Eleanor Roosevelt - Jyotisha D-1 Radix and D-9 Navamsha Charts

birth data from astrodatabank.com

Eleanor Roosevelt's birth time is quite probably generalized, but some features of the nativity stand out:

Prominent Features of the Nativity

Eleanor Roosevelt age 17 in 1901

Ketu in bhava-4

= Rahu in bhava-10

  • chidakaraka Ketu = Ambivalence toward the childhood home and the fixed homeland, owned properties, the parents, folk customs, rhythmic lifestyle habits of a people, basic schooling

  • chalakaraka Rahu = Ambition to obtain "by whatever means necessary" the privileges accorded to heads of state, organizational leaders, governance authorities, social regulators, officers of law and order

Ketu in bhava-4

Ketu-4 is rarely at home

  • Rahu gives best results in 3, 6, 10 and 11.

Vrischika Surya = L-9 from Dhanusha lagna and L-10 from Vrischika-Chandra.

  • focus on family lineages and wealth maintenance in 2nd-from-Chandra; yuti Budha, neechcha Chandra, and swakshetra Mangala; no incoming Parashari drishti

  • Surya in 12th-from-lagna creates a more reserved personality with a strong natural understanding of foreign lands and capable of long sojourn in isolation; however lagnesha Guru is quite prominent and she was certainly a world figure in her WWII diplomatic era.

  • Surya in Vrischika-12 gives deep composure, even under pressure of great and frightening (Vrischika) upheaval both political and personal.

  • As L-9 from Dhanusha lagna and L-10 from Vrischika Chandra, Ravi = an exceptionally auspicious house lord

Vrischika-Anuradha Chandra = neechcha L-8 from Dhanusha lagna and L-1 from Vrischika-Chandra.

  • Occupying bhava-12 the house of identity-dissolution and enclosures which ensure privacy.

  • No incoming Parashari drishti. L-8 Vrischika-Chandra = keeping of secrets, a job for which Mrs. Roosevelt was held in high renown. She kept diplomatic secrets, sexual secrets, and financial secrets with complete trustworthiness. Even her personal journals were very discreet.

  • neechcha VargottamshaChandra- private emotional troubles throughout life, private family disturbances, and constant destruction-then-rebirth of the ego which attends the L-8

  • Vrischika-Chandra benefitscapacity to retain confidential (8) information(Soma + Budha) and compassionate (Chandra), behind-the-scenes (12) work with the holders of secret power. She flew many clandestine missions around the world representing her increasingly paralyzed husband, carrying private messages (Chandra + Budha) and doing a man's dangerous job (Mangala-Vrischika) while posing as a gentle and sensitive (trustworthy) woman - which of course she was.

  • Eleanor Roosevelt was a very complex female person. Mangala + Chandra + Budha + Surya providing an extraordinary range of skill to handle an nearly continuous experience of personal and national Emergency(Vrischika) on an almost completely private (12) basis.

  • Women in general are problematic when Chandra occupies a dushthamsha and particularly when Chandra enters the neechcha state. The mother is lost (12) whether she persists in her flesh-body or not - psychically, she is gone.

    • Her lovers and her husband's lovers were all active, psychologically and sexually problematic (for Eleanor) and emotionally damaged women who contributed extremely important supportive (Chandra) and directive (Mangala) energy to the emergency efforts in the Great Depression and the second World War.

  • Chandra-Mangala yogafor wealth is present but reduced in Vyaya bhava.

Vrischika-Mangala = swakshetra L-5+L-12 from Dhanusha lagna and L-1+L-6 from Vrischika-Chandra.

  • L-5 politics + L-12 private relationships and "under the table" international diplomacy = lord of Chandra = lord of the nativity
  • Mangala in 12 also receives benefits of the reduced Chandra-Mangala yoga(wealth-engine)

  • Many things are lost or dissolved in this nativity due to the population of bhava-12. Lords of 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 occupy 12. L-8 in 12 gives Sarala Yoga which dissolves most of the troubles associated with widowhood (8) [in Eleanor's day, a divorciada would have suffered a similar degree of social obloquy as a widow] however Sarala yoga may also indicate the loss of inheritance and the dissolution of magical powers.

  • Swakshetra Mangala in Vyaya bhava generates a significant Kuja Dosha. Yet, due to Sarala Yoga, Mrs. Roosevelt was able to avoid the problems attendant upon splitting the large estate that she shared with FDR; thus she retained most of her funding and was able to continue in a public service partnership with her husband even while he was notoriously unfaithful (L-6 neechcha Shukra + Rahu).

  • She conducted a private sexual (Mangala, 12) life according to her own preference for accomplished male and female companions (Mangala with Chandra, Vrischika). Children are somewhat alienated (L-5 in 12) and marital harmony is utterly lost (not only L-7 in 12 but more importantly Shani/Mithuna/7). However the private life and clandestine relationships conducted in bedroom or distant-land sanctuary are psychologically, emotionally, and sexually complex and rich.

  • As L-5 from lagna and L-1 from Chandra, but weakened in 12, Mangala becomes a weak benefic.

Vrischika-Budha = L-7+L-10 from the Dhanusha lagna and L-8+L-11 from Vrischika-Chandra.

  • Budha in bhava-12 is an overall unfavorable house lord, ruling no trinal bhava from either Dhanusha lagna nor the Vrischika Chandra.

  • The internal mental chatter is deranged by extreme emotions responding to the trauma of childhood. Marriage is virtually destroyed by the combination of Vrischika Budha in 12 along with Shani-Mithuna in Yuvati bhava.

  • Nevertheless an agreement is available due to auspice of Chandra (Sarala yoga) and the native continues outer life while the inner torment rages.

Simha-Guru = lagnesha and L-4 from Dhanusha lagna; L-2 and L-5 from Vrischika-Chandra.

  • Guru, a natural benefic, will give favorable results for matters of

    • The flesh-body and its appearance ( the native 's image became very well-known, albeit not as a fashion model because neechcha Shukra _ Rahu for an unbalanced appearance occupies the high-visibility "peak" of bhava-10);

    • schooling and ownership of properties; accumulated monies via family lineage and knowledge gained through a good education (esp. languages);

    • As well as fortune through Children due to Guru as L-5 from Chandra, which significantly counteracts the misfortunate of L-5 from lagna Kuja in occupation of the dissolving twelfth house.

Incoming drishti of Shani gives discipline in public roles, and some moral or religious restriction on public behavior.

  • Guru is also lord of Dhanusha navamsha (Swamsha) and therefore a most auspicious graha giving a spiritualized and priestly worldview.

Guru is a naturally strong graha but it is still OK to strengthen due to a small liability as L-2 (non-trine, non-kendra). Lagnesha Guru/Simha/bhava-9 - priest, professor, and patroness of transformative wisdom through political action (Simha)

In practice, a super-strong Guru in 9 = karako bhavo nashto = too much expansion, too much permission.

  • For a female nativity, strong Guru/9 = much frustration and difficulties in the relationship to both husband and father .

  • Men who take the karmic roles of husband (Guru) and father (9) look generous, wise, and often charismatic on the outside, but within their personal relationship to the female native they behave in an arrogant style that refuses any behavioral limitation. A know-it-all, jovial exterior but inwardly a very selfish style.

  • In Mrs. Roosevelt's case is severe, due to exacerbation of Mangala-ruled Surya in 12.

  • Her dashingly handsome and rich father was utterly profligate and died of alcohol poisoning in an asylum.

  • Her equally profligate husband, despite his extraordinary personal charisma, and his "expansiveness" outside of marriage resulted in mistreatment of his wife.

Kanya-Shukra = Atmakaraka neechcha lord of 6 and 11 from Dhanusha lagna; 7 and 12 from Vrischika-Chandra.

  • No incoming Parashari drishti, but yuti Rahu makes for amplified troubles with women.

  • Combined with the neechcha Chandra, many troubles from women of all ranks and varieties, from the mother and mother-in-law to secretaries, daughters, and lovers.

  • neechcha Shukra + Rahu - much trouble from women, inability to feel beautiful - yet loved by the public (10)

  • Dignity in 10: Despite unfortunate house-lordship, Shukra in the prominent karma bhava, house of leadership and iconic representations of elite or governing figures, gives Mrs. Roosevelt tremendous visibility at the top of the governing elite (10). Her appeal to common women at a time of national catastrophe (the Great Depression and WWII) was exceptionally strong. It was her specifically non-glamorous, sensible, and plain style which allowed those suffering from poverty and conflict to find in her a role model and guide.

  • She bore indignity with dignity - and was much loved by several generations of trouble-bearing women because of it.

  • Shukra as lord of all non-trine, non-kendra bhava, is not a weak benefic.

Mithuna-Shani = L-2 + L-3 from Dhanusha lagna; L-3 + L-4 from Vrischika-Chandra.

  • Shani receives Parashari drishti of Mangala; Mangala is the dispositor of Shani's lord Budha. This chain of control indicates significant clandestine activity and private relationships within the marriage and also perhaps Mrs. Roosevelt's international espionage service as requested by her husband FDR.

  • in the navamsha, Shani enjoys uchcha status yuti Mangala - suggesting her husband's high responsibilities in times of great conflict.

  • Shani/Mithuna/bhava-7- habitual infidelities of both spouses. Shani in Mithuna/7 per se = notoriously difficult for marriage, as it brings the L-2 for second marriage into the house of the first marriage, i.e. the malefic lord of 8th-from-yuvati enters Yuvati. When combined with the damaged marriage-karaka Shukra, the prognosis for a conventional, monogamous marriage is grim. However, a non-conventional marriage did emerge and the partners served their nation brilliantly at a time of tremendous need, despite their personal travails.

  • One benefit of the L-3 in bhava-7 can be that the partners are able to remain in conversation however strained, and that a sibling-type bond may be adequate to replace the lost intimacy of marriage. The uchcha status of Shani in navamsha suggests that her husband maintained respectful and goal-oriented communications with his public-partner wife and that both parties placed public duties above the comfort of their own personal preferences.

  • Shani rules no trinal house from either Dhanusha lagna nor Vrischika Chandra. Therefore Shani is not a weak benefic.

Kanya-Rahu = Rahu in bhava-10 gives the effect of the neechcha Shukra and Rahu's lord Budha.

  • Neither Shukra nor Budha qualify as benefics. Rahu is not a weak benefic.

Meena-Ketu = Ketu in bhava-4 who gives the effect of radiant Simha Guru.

  • The parents are nearly non-existent in the early life. Mental health issues or substance addiction for the parents. (her father died in an asylum from extreme alcohol toxicity, note also the dissolution of Surya).

  • Incoming drishti of Shani gives discipline in home management roles, and some moral or religious restriction on home behavior.

  • Ketu in bhava-4 - unsettled "wandering" conditions in the childhood home (yet the home is very prosperous materially due to strength of L-4 Guru)

  • Not a weak benefic.

  • Due to the positive nature of Lord Guru, Ketu will bring gains of wealth, property, and religious optimism during His periods

Marriage:

  • 7th-from-Chandra = bhava-6 -health problems for husband, conflicts re: troubled, taboo-breaking women ( neechcha Shukra + Rahu = lord of 7th-from-Chandra)

    • with Surya - alcoholic father - also karako bhavo nashto = strong Guru/9

    • with L-7 Budha = private promiscuity in marriage

In Shukra-Mangala period:

  • Eleanor Roosevelt - mother of six children by Franklin Roosevelt - discovered the passionate and romantic love-letters of her husband to his mistress (and her secretary!) Mrs. Lucy Mercer.

  • Mangala = lord of Mesha = the emotionally devastating, lord of 6th-from-Chandra.

  • Mangala = lord of Surya in the clandestine 12th house.

  • Her Chandra occupies Vrischika in bhava-12 with many psychologically worsening complications.

  • Mangala generates a significant Kuja Dosha.

  • However the basic pattern is true for anybody:the Vimshottari period of L-6 from Chandra and its broken-promise pain can be emotionally devastating.

The much beloved Mrs. Roosevelt died at her Manhattan apartment on November 7, 1962 at 6:15 p.m., at the age of 78.
