Q.:
Namaste! ... I have Rahu conjuncting Venus. Could you direct me where I might find a few paragraphs written what this generally brings into one’s life, or say a few words about it?
I’d deeply appreciate it. Venus rules my 8th. My chart showed a “wounded healer” with Rahu/Jupiter in the 8th, Jupiter lord of the 1st.
A:
Yes, an interesting situation! Gochara Rahu-Ketu transits through each rashi-pair axis have approximately 18 months duration.
Transiting Rahu-Ketu entered the Makara-Karkata axis on approx. 30-April-2008.
The Rahu-Ketu transit table shows that Rahu will continue to move progressively "backwards" through Makara until 16-Nov-2009.
En route, during these 18 months, gochara Rahu will contact several important points in your nativity:
radix Shukra = L-3/L-8 (a difficult graha in general)
radix Mangala = uccha L-2/L-9 and profitably placed in domain-11
navamsha lagna = Makara
navamsha Chandra = Karkata (contacted by gochara Ketu)
dashamsha natal Rahu-Ketu axis with D-10 Budha = "nodal return" to Dashamsha plus Ketu contacts Budha
Rahu's effect on Shukra cannot be completely isolated from Rahu's simultaneous effects on the other contact points. So, we will need to look closely at these five contact points plus the limiting effects of current Shani bhukti, in order to make the most accurate possible prediction.
Rahu/Shani period:
Since the power of planetary transits depends significantly upon the current Vimshottari period, it is essential to note that you are currently in Rahu/Shani period.
All of Rahu's transits to all points in the nativity have extra impact during Rahu mahadasha.
The peak impact of Rahu transit to Shukra would theoretically occur if either Rahu/Rahu period or Rahu/Shukra period was ongoing during Rahu's transit to Shukra. It can be seen from the Vimshottari dasha timeline to the right that this peak event won't happen during the Rahu mahadasha. (Whew!)
However, Rahu gets plenty of extra entitlement by being the current mahadasha pati, and Shukra as L-3/L-8 is definitely a trouble-maker.
Let's see what impact can be expected.
Rahu transit to radix Shukra = L-3/L-8 in domain-11 :
Rahu's job is to excavate long-buried desires from the bottom of the subconscious mind, and catapult those desires right to the surface of consciousness. Rahu is fast, intense, and sudden.
Shukra's job is to develop the five-senses perceptions into the highest permitted sensual pleasures. Shukra does this task in a grounded and productive way, when Shukra occupies a rashi of Shukra or a rashi of Shani. (In Meena, where Shukra is exalted, the perceptions move out of the physical body and into the realm of art & music).
Shukra's natural tastes
Shukra's sense of beauty in Makara rashi = calm & controlled. Shukra likes good structure, old valuable beautiful things such as antiques and museum pieces, strong bones, orderly processes, large organizations with established traditions, reliable rules and standards, public decency, and cultures which support work ethics.
Shukra in Makara is romantic but realistic. Natives favor a single marriage per lifetime, starting with a proper elaborate ceremony. They prefer to keep to the middle path in their lives -- as much as the other graha will allow! Natives with Shukra in Makara tend to be very attractive physically due to their excellent bone structure.
Your Shukra occupies the nakshatra of Dhanishtha, which rules the drumbeat-conga-line of spirits dancing up to the top of Mount Meru. (Dhanishtha/Sravishtha represents social climbing in general.) Dhanishtha is famous for wealth and status acquisition. Shukra is Dhanishtha makes an excellent dancer!
In domain-11, Shukra is sociable. Shukra likes to participate in community-building, large gatherings, and economic development of large groups in the marketplace. However Shukra can be sociable in pursuit of sensual pleasure that it craves.
Das says of Shukra/Makara/domain-11, "Venus will excite lascivious tendencies. You will be sociable in order to have your appetites satisfied. Though you are amiable & will be liked by your friends & associates, your covetousness will be so pronounced that you may seduce your friends' spouses and have affairs with older or divorced partners."
Shukra has high entitlement, minimal constraints
Since Shukra receives no Parashari drishti in radix, no other graha is much inhibiting Shukra's pleasure-seeking tendencies. Furthermore Shukra obtains a higher degree in Makara than Shukra's radix co-tenant Mangala.
Therefore Shukra has permission to operate without constraint in doing all the things that Shukra likes to do: build communities, enjoy being liked esp. by traditional or conventional types of friends, participate in profit-making business, and prefer the company of older people including older romantic partners.
When Rahu the amplifier, magnifier, and inflamer comes around to Shukra's house, once every 18 years, the senses are infused with desire from ancient lifetimes.
Love and romance in particular will be the featured desires, due to Shukra's core taste for balanced and deeply sensual partnerships. However some hunger for social approval per se (Makara) through undertaking community activities (nice social activities like parties) will also arise.
Shani bhukti reduces Rahu's effect
Since Shani rules the current bhukti and Shani Himself is not receiving a transit of gochara Rahu-Ketu, the effect of Rahu's inflaming passions upon Shukra would normally not be too much exaggerated. Rahu would not be amplifying Shukra at full magnitude unless it were also right now your Shukra bhukti.
Das describes the transit of Rahu upon natal Shukra (in any rashi) as, "A cooling down influence in love and romance. It is a disturbing one but has a stabilizing influence. Avoid emotional affairs. Some sober and harmonious relation may develop making you happy, and will bring prosperity on material side. Control overindulgence. A marriage now will be lucky for love and finances. A good business, stable income if not in abundance. So take good care of your money, avoid spending on pleasures. Avoid over enthusiasm."
However the general transit effects do not take into account the particulars of your navamsha. The fact that Rahu is simultaneously transiting your navamsha lagna and evoking the navamsha Moon changes the "cooling down" effect into an evocation of deep emotional need for human connection.
Rahu-Ketu transiting navamsha
An additional and Shani-counteracting force that increases the intensity of desire for love, romance, and companionship = gochara Rahu-Ketu's stimulating movement across:
navamsha lagna = Makara
navamsha Chandra = Karkata (contacted by gochara Ketu)
Rahu's transit through Makara rashi increases the native's desire for formal methods and hierarchical structures in life. One enjoys the feeling of a lawful and orderly assembly, practicing its cultural lifestyle according to socially established values. Material wealth is an important element of the stability and reliability of the practice community. Preferred romantic and business partners will display qualities of regular habit, age, discretion, and "common sense".
Swamsha
Since "swamsha", i.e. the rashi upon the navamsha lagna, indicates the soul's higher calling, the native feels during Rahu's transit across the navamsha lagna that the True Self is waking up, into a state of hunger for truth. The native feels excited and ready to take a risk to obtain that for which the Soul hungers.
Conflicting interior narratives, evoked though love or business partnership
When Makara occupies the navamsha lagna, the Soul responds most authentically to the path of Shani. In this nativity, radix Shani is dignified in the 10th house of public leadership & willing acceptance of bureaucratic responsibilities; navamsha Shani is neechha and entrapped with Shani's enemy Kuja, although in a dignified, educational house.
Rahu's transit to Makara stimulates both a rational willingness to work hard in leadership roles to create a better society (D-1 Shani), and also a deep personal resistance to social cooperation or conformity based on repressed anger toward the mother or even ethnic hatred (D-9 Shani).
The contradiction between these two Shani position rises to the surface through interactions with attractive partners, both romantic and business interests, who mirror the native's inner struggle to coordinate one's rational commitment to world betterment (Shani/Dhanau/10) with a deep personal resentment again enemies from the past.
Spiritual attraction
Rahu stimulates spiritual partnership (navamsha) when Rahu crosses the D-9 lagna. In evoking a partner from one's subconscious web of past-life connections, Rahu has a particular purpose in mind. Rahu's purpose is to make the attraction strong enough to cause the native to invest one's own identity into the partnership.
Once invested, the behavior of the spouse/partner becomes personal, and one pays close attention to the action-reaction pattern of the relationship dynamic. Through responding to the self-mirroring actions of the spouse-partner (who may indeed be a sexual partner, a business co-owner, or one's most intimately personal ishtadevata) the native advances along one's spiritual path.
Rahu transit navamsha lagna = hunger for Self-knowledge
When Rahu crosses the navamsha lagna, Rahu's desires fuel the active pursuit of self-knowledge which can only be obtained through the mirroring function of partnership. When considered in combination with gochara Rahu's effect upon natal Shukra, the intensity of romantic desire for a person or ideal may be predicted to increase. Because Shukra's job is to operate the sensual pleasure machinery of the physical body, chances are quite good that Rahu will evoke an explicitly physical attraction.
Ketu transit through 7th navamsha & navamsha Moon
However it is important to note that Ketu must simultaneously transit the 7th navamsha (which represents the spouse/partner) causing the native to need to be in pursuit which the partner is somewhat elusive. And also navamsha Chandra, in the very beneficial rashi of Karkata, will feel the distancing and apathetic (ideally also meditative) effect of gochara Ketu.
The spouse/partner may be a lovely & nurturing person, but their mood during Ketu transit may be more withdrawn or other-worldly than normal. The native's passions will be higher than the passions of the object of one's desires.
Rahu's stimulating effect on natal Mars
Kuja occupies the excellent rashi of Makara where He is exalted, and furthermore Kuja gives excellent results in commerce throughout the marketplace when He occupies domain-11. The native has sharp business skills. Rahu increases the native's hunger to develop his own scope of business activities.
Profitability becomes a passion.
While technically Rahu will contact Kuja only in the second half of the Rahu-Ketu transit through Makara-Karka, indeed the early rising of desire for wealth and material achievement can be felt as soon as Rahu crosses the threshold into rashi of Makara. The native is energized physically, full of male excitement and competitive thrust. Business ventures embrace risk, and are in general highly successful bringing much pleasure and reward. There is abundant energy available to work hard and play hard.
Shani slows it down
Not to over-inflate Rahu's effects however: keep in mind that a Shani bhukti is in force. While Shani is a beneficent lord of the gainful domain-11 where all this excitement is taking place, Shani's own personality is slow and sober. Shani bhukti is always a time of retardation, frustration with slowness, and unaccountable delays.
During Shani periods, everything takes twice as long to finish as one expected. The best-laid plans must be re-laid due to difficult, late-discovery details. Yet, if Shani is well-placed as Shanaicharya is in this nativity, results of domain-11 including gainfulness in the marketplace and strong community development will be forthcoming indeed.
In sum the business instincts get all fired up by Rahu. While Shani tones down the most hormonal expressions of Mars' masculine driving enthusiasm to conquer and control, Kuja's gainfulness which is already strong is much amplified by achievement-hungry Rahu..
Rahu + Venus + Mars = sexual intensity
Sexually and romantically, within the 18 month span of Rahu-Ketu's transit through Makara-Karkata, both the female sexual-love energies of Shukra and the male sexual-competition energies of Kuja are being aroused by the ancient, unfinished-business attractions evoked by Rahu.
The senses are operating on high power.
The hungers of the senses can be channeled into religious devotion if the native so chooses. However the native would need to have a rigorous religious practice or remarkable self-knowledge in order to maintain control over the animal body's tendency to signal the brain that it wants human touch, and soon.
Career Changes from Dashamsha
dashamsha natal Rahu-Ketu axis with D-10 Budha = "nodal return" to Dashamsha
plus Ketu contacts Budha
A once-every-18-years "Rahu-Ketu Return" to the dashamsha is also occurring along with the above transits to radix and navamsha. In the D-10 - a special "varga" or divisional chart concerned with public service, leadership responsibilities, reputation, and "career", Rahu brings a strong desire for change, risk, and the excitement of new experiences, into the Dashamsha 8th house.
The dashamsha offers an astral pattern which does not in itself predict events, but planetary movement within the dashamsha should reinforce the astrologer's perception of impact upon the more material levels of reality seen in the radix.
The most true effect of Rahu Return to the D-10 will probably be that the native experiences a desire to rather suddenly change one's line of work, to engage specifically in healing, tantric, surgical, transformative, or other healing practices, and that the native's style of embarking into a new area of professional practice will be measured, conservative, and stable (Makara style!).
The dashamsha signal confirms the effect of Rahu stimulating Shukra as L-3 for business administration.
L-3 controls all the daily repeating communications of business, e.g. sales, marketing, advertising, public relations, meetings, correspondence, calendars etc. Your business instincts are strong at birth and Rahu's desire to engage in commerce when He transits domain-11 really wakes up the L-3 job of Shukra!
The dashamsha transit also confirms the effect of Rahu stimulating Shukra as L-8, lord of Secret Healing.
Matters of L-8 are inherently hidden and confidential, including all forms of interactive therapy (not including meditation which is entirely private in domain-12). Shukra as L-8 brings tantric teachings, access to private or confidential sources of financial funding, inheritances and legacies, and transformation through forced and sudden change (including the circumstances of death). L-8 controls emergencies of every kind, from disasters to delights.
Rahu comes by and gives the cycle of birth and death a big, fierce, hard spin! The result is the excitement of risk regarding entry into a healing enterprise. We know that your career path is energized by matters of domain-8 not only because Rahu is transiting the L-8 Shukra but also because Rahu transiting domain-8 in the career varga, dashamsha.
Detachment from urgency of Money
Gochara Ketu's effect of D-10 Budha is in general an experience of detachment toward public opinion, and lack of anxiety about the power of the new career direction to generate wealth in the very short term.
Budha gives the effect of Chandra/Ketu in radix, which means that while one generally has plenty of money (from Chandra being L-5 in domain-2) one remains significantly mentally and emotionally detached from one's accumulations.
By not being overly worried about making money right at the outset of a new career direction (in healing, probably some form of complimentary or allied-to-allopathy natural style of medical healing), the native can act more vigorously upon Rahu's desire to try something new and tantric (i.e., a bit magical, involving some esoteric information).
Shani, again
Never to forget Shani bhukti however! Shani will keep the primary effects of domain-11 (assembly, marketplace, friendships, gainfulness) and domain-12 (sanctuary, healing spa, meditation, imagination, privacy, enclosure) on the front burner. And Shani will slow everything down, with plenty of repetition and resistance to change. Shani the bhukti-pati and Rahu the transit agent are mortal enemies.
Having a major Rahu transit during a Shani bhukti is a much more tame experience than having a major Rahu transit during a Rahu bhukti! But still, there is plenty of potential in this nativity for love, romance, community development/networking, business growth and profitability, and starting out in a deeply satisfying new career direction.
Short-term Intensifiers
During the remainder of Rahu-Ketu gochara through Makara-Karkata:
Watch for pratya-antar-dasha or "sub-sub" periods of Shukra, or Rahu, for intensification of the romantic/aesthetic desires. (usually only one or two months duration).
Watch for transits of Shukra into Makara or Karkata (about one month duration each) for intensification of Rahu-Shukra effects
Marriage prospects:
During one of these intensifiers, your prospect for marriage becomes exceptionally strong. Because Shani is lord of D-9, Shani periods are marriage-makers.
The other basic requirement for a marriage period is that Rahu-Ketu should transit across some significant lagna, such as Chandra lagna or navamsha lagna. That is also happening during the next 18 mos.
Therefore Rahu's amplifying effect on Shukra the love graha, during the occurrence of the two main marriage factors, would suggest the imminence of marriage or a very intense love affair. Indeed this relationship can be non-physical for the committed brahmacharya -- but the default is physical love.
