Betty might have wanted the job - and this like most political careers was indeed a two-person career. Ford likely accepted the duties from a deep sense of patriotic obligation, as Chandra rules bandhu bhava.

In any case the only real success of his tenure was maintenance of national stability (Chandra, Shani) during a period of profound popular distress over the moral failings of government.
