Death Soul's choice to separate from the shell of the physical body IMO, some of the most accessible, compassionate, and practical instructions for managing the transition of self and others are found in the Tibetan Book of Living & Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche/Andrew Harvey.  Harvey is one of the best writers in the English language. The instructions are traditional regarding the psychological stages of experience during the passage, but the recommendations for managing these stages are entirely modern.
