles, cosmetic surgery to face, other appearance factors adapt to current energies.

Hoarded wealth levels depend on condition of Kuja. Values are reflective, militaristic, self-reflexive, and surprisingly spiritualized.

Appreciates the dark side of human nature and the instructional value of pain. Controls an appreciable amount of wealth increasing throughout the lifetime, punctuated with severe losses. Secretive about their wealth.

House 3 - Mental Process

Dhanau [Sagittarius]

Guru: Wisdom Expansion

Mental health tends to be good, characterized by optimistic & expansive viewpoint..  Depending entirely on Guru's condition, thinking process itself may be broad & comprehensive or tending toward unrealistic generalizations. Native has a wide view of their environment & trusts their own perceptions.

Excellent administrator of the delegating type. Enjoys conferences, meetings & repetitive social engagements. Friendly, positive &  non-confrontational. Enjoys building contacts and participating in teams. Great for politics & corporate success.

Supports favorable relationships with siblings if L-3 is good. Likes to coach, guide, train, & facilitate in the local (department, town, regional) setting. Excellent bureaucrat.

House 4 - Home, family, security

Makara [Capricorn]

Shani: Karmic Cleanup

Yogakaraka

Home is a show of public conformity, more a duty than a passion.  Depending on Shani's condition, tends toward emotional discipline & austerity in the home. Prefers a regular schedule. Can tolerate & may indeed prefer long absences from the home. Seeks to establish "law & order" culture. Prefers a home made of stone.

Conservative, conventional relationship to parents, based more on performance & less on love. Respect for custom & tradition. Gifted in land management, esp. of public properties. Requires & imposes orderly process in education; prefers practical, skill-based training in lieu of speculative thought.

If Budha is auspicious, favors business & financial accounting. If Shani is auspicious, makes a fine school teacher, home-builder, vehicle engineer, or town manager.

House 5

Kumbha [Aquarius]

Shani: Karmic Cleanup

Yogakaraka

Shani is yoga-karaka for Thula lagna. Results of Shani as lord of enemy Surya's bhava are surprisingly favorable as a rule. Controlled self-expression prevents going overboard, gives a steady upward climb in large organizational hierarchies.  Depending on the condition of Shani, the Self may express in a reserved or eccentric way. Native is considered interesting & philosophical, even visionary -- but still conservative & group-oriented. Their vision is socially egalitarian & inclusive.

Children can be problematic. Most common issue is physical & emotional distancing, due to the parent's public duties. The native may hold an idealized view of childhood & of one's own children, which prevents intimacy & acceptance.

If Shani is auspicious the native may be an exemplary educator, inspiring students to reach high standards. Children may also receive benefits of parents' social position. Children may compensate for lack of direct parenting by forming valuable relationships with the parents' friends. Community child-raising is favored.

House 6

Meena [Pisces]

Guru: Wisdom Expansion

Health can be compromised by abundance. Extensive public duties may lead to much grazing at social events, and excess unmonitored intake of food & drink may lead to portliness or indigestion. However in general if Guru is even reasonably well positioned, the native will enjoy good health & good company.

Depending on condition of Guru, will tend to have few real enemies.  May be unpopular at times, but Guru as lord of the evil 6th house assures that Thula-lagna's balanced, attractive, relationship-valuing assets are stronger than the potential animosity deficit which attends Ari bhava in any nativity.

They get into trouble during periods of L-6 just like everyone else, but their virtues tend to balance out their faults, and their friends will outnumber their enemies.  Generally when they err or irritate it will be perceived by their colleagues that they received bad advice. This person makes their fair share of mistakes. But they value relationships, & they are quick to repair the damage. Rarely suffers long-lasting ill will.

House 7

Mesha [Aries]

Kuja: Kinetic Energy

Marriage can be predominantly physical, with early attraction inspired by competitive success. Depends as always on the condition of Kuja.

Contracts, agreements, legal discussions, all types of advising are actively pursued & negotiated. Due to Shani's strength in Thula nativities, divorce is less common, but marital unhappiness may increase with time.  Despite a tolerance or even enjoyment of protracted negotiations in small-group & public settings, the Thula native may need to feel a quick 'win' in intimate relationships. Combative, aggressive streak in marriage is noted.

Career-wise, this argumentative or actively negotiating character can be beneficial in law, politics, & higher levels corporate management.

Spouse is generally athletic or professionally competitive. If Shani is auspicious, the spouse's career is complementary to the native. If Kuja is auspicious, the spouse is vital & embraces challenge. If Kuja is inauspicious, marriage is conflicted & the career will not develop to full potential, so important is yuvati bhava to the total career success.

House 8

Joint assets of marriage, secret matters, in-laws, therapeutics, healing, taboos, taxes, tantra

Vrishabha [Taurus]

Shukra: How We Love

Shukra is lord of Kuja's natural house. Spouse brings beauty, sensual pleasure and benefits to the marriage values. Dealings with in-laws are eased. Hidden, confidential information and relationships are relatively easy to initiate and sustain. This is a big part of why Thula lagna does well in public life - because there is much secret knowledge under the surface of public office!

House 9

Mithuna [Gemini]

Budha: Mental Tasking

Can be a bit of chameleon, adopting various belief systems for pragmatic purposes, then moving on to a new set of beliefs when expedient. Can mirror the dominant ideology out to the public very successfully, presuming Budha is competent.

House 10

Karka [Cancer]

Chandra: the Whole Mind

Domain-10 is about public trust. Moon is lord of Shani's natural house, giving this native a parental sense of responsibility in their leadership style. Thula lagna is famous for creating strong government, corporate, and military careers

Not only is Shani yogakaraka for Thula lagna but also Chandra the 'parent planet' is lord of the domain of public trust. Thula lagna's public presentation has a strongly emotional appeal. Style is authoritative, parental, & asserting seniority; also be patronizing, domineering, or even tyrannical - depending on highly impressionable Chandra, aspects to domain-10, & 10th-from-10th yuvati bhava. It is essential to track Soma's behavior in D-9 & D-10 to know where the career will go.

Chandra is reflective & absorptive. Public can project their needs for parenting, security, & authoritative guidance upon the Thula native in a leadership role. May evoke fanatic trust & support when they lead in emotionally troubled times.

House 11

Simha [Leo]

Surya: the Soul-Self

Rational self & ethical intelligence = focused on gainful relationships in the marketplace. Thula natives are ego identified with large associations & social networks. They naturally acquire strong support bases early in life.

Something about this native strikes people as "successful" or a "positive connection". Surya should be strong of course for the profitability of this lordship to give full fruit.

Generally a Thula native will be well-known & respected, as well as successful in building very large connection networks that support high leadership positions.

house 12

Kanya [Virgo]

Budha: Mental Tasking

Budha is lord of Guru's natural house, giving a mentalized &d conversational approach to the cosmic matters of imagination & meditation.

Easy travels. Native does not need much sleep. Little interest in subconscious life: all the attention is focused on surface consciousness. As a benefit, this native is not bogged down by much intrigue or covert dealings.

As a downside, there is little rest in this life. The native is perpetually busy without much access to deep sanctuary of reflection & prayer.

Summary of Graha Lordships for Thula Lagna

Surya

L-11

Surya karaka for rational self, soul, pride and ethical awareness, controls the networks of association. Unless Surya is damaged, the native is confidently gainful. If Surya is elegant, much rational good can be done in grand network of all human peoples. May be a principled and effective humanitarian. If Surya is damaged, will still effect a large network of people, but with unfavorable results (compare the Surya disposition of Mussolini Hitler, Jerry Falwell, vs. Pope John Paul II, Jimmy Carter, Ammachi.)

Chandra

L-10

The highly fluctuating and impressionable Chandra provides a direct emotional response to the public in service & leadership positions. Thula lagna is reputedly the most successful lagna for recognition in public life.

Kuja

L-2, L-7

Vital and competitive Kuja controls both the first & second marriages, as well as much activity in the worlds of wealth/values & business contracts.

Budha

L-9, L-12

Conversational and sexual Budha is generally beneficial, although the native is really too busy mentally to get very deep into spiritual practice. One may talk constantly of religion (9) without quite practicing it. Many interesting travels in foreign lands (12). Usually the travel occurs with a commercial or administrative agenda.

Guru

L-3, L-6

Wise & expansive Guru is a big troublemaker for Thula lagna. While Shani is a disciplined, practical, conservative, career-building asset, the normally auspicious Guru over-expands the world of routine meetings & correspondence, & inflates the realm of illness/conflicts (domain-6).

Shukra

L-1, L-8

Sweet  and sensual Shukra is a mixed blessing, very similar to the role of Kuja for Mesha lagna.

Shani

L-9, L-10

Pragmatic and conventional Shani becomes a major yogakaraka in two auspicious public houses. Confers prestige through conventional ascent of a hierarchy. Native prospers in priesthood/professorship and conventional group leadership. Success in government, commerce, military, and education. Excellent sense of balance & restraint;  cultivates relationships steadily.

Observations on Guru, Budha, and Shani house lordships, for Thula Lagna

Thula's legendary success is due less to what happens in the Thula nativity, and more to what doesn't happen. Because Shani, the dark force of ignorance and unnamed fears, does his work through the agency of the domains of education (4) and intelligence (5), Shani's results give discipline and structure, not oppression and slavery. Whatever domain Shani occupies, Shanaicharya will bring the security of domain-4 and the creativity of domain-5 along with Him.

The lord of domain-5 is especially beneficial. If the worst threat to human happiness is indeed doubt, the lord of domain-5 which brings confidence is the antidote to life's worst distress.

Yet, Thula lagna does suffer from a dual disability of both Guru and Budha.

When Guru controls Budha's houses, Guru attempts to over-expand the natural limitations of administrative (3) and service (6) work into grand and cosmic ritual undertakings (Guru).

This is awkward and uncomfortable for the native. One seems to one's co-workers to be "making mountains out of molehills". The native annoys one's workmates and suffers philosophical frustration in trying to apply Brihaspati's "grand understanding" to work that is properly just "done" in a quick & efficient Mercurial style.

Conversely, when Budha controls Guru's natural houses domain-9 and domain-12, matters of priestly religion (9) and the great human imagination (12) become reduced to common conversation (Budha).

The Thula native chats superficially about matters of faith & moral observance which many find too sacred to express with words, while blithely articulating the imaginative & divinatory processes of the deep subconscious which normally remain protected in the privacy of meditation halls or prayerful silence.

Luckily both domain-3 and domain-6 are upachaya houses. Matters of Sahaja bhava and Ari bhava will improve over time.
