Sample Sibling Charts

Jyotisha Indicators for Siblings in general, younger sibling in particular:

  • Main indicators

    • House -3: Sahaja Bhava, & L-3

    • Occupying planets in house-3 radix

    • House 3rd-from-3: Putra Bhava, & L-5

    • karaka Mars (Mangala), & 3rd-from-Kuja

    • 3rd-from-Chandra

  • older siblings, house-11 (see birth-order counting method below)

  • Dasha & bhukti periods of L-3

  • Drekkhana (D-3 divisional chart)

  • L-3's navamsha lord, in radix

Whatever has to be known through Sahaja Bhava be also analyzed through the 3rd from Mangal.

  -- BPHS Ch. 7, Shloka 39-43

... if there be malefics in third house from Mars and if that house, its lord and Mars be not well-placed owing to their being in debilitation, inimical houses, etc., these dispositions would give adverse results to the native's brothers and his valor would also be affected.

-- Sankheta Nidhi, Ch. 3, Shloka 35

How to locate a particular sibling in the radix chart:

Younger Siblings are found in radix by counting increments of 3 houses, starting from the 3rd house, as follows:

  • your immediate younger sibling = house 3

  • that immediate younger sibling's younger sibling = house 5

  • next younger one = house 7

  • next younger one = house 9

  • next younger one down the line = house 11, & so on

Elder Siblings are found in the radix by counting increments of 3 houses, starting from the 11th house, as follows:

  • you are #1 =  the first house, or lagna

  • your immediate elder sibling = house 11

  • that immediate elder sibling's immediate elder sibling (i.e., two above you in birth order) = house 9

  • next elder = house 7

  • next = house 5, etc.

If your sibling group is large enough to have duplications - more than six children - there will be powerful similarities between the siblings who end up being represented by the same house.

E.g., if you are the eldest of eight children, you will notice strong similarities in your relationship to your immediate younger sibling and your 7th younger, between #3 sibling in your family and #8, etc.

Look for the relationship between the two houses in question to see the relationship between you and that sibling.

E.g., if Saturn occupies house 11 and you have an immediate older sibling, we know that this sibling is under a lot of pressure, has major obstacles, etc. and also that sibling applies pressure on to you because Saturn sitting in 11th house will aspect the lagna - which represents you

A few observations about siblings:

Surya (Sun) radix-11 nearly always "destroys" the elder sibling.  Typically Surya in 11 signifies that the native is the eldest child in his/her family.

Unimpeded Mars *drishti* to sahaja bhava will normally guarantee the birth of younger siblings

Check other indicators such as Saturn aspects to make sure, but usually Mars aspect to sahaja bhava is fruitful for siblings.

However, Mars *occupying* house-3 frequently denies the birth of younger siblings

Again, check other aspects.  E.g., Moon occupying sahaja bhava or an exalted L-3 are helpful energies which might create a good sibling despite the "karako bhavo nashto" which occurs when karaka Kuja occupies the sibling house.

Yoga for siblings:

If Sahaja's lord along with Mangala drishtis Sahaja Bhava, the native will enjoy good results due to Sahaja Bhava. Alternatively, these two grahas may be in Sahaja itself."

-- BPHS Ch. 12, Shloka 2

Yoga for no siblings:

Should Sahaja's lord and Mangala be together in Randhra Bhava, destruction of co-born will result. Happiness in this respect will come to pass if Mangal or Sahaja's lord is in an angle or in a trine or in exaltation, or friendly divisions.

-- BPHS Ch 14, Shloka 5-6

The D-3 varga or "Drekkhana":

In matters regarding siblings, most Jyotishi will consult the special 3rd harmonic chart called the D-3 -- i.e.,  "Drekkhana."
