Born Ioseb Jughashvili (Georgian: [Iosif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili]), Stalin became general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party in 1922.  Following the death of Vladimir Lenin, he prevailed over Leon Trotsky in a power struggle during the 1920s.
