"Desire for Extraordinary
Personal Identity"
-
Passionate Desire to challenge conventional boundaries of
personal identity, rank, social positioning
-
Hunger to Possess unique identity through
special entitlements.
-
Magnetically Attracted to displays of physical
glamour, political power, and social notoriety
This person really wants to be special!
May have been deprived of the mother's attention in childhood. Lifelong
craving for validation and
recognition of the exotic, unusually powerful, or
extraordinary qualities in one's body image and one's social
personality.
Rahu disrupts the customary methods of individual
boundary marking and
body-identity development.
Rahu destroys customary moral boundaries in the structure of the personality.
One pursues each arising desire with intensity and passion. Utterly
self-focused. Little sense of the impact of one's actions upon others.
There is plenty of "pathy" but very little
"empathy".
Due to the intensity of Rahu's craving to
possess a person, an experience, or an empowerment, Rahu blunts the
humane "sharing" sensibilities. The native with Rahu in lagna, particularly if
Rahu is joined with a malefic, will struggle to comprehend the feelings
of others. Rahu destabilizes compassion and replaces humane empathy with
reactive reptilian desire.
All graha gain dignity in lagna, and Rahu is no
exception. The native with Rahu in lagna is an extraordinary person who stands out from the crowd.
The native is socially identified with foreign
interests, the revolutionary
underclass, mysterious or taboo behaviors, or a threat to order implied in
catastrophic social changes.
Total result depends
entirely on Rahu's lord and any grahas which may co-occupy the lagna.
Rahu in lagna does
not give Shukra's fair and balanced beauty. Rather, Rahu confers a dark
and smoky
yet charismatic aura. The native is psychically hungry for empowerments
of every variety. One may be loved, or feared; admired or
despised; to Rahu it does not matter the means - so long as the end is
validation of personal power.
One seeks recognition and achievement, and is
obsessively hungry for material-physical-sensual experience. A karaka
for promiscuity. Ketu will occupy domain-7 therefore the spouse
is unsuitable and the native is profoundly detached or indifferent
toward the marital alliance. Divorce is not implied, as apathy toward
marriage is too strong to encourage any solution to the problem. The
native pursues each desire as it arises. One is concerned only to
attract validation for the personality, get attention, and empower the
physical body. Should Shani influence Rahu, expect more self-deprivation
and self-restraint according to social mores, but the apathy toward
marriage alliance remains profound.
Native has an unusual individual identity.
Craving to advance one's social position far beyond the rank into which
one was born. A bit of a poseur, who may downplay one's common
upbringing, attempting to appear more exotic.
One is strangely attractive; and prone to take
risks in
one's life (usually in order to gain attention or power).
-
If Shani is associated with Rahu in lagna, these are
calculated risks
with scarce resources, reduced by conservative fears;
-
if Kuja is associated with Rahu in lagna, prone to adventure with
physical risk; accidents;
-
if Chandra is associated with Rahu in lagna, prone to dramatic relationships with
psycho-emotional risk
-
if Shukra is associated with Rahu in lagna,
Often the mark of high performance in the area of life controlled
by Rahu's lord, due to ambitious risk-taking. (However if Rahu's lord
= neechha,
Rahu amplifies neechha qualities which can lead those risks to
fail.)
In psychic terms: if Rahu + malefics, the
birth personality is conflicted. The birth itself is challenged. Native must struggle to enforce their right to
life. Native 'sneaks in' to the conception in a surreptitious act:
stealing their drop of amrita!
Das / Behari: says:
... You make a great strides in life. Gains honor, wealth
and favor through religious, educational and scientific achievements.
Dominating personality; promising self-expression.
Gain and happiness through own
initiative. Slow to pick up new ideas. Averse to formal education. Conqueror of enemies.
You make the glory and influence of other people an instrument of your own
success.
You can effectively utilize your own powers and wealth for yourself
and others. Not being satisfied with your own spouse, you may wander.
Gains competence with the help of friends with effective grace. You are
always ready for work. You may have two marriages, and a charming spouse. Quick to hold discussion. Lots of trouble
and suffering. Bad qualities may surround you on many sides.

"Desire to Acquire"
-
Desire to penetrate the conventional boundaries
protecting Stored Cultural Values and "classic" Knowledge
Traditions.
-
Hunger to Possess histories, wealth
collections, and classical languages
-
Magnetically attracted to banks, accounts, collections
of valuable books, art, music, language materials, all hoards of knowledge
and
accumulated wealth.
Rahu disrupts
the customary methods of mental tasking
and group communications.
As the great taboo-breaker, Rahu destroys
customary moral boundaries and behavioral consistency in the
family of origin; in the hoarding and collecting process;
in the historical knowledge, language, opinions, speech and
song.
The native may be a vigorously disruptive
speaker/singer expressing the 'voice of the dispossessed' (King,
Limbaugh, Cash)
Rahu casts an exotic, exciting, sensually hungry,boundary-disrupting drishti
upon:
-
domain-6 (medicine/servants/mother's
relatives),
-
domain-8 (secrets/emergencies/inheritance)
-
domain-10 (leadership/reputation/public icon)
Rahu's influence upon any dusthamsha is helpful in breaking up tough karmic resistance.
Rahu encourages risk, to the point of recklessness, yet Rahu can be a
powerful helper in breaking up "stuck" karmic patterns.
Rahu disrupts
the customary methods of values acquisition. The native hungers
for many types of knowledge, and is unable to maintain a sustained focus
on a single type for long enough to build a hoard of wealth or
expertise.
The accumulative processes, including money savings, are erratic
and unpredictable along a roller-coaster pattern.
Periods of Rahu are fiercely acquisitive, albeit the wealth source may
be a taboo-breaker. If Rahu's lord is favorable,
Rahu in domain-2 may signify great wealth acquired through personal risk
or exotic association. Wealth may take the form of money, or
knowledge, or both.
Typically the native will desire
to acquire not only money, but also a comprehensive knowledge
of history -- especially knowledge of the traditions of one's blood
lineage. One hungers to know languages, esp. the most
valuable languages e.g. the ancient and sacred tongues.
Rahu wishes to possess knowledge and material collections of art,
music, jewels, money, and all beautiful and luxurious
things (Shukra's house).
However Rahu's rampant desires are not satisfied
with a single collection. The more Rahu learns, the more Rahu acquires,
the more He craves the experience of acquiring further foods, monies,
jewels, art, music, books, and other containers of sustaining knowledge.
One acquired, the materials lose their fascination, and Rahu's hunger
moves to new, related values.
The general range of collection types will be
known according to Rahu's lord and Rahu's co-tenants.
The native can become quite wealthy according to Rahu's
lord and co-tenants. Although the acquisitional behaviors can be erratic
according to Rahu's changing desires, Rahu with any of the money lords
(L-1, L-2, L-3, L-5, L-9, L-11) is hungry for accumulations.
Although Rahu
+ Shani in domain-2 is a dysfunctional yoga ( = acquisitive desires
in battle with fearful restraint) if Shani = an auspicious house lord,
this yoga will provide steadier hoarding patterns with the wisdom of
age.
From domain-2, Rahu casts drishti
upon domain-6, 8, and 10. Knowledge-values collection includes
exotic medicine (6), esoteric histories (8), and symbolic
representations (10).
Rahu in domain-2: Family of Origin
Unstable family environment. The family of origin struggles with
changing social-historical values. Often, the inherited
moral and aesthetic values of the family of origin are challenged by
large-scale, environmental upheaval in social values. The ancient
Chinese curse, "May you live in interesting times" applies to
Rahu in dhana bhava. The native will realize that the lineage
path of the ancestors cannot be unquestioningly followed.
Experimentation with exotic or forbidden values lends a fundamental
instability to the native's family life.
Rahu periods
may produce dramatic taboo behaviors such as death, and bringing outsiders
into the family.
When Rahu occupies death house-2, and Rahu occupies
an unfavorable angle from the mahadasha pati, Rahu periods can give powerful
maraka effects including sudden deaths within the family.
Rahu in domain-2: Marriages
Karaka for two marriages.
Rahu in 8th-from-7th:
The first spouse will be prone to sudden emergencies
and "suffer from complex ailments which are difficult to
diagnose" [Behari's description of Rahu in domain-8]. First spouse has a hunger for secret, privileged
information (8) and hidden financial operations [8].
Ketu occupies domain-8 from lagna = conventional marital project of acquiring joint assets
and establishing a reserve of shared values = distant, disaffected, or
detached.
Due partly to frustration with the secret-hiding
behaviors in the first marriage, the native may desire to
explore a second marriage. However the second marriage may be even more
problematic since Rahu directly governs the social personality of the
second spouse.
The second spouse will exhibit a remarkable hunger
for acquisition of money and knowledge. This person feels
that the common boundaries do not apply to his/her wealth entitlements. Rahu's
"usurper" 'role in the house of lineage speech, song, and
values suggests that the second spouse is perhaps
(See myth of Rahu-Ketu, Rahu's illicit sip of
Amrita).
Excessive disregard of the common law will not be
socially tolerated. If spouse-2 has experienced censure, this one may
have an "outsider" complex based on desire-driven pretense to
special privilege. The total nativity must be considered before making a
final prediction, but generally when Rahu occupies domain-2, the second
spouse has "outlaw" characteristics which flaunt the public
values of discretion and taste.
(However spouse-2 may also have money, education,
social rank etc. according to L-2 and any graha cohabiting Dhana bhava
with Lord Rahu.)
Unusual or extreme expression of cultural values. Values
are deeply influenced by foreign cultures and the native eats the foods
of foreign lands.
High permission to enjoy amplify the activities of
the face and mouth. Attractive hair. High
entitlement to eat and drink, speak and sing, as they
please! Gives an intriguing, attractive, slightly exotic face.
Even very wealthy nativities will
identify socially with the underclass or with a foreign culture. May be
fluent in more than one cultural tradition, always hungry to sample more
history, tradition, and value systems.
The native is plagued by unstable emotions
throughout life, due to the childhood shocks and sudden changes. One
expects dramatic interruptions of the family routine and indeed this
pattern recurs with each Rahu period, when a fascinating new person or
power needs to be integrated into one's family.
From domain-2, Rahu casts drishti upon domains 6,
8, and 10.
Depending on the occupants of those houses, the
general prognosis is for magnification of values conflict or poverty
involving foreigners, increased healing ability and access to
confidential information (again involving underclass or foreigners) and
in regard to domain-10, a career influenced by ability to interact with
foreign cultural systems. The native will travel internationally in
professional service
Das / Behari: says:
... may cause you to stammer, become separated from your near
and dear ones, and cause poverty. You become a purveyor of fish, flesh, skins, nails,
and products which require a coarse heart and mind to work with.
Humility will characterize your behavior. Promotes prosperity; gain
through legacy and inheritance; science and learning. Success through property, employment
and business. Amicable and profitable business alliances. Poor, sick; trouble through son.
Dark-complexioned. A liar, fearless, a treasurer.
Sees the destruction of the relatives. Influenced by the wicked.
With all your wealth, you may live in
poverty.
Strife and discord with the relatives prompts you to
conceal the truth. Fear of weapons and enemies. Dependent but receives severe punishment due to scoundrels. Selfish; unhappy
and unemployed in the birth place. You may become wealthy in foreign lands.
Much opposition. Hard struggle to gain any success. Speech defect; suffers from nose
and throat problems. Gain and happiness through government favor. You may become a thief;
proud; very unfortunate.
Wealth through trade in fish; lives with the lowly people. Averse to friendly
advice. Harsh; loss of wealth; poverty and wandering. Talks too much unpleasant, offensive, disagreeable. Gain through leather goods
and stolen property. Teeth irregularly set; dexterous. Cattle wealth.

"Desire to Deliver a
Message"
-
Desire to penetrate and upset the conventional integrity of
daily Business-as-usual commerce and scripted Communication Patterns
(disrupts habitual thoughts!)
-
Hunger to Possess the thoughts of others
through special psychic-communication entitlements
-
Attracted to taboo topics of conversation and
invasively interactive
mental process
-
Will tell you what you *really* want to
know!
As the great taboo-breaker, Rahu destroys
customary moral boundaries and behavioral consistency in the
sibling group; in
the communication processes; in the self-made wealth..
Rahu disrupts
the customary methods of mental tasking and
group communications.
Disruptive, exciting, sensually hungry drishti
to
-
domain-7 (marriage/partners/agreements),
-
domain-9 (father /guru/ceremonial religion)
-
domain-11 (friends/income/goals)
Peculiarly intense and penetrating method of
communicating with others. May be an excellent writer if L-5 and Budha
are strong. Strange ideas. Challenges the conventional cultural
styles of information management. Disrupts meetings, the information
flow of work-group, team, or business department. A rather peculiar
person to have in the office.
Great hunger to talk with foreigners and take
short trips to foreign lands.
Can fabricate false stories for instrumental
purposes, but is also a great short-story writer. Whether this mental
attraction to extremes in storytelling is beneficial will depend on
Rahu's lord.
Too exotic mentally for success in parochial business, but may succeed
in international commerce.
Mental health
Disruption to the conventional flow of daily
thoughts. Invades the boundaries of others' thoughts. The inner
personal narrative may be surging with hungry desire for sensual
experience.
If Budha is involved with Rahu, the mental flow of daily thoughts and
voices from past
and present which rings in the heads of all humans, is a wild and
exciting inner debate.
(Younger) Siblings
The immediate younger sibling is odd
or has strong foreign interests. Communication flow with the siblings is
intense, peculiar, disrespectful of boundaries, challenging to personal
integrity. If Rahu = yuti malefics, the sibling's
mental health may be an issue. Karaka for twin birth.
Das / Behari: says:
... causes trouble to siblings, but otherwise helpful in enabling you to acquire material conveniences. You secure physical comforts, wealth, children,
and a good spouse; you have many friends and may acquire expensive
cars.
This Rahu does not bode well for the birth of
children. You are sharp, inclined to spiritualism or higher educational disciplines. Good fortune
and success through affectionate dealings, neighbors, journeys, writing or publishing.
Denotes bravery, courage, industry, fortune, wealth, state honor, health; with many friends;
travel, annihilator of the enemy. Agricultural wealth. Matchless in prowess. Strong, treats all as brethren. Fortunate. You are most
lucky &d extend friendship to all.
Least actively benevolent; toughest in most difficult work. Sleepless nights for the enemy; renowned;
lives in luxury; trouble for brothers; wretched; affluent; valiant. Artless; state authority; charitable; proud; firm minded; long living.
Rahu, in the third house, will make his brothers prosperous.

"Desire for Transformation
of the Homeland"
-
Desire to challenge conventional boundaries of
social security and cultural indoctrination
-
Desire to Possess cultural roots through
special entitlements
-
Attracted to schools, vehicles, lands and titled properties
As the great taboo-breaker, Rahu destroys
customary moral accountability and behavioral consistency in the
parents; in the childhood home; in property ownership,
and in education.
Rahu disrupts
the customary methods of defining
property and
imposing cultural indoctrination.
Associated with Land Reform movements and with
patriotic cultural revolutions, "the loyal opposition". The
native uses one's education toward taboo-challenging purposes.
Outsiders who are present in the childhood home create a peculiar
and unstable or highly diverse upbringing, in which the natural
repetition o familiar habits and customs is disrupted (e.g., foreign
education) and child is not entirely secure.
The parents might abandon their own cultural roots
e.g. the parents might change their religious affiliation so that the
childhood home has a different culture than other homes in the extended
family network, or perhaps the parents adopt a new ethnicity,
nationality, or set of customs.
One may
be perceived by others as a foreigner or somehow not quite properly or
regularly culturally
aligned. There may be a presence of foreign tradesmen, tutors, or dignitaries
or other exotic cultural influences in the childhood home.
The native may receive indoctrination amongst the underclass or in an
exotic, ritually proscribed land. Unusual process of basic
socialization and cultural education. May reject conventional education,
preferring to carve a taboo-challenging path toward one's own cultural identity..
Excellent for a
multi-cultural educator. Good for owning property in foreign lands. Can
accumulate a massive amount of property if Rahu's lord is powerful (see Ammachi, King
Birendra) but one does not directly own it. Drives a
foreign car :)
Attracted to extremes in the world of real estate and education. Sudden changes of property ownership; damage to
properties by natural catastrophe during Rahu periods.
Family lineage is
complex and perhaps exaggerated. Irregularities in the transmission of
the mother's culture. The person may create an exciting story
of one's roots in a foreign land.

"Desire for Exotic
Creativity"
-
Desire to challenge conventional boundaries of
creative intelligence, raising children, politics, speculation, and genius in performing
arts
-
Hunger to Possess fame, celebrity, and
hear the applause for one's individual intelligence
-
Attracted to speculation, amusements and
games
As the great taboo-breaker, Rahu destroys
customary moral boundaries and behavioral consistency in the
children; in the literary and creative genius; in
the politics, theatre, contests, games, and amusements.
Rahu disrupts
the customary methods of relating
to children and expressing individual creativity.
Can be an indication of celebrity, if Rahu's
dispositor is favorable.
Underclass, foreign, or taboo attributes of the
children. Heart trouble for the native.
-
Rahu in a rashi of Shani may deny children entirely.
-
Rahu in rashi of Budha, children arrive under
peculiar circumstances (illegitimacy, commercial adoption, children
of distant relatives thrice removed).
-
Rahu in other
rashis may give large numbers of children, or a child of remarkable,
outstanding talent.
Only the bhava lord can
determine whether the native can raise these unusual children, or
whether the kids will be raised by others (servants, ex-spouses, etc.)
Expansive but unstable
desire for children, which may be thwarted due to psychic fluctuations
and inconsistency of purpose. Fascination with celebrity and political
power. Excited by expressions of individual genius and by
"winning".
Otherwise, peculiar circumstances surrounding the
conception and development of children. Depending on the rashi, the
child may become famous or distinguished in its own culture.
Always something unusual in the circumstances of
conceiving the first child. Frequently an indicator of foreign
adoption. Can signify
adopting or raising one's grandchildren because one's own children have
an irregular lifestyle.
Das / Behari:
says:
Your creativity has a strange or foreign aura; not bad, but deep
and unusual. Your writing, for example, is so deep that others get somewhat absorbed in it. You have a
very easy time understanding the lower levels of society, the seedy, the underworld, the poor, the
distressed -- this is an area where you move easily.
You are deeply interested in liberation from material entanglement. Expert in understanding the inner meaning of things, in other words,
has insight.
During the periods ruled by Rahu, you will experience gains and success. Your spouse will sometimes exhibit a short temper and have stomach problems. Watch out for your own difficulties with the
heart and lungs.
You will probably have at least one son.
You worry much, and have few friends. Your first child may pose some difficulty.
During Rahu ruled periods, watch for indigestion and excess bile. Also, this Rahu brings you into association with the downtrodden of society
and it makes you mentally sharp. Your son(s) if any should watch out for snakes
and danger while in the country.

"Desire to Engage in
Argument"
-
Desire to challenge conventional methods of
social conflict management = takes risks in areas of medicine, poverty,
exploitation, servitude, divorce, and crime
-
Hunger to Possess drugs and medicines,
servants and animals, imbalanced and adversarial relationships.
Attracted to underclass and outcast persons.
Disruptive, exciting, sensually hungry drishti
to
-
domain-9 (religion / guru)
-
domain-11 ( marketplace / gains)
-
domain-1 ( appearance / social identity)
As the great taboo-breaker, Rahu destroys
customary moral boundaries and behavioral consistency in the
workplace and amongst employees; in the practice of
medicine and ministries of service; in the mother's
relatives.
Rahu disrupts
the customary methods of performing
one's service and managing conflict.
Generally when a papa-graha (malefic) occupies a dusthamsha,
the results are surprisingly good. The native's
strongest desires are focused in the area of "loss of
agreement", i.e. fighting, but one does not run from the
challenge. Rather, a deep and sustained engagement, driven by the desire
to obtain power in the workplace, often produces
expertise and profit.
Rahu in domain-6 gives a "mixed
bag" of benefits and liabilities amongst employees and in one's
material workplace.
Numerous agents
of social conflict such as police, military, underclass, outcast, foreigners, manipulators,
thieves, thugs, liars, physicians, drug dealers, prostitutes, poseurs,
and usurers will populate the stage in this theatre of life.
If Rahu's lord is auspicious, one may enjoy a profit
from dealing with these otherwise undesirable effects. For example, the
native may work in criminal justice, loan finance, or import-export of
exotic and desirable items. There will be some criminal undertone
to the dealing but the native may be clever enough to manipulate through
it.
No matter how successfully this situation is
managed, the native must learn to manipulate the manipulators.
There
will be considerable illness from toxicity, often psycho-mental in origin, and danger
from wrong drugs.
In case of severe illness, the native may find
remarkable cures from alternative treatments, or in a foreign land.
Das / Behari: says:
... produces great sustaining power ...
Every physical impediment is mysteriously removed, success in temporal endeavors is assured,
and diplomatic skill is developed to a considerable extent.
You may not have much idealism in life and may even keep undesirable
company. You will feel the allure of unethical, disrespectful or forbidden activities.
Your strength, wisdom, valor and conscience are stable. This Rahu denotes
destruction of the adversary. Gain of wealth, knowledge, vigor. No gain through uncles. Wealth through foreign leader type; trouble in back, for animals. Longevity, prosperous, of noble birth, Debauch. You may be a hero, handsome, intelligent, respected, well-known.
If well-aspected, all the evils fade away. A strong Rahu indicates vehicular wealth. Progeny to uncle denied; or daughters only.
... promotes health and strength, trusted employees, favors service, fortune through paternal relatives; some income or employment.
Benefit through prosperous uncles and aunts.
Danger from service in army or navy. Strong and brave. Radical, affluent, with conveyance. Jewelry, wealth
and fortune. Robust health. This Rahu indicates an unstable mind of the father
and maternal uncle. You may be infirm, imbecile, absence of enemies, friendly, full of riches. Black mole in the back.
Death due to blow of stick, stone, animal, falling from tree or by drowning. You are patient, tolerant, prosperous.

"Desire for Exotic
Alliances"
-
Desire to challenge conventional boundaries of
Marriage and Business contracts
-
Hunger to Possess agreements with
foreigners
-
Attracted to situations of negotiation,
attempted re-balance, annihilation and/or impending death
-
Often an unusual first marriage,
first spouse has taboo-breaking qualities
As the great taboo-breaker, Rahu destroys
customary moral boundaries and behavioral consistency in the
spouse; in the business partners and peer advisers;
in the process of making and keeping promises.
Rahu disrupts
the customary methods of maintaining agreement in marriage and business partnership.
May have an exotic or taboo-breaking attitude
toward sexual partnership. Menstrual problems for women. Diabetic
or other paired-organ imbalance. The spouse is unwilling to enter
alliance, or spouse has
very peculiar sensual tastes, and sexual harmony in marriage is deranged.
Ketu in lagna = karaka for celibate sainthood.
Despite private relationship troubles, the native may appear to be very
pure. Rahu/7
may indicate that the primary marriage partner is actually a deity not a
human. Deities are permitted to be promiscuous. If the partner is human,
predict trouble from unfaithfulness to the marriage contract. Human spouse, if any, may be a force of
chaos. Perpetual sexual imbalance in the marriage.
Foreign, exotic, or taboo-breaking attributes of the spouse.
Marriage represents entitlement to satisfy a personal desire at the
expense of social conformity.
Spouse and the native may be externally successful in worldly
life, but the spouses boundary-breaking excesses or foreign behaviors are a permanent source of
instability and challenge in the
native's life. Spouse is inappropriate.
-
If Rahu + Shani, spouse is withholding.
-
If Rahu + Kuja, spousal passion is excessive,
may be uncontainable.
Rahu in domain-7 is excellent for international business
negotiations; spouse's diplomatic capabilities with foreigners is an asset.
Spouse from a different cultural background, or was born geographically
a long distance away from the birth place of the native.
Also good for careers in counseling/advising in multi-cultural and socially taboo-content relationships.
Das / Behari: says:
"Rahu, being a karmic planet, creates much unhappiness in the Seventh house. Whether alone or in association with any other planet, its impact is
sorrowful.
You fall into relationships with partners who are very often
undesirable, quarrelsome, extravagant, and inflexible; you either suffer from genito-urinary troubles or are
dishonorable. Very often you have to face separation, divorce, or death of the marriage partner.
Fond of traveling, of changing your job, and of cultivating new
associations - all with the objective of securing something for personal satisfaction. You are
skillful and will confer fame and prosperity. Trouble through spouse, body aches, much enmity, loss through trade.
Two
marriages. Your spouse should be careful of infections in
generative organs. Separation from the relatives and public slander.
Danger of separation from kinsfolk and disgrace. Mentally suffering, deranged, idle, wanderer, short-tempered, vicious, quarrelsome.
Hostile to partner, furious, quarrelsome, sick, restless, malicious, strife, opposition and hindrance in every work.
Depriving sensual pleasure. Menstrual problems in woman. As your partner is not willing
and co-existing you may be driven to other
spouses.
Conceited, sensual and sick. Trouble and difficulty in travel, rheumatism. Frightened, irreligious, cruel. Fast but without family happiness. You may be a diabetic, strife with relatives, touchy, spiteful, vain, discontented, contact with lewd spouses.
Luck through sinful acts. Success through speculation, lottery and game of chance or races. Infection through impure mates. Wicked. More friends than enemies.
Gain through dealing with others. Pleasure and benefit through mates. A wise and wealthy partner; gain after marriage. Short-statured.
This Rahu is not a killer; but can cause danger to the people indicated by the house."

as covert military invasions, uncovering ancient history, surgeries,

Rahu disrupts
the customary methods of managing the joint assets of marriage, and
gives a passion for handling sudden emergencies.

obsessive passion for secrets.

was privy to some terrifying war secrets
(Rahu-Mesha-8) including the specter of the

self-power-crazed tyrants Hitler and Stalin (Mesha,

to plead for help (Kanya) from secret alliances (8). He had a
passion for hidden danger naturally with L-8
and Rahu's lord Kuja in lagna and traveled the world to write
argumentative accounts (Kanya) of war.
Rahu is beneficial in domain-8, but only for
magical or tantric healings, such as surgery, and emergency
intervention. Rahu in domain-8 may bring inherited wealth,
and surprisingly broad access to privileged information. Much hidden
interaction with foreigners, exotic and secret world-power lineages
(if in a regal sign) and a great attraction to situations involving
catastrophic, forced, and sudden changes.
Hunger for the
hidden, secret, mysterious, confidential, deadly, dangerous, or taboo.
Keynote of interventionist healers in the acute transitional stages of life
and death. Makes an excellent psychiatrist and medical or
crime writer. Engaged
with the rebuilding of identity after catastrophic change. Intrigued by the
extraordinary transformation of life force during emergencies.
Hunger for immersion in sudden movements of
the cycle of birth and death, such as acute psycho-medical trauma, emergency
first-responder, medical "triage", wills and estates,
large-scale taxation, managing weapons of mass destruction,
awareness of forces of great evil in the world.
Death by poison/drugs, snake-venom, or mysterious surprise
attack.
Das / Behari: says:
... you are always trying to attain your goal, but unfortunately your goal is not often clear to you. Under such conditions you
always worry about unimportant things or strive after something which seems important momentarily but gives no ultimate satisfaction, and to attain your assumed objective you may
associate with undesirable characters who bring a bad name.
You suffer from complex ailments which are difficult to diagnose. Rahu promotes health; promises longevity; grants gifts, legacies
and inheritance from the dead. You are extravagant, sick, strife with
brothers, life away from birthplace, unhappy family life.
Denied happiness through spouse, children, honor, education; suffers from diseases of rectum, diabetes; hindrances or enemies. Complains of gastralgia or hystericus etc.
Denied patrimony. Respected and recognized by the rulers and pundits. Fortune smiles once; but losses mock you again and again.
Forsaken by the noble for no reason. Gain of sufficient wealth from the
government. And sometimes it is lost. Well-built, short-tempered. Free from danger; suffers from diseases of the generative organs, hydrocele, gain through defeated enemy.
Trouble, ill-spoken, slow coach and ailing. Vicious. Much trouble and suffering. Praised by the state. Condemned by some. Many ups
and downs. Stomach problem through hard labor. Honor and fame from the government, noble by deed
and thought, healthy, some income or employment. Happy in old age.

-
Hunger to Possess priestly knowledge and temple admission

As the great taboo-breaker, Rahu destroys
customary moral boundaries and behavioral consistency in the
father; in the religious teachers; and in belief
system. (cf. Rabindranath
Tagore, opposed to caste-based morality.)
Rahu disrupts
the customary methods of ritual
performance and wisdom teaching.
High desire for intense experience in religious
ritual and belief systems. Often has a foreign or outsider guru.
Not beneficial
for the Father, who is associated with profligacy, underclass behaviors,
or risky foreign
undertakings. Father may be involved in espionage or manipulation of
foreign governments; or a cult priest; or other surreptitious taboo-breaking
roles. The guru may be a renegade anti-traditionalist.
Native tends toward extremes in
ceremonial religion, with
powerful desire to re-interpret or re-appropriate religious systems. Wants
to make changes in the existing temples of knowledge and their
priesthood.
If Rahu is ill-disposed, may desecrate temples of knowledge.
Das / Behari: says:
"The nodes of the Moon have supreme importance in spiritual evolution. Rahu, the material polarity of the shadowy Nodes,
takes you to sacred places, associate you with spiritual aspirants, and make you a partner in spiritual celebrations and observances.
Preparing you in this way to receive the influence of the divine, Rahu equips you for this. You are
a scholar; accredited for virtues; impressive in speech in an assembly; cultured and humane; veneration, belief and devotion in gods and sacred places.
Grateful; upbringing your own family. You are revered for your merit; learned; generous. You give away useful things in charity; never leaving a job in the middle, perseverance; virtuous; keeping the family tradition; spotless reputation. Helps and supports relatives; contented with the partner. Attendants.
Affluent landlord and agriculturist.
[cf. Rabindranath

You show faith in religions other than your own. Loss of wealth. Want of truth, conduct, luck and wisdom. Much traveling, pauper, unfriendly to relatives, some physical ailment. Low, mean, shabby and afraid of enemies. Wicked. Hostile. A town leader. Vicious. Serving others and sex with low-class persons.
You have many attendants, prosperous, fortunate, little faith in false religion, poor health, eloquent speaker, agreeable and cordial with the partner, affectionate, childless, proud of your community, liar, speaks ill of false religion and unmindful of your duty. This Rahu denotes mental sharpness and gain through educational, legal and religious affairs; gain through voyages and foreign affairs; highly intuitive."

"Desire for Transformative
Social Leadership"
-
Desire to challenge conventional boundaries
protecting Leadership
Respect and Prestige
-
Hunger to possess respected positions, high
reputation, important duties, government appointments
-
Attracted to executive offices, tops of
pyramids, positions of power and command
As the great taboo-breaker, Rahu destroys
customary moral accountability and behavioral consistency in the
father's family; in the government and its representatives;
and in the rule of law.
Rahu disrupts
the customary methods of leading organizations,
maintaining public decorum, and managing
hierarchies.
Underclass, taboo-breaking, or exotic element in the public
personality.
"Outsider" breakthrough into
iconic, symbolic public roles. Popular with the working classes, those
who like to "bet on a dark horse", or "root for the
little guy". Perceived as an agent of change in the highest echelons
of privilege and prestige.
To conventional observers, this person seems like
an inappropriate or vulgar choice for an exalted public leadership role. However if
Rahu's lord is auspicious the public becomes fascinated with the native
and one retains high dignity for a good long time.
Associated with sudden changes in leadership.
Wants status objects and admiration of the masses.
The native may profit from power
vacuums and social instability.
An iconic agent of social change. Desires
a high position in hierarchy,
but has an exotic and taboo-challenging style of getting there.
Das / Behari: says:
"Your mission in life is for furthering some special cause in the world. Depending on your status in society and the planetary combinations, this special mission may be predicted; but the real impulse of this shadowy planet will be to make you dedicated to a cause which you will want to carry forward even at the risk of life, status, or health. Undaunted by any difficulty, undeterred by any impediment, you will persist with a sense of dedication, whether you are waging a war of complete annihilation, reconstructing a social order, or composing verses of celestial beauty and harmony. Rahu achieves its objective despite whatever hardships it has to undergo. Its impulse produces persons of great merit, devotion, and religious susceptibilities. With inauspicious associations and influences Rahu can, however, make you disturbed and instill evil ideas in your head. Rahu in the 10th gives rise to Raja Yoga during your own periods. Danger to mother in the 32nd year, to father, in 7th; to patrimony, in 8th. Fortune in 36th year; public honor and respect in 42nd year. Name, fame, status through hard work and skill. Connected with spouses who are disrespected due to their service, loss of land, wealth, health; fear; malice, love for some type of disrespected poetry; or residence in a backward village, etc. Your Rahu denotes that you may be so fortunate as to visit the sacred holy places in this lifetime. Clever thief, characterless, quarrelsome, sensual, dishonest, chattering, miserable, inert, indifferent, unfortunate, living abroad, unsteady, vicious. Few sons, helpful and fearless. Danger from conveyance. Danger and trouble for parents and brother. A manager, advisor or chief of a group. Brave, wise and wealthy. (Note: Rahu is in charge of a number of not so good qualities. The 10th is an important house. These things may only appear in thoughts; not necessarily manifesting depending on the overall strength of you and thus the chart. Sensual, extravagant, affluent, winner, fickle, fond of poetry and drama, competition or confrontation, migratory, successful in business. Rahu makes you a bit of an intoxicator, wrong doing, sleeplessness, living or working with foreigners, sex with choice partners, finds comfort and pleasure in the company of irreligious people, discontented with own relatives or father, love and sex with divorced or separated persons, or persons from disturbed love affairs. Gets support from strong persons, clever but tense. These things may be connected to career as the 10th rules career."

"Desire for Networks of
Exotic Association"
-
Desire to challenge conventional boundaries of
Gainful Association and profitable Friendship
-
Hunger to Possess networks of affiliation
and connection
-
attracted to large gatherings such as
country fayre and Kumbha mela, political fundraisers and rallies,
giant electronic networks
As the great taboo-breaker, Rahu destroys
customary moral accountability and behavioral consistency in the
elder sibling; in the marketplace and its rules; and in
process of setting and achieving goals.
Rahu disrupts
the customary methods of large-group networking and
voluntary, profitable associations.
"Outsider" in the conventional
marketplace. Rahu is the co-ruler of Kumbha the natural lord of
domain-11. Normally, Rahu in domain-11 is a karaka for wealth. Associated
with pyramid schemes and unusual fundraising methods.
The native feels a great hunger for extending the
reach of one's circle of profitable association, which
causes the native to form networks of friendship amongst highly
desire-driven persons. The native is most interested in the company
of those whose hunger for profit is very strong.
A chameleon of society, who enjoys manipulating
the needs and desires of others for personal profit.
Rahu in domain-11 is a karaka for marketplace success, and a high (though fluctuating) income. Rahu's lord must be auspicious to provide
long-term sustained profits.
Das / Behari: says:
"Rahu is powerful to provide material prosperity when it is in the 11th house. However, you may lack modesty. You can control your desires and activities when you want to. You are very wise, though you don't speak much, preferring definite results before spending speaking energy. Therefore, you are a master at strategy, where forethought and tongue-holding is required. Therefore you are a good commander, and possibly a writer. You live away from your birth land, and mix well with foreigners and drifters. The way you earn money is hard to predict because you might be dealing in ways that others are not aware of, except those with whom you deal. If other favorable conditions are present, this is very good for becoming an eminent philosopher, expounding your thoughts effectively. Rahu in the 11th gives rise to Raja Yoga during Rahu's periods. Rahu in the 11th means gains through foreigners. Though you respect the really learned, you yourself are often found in a level of code or conduct just below the standard that you respect. Therefore, while you may associate with priests, you yourself may instead prefer to have intense business dealings, for example. This Rahu is not good for gaining status, but does indicate success in various ways. Try to protect your hearing as it indicates trouble there. This Rahu protects against harm in general. Rahu in the 11th gives you faithful friends who are astrologers and the like. You can succeed in both business or service. The separation from an elder brother may become a burden. Marriage at 27, life "begins" at 28, and sudden gain of wealth in the 42nd year."

"Desire for Exotic
Fantasy"
-
Desire to penetrate the conventional boundaries
which protect astral beings, Sanctuary, Loss of Identity, and Moksha
-
Hunger to clairvoyantly possess dreams, images, and
astral information
-
Magnetically attracted to foreign lands, private
enclosures, meditation centers, monasteries, hospitals, and ashrams
As the great taboo-breaker, Rahu destroys
customary moral boundaries and behavioral consistency in the
ashram, hospital, or sanctuary; in the meditation and private
prayer; and in foreign lands.
Rahu disrupts
the customary dividing walls surrounding private enclosures
and Rahu interferes with the process of separating dream
world fantasy from
the material world reality..
One's private world of dreams and fantasies is
forever churning and trying to merge with the imaginations of others, or
invade the boundaries of others' private enclosures.
If Rahu's lord is auspicious, wonderful dreams will
fuel a rich fantasy life. If Rahu's lord is inauspicious, 'nightmares'
disrupt the native's peace of mind.
Karma
of desire-driven, involuntary loss of identity and imprisonment during Rahu periods
(Martha Stewart).
Power to stimulate the imaginative fantasies of
others. Power to exhume, unearth, or excavate deeply buried subconscious
desires.
May be engaged in boundary-challenging research
in library, laboratory, or field work in foreign lands.
Can change one's identity by traveling to a foreign
land (Thomas Merton, Arnold Schwarzenegger). Likes to lose one
personality identity and gain another, perhaps several times during the
lifetime. Enjoys the role of "outsider".
Sexually, Rahu may introduce "strange bedfellows".
Native enjoys desire for exotic association in the bedroom and taboo bed pleasures.
The native may possess a vivid and passionate fantasy life.
Rahu reduces the boundary between the dream world and the real world.
Desires to retreat from the fixed conventional
identity of one's upbringing. Depending on other graha in domain-12 and
Rahu's lord, can
lead to a lifetime of world travel, meditation and prayer, espionage,
"under the table" transactions, or drug addiction.
Traditionally, any malefic in 12 should give
trouble with the left eye. Rahu may give an eye-disease condition which
has the potential for transformative healing through exotic medical
treatment.
Adventure involving foreign operators and underclass dealings.
If Rahu's lord is auspicious, favors extraordinary
break-throughs in hospital work or private residential treatment
centers. Healing spas in foreign lands.
Does not respect ethnic and religious customary
limits.
From domain-12, Rahu casts taboo-challenging drishti upon domain-4 (home
and country), domain-6 (servitude and animals), and domain-8 (sudden,
forced changes; secret information).
For example, Martha
Stewart went to prison in Rahu mahadasha, bhukti of Shukra = L-8.
Rahu must be carefully examined to see whether the total effect is
sattvic or tamasic. It can go either way.
Das / Behari: says:
"Rahu in this Twelfth house of redemption makes the physical life difficult and
upsets all established order.
The expected course of life is not followed and you are forced to adopt a way of life in which there is much suffering, physical debility and psychological helplessness.
Your movement is restricted; mental anguish often becomes acute. But the ordeals of life caused by Rahu provide you with the celestial
nectar. After a big psychological purging, you receive a spiritual bath and are anointed into the secret mysteries of life.
From the material standpoint, Rahu in the Twelfth house is considered inauspicious, suggesting that the purging operation manifests through immoral acts and unfortunate events. In the ordeal of the spiritual path,
such difficulties are necessary.
Rahu functions as a karmic agent, producing trials so that the latent spirituality which is the true influence of the Twelfth house may emerge. You are miserable; sharp pain in ribs. However hard you may work, you do not get any success or gain, rather suffers losses. Friend of the wicked and enemy of the good.
At last you succeed in your desires and ambitions. You are very
humble; suffer from acute bilious pain in the chest and heart. With best effort
you cannot modify your early life; the latter is most fruitful. A friend of the knave and enemy of the noble. You are quarrelsome, idle, a debtor, cunning, immodest, rich, benevolent, ailment of the eyes, wound in feet, a slur on the family, wastes away your time
and energy; can meet your demand if you stays in one place.
Much traveling, separation from spouse and family, ugly and shabby. Dropsy. Robbed by lowly tribals. Separation of maternal uncle; repents after losing temper. You are inert, weak, hostile to relatives, cheat, ill-spent money.
You are very handsome, prosperous but ophthalmia or iritis. Few sons; vicious; pain, trouble, punishment are indicated . This Rahu denotes gain through social affairs; good for spiritualism; birth unnatural."

Q: Hi Barbara,
The query was about this detail :
Under the House 9 rahu, this says in the 4th line of the
second last paragraph.
"A town leader. Vicious. Serving others and sex with
low-class persons." What does low-class person mean here?
Thanks in Advance,
A:Namaste -- Great question!
The quotation marks and italics indicate that those paragraphs are
a quotation, not my own writing.
This particular quotation comes from the writings of Das Goravani.
Goravani's writings which accompany his Jyotisha software packages
do somewhat synthesize a number of quotations from
Bepin Behari's
books, along with English translations from various Jyotisha
classic commentaries. This particular item "sex with low-class
persons" could be an English translation from Parashara or Jaimini
or another authority. Unfortunately I don't know the original
source of the phrase. ( Das
might know.)
As a result of literary synthesis, the paragraphs contain some
cryptic references like "sex with low-class persons". This
outcome is not a fixed prediction but rather it *could be* the
Rahu outcome under certain circumstances.
The "could be
under particular circumstance " introduction to phrases such
as "sex with low-class persons" is usually left out
of word-for-word English translations from the Sanskrit shlokas.
The pattern of the shlokas contains a rhetorically implicit
unwritten subject. Unfortunately, in the direct translation,
all we get is the fragmented phrase; the subject was not
written so it is not translated. That's one of the big problems
with word-for-word translations - a lot of meaning can get left
out!
So .... we have to think backwards, and fill in the
missing pieces. What would be the circumstances under
which Rahu in 9 might produce such an outcome? And who are the
"low class" persons?
Let's try this approach to discovery:
In Jyotisha, Rahu is famously a malefic graha (although He is fun
sometimes); naturally, it is inauspicious to have a papa-graha in
the maha-subha-sthana.
From a non-egalitarian perspective "low-class"
is an attribute of Kumbha, and lord Shani, associated with the
masses. Rahu and Shani are the co-lords of Kumbha. Kumbha really
includes everyone, since Kumbha represents networks, and everyone
is eventually connected to everyone else. Kumbha represents the
common humanity.
Yet, outside the equalizing worlds of
Mithuna/Thula/Kumbha, the world can be divided into
hierarchical classes, and the great masses of workers, who form
the big solid base of the hierarchy, then become "low class".
So, what does "low-class" mean re: Rahu/9?
My guess is, there is only a low class if there is also a
high class. In domain-11, there really is not any
"upstairs-downstairs". Kumbha = "large, rule-driven
systems". Domain-11 = a huge, regulated, integrated network
of persons, ideas, or devices (e.g., computers) e.g. a marketplace
or a voting assembly.
Does domain-9 have a high class to distinguish from a low class? I
think it does. Dharma bhava is explicitly not a house of the
common person. It is an elite house, the domain
of wisdom-teachings, the religious knowers, universities, temples,
priests, philosophy teachers. Also 9 is associated with divine
favor which can bring vast amounts of wealth.
Also, dharma bhava is the highest point on the mountain
from which humans may communicate to the divine. Therefore, it is
inauspicious to have low or flat things (Shani-Rahu, Kumbha) in
the "high place" domain-9.
Rahu can bring exotic attractions (notably, sexual) into whatever
bhava He occupies. Rahu's job is to fan the flames of unsatisfied
desires. So, if Rahu represents taboo-breaking passions
and Rahu the co-lord of "commoners" (Kumbha) occurs in the bhava
of the patrician wisdom class, there could be some problem of
culturally inappropriate passions involving the
plebian classes for sure.
It's just a "could be" of course since another moral agency
within the nativity (Shani, Surya, even Budha can be moral actors)
could easily restrain the native from acting on Rahu's impulsive
desires.
It might be that the outcome is strictly
doctrinal, e.g. the native
is attracted to foreign religious beliefs or exotic
philosophical knowledge. The religious teachers can be
quite extraordinary in character - for example, one of
Paramahamsha Yogananda's teachers was the famous 500+ year old
Guru Babaji, who certainly breaks cultural expectations of
chronological longevity.
Yet even if the actual outcome is
quite reserved, manifesting only on the most rarified planes of
perception: when Rahu occupies
dharma bhava, the impulse to challenge cultural boundaries would
always influence the ninth house.
That's my estimation of what it means. But don't take my word for
it! Please be encouraged to examine the nativities of known people
(celebrities, family members) who
have Rahu/9 in either radix or navamsha, to see whether such a
phrase "sex with low-class persons" makes sense in their genuine
material lives. As
Shri B.V. Raman often said, the principles of Jyotisha must be
able to withstand application to real lives.
The researcher may find that often, the "sex" is more of a mental
congress, not so much physical, rather an interest in
"unconventional" philosophies, which may become path-breaking and
extraordinary e.g. Guru
Paramahamsa
Yogananda. I have seen a chart of Yogananda's guru Shri Swami
Yukteshwar which also features Rahu/9. In their day, they both had
quite radical views of religious truth and were somewhat offensive
to "high-minded" conventionally religious pundits.
And of course, everything depends on the condition of a graha who
is Rahu's lord. In the 9th navamsha, the behavior might manifest
more through the person's spouse; even in radix, the behavior
might emerge more through one's father than through one's own
life.
Best wishes for your success in Jyotisha studies,
Sincerely,
Barbara Pijan Lama, Jyotisha Q:
Madame, I am a bachelor scientist still seeking my bride. At
nearly 30 years of age, I feel ready to undertake the quest for a
life-partner, a woman, who can complete me. However, with Rahu in
my first house of the kundali, I am worried. I've read some
frightening predictions about Ketu in the marriage house. Am I
doomed to an unhappy marriage? Should I begin the search for a
suitable alliance - or is such a result scientifically impossible?
A: It is nothing to be
superstitiously worried about! And happiness in marriage is
certainly not "scientifically impossible"!
When
Rahu-Ketu occupy either 1-7 of radix kundali or 1-7 on the
Chandra lagna, the native bonds best with a spouse who also
has either 1-7 of radix kundali or 1-7 on the Chandra lagna.
When evaluating the nativities of potential spouses
during your search for a suitable alliance, give preference to
those who have either Rahu or Ketu in radix lagna or Chandra
lagna.
Stress is the result of the
gap between expectation and
reality. Stress can be much reduced by
closing that gap!
If one can anticipate that, due to Ketu in 7, one will not
always easily understand the spouse nor the business partner
nor the professional advisers, one can put safety structures
in place. You may need to have extra support
to achieve good marital communication.
I've seen a
number of Rahu-Ketu partnerships successfully negotiate the
nodal confusion. They almost all had a "professional listener"
such as a marital therapist, religious counselor, or mediation
attorney, on retainer, throughout their marriage.
Whenever severe disagreement or apparent "non-cooperation" of
the Ketu-indicated spouse would arise, these smart couples
(and business partners) would realize that it was time to ask
for help. And they would get the help they needed, before
anger, frustration, and disappointment that the marriage did
not have "normal" levels of agreement could start to poison
the relationship.
The situation is not crippling but it
does require honest, intelligent, non-blaming
management. The
problems faced by an adult marriage partner with Rahu-Ketu
afflicting the marriage house will not go away. The task of
reaching clear agreements will remain challenging throughout
life.
However, these challenges can be very
successfully managed with the right behavioral tools and
third-party consulting structure in place.

Dalai Lama on the Guru:
I have made the point in the past that it is not necessary to consider someone
one's guru from the very outset simply because one has heard the explanation of
the Buddha's teachings from that person. At first, it is much better if one does
not have that kind of attitude toward them, simply regarding them as a
Dharma-friend. One gets teachings, and time goes by.
Then, when one feels that
one knows that person quite well, and can take them as one's guru without any
danger of transgressing the commitments that accompany such a relationship, when
one has that kind of confidence, then one can go ahead and take him or her as
one's guru.
The Lord Buddha himself made it quite clear in both the Vinaya sutras and in the
Mahayana scriptures, and even in the Tantrayana, in a very detailed fashion,
what the qualities of a teacher should be.
This is why I often criticize the
Tibetan attitude of seeing whatever the guru does as good, of respecting
everything that the guru does right from the start without the initial period of
examination.
Of course, if the guru is really qualified, then to have such an
attitude is very worthwhile.
Take the cases of Naropa and Marpa, for example. Sometimes it appears as though
some of the things Tilopa asked of Naropa, or Naropa of Marpa, were
unreasonable. Deep down, however, these requests had great meaning.
Because of
their great faith in their gurus, Naropa and Marpa did as instructed. Despite
the fact that they appeared to be unreasonable, because the teachers were
qualified, their actions had some meaning. In such situations, it is necessary
that from the disciple's side all of the actions of the teacher be respected.
But this cannot be compared to the case of ordinary people.
Broadly speaking, I feel that the Buddha gave us complete freedom of choice to
thoroughly examine the person who is to be our guru.
This is very important.
Unless one is definite, one should not take them as a guru. This preliminary
examination is a kind of precautionary measure.
