IX. Dhanus (Sagittarius).
When represented in numbers the name is equivalent to 9, and the division in question is the 9th division counting from Mesha.
The sign, therefore, clearly indicates the 9 Brahmas -- the 9 Parajapatis who assisted the Demiurgus in constructing the material universe.

[They] have a well-proportioned & well-developed body. Generally tall with a large forehead, high and bushy eyebrows, long nose, bright eyes, graceful look, fair complexion & handsome figure. ... bold, courageous & forceful. They face adverse situations with fortitude. They have self-confidence. They have energy, enthusiasm, vigor & vitality.
In spite of all these qualities they are unable to take quick decision. They are God-fearing & love only truth. They stick to their principles. They go for higher education and are fond of traveling. They are intuitive & their intuition generally proves correct.

House 1 - Appearances
Dhanus [Sagittarius]
Appearance depends significantly on Guru's condition - sign, house, companion planets, drishti, etc..
However, Dhanus-lagna folk will have a kapha or milky-colored cast to their complexion, a very slightly soft moonlight patina, which may also have a golden quality (very subtle) relative to their gene pool. (Moon's sign & characteristics also influence appearance.)
Tendency toward a tall, broad physique with a pleasant, friendly demeanor. The body enjoys collegial group sports, for the social (not competitive) energy. Longish legs, can have hip, thigh, or sacral issues if Guru is compromised. Otherwise enjoys a reliable, healthy body.
House 2 - Values
Makara [Capricorn]
Values are conservative & traditional, speech is limited and cautious, depending on condition of Shani in D-1/D-9. Tend to carry forward the banner of family lineage by keeping to the old ways.
These are conventional folks who accumulate wealth slowly, often through careers in business & trade hierarchies. They don't mind starting in low positions, but they expect to be rewarded for loyalty and longevity.
Common in laboring families, skilled trades, & material rather than intellectual production. Needs to touch it to understand it. Shani has a pragmatic, sometimes oppressive, effect on aesthetics. These folks favor simple, practical, tangible, proven values. They have conventional tastes for their generation and enjoy conforming to the status quo.
House 3 - Mental Process
Kumbha [Aquarius]
Mental health tends to be stable but somber. Can be dogmatic if Budha is also Shani-ruled. Depending entirely on Shani's condition, thinking process itself may be extremely abstract, driven by principles and theories that the native has adopted without inquiry into alternative. But Kumbha/3 is also capable of producing a powerful intellectual if conditions are right. In either case, whether dogmatic or free-thinking, the mental process is very abstract.
Does not talk easily or fluently, unless there is an auspicious dristhi to Sahaja bhava. Prefers to keep their own counsel. Dislikes meetings & continuous social engagements; but will participate if their job status requires it. They are slow, careful, & terse writers who prefer established style & format. Success in writing government reports, laboratory documents, any rule-bound style.
Dhanus lagna are confusing folk. Being Guru-ruled, they are cheerful & optimistic in personality. Yet, their inner thoughts are often gloomy & dominated by rigid beliefs. Distant from siblings & co-workers; not a team person by nature. Prefer to work independently, as in skilled trades or self-owned business, where they have a free, uninterrupted space & can work according to the principles they believe in with minimal interference from others. If Shani is auspicious can grow self-wealthy through dedicated labor.
House 4 - Home, family, security
Meena [Pisces]
Generous and home-loving, appreciative of the mother & a nurturing, supportive parent. Depending on Guru's condition, tend to have welcoming homes where they enjoy the company of a large, extended family. Like to share their warmth and optimism with everyone in their family, forming beneficent relations with nieces, nephews, and family elders in addition to their own spouse & children.
Quality and location of home is not important, except that it be large and fairly peaceful. Likes to live near large bodies of water. Educational levels depend on Guru, but in general Dhanus natives are satisfied with
Children & Intelligence
Mesha [Aries]
Dynamic self-expression through competition. Depending entirely on the condition of Mars, the Self may express in an adolescent way (Mesha rules adolescence). The native likes kids & action; is a wonderful, natural sports coach, and expresses him/herself with vibrant, immediate, warrior-like enthusiasm. These folks like almost kind of sport, and can be successful sports gamblers if Mars is dignified and they trust their body instincts.
Some aggressive behavior from children, especially in adolescence - but this is well understood as natural development phase by the Dhanus native. Dhanus intelligently channels adolescent instability into sports/military competition with excellent results.
Dhanus lagna make great school teachers, especially in the high schools and especially when sports coaching is part of their duty, but really at any educational level where achieving short-term goals with high energy is the pattern for success. They imbue confidence in children through competitive individual achievement.
Imbalance: Enemies, Debt/Finance, Illness, Livestock/Pets, Servants
Vrishabha [Taurus]
Health can be compromised by sweet-tooth & sensually indulgent habits. Too much sugar tends toward weight gain & teeth problems.
Loves pets & usually has several in the house. If in agriculture will treat animals very nicely. Good with servants & employees, but if Shukra is unbalanced always a risk of mixing service with sensual indulgence. Keynote for the workplace romance.
Depending on condition of Shukra, has few real enemies. Generally well-liked and appreciated in their world.
They get into trouble during periods of the 6th lord just like everyone else, but their sweet attitude toward conflict solves most issues. Health is more serious problem during L-6 periods, including kidney disease & sometimes excess alcohol sugars. If alcoholic, will be a happy drunk with many friends... the problem is not social but physical, esp. because these large folk get sedentary in later life. Generally very nice people.
Balance:
Marriage, Partnership, Agreements
Mithuna [Gemini]
Marriage is chatty & communicative, a real partnership with healthy sexual energy. Mithuna is a very sexual sign. Basis of sexual attraction is conversation! Has good marriage karma, in general, although much depends as always on the condition of Budha.
Partnerships both marriage & business are busy & mentally stimulating. Capable of developing multiple peer-to-peer relationships and working successfully with both men and women. Career will have a strong element of conversation and short-term socializing, i.e. school teachers who socialize after work, tradesfolk who repair to the sports bar after finishing a construction project, or sports coaches who gather after games to compare views & celebrate.
Contracts, agreements, legal discussions, all types of advising are easy for Dhanus lagna. Divorce is uncommon (unless Budha is damaged) but multiple relationships are part of the package. This is not a contradiction when Mithuna rules house-7; there must be relationship variety in their lives, or they will die of boredom - but this reality casts no aspersion on their core marriage. Rarely in legal disputes, but when they are, their quick access to information & relationship skill is very helpful. They enjoy a creative argument.
Spouse is intelligent, sexual, verbal, may be multilingual and/or multicultural. Spouse or another of the partners may be significantly younger than the native. Spouse is good with business functions like sales, marketing, advertising, public relations etc. The marriage partners may also be business partners.
Hidden Matters:
Joint Assets, Pooled monies, Healing
Karka [Cancer]
Joint assets of marriage fluctuate. Spouse contributes more emotional assets than material assets, generally speaking - but the Moon is a very impressionable planet, so everything depends on Chandra's role in the radix. 8th house is 11th-from-10th, so spouse's emotional support is normally gainful for career.
The spouse is normally from a family of equal social standing, typically reflecting the conventional, time-honored family values of the native (see Shani-ruled house-2).
Dhanus-lagna can access touch-based emotional healing modalities therapeutic massage quite easily. Because their mind spins fast, especially in business dealings (Budha rules house-7 & house-10, the career houses), it is beneficial for career & life in general when Dhanus native shut down the mind for short periods, to immerse in healing waters and/or massage.
High Religion:
Priesthood, Guru, Father, Social Morality
Simha [Leo]
The inspiration & consolation of Religion is mainly experienced by Dhanus as rational moral philosophy. Their religious attention is mainly focused on the Golden Rule. However as always if Surya is compromised they may suffer from irrational beliefs, or hypocrisy.
Dhanus lagna is very philosophical by nature, & they put great stock in their ability to know what's right. However due to Shani's oppression of house-2 they frequently suffer conservative, dogmatic thinking which precludes authentic inquiry.
Their fathers tend to be strong personalities, possibly overbearing if Surya is excessive. Their ego instinct is to declare a position on all philosophical debates, often out of a personality need to be right rather than having formed an educated opinion. Which ever house Ravi rules is an ego domain for the native; for Dhanus-rising the realm of higher religion, social morality, and political philosophy is where the ego most robustly asserts itself.
Dhanus-lagna combination of enthusiasm, likeability, relationship skills, & self-righteousness makes a fine politician. Often these are educators & tradesfolk who later enter politics.
Public Status:
Career, Profession, Public Dignity
Kanya [Virgo]
With Budha as the 10th lord, Dhanus-lagna has plenty of mental energy to invest in career development. They are always thinking, analyzing, planning their next move.
Budha like Chandra is very impressionable, so the fate of Dhanus-rising's public career will vary dramatically with different positions of Budha. They are sensitive to important, career-defining variations in information - such as, where it came from, who delivered it, how it is connected to other sources. Clearly this is a great advantage in political careers, where Dhanus flourishes; but it is also valuable for educators & tradesfolk operating their own businesses.
Skillful information handling within a potentially very large system of interconnected sources (depending on Budha's strength) distinguishes the Dhanus-lagna career. Their information "antennae" are always working.
Marketplace:
Networks, Friendships, Associations, Income, Gains
Thula [Libra]
Venus rules Dhanus-lagna's 6th house of imbalance, along with their 11th house of friendships & marketplace associations. Dhanus folk are popular with both friends & enemies - because they entertain well. They truly enjoy socializing.
Shukra's natural instinct to develop balanced relationships brings Dhanus-lagna into the company of attractive, politically astute (Tula) & frequently wealthy and/or powerful people. Unless Shukra is fallen in Kanya (which brings serious trouble with women & scandal) Dhanus-lagna enjoys the company of many well-meaning and generally well-heeled denizens of his/her social world.
Dissolution:
Meditation, Sanctuary, Confinement, Privacy, Loss of Identity
Vrischika [Scorpio]
The meditation & inner sanctuary house is somewhat disrupted by Kuja's ceaseless quest for prey. Kuja is the hunter. Dhanus folk might never completely relax. Vyaya bhava is also the house of bed pleasures & other private sensual enclosures. Unless Kuja is weakened, Dhanus folk typically have an active & communicative sexual life.
Body-calming meditation & spa-type deep relaxation are accessible to Dhanus-lagna when they can turn off the mental machine. They enjoy vigorous, demanding types of meditation which require discipline & profound self-inquiry. They like to go hunting in their own subconscious.
Dhanus-lagna enjoys foreign travel. If Kuja is strong, may take up residence in a foreign land during Kuja's periods. Often they are engaged in battle or secret missions during these travels. Their bodies are fortresses. Dhanus-lagna can withstand tough spiritual discipline such as long winter retreats. However once they have reached their planned goal, they return quickly to the world.

Special Yoga for Dhanau Lagna
from B.V. Raman, "Three Hundred Important Combinations" (10th ed., Delhi, 1991).
31. Sreenatha Yoga
"Definition.—If the exalted lord of the 7th occupies the 10th and the lord of the I0th is with the 9th lord, Sreenatha Yoga is caused.
Results.—The native will have on his body the insignia of Vishnu, viz., the conch, the wheel, etc., be an agreeable speaker, godly, have a good wife and children and be loved by all.
Remarks.—Sreenatha Yoga may be said to be one of the important Raja Yogas inasmuch as a point of contact is established between the 7th, 9th & 10th houses.
It is held to give rise to power as well as wealth. The lord of the 7th should be invariably exalted in the 10th, the lord of which, in turn, must be with the 9th lord.
Obviously Sreenatha Yoga can occur only in respect of Sagittarius in which case Mercury, lord of the 7th, could remain exalted in the 10th.
- For no other Lagna can the 7th lord remain exalted in the 10th.
Since the original writers have laid emphasis on the fact that the 7th lord should be in the 10th* exalted, we have to conclude that the Yoga is a rare one and that it cannot arise with regard to any other sign of the zodiac than Sagittarius ..."
Psycho-emotional predisposition: Chandra rules house-8 for Dhanvana lagna.
Dhanau lagna has a psycho-emotional predisposition to expect that access to secret associations & confidential information will provide their security & protection. They are happiest (not always successful but happiest) in mysterious roles that express healing behaviors. E.g., psychotherapist, surgeon, psychic intuitive, money launderer, silent business partner, secret sexual partner, or as the holder of highly confidential information in secure positions such as executive secretary or military officer.
Chandra's radix & navamsha rashi's & any drishti to Chandra will show the native's specific style of pursuing security & emotional fulfillment. (E.g., Moon ruled by Shukra gives confidential roles in beauty & justice; ruled by Shani gives political & military roles handling government & corporate secrets; ruled by Surya a priestly role in communicating religious secrets, etc.)
Typically these natives expect to gain social and emotional stability by investing in hidden information & secret relationships. They often live two lives, one public and one private - and profit thereby. Despite their desire for secure protection, they are prone toward intrigue and may face a lifetime of sudden, unpredictable psycho-emotional upheavals including health crises.
Both the native and his/her mother may suffer mysterious, medically undiagnosable illnesses which a psychic would know to have emotional causes.
