The bad news about L-6
Periods of the lord of Ari Bhava (L-6)
are typically very stressful. Events triggered by Vimshottari
periods of the L-6 include the breakdown of marriage
agreement (sometimes leading to divorce),
physical imbalance (leading to disease conditions), and social conflict (on
a large scale may include war, on a local scale includes exploitation and
crime.)
Every nativity has an L-6. Whichever
graha = the L-6, the periods of that graha will be problematic during one's
lifetime. Much depends on the disposition of the L-6 in terms of rashi,
bhava, drishti, and angular relationship to the current mahadasha pati.
However even the best graha becomes handicapped through loss of agreements
(12th-from-7th) when that graha becomes the L-6.
L-6 from lagna tends to bring
physical-material disharmony. L-6 from Chandra brings psycho-emotional
disharmony.
The good news about L-6
Untoward effects of periods of the L-6
may be substantially mitigated through selfless service to the less
fortunate. Periods of the L-6 are the perfect time to undertake a ministry
of service.
Personal misfortune which might be
predicted through the negative effects of the L-6 can be averted by serving
those who are victims of the same conflicts as oneself, however the
beneficiaries of service should be suffering that imbalance in a slightly
worse intensity than oneself. For example most of the karma of disease can
be averted through ministry of charitable service in medicine.
"Ubi virus, ibi virtus"
"the
strongest poisons make the best medicines"
Poison is in everything, and no thing is
without poison. The dosage makes it either a poison or a remedy.
~~ Paracelsus
Emotionally, from Chandra
lagna
The bhava which occupies the 6th position
from Soma and the graha which is Lord of the 6th from Chandra give highly
problematic agency during the current incarnation. In their Vimshottari
periods, the lord of sixth-from-Soma as well as the lord and content of the
house which is 6th-from-Soma will cause much travail.
The fundamental mechanism of 6th-from
angles is chronic imbalance. Results include argumentativeness,
exploitation, illness, conflict, and servitude arising from the emotional
relationship with the agent of L-6 from Chandra and graha associated with
the bhava which occupies 6th-from-Chandra.
The end result of these inconveniences
(often severe suffering) is the desirable outcome of intended payback of
moral errors in past lives. (Usually the error is caused by
intentional or inadvertent appropriation of the power of others.) However it
is especially difficult to remember one's spiritual intentions at birth when
engaged in the fast-paced lifestyle of the modern world. One intended the
benefit of recovery of balance through payback; yet in the present moment
the experience is one of acute disrespect, imbalance, and emotional pain.
Vimshottari periods of the L-6 from
Chandra are likely to contain significant emotional suffering and feelings
of servitude or exploitation by a manipulative master. Most notably period
of L-6 from Chandra are distinguished by the experience of giving
much more into the matters of that house than one is receiving in return.
If the bhava pati is benevolent then
one's servitude will be well-rewarded in some social, material, or spiritual
form of payment, yet the feeling of having been exploited is emotionally
definitive and the native suffers from the breakdown of contractual
agreements, the loss of relationship integrity, and the feeling of having
been cheated or betrayed by the agent (L-6) of victimization and
crime.
The 6th-from angle from Chandra
represents chronic and often severe imbalance in emotional expectations,
which is normally manifest in expectation that a particular relationship
(with the agent of 6th-from) will be loving, caring, balanced, or otherwise
provide equity and respect of contractual agreement. Respect and equity will
not be forthcoming due to the condition of servitude and exploitation
implied by the 6th-from angle.
Should the L-6 from Chandra permanently
occupy some critical relationship house such as 7th-from-radix-lagna or
7th-from-Chandra, there may be a repeating cycle of victimization and broken
promises in key partnerings and unions. If the L-6 from Chandra and the
house which occupies 6th-from-Chandra are neutral and do not contain key
relationship karakas (such as Shukra for the first wife or Guru for the
first husband) then the only problematic item will be the actual Vimshottari
periods of that graha which is lord of sixth-from-Soma.
If Guru (karaka for husband-1) or Shukra
(karaka for wife-1) should occupy the 6th-from-Chandra, emotional
exploitation and suffering related to the health or debt of the first spouse
will occur.
Guru for Thula lagna and Budha for Mesha
lagna are both particularly inauspicious graha. Should Guru or Budha also
occupy the 6th-from-Chandra in a nativity, expect periods of Guru (for Thula
lagna) or Budha (for Mesha lagna) to generate a narrative of intense
argumentation regarding the illness, debt, or broken promises of the
partner-spouse.
How to Resolve Karma of
Domain-6
Domain-6 is indeed the house of the
victim-class, and its denizens tend toward extremes of poverty, illness, and
perpetual social conflict. The default identity of one with strong
markers in domain-6 or 6th-from-Chandra is an underclass personality who is
always arguing and embedded in a victim mentality. The native is sick
from lifelong effects of irresolvable conflict originating in
negative thoughts (Budha).
However, it is worth noting that many of
those who hear the clarion-call toward a ministry
of service are gracious personalities who hold deeply religious
or humanitarian beliefs. They are typically well educated, and born into the
privileged classes.
Domain-6 is the house of "serve
or suffer". Therefore one with strong markers in Ripu Bhava need
not suffer personal animosity or illness, if one chooses to serve.
The cure for all ailments of Roga Bhava
is commitment to a spiritual practice of serving the needs of others. The
particular Others who require the service of one who has karma in domain-6
are those who have not yet achieved the consciousness to resolve their
own imbalances.
A ministry of service directed to the
care of criminals, the outcast, the exploited, the sick, and the poor may
address all personal karmas of Ari Bhava with great success.

Ari Bhava - Angles to the 12
Domains
Although known as the 'maha-dusth-amsha', Ripu
Bhava is not 'all bad'. Some of the functions of domain-6 are quite
favorable.

-
8th-from-11th (disruption of
goals)
-
12th-from-7th (disagreements)

domain-6 = in identification with illness,
imbalance, animosity, poverty, servitude, exploitation, medicine,
police |
Agents of Domain-6: Servants,
Employees, Enemies, Criminals, Police, Usurers, Physicians and
Victims: the Poor, the Sick, and the Needy
The
primary agents of L-6 are
-
those with whom one is in
conflict (out-of-balance)
-
those who live in a state of
chronic imbalance (poor, sick, self-doubting, or jealous)
-
professionals who serve the
disempowered
Q: What person or object in this
world executes the karmic agenda of domain-6 and its lord? A:
Servants, enemies, money-lenders, physicians, police, and agents
associated with conditions of "animosity, debt, disease"
will carry out the instructions of domain-6 and its lord.
Domain-6 rules argumentation and
disagreement. 1st-from any house gives psychological identity,
material appearance, and vitality.
Domain-6 and its lord indicate the argumentative
behaviors with which the native is most intimately identified. Ari
bhava and L-6 show the phenomena (dharma) of making
arguments and experiencing a resulting condition of
internal imbalance.
Under supervision of mentalized Budha, the nature of blaming
and argument is inherently adversarial. Arguments require opposed
voices, and opposed voices when
personalized with lower emotion can easily become a fight between two
enemies. Ministries of Service, Professional
Service Education Domain-6 is the house of
the doctor and the patient, the police and the criminal, the
money-lenders and the poor. At higher levels of education
in the service professions, logical arguments about the
material causes of animosity, debt, and disease can be free of
jealousy and reactive emotion. Service education, if free of lower
emotions, can lead to effective problem-solving in areas of
social conflict, economic development, and health-care. However note
that education regarding social ills is indicated by 4th-from-9th
which is the all-good dharma bhava! Unfortunately
the baseline behavior of domain-6 is a chronic litany of deep and
repetitive blaming of some purported Other for one's own ills.
Logical debate
pits the 'pro' against the 'con'. Argument-makers can be agents of social
justice (defense attorneys, physicians, ministers and advocates for victims) or
agents of crime and exploitation.
Lord Budha is flexible, neutral, and quick-moving. Typically, the split-minded
psychic environment of Roga Bhava contains both the attachment to imbalance and
the instinct to begin to correct it.
The argument can be largely unconscious and internalized in a
self-identification 'victim script'. Or, the argument can be conscious
and externalized in a professional service
practice.
If conditions in domain-6 are beneficial (ideally, an exalted malefic tenant or
ruler) then the native may serve others with dignity and
compassion.
Should conditions be less supportive, the native may suffer frenetic internal
argumentation which instructs one to serve only oneself. This inner
narrative invokes subconscious memories of scarcity, exploitation, and war. It may claim that
the only way to get power, wealth, or pleasure is to take it from someone else. The native may suffer toxic self-criticism,
expressed as fear and hatred toward others, and diseases caused by jealousy.
Periods of L-6 and tenants of Ripu bhava may show the external effects of the
mental conflict as a body out of balance, bodies in physical conflict, but also
Seva, medicines, and clinical treatments. |

2nd-from-5th
Domain-6 =
Budha -6
Shukra - 2
Surya - 5
|
Domain-5 rules children and creative
genius. 2nd-from any house gives conservation of wealth,
historical and linguistic knowledge, hoards and collections, speech,
face, and family of origin. 2nd-from-5th
gives the children's hoarded wealth, the children's values, the
children's speech and face.
Domain-6 shows the historical values expressed
by one's children, including the nature of their speech, the quality
of their hoards, and their facial features. Idiomatic
language habits cultivated by the children, their language
facility, and the wealth-conserving powers evinced by one's own
creative intelligence. Conservation of
wealth that is generated through speculative, creative, political, or
gaming behaviors. (Gain of profit = 11th-from-5th = domain-3 =
self-made wealth. Ability to conserve the earned profit from
creative endeavors = domain-6.) Wealth
hoarded from literary publications, winning of contests and elections,
publication of games and amusements. The speech qualities expressed by
the native during political campaigns, during theatrical performances,
when talking to or about one's children. (E.g., Barack
Obama, Shukra/Mithuna in domain-6, sweet talk in political
campaigns. Steve Jobs:
L L-2/L-11 Budha/Makara in domain-6, wealth from intelligent
speculation in creative venture.) |
|
3rd-from-4th
Domain-6 =
-
property and vehicle sales
-
skilled crafts and trades
-
service workers in the home
|
Domain-4 rules shelter, protection, owned
property, boundaries, fencing, and cultural 'roots'.
3rd-from any house gives mental process, manual skill, and
communications. 3rd-from-4th
gives communications about boundaries (us-and-them), talk about
protecting property, and meetings with others from one's own same
cultural root.
Mother's siblings and cousins. Parochial assumptions and communications
stimulus-response patterns that were formed in the home culture.
Discussions about property & vehicles. Sales (3rd-from) of property &
vehicles. Animosity and defensiveness inherent in talk about defending
boundaries and protecting cultural roots. Critical
discussions and writings about one's cultural roots, sales,
advertising, and marketing of vehicles and properties (3rd from
bandhu bhava), including all the skilled trades which sustain and
repair buildings and vehicles through either manual or verbal
interaction with the property. Mortgage
brokers, real estate agent, estate management, automobile sales and
maintenance, home construction and repair, sellers of fencing and
protective mechanisms such as alarms and guard systems, human guards,
servants and employees who manually work and verbally talk in the
home. |
|
4th-from-3rd
Domain-6 = stability and security for the
siblings and the team-mates; the work-place |
Domain-3 rules siblings & team-mates,
manual skills, commercial business, and self-made wealth.
4th-from any house gives property, stability, deeds & titles, and
cultural indoctrination. 4th-from-3rd
gives properties of the siblings, licensing and entitlement to perform
commercial duties, education based on manual crafts.
Buildings such as homes and shelters built by one's own hands. Properties
acquired through self-made wealth. Education in hand-crafts. Education provided
to the (younger) siblings. Educational values
which emphasize mental processes, cultural indoctrination in skilled crafts
using hand tools (including writing implements).
Work practices that carry out
cultural "roots" through group discussion, small-group communications,
administrative processes. Ari bhava, the house of logical argumentation, is Budha's natural
home. |
|
5th-from-2nd
Domain-6 = intelligence from the core values,
good luck in expanding the family |
Domain-2 rules hoards of wealth and
knowledge; face, speech, and family of origin. 5th-from any
house gives creativity and intelligence. 5th-from-2nd
gives speculative and risk-positive handling of the accumulated
values, such as savings accounts and collections.
Signifies previous children of the second spouse
(5th-from-2nd, step-children, servants); gambling away the savings
(poverty), or loaning out the savings (usury), or speculative
investment of the hoarded wealth.
Performance art drawing from
historical traditions art, music, and poetry. Domain-6 denizens are
itinerant, un-contracted, ultimately self-governing (9th-from-10th)
and free.
These significations are not always negative.
Results may be positive or negative as the lordship and tenants of Ari
bhava would dictate. Profit from making loans from the saved wealth of
one's family, although risky, if realized, may be wealth-creating.
The
treatment of step-children determines whether they become friends or
enemies. Traveling artists and actors, un-contracted servants such as
roving tinsmiths and fortune-tellers, may enjoy their life quite
nicely. |
|
6th-from-1st
Domain-6 = animosity against the physical body,
imbalance disturbing the body's integrity |
Domain-1 rules the physical body and the
world of material appearance. 6th-from any house gives imbalance
and argumentative disagreement. 6th-from-1st gives inner
disagreement, argumentation, and conflict within the physical body and
a conflicted relationship to the world of appearances.
The native is bereft of appreciation or harmonious relationship to the world of
material appearances. Animosity toward one's own body. Disfigurement,
injury, embarrassing appearance, external evidence of internal imbalance. |
|
7th-from-12th
Domain-6 = alliances among the ancestors |
Domain-12 rules foreign lands, private
affairs, and disintegration of identity. 7th-from any house gives
partnership and terms of agreement. 7th-from-12th gives alliances
in foreign lands, imaginary or fantasized relationships, and relationships with sequestered or confined persons &
environments.
Domain-6 is the house of "import-export"
business, due to its location as 7th (partnerships) from 12th (exotic
lands).
Mental illness
Roga bhava includes mental illness, due partly to signification of imaginary
relationships, belief that one can know what another person is thinking
(delusion, paranoia, jealousy).
Agreements (usually employment contracts)
with Enclosures
Domain-6 defines the contractual or
agreement-based relationship to sanctuaries,
ashrams, hospitals, monasteries, prisons. Strength in domain-6 indicates
that the native will have balanced and beneficial relationships with
these otherwise imprisoning or enclosing environments - e.g., medical,
military, or social service professionals. |
|
8th-from-11th
Domain-6 = secret networks |
Domain-11 rules complex, networked systems
such as the marketplace and large groups of voluntary association.
8th-from any house gives secrecy and sudden changes. 8th-from-11th
gives disruptive change
to networking behaviors, a loss of free association, and
transformation of the pathways toward goals and achievements.
Domain-6 rules jail (external restriction) and
sickness (internal restriction) on free movement in the marketplace of
friends and ideas.
The most difficult implications of Ripu bhava
are indeed this bhava's roles as 6th-from-1st (body imbalance),
8th-from-11th (disruption of free association) and 12th-from-7th
(disagreements) |
|
9th-from-10th
Domain-6 = wisdom of accepting responsibility |
Domain-10 rules lawfully ordered social
organizations such as state governments, and their leaders. 9th-from
any house gives good fortune through philosophical knowledge and
religious belief. 9th-from-10th gives wisdom
and sage guidance about how to operate within conventional,
hierarchical, ruled-ordered groups.
Domain-6 is the house of deepest humility.
It is always the case that the most modest and humble servants of
humanity are its greatest leaders, and that true leadership must be
understood as a ministry of service.
Even if the scope of moral leadership is limited
to one's own family, application of eternal wisdom (such as the Golden
Rule) (9th-from) to the task of governing others (10) will
eliminate most conflicts.
If the native functions successfully within the
moral and legal rule structure of one's own society, one will have few
problems socially (e.g., avoid jail, war, conflicts.)
Empowerment
or victimization
Should domain-6 be fortunate, the native will
serve in one's power-roles (parenting, policing, executive) with
spiritual awareness. Should domain-6 be less auspicious, the absence
of religious understanding may corrupt the native's ability to handle
imbalanced power roles, leading to abuses. |
|
10th-from-9th
Domain-6 = dignity of religion |
Domain-9 rules the divine-human relationship,
holy temples of wisdom, and belief systems. 10th-from any house
gives leadership and public responsibility. 10th-from-9th gives leadership
in religious teaching and promotion of wisdom-temple activities.
When domain-6 is strong, periods of L-6 or graha
in Ari Bhava will emphasize one's responsibility to uphold, direct and
represent organizations such as universities,
houses of worship, and religious training centers. (If Surya or
Guru are involved, the ethical dimension of the responsibilities is
heightened.)
Domain-6 also indicates to some extent the
nature of one's own father's public career responsibilities, and
the nature of the public reputation or dignity of one's own religious
belief system.
Dignity
of one's belief system:
Positive factors in domain-6 suggests that one's
belief system is accepted and upheld in one's own culture, whereas
difficulties in domain-6 may suggest that one's religion suffers
indignities in the land of one's residence. |
|
11th-from-8th
Domain-6 = gain of hidden assets |
Domain-8 rules catastrophic changes and
hidden information. 11th-from any house gives fruits and
gain. 11th-from-8th gives fruits
from possession of secret knowledge.
Marketplace dealings in secret, taboo,
privileged, confidential, unlabeled, mysterious, or polluted,
frightening, or untouchable persons &
things.
Gains - often spectacular - from hidden or confidential
sources. Domain-6 rules medical training which is a gain of secret or
tantric knowledge of proper use of poison as medicine. Domain-6 also
rules crime which is the improper use of hidden knowledge. Nature of
the graha involved will indicate good or bad results. |
|
12th-from-7th
Domain-6 =
dissolution of marriage contract
|
Domain-7 rules alliances and contracts.
12th-from any house gives long journeys away, and breaking apart.
12th-from-7th gives dissolution
and loss of the basis for harmonious agreement.
Loss of marriage agreements, loss of balance,
loss of equity in relationships. Loss of balance in the physical body
= 'dis-ease'.
Handicapped perception which creates inability to locate points of
agreement. Spousal sojourns; the spouse
takes long journeys. Private imagination and fantasies of the
spouse. Imprisonment or hospitalization of the spouse. Losses
from legal decisions, failed lawsuits, losses
from judgment of law courts.
Ari Bhava contains all the relationships in this
world which are 'naturally'
power-imbalanced, including animal-to-human, master-slave,
employer-employee, physician-to-patient, guard-to-prisoner,
dominant-to-subordinate in all situations. |
|
Ari
bhava & L-6 = three classes of people (gana)
-
Healing
Service Professionals who address conflict at spiritual,
social, mental, emotional, and physical levels: ministers,
clinical health workers, social workers, criminal judges &
attorneys, physicians, police, etc. Anyone who deals with
medicine, money-lending, law-breaking, deep disagreements, or
war.
-
Agents
of the disorder: criminals at all levels (includes
warmongering politicians & the criminally insane),
unscrupulous businesspeople, tyrants, abusers of all stripes
-
Victims
of the disorder: Prostitutes (not only sexual but anyone who
must sell their soul), victims, slaves, and the underclass as a
whole.
If the overall karma of the nativity is good,
the nativity showing much engagement with Ari Bhava will have
pure service motives & their professions highly respected.

~~ Madhya Parashari, Ch. 9 , Shloka 6
The 6th from Budha be also considered in regard to indications derivable from Ari Bhava.
~~ Brihat
Parashara Hora Shastra Ch. 7, Shloka 39-43
The 6th house is both for friends & enemies, health
& sickness, attachment & hatred, maternal relatives, cousins, servants
& inferiors.
Its results are full of opposites-sharpness of the opposites is felt according to the influence of the planet, its association, conjunction, or as aspected.
The 6th house protects against enemy, sickness, sorrow
& debt.
~~ Das/Behari
Body
Parts
In the physical body, Ari bhava signifies:
-
digestive system
-
kidneys
-
large intestines
These are the organs
which process the emotion of Fear in the physical body.
Dushthamsha
= Difficult
Ari bhava is considered the most severe
"dusthamsha" or "difficult house" because it is the
natural house of the victim-mind. "Dush" means
"difficult" and "amsha" means portion.
Often when it
comes time to discuss the 6th house in a reading, astrologers stammer a bit
and look at the ground, because matters of the Sat-kona, the sixth angle, are
always difficult to discuss..
Primary significations of Ari Bhava are traditionally, Enemies/Conflict,
Debt/Finance, and Disease/Imbalance. Ari Bhava's portfolio includes subjects
like fear, superstition, illness, enslavement to debt, and people who
instinctively dislike you. These karmic disabilities appear to some
degree in every incarnation, because everyone has a rashi sixth house.
But they are not
very pleasant to talk about!
Pretty much everything that happens in Ari Bhava requires patient, neutral
effort. If there is excessive ego-defensiveness in matters of
this house, there can be big trouble. But with
sufficient compassionate detachment, Ari bhava can produce great saints and
healers.
Ari is a dusthamsha but Ari
is also an upachaya house which improves over time. Slow,
gradual acceptance of the terms of the incarnation will counteract any tendency toward victim mentality or ego-bondage to "becoming your losses".
It's all a matter of neutrality.
BTW, Ripu bhava signifies Fear, but not Anger per se. We can
see active anger in Mars, and suppressed anger in Saturn, but unless these two
marakas influence Ripu bhava there is no natural signification for anger in
the sixth house.
Artha
Money-Maker
Ari bhava is a member of the 2-6-10 Artha
trine (material acquisition, employment, social position).
Wealth can be developed here, through
personal labor, dedicated servitude, ministries to victims, service catering to
the working classes, theft, exploitation, loan-making, medicines,
war, divorce, litigation, various crimes, and other domain-6
behaviors.
Enemies and Fear of Enemies
Everybody's got 'em. Jesus had 'em. Mother
Teresa had 'em. The Dalai
Lama has 'em.
You and I have 'em too.
Enemies occur
when social agreements are imbalanced, when love contracts erode, when internal
arguments burst from the mind and control the manifestation of the inner
narrative. Enemies are people we have harmed in past lives.
Most likely we harmed them inadvertently, out of ignorance - seeking short-term
gain, not thinking of the longer-term spiritual consequences.
But the harm was done, and the action along with its immoral motivation was
recorded for all time in the akashic record. The spirit is responsible for
tidying up this record, converting the ignorance into wisdom, and clearing the
way for our reunion with the divine. A certain amount of negative backlog
is converted to wisdom in each incarnation.
Were you a thief in past lives? Very few of us can
remember. But if you were, and your spirit has determined that this
incarnation is pay-back time, you will be caught for petty infractions that
other people sail through, saddled with debt, and sick from stress. Life
will be a struggle - and why? You might feel like quite the victim.
Traditional Jyotisha offers numerous ritual remedies for purging the evils of
Ari bhava. Being an American, I continue to respect the deities, but I
also prefer empowering solutions such as education, healing, personal
responsibility, creativity, and awareness.
Here
are some practical psychic and emotional suggestions about how to handle
enemies.
"Relieving others of their suffering is
the highest worship of god."
~~ Bhagavata Purana 8.7.44
Good Effects of house-6
Domain-6 surely contains many miseries,
such as marital conflict, poverty, &
disease.
Do any good things happen in domain-6?
The answer is - surprisingly - yes!
House-6 rules finance, loans,
credit. Of course for the common people, debt -
especially inherited debt - can be a terrible curse.
Yet, in capitalistic cultures, debt can
be a good thing. Bankers & financiers of all stripes will have
functional planets in house-6 and also 6th-from-6th,
labha bhava, known as
the house of income.
All the good people whose incomes
depend on giving & managing financial credit, on repossessing defaulted
purchases, mortgaging & foreclosing homes... they all earn out of the
sixth & eleventh houses.
Also the people who treat diseases,
physicians of all cultures, flourish in house-6.
Even attorneys, mediators, marriage
counselors - the famous ones that take the really tough cases - must have strong 6th-house effects to handle the intense conflicts from which
they earn.
As 11th-from-domain-8,
Ripu Bhava gives the fruits of hidden matters. L-8 in domain-6 is
usually very profitable, with gains resulting from confidential
financial arrangements, "private equity", undercover deals, etc.
These arrangements may be legal or illegal (the nature of L-8 will tell)
but for various reasons the transactions remain hidden from public view,
and the profits are often substantial.
So yes, domain-6 gives good effects sometimes.
But those good effects arise from skillful management of the dark side of
human interaction. Professionals with strong domain-6 markers may profit
considerably from handling the negative materials of conflict/imbalance,
hatred/animosity, ignorance/bad choices, exploitation/victimhood, and
illness/debt.
However those same professionals must walk the line between
serving victims and becoming a victim.
L-6 and any occupants of Ripu Bhava must
have dignity to ensure ethical results.
"The internal suffering of the
person who does not reciprocate the criticism and abuse hurled at him burns
down the abuser taking away all the latter's merit. "
~~ Mahabharata Adhiparva
87.7
Domain-6
is a toxic environment.
Anyone who functions in this dangerously
imbalanced domain will be affected by its negativity. Therefore those who
profit from its evils need special awareness, greater sensitivity to the
psychic realities of the victim complex, and higher than average levels of
compassion.
If some well-meaning (?) friend gifts you
with a beautiful gem that happens to be the gem of your 6th lord, donate
that gem to charity in the name of that fine friend :)
Periods
of L-6 = acute conflict, injury, accident, disease; usually a
rapid process; the native remains attached to the body - even in the case
of chronic conditions, the native stays in the body and remains
ego-engaged with the disease-disagreement process
Good
things from bad people
Amusingly, sometimes good things come from bad people. Parashara tells us
that our enemies could make us rich!
"When Dhana's lord is in Ari Bhava along with a benefic, the native will gain
wealth through his
enemies."
~~ BPHS Ch. 24, shloka 18 (satramooladdhana
yoga)
Marital Disharmony
Day-to-day conflict is a part of
normal life for most people. Everyone has a 6th house, so
everyone has to deal with the phenomenon of imbalance
in relationships. Remember the 12th-from-any-house contains the seeds
of that house's destruction. The wheel of birth and death grinds
on.
The 6th house is the 12th-from-7th, so it contains all
the forces that erode 7th house
Marriage and Relationships Balance. Actions of the 6th Lord will trigger
animosity with the spouse, especially the first spouse.
Enemies occur
when social agreements are imbalanced, when love is eroded, when
anger controls.
(Fear-based thinking with the second spouse would be 6th-from-2nd, or the 7th
house itself. Since 7th house is the first spouse, the first spouse can create
lots of stress in your second marriage. You probably didn't need astrology to
know that!)
Debt
As 8th-from-11th,
Ripu bhava profiles the hidden forces that destroy income. Debt is
another yicky 6th-house energy that everyone fears. Imbalance
caused by guilt, grief, and fear, carried over from past lives.
Debt is caused by having exploited others in past lives. It's
carry-over slavery habit, outdated punishment expectation,
antique fear of being judged for not having enough, not being
good enough, or simply being wrong.
Debt and its
causing fears are rooted deep down in the subconscious. It seems
odd that in America, a country founded on hatred of debtor's
prisons, where inherited debt is outlawed, and both personal and
corporate debt-forgiveness through legal bankruptcy very easy to
achieve, that so many people would be tortured by guilt and
despair over debt.
But it's only odd
until you look into those folks subconscious expectations, hear
the self-fulfilling negative prophecies chanted by their
families, and watch their self-defeating choices in the
marketplace... and there you see the manifestations of ancient
humiliations and servitude. Some unfinished karmic business.
Luckily, with
conscious personal responsibility and a profound willingness to
release the matter into the hands of the Almighty, Debt can be
rebalanced. Here
are some psychic and emotional suggestions for handling debt.
import-export/international trade
International business is all
a matter of import-export. Like any business its success depends on
management of debt. A person who intends to succeed in international
business should have strong financial planets in Ari Bhava.
This man has been very
successful at the corporate executive
level of international finance. Note his financially auspicious 9th
and 11th lords in Ari Bhava: L-9 Chandra and the gainful 11th lord Mercury.
Note also the 6th lord exalted 10 houses from swakshetra, exceptionally
auspicious for corporate leadership.
Bankruptcy
11th house rules gains and
income. As 8th-from-11th,
Ari bhava profiles the destruction of gains and income through debt.
With sufficiently beneficial conditions in the 6th house -- such as 6th lord
in the 12th from itself, which gives dissolution of debt -- even a crippling
debt may be resolved through legal bankruptcy.
Randhra bhava - the 8th house
- gives rejuvenation and healing. After bankruptcy is declared all
debts are forgiven or reorganized to become more easily payable. By
admitting one's liability and also seeking justice within the court system,
the root of slavery is destroyed through the turning of the cycle of birth
and death. After bankruptcy comes financial rebirth. Look for
a favorable 8th lord to guarantee complete financial healing.
Note
the access to the privilege of bankruptcy comes with sufficiently high birth
only. In many world cultures inherited debt and ancestral slavery are still
contemporary realities.
If you have experienced the privilege of
bankruptcy you can assume you have earned that privilege through compassionate
actions toward those in debt to you, in past lives. You forgave the debt
of others now your debt is forgiven.
Disease
and How to Fix It
Imbalance. House 6 shows karma which sets health balance at
birth. Illness is a form of bondage to the physical body, which
like enemies and debt is a carry-over from slavery in past
lives.
The root cause of the disease is "inner
argumentation" of which the native may not be conscious. There
is a constant inner narrative which repeats conflict, criticism, jealous
rages, vindictive accusations, and a litany of victimization claims which
eventually program the physical body into a state of chronic imbalance, lack of
trust, and pain.
Bad planets in this "bad" house often
have excellent effects - see Healers Who Handle Toxins
below. Surprisingly, it's "good" planets in the 6th
house that spell "dis-ease." Since "dis+ease"
means "not easy" or "uncomfortable" the good
news is that most disease can be cured through self-knowledge and
sincere desire to be well.
The funny effect of a good
planet here in the house of illness it that it makes the person
not care too much about correcting the imbalance. Jupiter, which
is normally a lovely planet, in house-6 creates excess. If
house-2 which rules the mouth is also out-of-whack, you might see
obesity. Venus, the pleasure planet, in house 6 creates all the
diseases of love - "venereal" diseases.
However, don't panic if you see scary stuff in
your 6th house. Check house-12, which is the release house, for
corrective influences. House-12 gives "dissolution."
Dissolution is not helpful for starting a business but it's very
helpful for getting rid of disease. So check over there in house
12 and see if karmic imbalances in your own health are righted by
your willingness to Let God and Let Go.
Often, sickness is a temporary part of spiritual
growth - it shows the physical body taking a vibrational step
up, doing some internal reworking -- so even if you do see
illness, relax and enjoy. The spirit is magnificent.
Purchase/sales of vehicles
Fourth house profiles vehicles. The 3rd-from-any-house
shows sale, purchase, exchange, conversation about, or negotiations
concerning, matters of that house. So, logically, 3rd-from-4th
which is Ari Bhava, indicates buying and selling of vehicles with all the
negotiation that naturally involves.
Death of friends
Friends are labha
bhava, the 11th rashi house. As 8th-from-11th,
Ari bhava profiles the destruction of friends. Often when a friendship
is destroyed, an enemy is created. Ari is certainly the house of
enemies! When your 6th lord becomes bhukti-pat, be especially
sensitive to triggers which could damage your most important
friendships. With conscious awareness, the destructive implications of
the 6th lord for friendships can be largely avoided.
Sometimes the destruction or recycling of friends includes
their physical death - but for physical death we prefer to first see the
2nd-from and 7th-from a house. Actual death of friends may be more
closely predicted by period of 2nd-from-11th or Vyaya
Bhava.
Wealth of first child
Domain-5 represents the first child. Second house profiles
wealth. Therefore the 2nd-from-5th house, Ripu-sthana, shows the wealth
of the first child/
-
Wealth of 2nd child would be 2nd-from-7th, or
Randhra
bhava.
-
Wealth of 3rd child would be 2nd-from-9th, or
Karmaa
bhava.
-
etc.
Follow this pattern to see wealth of all your children
& grandchildren.
Pets
& Livestock
Relationships to lower caste people, animals & servants
( = employees in the modern
West) is profiled in Domain-6 & 6th-from-Chandra. The domain which lies 6th-from-Moon,
if well-disposed, will show the person having
compassion toward those socially positioned lower than themselves. If
the career setup is right (e.g., L-6 in Domain-10 and Surya in 11)
such a person may succeed in large-scale efforts to eradicate poverty, end
exploitation, or improve animal welfare. Psychologically, people who may be
ego-attached to a victim mentality are also generally speaking highly
sensitive to the feelings of animals.
Venus the love planet when occupying or favorably aspecting
Ripu bhava or 6th-from-Chandra means love of animals so strong that one
takes an animal or servant as a pet - not asking it to perform any work,
simply admiring & indulging the servant or animal as one would a family
member.
Many people in the modern west have strongly affectionate
& intuitive relationships with their pets. Even Odysseus would not
enter heaven unless his faithful dog was allowed to accompany him!
Affliction to Domain-6 shows the ignorant treatment of
those positioned below oneself, particularly animals, or people whose karmic
predicaments make them victims of poverty or disease. Usually the
native receives a 'boomerang' effect of this type of cruelty within their own
lifetime. If not, you can be sure they are storing up plenty of evil
effects for themselves in future lives!
If the 6th house is strong while the 4th & 7th are weak,
the person may prefer the company or animals, employees or servants to the
companionship of human peers.
"You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog
will give you a look that says, 'My God, you're right! I never would've thought of
that!'"
-- Dave Barry
Bad planets in a bad
house usually give good results
In Jyotisha: "Bad planets in a bad
house usually give good results."
Rahu-Ketu, Shani and Kuja - the 'bad boys' of earth's solar system - can give
excellent results in Ari Bhava if they are not encumbered there. However
they will always produce some degree of health concern, according to the sign
and aspects.
Malefic grahas tend to function rather well in
dusthamshas. Malefics
give particularly good results in the uber-dusthamsha, Ari Bhava.
Malefics are not generally harmed by Ripu sthana's environmental toxins.
Rather, they seem to enjoy the challenge. Malefics in a dusthamsha seem
to be saying "no more mister nice guy."
Often malefic planets in domain-6 draw the native into
service of the chronically ill or imbalanced, rather than to be
chronically ill in themselves. Serious malefics in Ari bhava such as Saturn,
Mars, & dusthamsha lords - combined with other virtue-laden graha
- often show "Imbalance professionals" such as public
health workers, clinic doctors & nurses, environmental activists,
hazardous waste managers, debt counselors (including financing debt to poor
countries) and others who work with spiritual,
social, emotional, mental, or physical illness.
However malefics in Ripu bhava do cause illness, according to the nature
of the malefic and the specialties of the rashi.
-
Shani causes
aging, cold and dryness; arthritis, stiffening, brittleness
-
Surya gives biliousness and burning; skin eruptions,
heart disease
-
Mangala brings accidents, breakage, fevers and wounds
-
Rahu gives poisoning, including iatrogenic disease
-
Ketu causes the native to disconnect from medical
treatment, to not seek help
For example, Surya in Ari bhava yuti no other planets,
makes a person somewhat prone to egotistical overheating due to excess pitta (bile).
Eventually they will develop heart disease from the stress of self-assertion
(not necessarily fatal, just a known stress zone.)
However Surya with other malefics such as Kauja, Shani, or
Rahu-Ketu in domain-6, can make
profound digestive sickness if Kuja's anger, or Shani's repression, or Rahu's
drug poisoning amplify the basic ego-overload of Surya.
Benefics in Domains 6,
8 & 12 are inevitably damaged.
Benefics in Domain-6 become
victims of the toxic, imbalanced environment in that evil house. The expected positive effects of
benefics which fall into a dusthamsha are not realized. Depending on the
strength of the benefic, results typically "backfire" - which is
to say that the best motivations give unexpectedly nasty results.
Benefics in a dusthamsha exemplify the old saying, "the road to hell
is paved with good intentions."
-
Shukra gives addictions, sexually transmitted disease,
sugar disease/diabetes
-
Guru brings obesity, excessive feasting, swellings, gout
-
Budha encourages mental illness, worrying, anxiety

Remarks: "According
to Ayurveda, the entire psychological activities of the body are
controlled and brought about by three important forces or basic
factors called thridoshas. They
are Vatha (wind), Pitta (bile) and Sleshma
(phlegm). [BPL note: phlegm factor also called "Kapha"]
-
Pitta is said to
be responsible for metabolic activities. The thridoshas when
excited or disturbed are said to cause diseases. Each dosha
has got its own attributes.
-
For instance, the
attributes of pitta are heat, keenness, lightness, and slight
oiliness. When there is excitement of pitta, the effects
are burning, warmth, suppuration, gangrenous ulcerations, secretions, and
redness of complexion.
-
Where there is Pittavriddhi
(increase of bile) there will be disposition to jaundice,
sleeplessness, and increase of hunger. Pittakshakshayam (decrease
of bile) give rise to colic troubles.
I would refer the reader to
standard works on Ayurveda for greater details. The
Sun's position in the 6th by itself is good. When
the Sun is in the house of diseases, joined and aspected by
malefics, the native's health will not be good and he will
always suffer from one complaint or the other due to excitement or
pitta or bile."

Healers Who Handle Social and Physical Illness
Here are two examples of How Good Service can emerge from Bad Houses:
-
This much-loved low-income clinic worker
has an exalted Shani in Ripu bhava (6).
With
professional excellence, she handles chemical medicines
(poisons), dangerous medical conditions, poverty, alcoholism, drug
abuse, domestic violence, and the full range of 6th-house sorrows . Note her exalted Shani approaches benefic
status by receiving drishti from Guru and lord Shukra in auspicious dharma
bhava.
-
This environmentalist
attorney has L-6 Kuja in yuvati bhava for
Law Courts while malefic L-8/L-9 Shani carries prognosis for professional
success in conflict-management, into Domain-6.

Yoga

Definition:
When
the lord of the 6th is debilitated and the
lord of the 10th is deeply exalted
Jaya Yoga will arise.
Results:
The
native will be happy, victorious over his enemies, successful in all his
ventures and long-lived.
Remarks:
As the
name implies, Jaya Yoga gives success in all undertakings. If the Yoga is
really powerful, the person will hardly meet with failures or
disappointments.
The 6th is a Dusthamsha and when the lord is debilitated,
then all the indications of the sixth house, viz., debts, disease and enemies
will be at a discount so that all the obstructive forces in the way of the
person's prosperity will have been removed.
The lord of the 10th or
house of effort, occupation and deeds will have to be in deep exaltation.
Otherwise, the yoga cannot have its full value.
"...in order
to practice compassion, you should have an enemy."
Real compassion extends to each and every
sentient being, not just to friends or family or those in terrible
situations. To develop the practice of compassion to its fullest
extent, one must practice patience.
Shantideva tells us that if the practice of
patience really moves your mind and brings about a change, you will
begin to see your enemies as the best of friends, even as
spiritual guides.
Enemies provide us some of the best
opportunities to practice patience, tolerance, and compassion.
Shantideva [in "A Guide to the Bodhisattva Way of Life"]
gives us many marvelous examples of this in the form of dialogues
between positive and negative aspects of one's own mind. His
reflections on compassion and patience have been very useful in my
own practice. Read them and your whole soul can be transformed. Here
is an example:
For a practitioner
of love and compassion, an enemy is one of the most important
teachers. Without an enemy you cannot practice tolerance, and
without tolerance you cannot build a sound basis of compassion. So
in order to practice compassion, you should have an enemy.
When you face
your enemy who is going to hurt you, that is the real time to
practice tolerance. Therefore, an enemy is the cause of the
practice of tolerance; tolerance is the effect or result of an
enemy. So those are cause and effect.
As is said, "Once something has the
relationship of arising from that thing, one cannot consider that
thing from which it arises as a harmer; rather it assists the
production of the effect."

I have simply stopped arguing with
reality.
How do I know the wind should blow? It's
blowing.
How do I know this is the highest order?
It's happening.
Arguing with 'what is' is like teaching a
cat to bark. It's not very fulfilling.
I am my friend and no longer
confused.
The way I know that reality is good is
that, when I argue the point, I experience tension, fear and frustration. I
lose - not sometimes, but 100% of the time. It just doesn't feel natural
inside: no balance, no connection.
I want reality to change? Hopeless.
Let me change my thinking.
Some of us mentally argue with 'what is.'
Others of us attempt to control and change 'what is,' and then tell
ourselves and others that we actually had something to do with any apparent
change that took place.
This leaves no connection or room for God
in my life. In the peaceful experience of no opposition to God, I remain
aware of my nature: clear, vibrant, a friend, a listener.

I want you. I shall find you. I shall take you to bed & have my way
with you. I will make you ache, shake & sweat till you moan & groan. I
will make you beg for mercy. I will exhaust you & leave you weak for days.
All my love... THE FLU.
"Dr. Cutler:
"...one of the reasons I
brought up the topic of challenge at work," I said to the Dalai Lama,
"is because it relates to a concept that seems to come up frequently these
days in psychological literature, the concept of flow.*
This concept is increasingly
mentioned in articles on human happiness, and this state can commonly occur at
work.... while engaged in activity, there's a feeling of effortlessness, a sense
of total control over what one is doing....
Although flow can occur in any
activity, some investigators have found that Americans experience more flow at
work than they do in their leisure time."
The Dalai Lama:
"You really like this flow,
Howard!" the Dalai Lama exclaimed with an amused chuckle. "...no
matter how nice that state may be, I don't think it is the most important source
of satisfaction, fulfillment, or happiness....
For one thing, you can't be in
that state at all times.... So through this flow, even if you get some
temporary kind of happiness, it will not be an ongoing thing.
I think this flow state is not
reliable or sustainable, and I think it's much more important to develop other
sources of satisfaction through one's work that are brought about by training
one's mind, shaping one's outlook and attitude, integrating basic human values
in the workplace.
For example, dealing with
one's destructive emotions while at work, reducing anger, jealousy, greed, and
so on, and practicing relating to others with kindness, compassion, tolerance,
these are much more important and stable sources of satisfaction than simply
trying to create flow as much as possible."
Dr. Cutler: ...
To the Dalai Lama, true
happiness is associated with a sense of meaning, and arises on the basis of
deliberately cultivating certain attitudes and outlooks.
True happiness may take longer
to generate, and requires some effort, but it is this lasting happiness that can
sustain us even under the most trying conditions of everyday life."
* flow is defined here as
[people] being so completely absorbed in their work that they lose track of
time.
