= lord of Chandra = lord of Arudha lagna = lord of 10th navamsha = radix lord of the karakamsha Uttarazadhalagna = "winner of the final battle" Budha-Makara-2 gains dignity in carrying out public roles due to the Kumara's auspicious parivartamsha yoga with orthodox, careful, detail-oriented Shani-10. |

= handsome, nice bones, respectable and dignified relationships with women. A successful fundraiser known for his savvy use of comportment and costume, the swami was known to be a favorite of the educated ladies in the Euro-American salons of his day.
Budha gains the uchcha status in bhava-9, the house of religious philosophy, professorship, and priesthood = an indicator of extraordinary verbal and written, analytical and articulatory intelligence.
Budha gains in bhava-1
bhava-1 (social personality and appearance) + bhava-9 (religious wisdom and sagacious teaching)
"religious publications" (3+9) = uchcha Budha (publications) + lagnesha Shani (self-identification with institutionalized priesthood ) in 9 (religious doctrine)
Chandra in Hasta Nakshatra = super-sensitive to the opinions of others, intuitive manual skills for writing and hand-craft, sensitive digestion
Exceptionally busy and detailed earth trine in the nativity = a man of the divine (trine) but also a man of large hierarchical organizations who accomplishes a good deal on the material plane. Matched by a water trine based in uchcha Shukra in the spiritual life navamsha.
Shani is already a favorable graha as lagnesha, and in occupation of bhava-9 indicates one whose life is dedicated to religious understanding.
Shani is exceptionally strong in Shad-bala (six strengths) = a diligent, determined worker.
Such a person may be gifted in many areas but a distinctive feature of the personality and lifestyle will be the focused attention on work tasks, meeting material obligations, and generally "getting things done" on an orderly schedule.
Vargottamsha-atmakaraka Surya in Dhanau, 12th radix and 12th navamsha, indicates a great humanistic teacher whose impact is much stronger in foreign lands than it is in his homeland. (Cf. Barack Obama, whose nativity features a similar setup. Obama's loyal base of international admirers is arguably much stronger than his following at home.)
Karakamsha = bhava-12 = Sw. Vivekananda is best known for being an exponent of meditation, reflection, and prayer (12); Dhanusha = world religions, guru-ship, preaching and teaching; temple culture; universities and philosophical knowledge
Ruchaka yoga = Powerful vital force in the physical body = athletic, competitive, energetic, muscular movement
Rahu in bhava-11 = elevation to a higher station in life via networking, social activism, marketplace earnings
Desire (Rahu) to be recognized as an important figure in communities, social connections, economic participation, application of scientific principles to social organization, rule-driven conceptual systems, and interlinked networks
Ketu in bhava-5 = non-discriminating observer stance of neutrality toward politics whilst often in political settings
Ambivalence (Ketu) toward bright lights, egocentric or iconic social roles, royalty and celebrity, gambling and games, amusements and entertainments, delights of children, theatrical or literary creative performance, political power, speculative thought, and personal intelligence.

Dasha narrative
age 0-4
L-7
Chandra in Hasta - practical, affectionate, attached to Mother
Very Early Childhood
Age 4-11
L-4+L-11 from Makara Lagna L-3+L-8 from Kanya Chandra
L-4+L-11 from Makara lagna = Parents (4), young friends (11), goals (11), and schooling (4)
L-3+L-8 from Kanya Chandra = emotional volatility, attraction to mystery stories
Ruchaka yoga = lots of energy for this little boy
Narendranath Datta was born into an aristocratic family.
The strong but exceptionally sober relationship between Narendranath's father and mother may be seen in bhava-9 (representing the Father, also also containing Chandra, representing the Mother.)
The remarkably strong and character-building parivartamsha yoga which generates a "virtual uchcha Budha" in bhava-9 and a "virtual swakshetra Shani" in bhava-1 reinforce the Jyotisha perception that both of the Swami's parents were fiercely moral and disciplined people; highly intelligent, but perhaps lacking tolerance for slackers or indeed any great sense of humor.
His father was a judge of the Calcutta High Court. His mother was a spiritual practitioner. According to a record of Vivekananda's talks, his advised him "Be very tranquil, but when necessary, harden your heart." [ Swami Chetanananda. "Swami Vivekananda". God lived with them. p.20] Note the Chandra-Shani yoga, which can be very hard-hearted indeed. This is a "specific" type of spiritual practice which is focused on material works; it is karma yoga with emotional repression.
age 11-29
continues the effects of Mangala
Rahu in Vrischika, bhava-11, continues the effects of L-4+L-11 Mangala. In addition to magnifying the effect of L-4 (education), Rahu occupies 3rd-from-Chandra, which generates an 18-year period of mental training and intensive verbal and written communications, predominantly writing.
Rahu-Shani, Rahu-Budha
From 1980 until 1984, Narendranath studied western philosophy and history, including world religions, at Scottish Church College in Kolkata.
Budha = karaka for graduation from school.
Rahu/Shani/Guru- age 18
First meeting with Ramakrishna.
Generally, according to the records, Narendranath did not like Ramakrisha too much, and he especially disagreed with Ramakrishna's idol worship (of goddess Kali).
Ramakrishna was formally uneducated, and Shani = L-6 from Chandra. Not the most auspicious beginning!
Rahu/Ketu, Rahu/Shukra
Ketu in bhava-5 of divine intelligence and creative performance. Rahu-Ketu periods are by definition psychically transformative, often forcibly.
Student of Shri Ramakrishna
YogakarakaL-5+L-10 Shukra occupies the lagna, in 5th-from-Chandra: an extremely auspicious set-up, which brings the inquisitive and well-educated young man into a prominent role (10) as both a student of the guru (sisya) and as a brilliant philosopher (5) of his own accord.
the native is also handsome (Shukra/Makara+Lagna with virtual Shani), talkative (Budha in lagna) and well-funded (Shukra), which of course adds to the overall auspiciousness of the situation.
Rahu/Venus/Chandra/Budha period:
Death of Shri Ramakrisha, August 16, 1886 - Shukra = lord of 2nd-from-9th. Ninth house represents the religious teacher, guru, priest, or sage.
Rahu/Surya, Rahu/Chandra, Rahu/Mangala
From 1888 until early 1893 (five years) Swami Vividishananda (as he was then called) roamed the length and breadth of India, meeting scholars, spiritual aspirants, railway workers, and dewans.
Rahu-Surya in a 2/12 angle evokes the peripatetic, meditational nature of the quest for truth represented by the Surya-Dhanau in vyaya bhava. This period would have brought numerous teachers and proponents of various philosophies.
Rahu-Chandra in a 3/11 angle evokes the friendly, ideological nature of Rahu in relation to the very practical Kanya (Hasta) Chandra with sober, working-class Shani. This is the period, in 1892, during which Vivekananda realized - at KanyaKumaritemple -- that the task of reviving India was going to be an extremely pragmatic, starting-at-the-bottom (Shani) type of venture:
"At Cape Camorin sitting in Mother Kumari's temple, sitting on the last bit of Indian rock - I hit upon a plan: We are so many sanyasis wandering about, and teaching the people metaphysics-it is all madness. Did not our Gurudevaused to say, `An empty stomach is no good for religion?' We as a nation have lost our individuality and that is the cause of all mischief in India. We have to raise the masses." ~~ Life and Philosophy of Swami Vivekananda, p.24
Rahu/Mangala period, while financially gainful (acquiring the funds to attend the Parliament of World Religions - no small financial feat) and very successful in missionary outreach (L-11, double-power) would also have been a period of poor health, since Mangala a natural maraka occupies 6th-from papagraha Rahu. Indeed, Vivekananda's traveling and vigorous spreading of the Good News took a toll on his health.
Age 39-death
L-3+L-12 from Makara lagna
L-4+L-7 from Kanya Chandra
Guru = lord of Dhanushya navamsha lagna = swamsha
Guru/Guru/Shukra/Shukra
Vivekananda left Bombay for Chicago on 31-May, 1893
Guru/Guru/Surya/Chandra
Tremendously positive reception to his speeches at the Parliament of World Religions in Chicago.
Vivekananda hailed as a magnificent orator, great teacher, and angel of truth.
Guru/Shani
Very tiring but extremely well received lecture tour of USA and UK.
Sends extensive monies (Shani = L-2) back to India to initiate social and educational reforms.
Guru/Budha/Ketu/Rahu
01 May 1897, Founding of Ramakrishna Math, Ramakrishna Mission, at Kolkata. Begin writing and printing of two Journals (Budha)
A period of enormous public acclaim in India for his message of ending caste animosities, empowering the masses through education, and the end of colonial oppression. Influence upon the next generation of leaders, who will eventually bring forward Independence.
Guru/Ketu/Surya/Surya
Despite declining health, Vivekananda returns to the WeSaint Surya in bhava-12for residence in foreign lands. Ketu indicates detachment. Ketu in 8th-from-Guru suggests the conditions of death. (Exhaustion, deep detachment).
Ketu gives results of L-5+L-10 Shukra, who occupies the auspicious 4th-from-Guru in the radix lagna. The journey while tiring was productive, with much sight -seeing, a world-famous speech in Paris at the World Congress of Religions (1900) and establishment of Vedanta Study Centers in Western Europe and USA.
Guru/Shukra/Chandra/Shukra
Return to India. Shukra continues the Ketu projects but with more strength. Thousands of visitors flow to him at the Belur Math. His educational projects flourished, with good funding and strong administrative support. Young politicians (5) flocked to hear his direction.
Guru/Shukra/Budha/Rahu
Death at age 39, 04-July-1902
Suffering from Asthma, diabetes, and general exhaustion from his nearly super-human world teaching schedule , the great teacher and guide died of cerebral hemorrhage while in meditation.
Prescient of his death , Vivekananda left instructions for his cremation and for the care of the Mission's affairs.
Makara-lagna lordships and conditions of death:
Guru = lord of 7th-from-Chandra which occupies 2nd-from-Chandra;
Shukra = lord of 2nd-from-Chandra.
In addition to granting extremely clear and compelling production of speech and writing, the L-6 Budha in radix lagna also produces lifelong health problems: asthma, diabetes (shukra), high blood-pressure.
Rahu is intense, hidden-deep (Vrischika) and explosive (in a rashi of Mangala).. Note Rahu's lord Mangala in Mesha (blood, spurting, hemorrhage) in bandhu bhava of 'the end of things'.
L-8 Surya gives the conditions of death. Death occurs in meditation state, conditions of mahasamadhi Apply.

Degree on the Navamsha lagna = 19 Kumbha. According to M.C. Jain in The Stars and your Future (p 145) 19 Kumbha =the "Degree of Proclaiming": "SYMBOL : Setting Sun shining on a waterfall, giving it the appearance of golden water.

Q: Respected Madam, Namaskar. I was reading about Shri Swami Vivekanand's horoscope and relation with his teachings.I feel that Surya was an intergral part of his personality.Whatever he has spoken it,seems to me that Surya rays were reflected from his soul. His words had message of Ethics,Courage,Truth and Divine love and fiery in nature. Is the reasoning correct? Best Regards Jai Ganesha
A: Definitely the vargottamsha Atmakaraka L-8 Surya, which occupies 4th-from-Chandra, is a component of Vivekananda's teachings.
It's always possible that if the birth time were rectified to be earlier, that Surya might be in the navamsha lagna also - definitely the sign of a great teacher. However, not to forget that Surya is the L-8, a very tantrik graha.
The graha which is L-8 contains the script for the Turning of the wheel of death and rebirth , the cycle of destruction followed by rebirth.
Swami Vivekananda was not primarily a teacher of Tantra. He was primarily a tremendous social philosopher, whose teaching emphasized the social and political implications of the Advaita Philosophy. He was an extremely structural (Shani) thinker who advocated massive-scale social re-programming, in particular the elimination of the "virus of caste" - which seems much better indicated via Rahu in the Makara navamsha lagna..
Surya is important for any philosopher in any culture, since Surya represents the Divine Intelligence which flows through all schools of philosophy in all lands. Indeed Ravi (and Divine Intelligence) is an integral part of *everyone's* personality!
However as L-8 in bhava-12, Surya is largely an internal, meditative influence for Vivekananda. His meditations must have been spectacular, and powerfully clairsentient. Indeed, he was apprised of his forthcoming death, and made rational plans for his funeral and the conduct of his organization's affairs, in expectation of his sudden demise.
Surya as atmakaraka therefore bhava-12 becomes the karakamsha. USA President 44 Barack Obama has a similar set-up. Karakamsha = vyaya bhava indicates that the native has as much or more influence internationally than one has in the land of one's own birth. It also indicates the power of one's imagination.
Nevertheless, Shani and Budha, the parivartamsha pair, have a much stronger public and active influence in this nativity. Vivekananda was a highly organized person , a stickler for time schedules, practical and earth-bound of mind, an extremely well informed student of the complexities of world society; and also he was essentially a rational philosopher - not so much a mystic. Although he counseled his followers to maintain shraddha(which is certainly a keynote of Surya) he was absolutely an advocate of the small man (Shani) and he preached the rehabilitation of India from the ground up (Shani).
It may be tempting to idealize such a great saint, teacher, and visionary, and to attribute his impact in this world to the brilliant glory of Surya. However I think that cold, hard, pragmatic Shani is much, much stronger in this nativity than hot, regal, self-focused Ravi.
It is to Lord Shani's extraordinary auspice for personal discipline and effective social programming, and to Lord Budha's gift for brilliant argumentation, articulation, and advocacy -- and of course Shani+ Budha's effect on both of his parents -- that we may look for the deeper reasons why Vivekananda became a revered world figure.
"An increasing ability to serve is the only reliable sign of spiritual progress."
