  • Denotes one who has a graceful method of expressing himself and his thoughts

  • and who will reach his place when life's midway has passed.

  • He will accomplish much and his words will ring so high that many will stop to listen.

Q: Respected Madam, Namaskar. I was reading about Shri Swami Vivekanand's horoscope and relation with his teachings.I feel that Surya was an intergral part of his personality.Whatever he has spoken it,seems to me that Surya rays were reflected from his soul. His words had message of Ethics,Courage,Truth and Divine love and fiery in nature. Is the reasoning correct? Best Regards Jai Ganesha

A: Definitely the vargottamsha Atmakaraka L-8 Surya, which occupies 4th-from-Chandra, is a component of Vivekananda's teachings.

It's always possible that if the birth time were rectified to be earlier, that Surya might be in the navamsha lagna also - definitely the sign of a great teacher. However, not to forget that Surya is the L-8, a very tantrik graha.

The graha which is L-8 contains the script for the Turning of the wheel of death and rebirth , the cycle of destruction followed by rebirth.

Swami Vivekananda was not primarily a teacher of Tantra. He was primarily a tremendous social philosopher, whose teaching emphasized the social and political implications of the Advaita Philosophy. He was an extremely structural (Shani) thinker who advocated massive-scale social re-programming, in particular the elimination of the "virus of caste" - which seems much better indicated via Rahu in the Makara navamsha lagna..

Surya is important for any philosopher in any culture, since Surya represents the Divine Intelligence which flows through all schools of philosophy in all lands. Indeed Ravi (and Divine Intelligence) is an integral part of *everyone's* personality!

However as L-8 in bhava-12, Surya is largely an internal, meditative influence for Vivekananda. His meditations must have been spectacular, and powerfully clairsentient. Indeed, he was apprised of his forthcoming death, and made rational plans for his funeral and the conduct of his organization's affairs, in expectation of his sudden demise.

Surya as atmakaraka therefore bhava-12 becomes the karakamsha. USA President 44 Barack Obama has a similar set-up. Karakamsha = vyaya bhava indicates that the native has as much or more influence internationally than one has in the land of one's own birth. It also indicates the power of one's imagination.

Nevertheless, Shani and Budha, the parivartamsha pair, have a much stronger public and active influence in this nativity. Vivekananda was a highly organized person , a stickler for time schedules, practical and earth-bound of mind, an extremely well informed student of the complexities of world society; and also he was essentially a rational philosopher - not so much a mystic. Although he counseled his followers to maintain shraddha(which is certainly a keynote of Surya) he was absolutely an advocate of the small man (Shani) and he preached the rehabilitation of India from the ground up (Shani).

It may be tempting to idealize such a great saint, teacher, and visionary, and to attribute his impact in this world to the brilliant glory of Surya. However I think that cold, hard, pragmatic Shani is much, much stronger in this nativity than hot, regal, self-focused Ravi.

It is to Lord Shani's extraordinary auspice for personal discipline and effective social programming, and to Lord Budha's gift for brilliant argumentation, articulation, and advocacy -- and of course Shani+ Budha's effect on both of his parents -- that we may look for the deeper reasons why Vivekananda became a revered world figure.
