Unless intuition is translated into clear thought, it will have no effect on our life, because no force can act until it is formed and directed.

~~ Lama Angaraka Govinda, The Inner Structure of the I Ching

"Vyaya" or how one's materiality is annihilated, comes through:

  • 12th house from radix lagna

  • 12th Lord

  • 12th from Chandra

  • 12th house from Shani.

Matters of domain-12 occur primarily on the astral plane. Dreams, meditations, & prescient apprehension occur in the native's imagination. The "imagination" is the field of imagery surrounding and penetrating the physical body.

Although psychic imagery from the astral plane feels "unreal" compared to five-senses hard reality, astral information is not inherently misleading or invalid. Rather, astral imagery is the seed from which most material experience will later develop.

Clairsentient skill is necessary to receive the guidance so freely offered by angels and other missionaries who show the pathway from physical to astral wisdom. Uchcha graha in domain-12 or L-12 in exaltation may indicate birth endowed with clairvoyant, clairaudient, or other clairsentient capabilities.

  • Periods of L-12 =  dissolution and deterioration, usually a slow process, including loss of attachment to the body and gradual cessation of physical movement, increasing the identification with the sleep-dream state

  • Periods of L-12 from Chandra may induce a tremendous sense of emotional loss which is deep and ineffable, and goes on for years (perhaps an entire mahadasha of L-12-from-Chandra.) One born into the period of L-12-from-Chandra may carry this sense of loss for a lifetime; similarly if the L-12-from-Chandra plays a critical role in identity construction such as location in kendra, esp in lagna. This is a sad period despite other gains and successes that may be associated with the gifts of the graha which is L-12-from-Soma.

When lagnesha occupies domain-12, the native is greatly inclined toward "bed pleasures" when lagnesha occupies domain-12. Naturally, domain-12 being 6th-from-7th, the unboundaried activities in this house are known for their animosity toward the boundaried contract of marriage.

Yet one rarely achieves emotional intimacy of genuinely shared partnership, due to being so identified with the world inside one's own head.

Profile of the pattern of material losses (which produce gains of moksha):

  1. 12th-from-12th, or Labha bhava

  2. Radix (D-1) planets in Meena (Pisces)

  3. Radix 12th lord within navamsha

  4. Radix 12th lord within Shashtyamsha (D-60)

  5. 12th-from-Brihaspati

Vyaya Bhava: Yogas to Other Houses

In regard to the potential negatives in domain-12 a dusthamsha, outcome of the script depends on the qualities of the L-12 and graha residing in domain-12. Domain-12 is the least harmful of the three major dusthamsha ( bhava 6, 8 and 12).

In addition to the negative associations of "loss" which accompany the "12th-from" angle from any lagna, Vyaya bhava has a number of highly positive associations such as spiritual meditation retreat, dream visions, prophetic revelation, clairsentient intelligence, and the safety of sanctuary in hospitals and monasteries.

Body parts

Physical agents

Agents of Domain-12: Feet and Spirit Guides

The primary agency of L-12 are those who make the bridge between the physical plane and the astral plane.

Most of these agents live in the subconscious image repository = the "imagination". These agents and their message are accessible in states of meditation, reflection, and dreams.

Q: What person or object in this world executes the karmic agenda of domain-12 and its lord?

A: The feet and the angels (angel means "messenger") will carry out the instructions of domain-12 and its lord.

6th-from-7th

broken promises, illness and conflicts of the spouse, sexually transmitted disease

Loss of vitality due to illness, animosity, and debt of the spouse or partner.

  • Diseases (6) of interpersonal sexual exchange (7).

  • Losses caused by servants and animals (6) of the spouse (7).

  • Losses caused by broken promises. The partner-agent who causes the loss may be any person with whom one has entered into an agreement, and who subsequently dishonors the terms of the agreement. Broken promises and disappointed expectations are psychically exhausting.

animosity & conflict with the marriage partner  If conditions in domain-12 = malefic and strong, Vyaya bhava "the dormitory" may become a locale of marital distrust.

  • Reasons for loss of vitality on the basis of marital conflict can range from the  spouse's "broken promises" (6) to the spouse's illness (6)   spending habits (6)   addictions (6)  or the native's decision to dishonor the marriage contract by taking a celibate spiritual retreat (12).

  • Personal exhaustion caused by sexually transmitted (7, genitalia, sexual congress) diseases (6). STD = a private type of illness known only in the bedroom or other sequestered spaces,  consistent with the invisibility of domain-12.

illness of [first] spouse  Many of the classic troubles associated with Vyaya bhava and the L-12 come from loss of one's own vitality due to psychic exhaustion from managing the physical illness of the spouse. Illnesses include chronic, temporary, substance addictions, and most types of mental health issues.

  • An example of this common situation = times when one spouse needs to spend a great deal of time attending an ill partner in hospital, convalescence home, or other sanctuary. Naturally, spending much time in the semi-dream-space of a healing sanctuary can reduce the vitality, as one attempts to psychically "match" the lower vibrations of quietude of illness.

  • Losses from the spouse's addictions are classic outcome of negative effect in 12.

  • Addiction includes the modern phenomenon of "workaholism" in which the spouse becomes neurotically unable to leave the workplace (6). The natural consequence of the spouse's self-debilitation through this addictive practice is a loss of vitality in the marital bedroom.

debts of the [first] spouse

  • Spouse's debts. Losses to one's own vitality originating in the unbalanced spending habits of the spouse = not enough coming in, too much going out of the partner's accounts.

crimes and jailing of the [first] spouse

  • same as the illness situation, except that hospital becomes prison

7th-from-6th

  • Contracts made with enemies, physicians, and police-military

  • plea-bargain and other deals with jailers, including judges, attorneys, and others involved in the punishment decision

  • Repaying of Debts , agreement to repay debt (is a good thing, but exhausting!)

  • Contracts & agreements with physicians, drug dealers, police, usurers,  servants, or underclass workers.

  • Sexual relations with underclass people, animals, servants or prostitutes.

8th-from-5th

  • Transformative healings of children, including surgeries & other therapy which benefit them.

  • Secret information about politics, gambling, performance arts, publishing, children.

  •  Taxes on creative works.

9th-from-4th

  • Blessings upon the home and ancestral lands.

  • Good fortune resulting from property ownership/stewardship (blessings of the devas who protect the land).

  • Maternal Grandfather (see also 9th from Chandra).

  • Benefits from education (inc. philosophical inquiry, research).

  • Priestly ceremonies grounded in land and sanctifying lineage roots.

  • Benefits from social security: public assistance entitlements for the citizens of a nation.

  • Benefits of emotional security: a healthy imagination.

10th-from-3rd

  • Professional & career service of the siblings, esp the immediate younger sibling.

  • Career developments from one's mentality & personal conversations (research, private arrangements).

  • Media careers, which handle ephemeral information & cater to the collective unconscious.

11th-from-2nd

  • Profits of accumulated wealth: Charitable Donations

  • Achievements from Death: Moksha /Liberation

  • Gains & profits from family lineage, from historical items such as art & music collections & historical knowledge, from moral and financial values, from the lineage of a people.

  • Hidden and often inaccessible wealth such as inherited lands that cannot be sold.

12th-from-1st

Loss of interactive personality, loss of social identity:

  • Loss of Personal Identity

  • drain upon physical vitality: exhaustion, distraction, worry

  • Losses on Good Account, loss which creates gain of Moksha

  • Imagination -- Subconscious, fantasy, private matters

  • Dreams

  • exploration of the psychic subconscious

  • non-rational perception imagination

  • Foreign residence - Foreign travel

  • Imprisonment = punishing, usually involuntary confinement

  • death, entry into astral plane (heaven or otherwise)

  • cessation, ends, finalities

  • fall from social identity position

  • Unfinished Works

  • separations, end of attachment (see also Ketu)

  • End of personal attachment to physical body

  • Renunciation (occasionally, forceful detachment = suicide)

Privacy

  • Matters of domain-12 are inherently private.

  • As an active agent, the L-12 can communicate one's private, imaginative information into the public consciousness are that is indicated by the house occupied by the L-12. However this will only happen if the L-12 is empowered to do so. By default, matters of vyaya bhava begin in privacy and remain hidden from all but the most intimate companions.

Privacy by occupying Graha

  • Surya in domain-12 tends to "hide one's light under a bushel".  The native channels divine creativity primarily through works of the imagination, or through intense ego-engagement with foreign lands. Strong ego-identity as a foreigner regardless of the country of birth or permanent residence.

  • There is much more to this person than meets the public eye. Full social recognition of one's personal genius is much reduced. Damages the relationship to the father: either loss of a father by death or social-emotional dissolution of the relationship to the father.

Exception: parivartamsha yoga with the L-1 (Madonna) may provide extreme publicity for the private, imaginative imagery and worldwide recognition.

Chandra in domain-12 keeps a strong shield of privacy around the emotional life and intimate emotional relationships. Even a very famous person with Soma in Vyaya bhava will be able to protect their most personal relationships from the peering eyes of the public. Damages the relationship to mother: either loss of the mother by death or social-emotional dissolution of the relationship to the mother.

Kuja in domain-12 privatizes and represses the sexual energy and encloses the aggressive instincts in a cocoon of imagination. Strong instinct toward "bed pleasure" affairs at a predominantly physical level of pent-up energy release.

Native typically has repressed or enclosed energy. The native cannot sustain healthy competition or combat, but can engage in long campaigns of espionage or subterfuge. There is a war going on in the native's subconscious which can cause massive restlessness throughout life. This position of Kuja could provide fuel for research but the native will be far too uneasy for sitting meditation (walking or dancing meditation could be more fruitful).

Damages the relationship to physical body: either loss of a the body's range of movement through tight enclosure or social-emotional dissolution of the relationship to the body.

Exception: other graha in domain-12 which strengthen the total house-rulership profile, or a parivartamsha yoga which brings virtual Mangala into the radix lagna, can bring the native into athletic or social prominence.

Budha in domain-12 privatizes the mentality. The native is blessed with clairsentience and is vividly able to receive guidance through meditation, reflection, or dreams.

Yet even uchcha Budha (for Thula lagna) which makes extremely elaborate and accurate arguments is largely unable to reach the public due to containment in the astral sanctuary. Damages the relationship to siblings: either loss of a sibling by death or social-emotional dissolution of the relationship to the siblings.

Guru in domain-12 grants an extraordinary dream life and spiritual companionship of great teachers on the astral plane. Like any graha in domain-12 however, Guru's outreach means that matters of His houses and his Karaka affairs are deeply private and enclosed from public view. Damages the relationship to children: either loss of a child by death or social-emotional dissolution of the relationship to the child.

  • Alan Alda (actor)

  • Kurt Cobain (songwriter)

  • Jack Welch (billionaire businessman)

  • USA Sen. John Edwards (2008 scandal)

  • Rev. Jerry Falwell

  • Nicole Kidman (actor)

  • Elvis Presley

  • Mrs. Nancy Reagan

  • Thomas Merton (spiritual writer)

  • USA Pres. Theodore Roosevelt

  • Gloria Steinem (journalist)

  • Virginia Woolf (author)

Shukra in domain-12 keep love relationships and one's aesthetic tastes quite private. The love of sweets such as alcohol and sensualbed pleasures is much increased, often to the point of addictions.

Damages the wife in a male's chart and in a female chart harms her relationships to other women. For a male, either loss of a wife by death or social-emotional dissolution of the relationship to the first wife. For a woman, same vis-ŕ-vis her sisters and close female associates.

  • Madonna

  • Camilla Parker - Bowles - Windsor

  • Barbara Walters (journalist)

Shani in domain-12 shows that one is hiding from knowledge of one's own karma. "Skeletons in the closet." One's sense of duty and obligation is often transferred away from the home culture and attached to duties in foreign lands. May provide a heavy sense of responsibility to care for the poor of the world, or to undertake massive burdens of global change.

The native is bothered by dark dreams and a deep sense of foreboding, but the reason is rarely know to one who cannot bridge back to the past life, even though dreams. Spiritual guidance is often blocked.

Damages the relationship to servants: either loss of a servant by death or social-emotional dissolution of the relationship to the servants.

The native must rely entirely on one's material sensibilities to derive meaning from their earthly path. It can be a sign of depression and despair, but usually is simply a mark of spiritual ignorance and  the inability to receive guidance through meditation, reflection, or dreams.

Beds and Bed Pleasures

Domain-12 rules the bed and "bed pleasures". The particular companion with whom one shares matters of domain-12 is the bed companion.

Ironically, domain-12 = 6th-from-7th, which suggests that the private intimacy of bed pleasures and the deep psychic communion experienced by those who sleep together is an activity adversarial to marriage. Indeed, marriage is a saliently public activity. Marriage is a its basis a social contract detailing mutual duties and benefits.

The other-worldly matters of domain-12 drain the native's energy away from the performance of contractual social duties, away from the upholding of promises and agreements, and "backwards" toward the past-life and the contract-less permissions of the private bed.

Moksha

The three "moksha" or "liberation" houses - bandhu bhava, randhra bhava, and vyaya bhava - all show the native's advance from material desires to spiritual dissolution of desire.  It is desire which causes incarnation, and the dissolution of desire which permits liberation.

The twelve rashi (signs) are divided into three equal sections.  The foundation section of each chart, houses 1-4, proceeds from the creation of physical body itself at house-1, and ends in the "resting place, end of matters" of bandhu bhava.

The fourth house profiles destruction of the one's ego-attachment to the products of Tanu bhava - the end of individuality, merging into the family identity. This merging of individual into family causes destruction of one's primitive identification with individual desires - and elevates the consciousness to the natural affection of putra bhava.

The personal creativity section, houses 5-8, proceeds from the creation of bodies for children or ideas at house-5 and ends in "emergent mystery" of  Randhra bhava.  In the 8th house, one merges ego-attachment to products of personal creativity into the larger cosmic creative forces.  (That is why healing is an 8th-house function.)

This merging causes destruction of one's primitive identification with one's own children, creative works, personal achievement, etc. - and elevates the consciousness to the natural compassion of dharma bhava

The contribution-to-civilization section, houses 9-12, proceeds from the creation of a body of wisdom-knowledge at house-9,  and ends in "full dissolution" of the social identity in Vyaya bhava.  In the 12th house, one merges the socially defined religious, philosophical level of truth with the ultimate universal truth.

This merging causes destruction of one's primitive identification with one's own religion, philosophical beliefs, knowledge, etc. - and elevates the consciousness to the natural liberation of Vyaya Bhava, "redemption".

Vyaya bhava, its lord, 12th-from-Chandra, 12th-navamsha, and L12 in Chaturamsha, give prognosis for spiritual liberation in this life.

L-12 Voice of the Ancestors

L-12 is actually an extremely influential graha. This graha shows what the ancestors want you to do. They will speak to you in dreams. They will meet you at the bridge when you cross over from physical consciousness to astral consciousness. They have a broader perspective and can guide you if you will tune your senses to pick up their signals. They want the best for you, since you are sustaining the lineage into which they will eventually be reborn!

"If you look deeply into the palm of your hand, you will see your parents and all generations of your ancestors.

All of them are alive in this moment. Each is present in your body.

You are the continuation of each of these people."

~~ Thich Nhat Hanh

Domain-12 represent the subconscious mind and its imagery, astral world of dreams, and imagistic communication from ancestor spirits

L-12 is associated with "loss". But this is a tricky area. L-12 does not automatically or even naturally give loss. What it does tend to give is confusion and dissociation, which create a psychic disturbance which results in unclear decisions which THEN give loss!

But matters of L-12 are not inherently evil nor is loss inevitable.L-12 may facilitate many types of gain, actually.

In a strong nativity, the ability to distinguish and heed (when appropriate) the instructions of the spirits as a non-material but often valuable level of information, can be a tremendous asset in life leading to gains of skill and wisdom

What L-12 does cause is "loss of personal control". Matters of domain-12 are rarely subject to conscious control.

The L-12 expresses the voice of the ancestors. This is a literal voice (usually a collection of voices) which the average person only hears in dreams or as a background "suggestion" in waking life.

Clairaudient folk can hear these voices in normal daily process, and they understand that the voices come from the spirits of those with whom one has past-life association.

However normal people cannot usually distinguish the voice of the ancestors. Most people confuse the voice of the spirits with their own natural voice expressing the body-mind's wishes and desires.

Due to the confusion (which is due to a lack of 'musical training') most people experience signals from the ancestors as unconscious manipulation. Things seem to be going exactly opposite of plan. That is precisely what I didn't want. What a terrible result, a failure after all my work. Etc.

The astral programming is felt as a drain upon one's  personal desire and a cause of "inevitable loss".

But this is not a problem of malicious spirits! It is a problem of psychic discrimination. It is necessary to learn to separate the desires of those who are no longer in bodies and who wish to use your body to accomplish their intentions, versus the desires of one's own self who is in a body and who should have priority in choosing what the body will or will not do.

Matters of vyaya bhava is composed entirely of images and are not amenable to rational analysis, thought or planning.

However, domain-12's activities can be rationally interpreted or analyzed at some remove (e.g., via Divination.)

L-12 Collaboration with the Spirits, Re-connection to Past Lives

Domain-12 rules one's previous lifetime. There are still many "live" connections from that lifetime which seek a voice in one's current life. Those spirit voices from the astral plane "break through" via the L-12, using the vehicle of its radix & navamsha house.

L-12 Loss turned to Gain

Matters of vyaya bhava can be skillfully directed through meditative communication with spirits, and that awful sense of malicious manipulation and "loss" can be completely avoided. One can experience a feeling of cooperation and connection with one's past lives and those who were beloved in those lives!

This astral re-connection when fully established is not at all a loss but a very satisfying gain! However it is necessary to pay the "bridge toll" of surrendering one's rigid ego-expectations of how things "should" be going in the current life, at regarding matters of the house which is occupied by the L-12!

In vyaya bhava and in the house occupied by vyaya's lord,  it is essential to have collaborative working relations with the spirits!

Losses on Good Account

Vyaya bhava provides "losses on good account" - that is, material losses converted to spiritual gain, the gain of moksha or liberation.

Loss of Personal Identity

Periods of L-12 involve loss of identity. If L-12 is strong - e.g. uchcha, swakshetra, or vargottama in important vargas - then the loss of identity may be quite severe. The identity will return, in a more seasoned and spiritualized form, when the period of L-12 has passed.

Periods of L-12 often involve shocking losses of lifestyle, social definition, identity-defining relationships (such as marriage), and even parts of the physical body. L-12 is a karaka for conflict in marriage & business partnerships. However, L-12 is not a death karaka.

Foreign residence or extended foreign travel

Periods of L-12 frequently involve foreign travel. Being away from home creates a moderate loss of identity. Usually without recognizing it, one is returning instinctively to countries and cultures where one has taken previous births. Foreign travel may seem purposeful for business or holiday objectives, but underneath the seeming purpose is a quest to reconnect with memories which contain essential information about the Self.

Because one cannot understand the language, customs, foods, family relations, etc. of the foreign land, the awareness is liberated for additional reflection. Foreign travel is thus for most people an extended meditation. Or at least, foreign travel is a meditation opportunity. In reality most people simply sleep more when they are away from their homelands.

Living or sojourning in a land where one does not speak the language or understand the customs creates a serious loss of identity. Long lasting periods of L-12 will move the native through a number of identity-losing environments.

The type of foreign travel that insulates the tourist from the culture around them, such as business conferences in international hotels, packaged holiday tours, etc., are expressions of domain-3 (short trips). The period of L-12 should produce more substantial disorientation.

If L-12 is strong, and rules two travel houses, forecast significant personality-identity loss through living in a  foreign culture during the period of L-12.

E.g., Shukra for Vrischika lagna rules both domain-7 and domain 12; Guru for Mesha lagna rules both domain-9 and domain-12.

As with all L-12 effects, this loss of identity which puts the ego "on hold" for awhile, gives the native an invaluable experience of ego disengagement, which advances spiritual awareness..

Lagnesha in domain-12

If lagnesha occupies domain-12, identity remains weakened throughout life. The native may be a spiritual aspirant, a late-in-life immigrant, a subordinate in domineering relationships, or they may work in a sanctuary enclosure such as hospital, monastery, prison, or  research lab. Whatever the environmental cause, the native's identity is masked (often by a uniform) and their ego individuality is constrained by the obscurity of their role.

Sacrifice, Selflessness

Given its task to complete dissolution of all three developmental stages of ego-attachment, it is easy to see why Vyaya is the preeminent house of sacrifice. Latin "Sacra" means sacred; "ficere" means to do or make.  "Sacrifice" is the process of transforming a lower vibrational entity into a higher vibrational entity.  Sacrifice, whether "willing" or not, is the keynote of Vyaya Bhava.

Charitable donations, expenses of holy pilgrimage, and earnings lost while time is spent in meditation & selfless service, are the type of financial loss profiled in domain-12 and 12th-from-Moon.

Spouse and children

As 6th-from-7th domain-12 signifies conflict in marriage and business partnership. During periods of L-12, the conflict may manifest as spouse/partner's illness, financial troubles, law breaking, or other imbalanced behaviors.

As 8th-from-5th, Vyaya bhava turns the cycle of birth & death regarding children. L-12 is *not* a karaka for death of child. Rather, L-12 signifies major phoenix-like trauma and healings, including surgeries or psychic therapies, for the children - esp. the first child.

"If Dhana's lord is in Vyaya Bhava, the native will be adventurous, be devoid of wealth, and be interested in other's wealth, while his eldest child will not keep him happy."

--- BPHS Ch. 24, shloka 24

Marriage problems in domain-12:

6th-from-7th indicates animosity in marriage and illness or indebtedness of the [first] spouse

6th-from any bhava shows the person represented by that house engaged in their karmic struggle with enemies, debts, and disease.  So, naturally, 6th-from-7th represents debts of the [first] spouse. If your 6th house or its lord is strong, this life will be scripted to enforce neutrality regarding the spouse's debts.

Periods of L-12 do come around regularly. Like any other type of loss, impoverishment through the illness, animosity, or poor financial judgment of the spouse are precious opportunities for moksha.  Simply approach the problem with neutrality, accepting the reality of karmic payoff through the vehicle of spouse's contribution to your life.

12th-from any house shows one's liberation from bondage to that house's signification.  For example, 12th-from-7th which is Ari bhava shows final divorce, the end of the first marriage.  12th-from-2nd or tula bhava shows shows second final divorce, the end of the second marriage. Etc. [Note divorce is not 12th house; but rather 6th house which is 12th-from-yuvatisthana.]

Gems for L-12

If your 12th house or its lord is strong AND you are married, do not wear the gem for L-12! Doing so encourages marital conflict.

By contrast, L-12 can be a very auspicious planet for the celibate religious.

If you have taken vows of austerity, you consciously desire ego-detachment, and you like living in an enclosed space, then L-12 will help you to achieve your meditative goals.

If you are finished having a personality - just really done with it - by all means accept the gift of the gem for L-12!

Fantasies, Imagination, and Pleasures

As the wellspring of detachment from material reality and the bridge between one's current and previous lives, Vyaya houses the subconscious, the imagination, dreams, and fantasies. All moksha houses are "resting places" or beds.  Naturally Vyaya is associated with  "bed pleasures" - romantic-sexual fantasies, and the companions who help us indulge them.

Perhaps ironically, elaborate sexual imagination detracts from the "business" of marriage.  As 10th-from-10th, yuvati bhava is primarily concerned with public status gained through partnership.  As 3rd-from-5th, yuvati focuses on "task" of producing children. While the "task" is famously accomplished in approximately three minutes, matters of Vyaya bhava are liberated from the ego-attachment to time... So there is a natural animosity between the public performance of marriage duties versus the resource-squandering private indulgence in "bed pleasures".

Of course it is possible to develop the romantic and sexual imagination within the bounds of holy matrimony.  However, yuvati bhava is an "artha" or material gains house.  Ego-attachment to status of marriage is a good thing for the stability of organized society, but it is not a good thing for spiritual liberation.  One of the peculiar effects of loosening of ego bondage to public status is the loosening of rules for expressions of love.

Thus those with a strong Vyaya  2nd-from-11th (sensual enjoyment of extramarital affairs)  may enjoy the company of outside lovers.  Alternatively, they may prefer divine love to human love, and accordingly seek sanctuary in monastic life.

Recent worldwide proliferation of "love marriage" as opposed to traditional arranged marriage signals both loosening of parental ego and the breakdown of society through weakening of marriage duty.  Check the relationship between Vyaya (bed pleasures), putra (sentimental love), labha (extramarital affairs), and yuvati (formal marriage) bhava's to determine the native's balance.

Body Parts

  • left eye

  • feet

  • lymph system

  • wounds from accidents

Strong Vyaya bhava gives clear vision through the left eye and also energetic clarity of reflective intuition, the psychic "left eye".  Feet will be intelligent making an excellent dancer.

Conversely, malefic effect on Vyaya sthana may provide trouble from sluggish lymph drainage or wounds that resist healing, with extended convalescence, especially during L12 periods.

The native blessed with strong Vyaya bhava (feet) and Sahaja bhava (hands) can be skilled in healing through foot reflexology.

Imprisonment

  • Periods of L-12 may feel physically or psychologically sequestered. Captivity within some type of enclosure, ranging from monasteries and religious compounds to prison camps and worse. (Dungeons and holding cells under the ground must involve the 4th house however.)

  • The Native suffers from lack of free movement ultimately caused by insufficient entitlement to dynamic life force. Much suffering through lack of identity, dissolution of personality, lack of recognized social or physical definition and the privileges which accompany full possession of identity.

  • L-12 in 3 = statelessness, wandering, refugee.

  • Inability to fully energize the muscular, animal form. Prolonged illness due to absence of vitality.

  • Period of the L-12 + sub-period of a graha which occupies the 12th-from the L-12 can = result of karmic imprisonment, under even the best circumstances.

  • Sometimes imprisonment is less brutal and can be utilized as a forced retreat for purposes of study and reflection. However normally the experience of lacking the power to direct one's body at will, being corralled into an enclosure, is a negative feeling.

Moksha

  • Strong L-12 or empowered graha in 12 = physically troublesome. Yet spiritually a moksha bhava can bring liberation.

  • When conscious, L-12 gives the gift of the opportunity to complete the transitional re-entry from material consciousness back into primary astral consciousness (i.e. "death").

  • Excellent when L-12 = an empowered graha to show the way of meditation, prayer, clairsentient apprehension.

  • Superior trance-medium capabilities. Coherent relationships with the ancestors.

Foreign Residence - Foreign Travel

Bhukti of the 12th lord will provide foreign travel or foreign residence.  (Compare to 3rd lord who grants short-term travel, such as brief holiday vacations, domestic business trips or frequent intercity commutes.)

For some nativities, "foreign" can mean remaining within the national boundaries of one's own country whilst living amongst a people (for example one's in-laws) or in an ethnic region which is slightly different culturally from the place one was raised.

For other nativities, if the 12th-lord is especially strong for good or ill, a dramatic change of environment such as moving from the first world to the third world or reverse, can transpire.

The essence of 12th-house experience is isolation with an element of animosity from the parts of oneself regarding which one is in denial. Therefore whatever extreme of alienation, separateness, and foreignness - that transcendent or terrifying sense of living in a private bubble - the 12th lord by character requires, will occur during the periods of the 12th lord.

The period of the 12th lord might bring a change of residence from one continent to another, or from the city to the countryside, or from the home of one's parents into the home of strangers.  But there will always be a theme of separateness, cultural (possibly national) foreignness, and needing to live in the "sanctuary space" of one's own head in order to survive the mini-death of not being adequately understood or recognized.

If the 12th lord occupies the sign of Mithuna, for example, periods of the 12th lord tend to induce immersion-type travel experiences where the native must cope with radically different language and culture environments.  Mithuna being a sexual sign, a Mithuna 12th lord brings some tendency to develop sexual relationships with the foreign people during one's sojourn, in order to insure survival by bonding deeply with foreign environments.

Should the gainful 11th lord occupies house-12, the native may experience profit from his longer travels.

The 12th-lord brings dissolving energy, the energy of detachment and preparation for death, into whichever house He occupies.

L-12 rules sleep.

Native's sleep patterns may be determined by function of L-12.

E.g., L-12 in domain-8 is 'hidden' or "destroyed" which gives meditation but also - naturally if one is conscious during the astral phase -  also loss of normal sleep.

"The most painful thing on earth is a pleasant memory.

This nostalgia that sometimes comes over us isn't an accident. It's a message. It has something to tell us.

We're programmed to indulge in life, but this haunting nostalgia is a subliminal message from another plane. It's the homing instinct of the mundane mind.

At its best, it's what draws us back to the Father.

Nostalgia is a window to the soul, and the soul is lost to man as he lives.

Nostalgia is the soul's memory of prior experience. Touching it, you touch the Eternal. "

Maternal Grandfather and Paternal Grandmother

The single most important person in anyone's life, for good or not, is the mother.

In most cultures, the second most important person at least in childhood is the mother's mother, who is found in the 4th-from-Chandra. Maternal grandmother's home = 4th-from-4th, kalatra bhava.

  • Maternal Grandfather is (emotionally) 9th-from-Chandra and (materially) 9th-from-4th = vyaya bhava

  • Paternal Grandmother = (emotionally) 4th-from-9th-from-Chandra and (materially) 4th-from-9th = vyaya bhava.

  • Although these two grandparents have different emotional relationships to the native, both maternal grandfather and paternal grandmother are materially represented by conditions in the native's 12th house.

Consistent with their profile in 12th from lagna, both mother's father and father's mother tend to play more background roles socially and emotionally than, by contrast, the mother's mother in the dominant seventh house.

If one is blessed with a strong or busy 12th house, one might find that the social or spiritual influence of the father's mother and the mother's father is remarkably strong.  Often these relatives have left their bodies before we are born; yet, one may hear their psychic voices, or feel an impulse to follow in their footsteps.

Other relatives in the radix chart:

mother's father's mother [maternal great grandmother]

= 4th-from-9th-from-4th

= your sahaja bhava, 3rd house

mother's father's father [maternal great grandfather]

=     9th-from-9th-from-4th

your randhra bhava, 8th house = father's father's mother [paternal great grandmother]  =

=     4th-from-9th-from-9th/p>

your randhra bhava, 8th housefather's father's father [paternal great grandfather]

= 9th-from-9th-from-9th

= your rashi lagna, 1st house

If you ever see an image such as a painting or photograph of your paternal great grandfather, you might notice a powerful physical resemblance due to this relative's psychic energy helping to form your physical appearance, which is the work of the radix lagna.

Deceased relatives all have a piece of one's own self!  It's a nice idea to honor them.

If we do not wish merely to know intellectually about the view of emptiness, but rather wish to experience it ourselves in our own continuum, we should build a firm foundation for this.

Then, according to our mental ability we should hear and consider both the sutras and treatises which teach the profound view of emptiness as well as the good explanations of them by the experienced Tibetan scholars in their commentaries.

Together with this, we should learn to make our own ways of generating experience of emptiness accord with the precepts of an experienced wise man.

Realizing the Truth while Living in the World

Question:

In order to realize the truth spoken by the Buddha, is it necessary to be in a retreat situation, or can one realize it by doing work of a helping nature in the community?

And what is the relative importance of both kinds of situations?

His Holiness:

In general, if one can do both, it is best.

I think this is the practical way to do it; for the greatest part of the year, we have to live in society, we have to lead a good life.  We have to live properly, and be an honest, sincere human being.  But for a few weeks, or two months, or three months, to make retreat, to forget other worldly business and to concentrate solely on one's practice, I think this is the very best way.

If, however, someone has a special vocation for the hermitic life, if someone has a talent for living and practicing in isolation and can make a special effort to achieve good results, then of course it is a different question.  Then it may be worth-while to live in complete isolation and to put all of one's energies toward practicing.  But this is the exception and quite rare.  I think that among one million people, there may be one or two with this type of talent or vocation.

"Life lasts at the most about a hundred years. This is very short compared with geological periods.

If we spend this short time doing harm, our life will have been pointless.

Everyone has the right to happiness, but nobody has the right to destroy the happiness of others.

In no event can the goal of human existence entail making anyone suffer."

Sleep Consciousness

"[discussion of meditation, and clinical evidence of consciousness during sleep] Allan Hobson:

... in non=trained subjects, when we perform awakenings in the various stages of sleep, we get less and less evidence of conscious experience. In other words, the deepest stage of non-dreaming sleep, defined physiologically, is associated in our untrained subjects with very low levels of consciousness. And in fifty percent of the awakenings there is no evidence of consciousness at all.

Thubten Jinpa:

I think there is a certain misunderstanding of this term "consciousness." In the Western philosophical or psychological term, consciousness is conscious, whereas, when Buddhist translators use the term, it has a wider meaning. It includes both the subconscious and unconscious levels as well.

Alan Wallace:

The terms "conscious" and "unconscious" are not used in Buddhism. Rather, one speaks of differing degrees of clarity and subtlety of awareness. Even when someone has fainted, for example, and is regarded, in Western terms, as unconscious, from a Buddhist perspective a subtle level of consciousness is still present.

Dalai Lama:

As early as the seventh stage [of the eight stages of sleep,] approaching deep sleep, you would say that your awareness has declined. That is, the mind is not clearly apprehending anything.

In Buddhist psychology, we refer to sleep as one of many mental factors. There are fifty-one mental factors, among which sleep is one. But it is said that the mental factor of sleep precedes the deep sleep state, meaning the non-dreaming state, just as fear may proceed fainting without going into it.

Consider an analogy: Once you have fainted, you feel no fear. However, it can be fear that leads to your fainting. So the fear doesn't go with you into the fainting. Thus, analogously, in the non-dreaming deep sleep state, the mental factor of sleep has already passed."

Cleanliness

The environment where you are doing the meditation should be properly cleaned.

While cleaning, you should cultivate the motivation that since you are engaged in the task of accumulating great stores of merit by inviting the hosts of buddhas and bodhisattvas to this environment, it is important to have a clean place.

You should see that all the external dirt and dust around you is basically a manifestation of the faults and stains within your own mind.

You should see that the most important aim is to purge these stains and faults from within your mind.

Therefore, as you cleanse the environment, think that you are also purifying your mind

Develop the very strong thought that by cleaning this place you are inviting the host of buddhas and bodhisattvas who are the most supreme merit field, and that you will subsequently engage in a path that will enable you to purge your mind of the stains of delusions.
