1st-from-4th

(body parts, physical level)

The Moon is our Mother

Domain-4 rules conditions in the childhood home and the old-age home. As 9th-from-8th, shows one's understanding of the conditions of one's own death, and emotional response to those conditions. If you want to know what was going on in a person's heart at the time of their death, look into domain-4.

Bandhu bhava the house of Earth Root is called the basis of the incarnation.

  • Ethno-Cultural Roots

  • Early childhood and old-age Home

  • Fundamental emotional and social security; entitlements

  • Work toward securing and protecting one's society

  • The cultural indoctrination levels of education which facilitate a stable society:

    • maternal "immersion" training of child in the manners & customs of one's people. Basic personal legitimacy established in bandhu bhava, during the first seven years of life.

    • formal education that develops post-maternal cultural competency training, such as (varies by culture): ethnic dance skills, literacy or numeracy skills, skill-based crafts, skill training in arts & sciences

    • preparation for established social roles, such as (varies by culture): physician, teacher, blacksmith, mechanic, psychologist, shaman, fisherman, parent, priest, etc.

    • Some societies have a small number of social roles; others have hundreds of defined roles and elaborate educational pathways toward achieving legitimate practice rights in those roles (e.g., USA financial licensing, Ph.D. or M.D.) With the breakdown of traditional families in the modern West, the USA has recently initiated "parent training" certification.

    • educational certification that gives proof of   entitlement to act in a socially responsible role: examinations, licensing, & diplomas.

  • Patriotism, nationalism, loyalty to caste, class, tribe, or nation

  • Defense of the nation, "Homeland Security"

  • Land ownership; care of the land, the Motherland

  • Social validation of "Property" ("belongs to me"), defense of property, and laws of entitlement to ownership (varies by culture).

  • Social Conformism and punishment for non-conformity

  • Mines, subterranean events,  Under-layer, bottom of things, basis or foundation.

  • Foundations of a building. Basement of a building. Underground storage and shelter, hidden silos (for grain, weapons, or any hoard). [See domain-2, for what sort of things the native is hoarding in this life.]

  • The lower realms of the spirit world.

  • Graves, underground burials.

  • The special stabilizing & endurance-giving nutritive properties of plants which grow underground (root vegetables).

  • Cooking, nurturing, home-making, protecting, supporting, care-taking. Gardening, care of the Earth.

  • Primary care-takers of any person, whether or not the care-takers are blood relatives.

    Domani-2 determines family of origin, but domain-4 shows the secure, legitimate maintenance roles which interact to form a secure & predictable society. Agents of domain-4 need not be members of the same family, but they will have strong cultural values in common.

Education:

  • Bandhu bhava "Binding to Earth"  vs. Dharma bhava "Holding to Heaven"

  • Educational practices of dharma bhava are not targeted toward maintaining a stable earthly society but rather toward maintaining a structured set of  interactions with heaven.

  • The indoctrination & secure-society goals of education in domain-4 are naturally at variance with the wisdom-acquisition goals of higher religious training of domain-9.

  • In the Jyotisha charts, domains 4 and 9 are naturally positioned in an adversarial 6/8 angle.

Scope of entitlement and foundations of emotional security:

  • Domain-4 is the foundational house of the incarnation.

  • Entitlement to social support, protection, and legitimacy established in bandhu bhava, in childhood and throughout the indoctrination process, will define the native's sense of "belonging" throughout life.

  • Damage to bandhu bhava indicates instability in the childhood home, and adult difficulties to establish a secure, comfortable, approved, and legitimated place in society. Shani in domain-4 or ruling bandhu bhava gives beneficial results through socially approved skills training, over time.

Psychology

  • When a person feels insecure and "defensive", one will begin expressing emotional grievances of domain-4 -- particularly any karmic issues there.

  • For example (but not limited to!) deprivation of property ownership or licensing, need for fences or barriers, national defense, us-and-them, deprivation of education, deprivation of parental protection. This is the language of exposure, insecurity, ungroundedness, un-belonging, lack of preparation or protection.

  • Fundamentally, disruption of domain-4 significes an absence of unconditional love from the earthly mother.

2nd-from-3rd

  • Domain-4 = the wealth & knowledge values of the immediate younger sibling;

  • the speech & language patterns of the sibling group & intimate peer group;

  • the death of younger sibling (in period of L-4 or L-9).

3rd-from-2nd

  • Domain-4 = communication patterns, beliefs & mental practices of the family (family mental health)

  • record keeping re: property-values & other hoarded wealth

  • meetings to discuss history & stored wealth

  • writings about history & values

  • family literacy & manual skills;

  • self-made wealth developed on basis of family funds

  • communications with the mother's older siblings.

4th-from-1st

 5th-from-12th

  • Domain-4 = speculative gain from foreign travel & relationships with distant cultures;

  • children of foreigners (auspicious for foreign adoption);

  •  creativity increased through meditation & sanctuary practice;

  • literature & performance art benefiting from input of the subconscious imagination.

6th-from-11th

  • Domain-4 = illness & debts of friends;

  • conflicts created by having friends in a larger networked community outside of the home;

  • conflict & imbalance with the father's siblings (home is the mother's turf!)

7th-from-10th

  • Domain-4 = Basis of public reputation

  • spouse of the leader (boss); relationships with people in power;

  • contracts & agreements with the government.

8th-from-9th

  • Domain-4 = the naturally adversarial relationship between those focused on ownership and protection of the Earth, vs. those focused on connection & interactions with the Heavens

  • hidden aspects of religion: healing, secret lineages, tantra; healing or destruction of the father;

  • [mother has] secret information about the father;

  • Stepfather; Fourth marriage

  • taxes on religious activities in order to strengthen the national defense,

  • forcing the priesthood into secrecy in order to

  • transformative change in the (male) priesthood & destruction of the temple (which moves the center of religion into the female home);

  • adaptation & re-interpretation of ancient rituals (which provides continuity of tradition over time).

9th-from-8th

  • Domain-4 = Great fortune from inheritance & legacy = receiving ownership of land

  • Wisdom through deep healing secrets = cures from plants which grow on the land

  • Ritual communication with the spirits of the property = continued safety & stewardship of the land

  • Good fortune through confidential, therapeutic environments = deep emotional security & trust

  • Priesthood of mysterious forces = deep roots in the Earth

10th-from-7th

11th-from-6th

  • Domain-4 = Gains from loan debt/usury = the fruits of debt

    • ownership of buildings & lands through mortgage debt

    • ownership of vehicles & "property" (stuff) through "car loans" & consumer debt

    • completed education through student loan debt

  • gains from conflict management, police control = social stability & safety of property

  • gains from clinical medicine = returning home

  • fruits from keeping animals = protection, physical & emotional security (pets), farms & pastures, food from the edible animals (livestock)

  • gains from the mother's siblings = keeping property in the family

12th-from-5th

  • Domain-4 = sanctuary/retreat for children

  • sanctuary/retreat for creative works of genius

  • losses to the children (safe home = loss of freedom)

  • withdrawal from gaming & speculation; politics & theatre

  • children's foreign travels,

  • loss of children (typically through traveling or marrying into an outside culture, but possibly through imprisonment).

From the fourth house know the mother, conveyance, relatives, State Protection, house, friend, and arms.

-- Madhya Parashari, Ch. 9 , Shloka 4

House property, land and agricultural fields, maternal uncle, a sister's son, relatives, friends, conveyance (vehicular), mother, cattle wealth, scents and perfumes, dress material and garments, jewelry, happiness (sukha), the nadir, Hibuka, water, bridge and river are the names to indicate the 4th house.

-- Phaladeepika, Ch1, Shloka 11-12

Chandra = Karaka for Mother vs. Mother = Domain-4

Chandra represents one's emotional Self. The emotional Self is created through one's relationship to one's mother. Therefore Chandra is a karaka for emotion in general; and in particular Chandra is karaka for one's childhood process of building a coherent emotional Self from repeated emotional experiences.

Mother is typically the agent and referee of those core emotional experiences, so Mother and Self are very closely aligned.

Indeed, the bond of this core survival relationship is so intense and absolute that one may not be able to distinguish oneself from one's mother until age seven or later.

Domain-4 represents the childhood home. Because Mother is normally the absolute determiner of conditions in one's childhood home, domain-4 in effect also represents the Mother or primary caregivers who function in the Mother role.

But more accurately, domain-4 represents the mother's affairs, conditions in the early childhood home, family lands & property, & all the mother's estate.

Whether mother is queen over a few tin pots or a vast field of wealth, mother's estate, and her child's experience of forming its own Self in that estate, is seen in domain-4.

The astrological picture of mother, security, lands, vehicles & education encompasses

  • 4th house

  • 4th Lord

  • 4th-from Chandra.

Whatever results are to be known from Bandhu ... should also be known from the 4th of Chandra..."

BPHS -- Ch. 7, Shloka 39-43

In addition it would be foolhardy to jump to conclusions about mother, security, lands, or vehicles without surveying:

  1. 4th from Mercury (Karaka for 4th house)

  2. 4th-from-4th, or Randhra bhava

  3. Radix (D-1) planets in Karka (Kataka/Cancer)

  4. Radix L4 within navamsha (D-9, the 9th harmonic varga)

  5. Moon within navamsha

  6. Radix L4 within chaturamsha (D-4, the 4th harmonic varga)

  7. 4th house within D-4 and Moon in D-4

Sample Karka-lagna charts:

Here are the charts of Al Gore and George W. Bush -- both Cancer lagna, both Moon conjunct Jupiter in rashi, both very strong navamsha Moons.

Regardless of their political differences, their respective leadership missions are equally patriotic, and equally driven by a deeply emotional love of their homeland.

Body Parts

  • heart

  • lungs

  • breasts

If you have a strong bandhu sthana, expect the fourth chakra region of the physical body to function well.

Conversely, malefic planets affecting bandhu bhava may lead to dis-ease in the chest region.

Roots that Bind

Bandhu bhava or the 4th house is the root or foundation house of the entire rashi chart.  While Moon and lagna will describe the native's physical body, Moon and bandhu bhava will tell about the astral or emotional body.

Cancer, the natural fourth sign, signifies bondage.  Bondage is positive bonding when it manifests in an unconditional supportive relationship.  Bondage is positive boundaries when it manifests in owning a house with lands, or feeling patriotic.

At a dysfunctional body level, the disease called cancer results from the physical body clinging to waste cells.  These sticky waste cells bond to each other to form tumors.  Most healers acknowledge that the emotional pattern of clinging to the past accompanies the cellular bondage disease.

Mother and Emotional Security

Most basic of all roots in human life is connection to mother.  Bandhu bhava along with Moon profiles the mother in radix.  (Check Dwadashamsha Moon or 4th house for additional details on mother.)  Also in bandhu sthana, see mothering, care-taking, stewardship, and nurturing roles of all kinds.

Effect of the Mother seen via the child's chart:

  1. Chandra

  2. Bandhu bhava & L-4

  3. 4th-from-Chandra

  4. Dwadashamsha D-12: 4th-from-lagna  - or - 4th-from-Chandra [whichever is stronger]

Mother provides the core emotional security, the fundamental sense of being good and valuable, and having a place, belonging.  If things are going well in the mother house and with the Moon, the native will have good emotional and psychic grounding, and a pleasant emotional nature, which is the basis of all happiness in human life.

Stepfather

Usually the step-father or next-father is also the mother's second husband, but there can be other arrangements.  The "next" father - however he gained that position - is indicated by house-4.

As the 2nd-from-4th, bandhu bhava is one component of the profile of the mother's second husband, typically the stepfather.

A second important component of the stepfather would be 2nd-from-Chandra; it is also important to consult the Dwadashamsha in matters concerning parents.

Home, Land, Buildings, Properties

Most questions about property ownership, roots in the land, inherited lands, stewardship of the land, buildings, structures, the roof over one's own head (or lack thereof), and the fate of nations, can be answered by examining the fourth house and its attributes.

Most permanent possessions such as furniture are included in bandhu, as is hidden treasure.

One of the best yogas for material wealth is to have the family values grounded in the land ownership house:

If Dhana's lord is in Bandhu Bhava, the native will acquire all kinds of wealth.

-- BPHS -- Ch. 24, shloka 16

Vehicles/Clothes

Other vital forms of shelter and protection include clothing and vehicles of all kinds.  Bandhu profiles the quality and quantity of one's personal wardrobe, as well as all details of your road vehicle whether you ride on a donkey, elephant, palanquin, or Ferrari.  (However for trade in textiles see Ari bhava.)

Road accidents are determined by examining Mangal and Shukra, and any malefic effects on bandhu bhava. The Shodashamsha or D-16 is a fine-tuning for matters of vehicles.  D-16 will confirm whether the vehicle would be damaged or not, or whether passengers might be harmed.  Wider health-related issues which often stem from a road accident can be seen in D-30 Trimshamsa.

Security in society, Socialization via educational instruction, conformity

Dhana bhava profiles the family's values.  Dhana controls the individual's basic moral education, knowledge of tribal history, and education through the oral tradition.

Bandhu bhava profiles the formal education in broad cultural behaviors provided by the larger society, and the social security gained through conforming to public standards. (It is said that the two great desires of human nature are the urge to mate and the urge to conform.)

Bandhu bhava rules basic formal education.  A strong fourth house signifies that the individual will complete the basic schooling required to hold a government job.  In some nations, that means 10th class; in other nations, that means a university diploma; but in all cases, if bandhu is weak, there is a shortfall in formal education which deprives the person of full security in society.

Because it profiles the fundamental emotional nature which is determined through the relationship with one's mother, Bandhu is known as the "source of all ambitions."

Profession & Public Reputation of spouse/partner

As 7th-from-10th, Bandhu also shows the partner behind one's public standing.  If bandhu is strong, the couple both have dignity, and together they will support each other as they rise in public status.

As 10th-from-7th, bandhu bhava will display the dignity, rank, and professional status of the primary partner in both marriage and business.

If the native has a powerful 4th house, your first spouse is likely to have a good public reputation.  Concurrently, significations of your personal bandhu bhava -- your home, vehicles, and emotional stability -- are all improved.

Troubles in the 4th house, such as unfavorable transits, can wreak havoc on the spouse's or business partner's public reputation, dignity, or professional status.  The partner may suffer job loss which has obvious effects on your emotional stability and your home.

A steady but low-status 4th house, such as a bandhu bhava owned and/or aspected by Shani, indicates the first spouse's regular work habits.  He will serve faithfully in a steady manual labor position, and feel he must carry the world upon his shoulders..

For career of second spouse, see 10th-from-2nd, or labha bhava.  Third spouse is 10th-from-9th, or

For career of second spouse, see 10th-from-2nd, or labha bhava.  Third spouse's career is 10th-from-9th, or Ari bhava.  Etc.

Fourth marriage

If the 7th rashi and the 7th navamsha suggest multiple marriages, then we will find the profile of the 4th spouse in Bandhu Bhava.  As always, we find the 4th spouse's wealth in 2nd-from-4th or putra bhava, 4th spouse's siblings in 3rd-from-4th or ari bhava, 4th spouse's home & mother in 4th-from-4th or yuvati bhava, etc.

Like the nature of Bandhu Sthana itself, the fourth marriage is all about roots.  If Bandhu is stable, the 4th marriage partner (when indicated) resembles one's mother.  The fourth partner hails from a similar cultural background.  [Of course if Rahu or Saturn aspect or occupy Bandhu, the fourth partner could be lower class than native, foreigner, etc. according to occupying malefic.  Don't forget to check 4th navamsha!]

Ceteris paribus, the fourth marriage is conservative, emotionally stable, tradition-loving, focused on property, family, and belonging. All these traditional implications are that much stronger if rashi L4 is Saturn or Moon.  The fourth marriage may not be interesting, overly lively, or a sexual hothouse.  But it is grounded in the circle of  family love.

A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.

If your divination skills include Tarot cards, you may find a correspondence between the energy state of Bandhu Sthana and Ten of Pentacles.
