Shani (Saturn) in Twelve Houses (bhava)

Directory of Shani-Related Pages

When reading any nativity, these effects must be balanced with all effects of all the other graha.

  • On the minus side, fearful and conservative Shani-Kronos brings to His occupied house behaviors which are experienced as restrictive. Characteristics of the environments and agents in domains 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11, and 12 may be stubborn, persistent, fearful, conservative and slow.

  • On the plus side, in kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) lawful Shani may be experienced as supportive. Shani imposes routines , conventional behavior patterns, predictable environments , and realistic expectations . In kendra, Shani's influence is overall favorable due to the value of regularity in those environments.

The native is rarely "inspired" or socially praised by one's work in the Shani-occupied house. Rather, the Shani-related work provides routine and structure.

One has the sense of fulfilling social obligation, and earning one's wages through honest labor. Shani is not glamorous or fun. He needs endless repetition and He hates any type of Change!

The natural enemies of slow and step-wise Shani  =

  1. Surya the champion of soul transformation through Intelligence

  2. Rahu the demonic agent of transformation through taboo-breaking and the chaos of raging desires.

If Shani is forced to share a bhava with Surya or Rahu, Shani will lose the comfort of a predictable routine and the native's life will be deeply unsettled. Nevertheless the native may become a force

Perfectionism

Shani brings psychological perfectionism.

  • Upon the bhava of His residence, Shanaicarya enforces a karmic emphasis on material accomplishment and completion according to fixed protocol,.

  • One must work on the task until it is completely perfect. No fun allowed.

  • (See Shani and Bulimia = the dysfunctional mandate to make a perfect Body.)

Birth

Shani in 1 impedes and retards pre-natal orbirth-event conditions; the native will have some stunting or constriction according to the rashi.

  1. Mesha = stunting or constriction of the head, skull, muscles, or blood
  2. Vrishabha= stunting or constriction of the

  10. Makara = stunting or constriction of the skeleton, bones, cartilage
  11. Kumbha = = stunting or constriction of the skin, nerves

The native's birth may have been delayed.

  • If Shani + Rahu, or Shani + Kuja, complications of birth.

Habits of fleshly comportment, such as the way one looks or moves, are resistant to change.

The native who wishes to change one's package of social attributes, such as the ethno-cultural appearance, the social demographic markers, the musculature or body physique, will find such a project to be slow-going and demanding much time.

Try as one might to change the package of attributes, the original (1) identity from the time of birth will persist.

Identity Anxiety. Fear and worry regarding the physical appearance and social identity.

  • Long endurance is required to obtain proper social rank and recognition. Long and diligent work is required, steadiness of purpose, and loyalty to an organization or a goal.

  • One may begin the journey toward recognition in a state of deficiency, humiliation, and social failure.  (Al Gore,, Jimmy Carter , Stephen King , Camilla Parker-Bowles)

  • Must work to earn validation of the flesh-based social identity. Works to be fully approved, in compliance, and judged perfect under the rule of human law. Yet survival fears based in past-life karma enforce the mandate to perform this work over and over again, until the ignorance is transformed into wisdom. "Not good enough" syndrome.

  • The native is most comfortable in ranked organizations, such as government institutions and very large quasi-government corporations. (Ulysses S. Grant , Margaret Thatcher, Jimmy Carter , Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin, Sen. John McCain, Jawaharlal Nehru , Indira Gandhi , Sonia Gandhi, G.W. Bush , Al Gore, Jr..)

  • A profoundly lawful personality who pays focused attention to matters of social rank And hierarchical position.

Physical behaviors are fundamentally stubborn, persistent, conservative and slow.

Appearance and Social Identity

Shani prefers that matters of his residence should be modest, respectable, and regulated. In domain-1, Shani favors a conforming appearance, traditional costume, and identity with some large corporate organization or government.

Naturally, other graha joining Shani in lagna or drishti from more exciting planets can alter the appearance. (Shukra adds attractiveness, a Guru drishti adds height, etc.) Yet, Shani the Regulator will noticeably prefer a personality and physique that conforms to mainstream expectations in the culture of origin or the culture of choice.

It is quite rare to find a flamboyant theatrical type with Shani in lagna. The Shani-rising native is born to take social responsibility; one gravitates naturally toward executive roles in corporate hierarchies and government.

Habits and Routines he social personality does best when supported by regular procedures, habits, And routines. (Not always "good" habits; but always "regular" habits!)

  • The native is exceptionally conscious of Time (Shani) and if Shani is auspicious one's time-management skills are of a high caliber. The native is remarkably organized and materially productive.

  • Shani does not confer creativity or intelligence (those emit from Surya). Rather, Old Kronos grants a work ethos and material grounding in space and time.

The Hard Edge

  • Rough or tough "hard-boiled" edge to the personal appearance: one appears older, more responsible, burdened by duty, judgmental, or bitterly sober. Rather plain looking as a rule.

  • Psychologically identified with hard-working, dry, cold, brittle, hard-packed, unfertile and unyielding environments, such as the high desert (cold and hard) and those who make their living (labor, Shani) in tough places with scarce resources. Especially a shortage of water.

Transit

  • When gochara Shani moves across the first house from lagna (material) or from Chandra (emotional) one has a sense of needing to "start over".

  • here may be some sense of personality collapse As Shani pulverizes he Outdated structures, expectations, and behaviors to which the personality may be clinging.

Resistance to Body Validation

  • Resistance toward healthy vitality, personal glamour, competitive strength, athletic vigor, unique personal identity.

  • he particular type of resisted identity will be indicated by the rashi and any companion graha. Awkward in youth.

  • Nevertheless the physical body is highly disciplined and the native is usually committed to a demanding, rather uninteresting routine of muscular exercise.

Resistance to Charismatic Individuality

Ironically, the native is so busy working and carrying public responsibilities that there is no time to develop one's individuality. Shani rules the masses; one is primarily identified with large corporations, governments, and social mass movement.

Although Shani has dignity in kendra where He provides skilled leadership and the power to impose an orderly environment on one's downstream, one's fundamental identity is populist, with the vast legions of the common man.

[Naturally, if other graha induce a charismatic glitter, this somber style can lighten up considerably. Also, one may develop extraordinary charismatic intelligence in other channels which do not rely on the physical appearance, e.g. Stephen King expresses genius through his books.]

  • The native One's identity is largely a function of socially expected roles and attributes.

= a social ranking functionary who works the socially approved system of physical appearances and hierarchical identities. This person must apply sustained effort with limited resources (Shani)oward the maintenance of identity as defined by social rank and position.

Some difficulties or maturation are required before obtaining confidence in life entitlement. This personality is profoundly affected by some type of survival fear which makes one a very hard worker.

Survival patterns are imprinted at the very earliest developmental stages. Survival patterns range from primitive to highly sophisticated, according to the nativity.

E.g., when Shani is otherwise well-disposed, native is exceptionally responsible.

If Budha is auspicious, survival patterns are engaged with sharp analytical thinking. ( Margaret Thatcher, Vladimir Putin)

If Surya is strong, the native is remarkably self-sufficient.

However there is no escaping the damage that Shani does in lagna. The native has a overwhelming strong perception of structures, rules, limitations, Scarcity and Time. This perception will be channeled through the mechanism of the entire nativity.

Typical mistakes due to past-life karmic ignorance

  • Mistakes will tend to be made repeatedly and a long-term burden carried, in the area of physical body appearance, athletic competition, and social personality development.

  • Shani in kendra has a high rate of success in the task of learning from one's mistakes.

  • Once the early mistakes are corrected, the native institutes a new routine, and surprising social success begins to attend the one who seemed earlier to be unable to find one's place.

  • Physically and Socially Awkward in Youth.

  • After the age of 31 (past the first Saturn Return) the native will see good results from matters of the houses ruled by Shani.

    • Barack Obama = Shani-Makara = L-1 [physical appearance, athletic discipline] - L-2 [accumulated wealth, knowledge of history]

    • Jimmy Carter = Shani-Thula= L-4 [education, housing, national security] - L-5 [politics, elections, prizes]

    • Indira Gandhi = Shani-Kakata = L-7 [alliances, agreements, negotiations] - L-8 [secret information, hidden wealth, conditions of death]

Publicity and Publications

  • Shani's cautious drishti upon domain-3 makes the native somewhat leery of making announcements.

  • One does not wish the press to endanger one's reputation; thus one avoids becoming newsworthy. Those announcements which

  • Should Shani occupy the lagna whilst He both owns and aspects domain-3 ( Vrishchika lagna, Dhanusha lagna) the native may experience a deep resistance to making announcements or reports of any kind, including even the conventional holiday greetings messages. Personal communications such as handwritten messages may have a cramped or stunted appearance. (Similar to effect of Shani drishti upon Budha-Makara or Budha-Kumbha.)

"... if Saturn occupies the Ascendant at a person's birth, he will be poor, sickly, love stricken, very unclean, suffering from diseases during his childhood and indistinct in his speech.

However, if any of the signs -- Sagittarius, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn [ Barack Obama] and Libra [ Margaret Thatcher, Jimmy Carter] be the Ascendant and Saturn should occupy it at birth, the person concerned will be equal to a king, the headman of a village or the mayor of the city, a great scholar and will be handsome. "~~ Brihat Jatak A

Effects

Fear of appearing inappropriate or low ranked. Subconscious fear of inability to survive. A difficult childbirth for the infant native, often deeply suppressed in memory. The mother may have been unwillingly to give birth, or resistant to having another child. Lifelong feelings of scarcity and a need to work hard to gain acceptance.

Classical authorities often claim that Shani in lagna creates an impoverished, bony or emaciated appearance. In fact, I often see large-sized, even overweight person with Shani in lagna. Also there are plenty of wealthy professional people who have Jyotisha Shani in radix lagna. Wealth comes even when Shani is also rising in navamsha!

IMO, Shani in lagna does not per se give a thin body, poverty, or ill-health. At least in the modern West, the emaciation may easily be emotional or spiritual rather than physical in appearance.

The native is always feeling blocked, deprived, and hungry for validation. However, in the West at least, the native may eat as much supposedly nourishing food as they want. Of course, this food is often tainted, and in the case of Shani in lagna the native simply never feels satisfied with their food (or their relationships, or their social standing, or anything else!

Really, domain-2 rules the mouth and access to food, so Shani in lagna does not limit food or money. Shani in lagna does limit one's access to self-satisfaction and material happiness.

Self-image

The native is not self-validating and thus One must work hard and consistently to guarantee the flow of essential social validation.

The general public has more power over this native's self-image than over one who does not have Shani in radix lagna, or with Chandra.

Thus despite Shani's reputation for making a dark, enslaved-to-survival laborer, the nativities above which represent those holding very high political office, will be seen best as "enslaved" to public opinion, and very much needing validation from Shani things such as hard work, large organization, rule of large, and hierarchical organizations.

Appearance he Shani-rising native will always be a hard worker and face obstacles in life, but the physical appearance is not typically thin, dark, or bony in appearance as the classics often suggest. IMO the classic Jyotisha commentaries are by and large situated in ancient or medieval culture. 'Work' in those days was almost always manual work which had the effects of thin, dark, bony, tired etc.

However 'work' these days is often mental work. Yes it is exhausting, but heavy repetitive indoor work tends toward a pasty complexion, sedentary plumpness and can also build great wealth! The central effect of Shani in lagna is the *survival fear* which drives the work, not the type of work itself.

What I do see much more often in my Western clientele (which includes numerous immigrant Easterners now settled in USA) is a tendency toward destructive levels of judgmental conformism and perfectionism. The native seems to be constantly proving and re-proving his legitimacy and worth. Mandatory perfection comes with a deep-seated self-protection, itself a response to The Shani threat of being isolated, ostracized or abandoned.

This pattern of working unusually hard to earn one's place in the family, business, and society can be seen in all Shani-rising nativities at all stations in life. Perhaps the native is driven to excel in a particular area of knowledge, a particular set of commercial skills, or a particular moral behavior.

Any type of work will be done well by this native.

However their sorrow is that they will never be good enough. Their underlying fear prevents them ever being fully satisfied, or fully grateful, toward any material accomplishment. Their work is never done.

Socially identified with matters such as calendaring and scheduling; the timing of events; and managing matters of age. Has senior status or expertise due to life experience. Casting His harshest 3rd and 10th aspects upon administration (3) and career (10) with 75% impact upon marriage/agreements (7) Shani restricts and delays the attainment of self-made wealth, administrative projects, and leadership prestige.

It's important to appreciate that if supporting graha are strong the native may manifest considerable material success and achieve high position. But one will never be satisfied with these achievements, due to the underlying threat of scarcity, the fear that whatever they have achieved in somehow not enough. They need more praise, more laurels, more assignments, more tasks... even if their existing achievement are formidable, this native must continue to earn further distinction.

No help from the marriage partner. Siblings are a burden in youth, not an asset. A positive 3rd-house would show healthy competition with siblings/cousins which builds communication skills and confidence to take risks later in life (courage). Malefic Shani aspect to 3 shows native is risk-averse, has negative expectation of successful competition. Also negative expectation of love in marriage, and negative expectation of dignity in career.

Person pulls resources into his/herself; lacks initiative for business. Self-reliant, independent, and lonely.

Parashari drishti to domains: 4, 8, and 11.

Restrains and delays: completion of education, acquisition of landed properties (4); spouse's money, shocks, emergencies (8); and gains of income, development of friendship networks (11).

Shani does not permanently prevent ; rather, Shanaicarya delays and frustrates.

Barring help from other more fruitful drishti to 4, and 11, Shani's negative expectations often retard the acquisition of both fixed assets (4) and liquid money (2); in addition Shani restricts the spousal wealth (8) and limits the personal income.

Neechcha Shani-Mesha-2, for Meena lagna, is not as difficult as it might look. Shani will own and aspect Makara domain-11, while L-11 Shani enters domain-2, creating a dhana yoga. The most difficult position for Shani-2 =

  • The native's lifetime acquisition of knowledge or wealth may be delayed.

Habits of savings and accumulationare resistant to change. The native who wishes to change one's bank accounts, food behaviors, knowledge of history and language, and most importantly the culture of the family of origin, will find such a project to be slow-going and demanding much time.

Try as one might to change the package of attributes, one's historic valueswill persist.

Good results: the face, hair, eyes, mouth, voice will change very little over time. One may have a surprisingly youthful appearance as a result. This native looks old or world-weary (Shani) in the first part of life, but because Shani resists change, one may look surprisingly "timeless" in elder years.

Yogakaraka Shani in 2 (for Thula and Vrishabha lagna) does not alleviate the financial limitations.

Karmic resistance to accumulations is as high for yogakaraka Shani as for any other designation of Shani. Rather than bring wealth, yogakaraka Shani - the karaka of Systems -- enforces A study of Systems of Value.

Until this study is completed, finance creates Shani-driven anxiety.

  • Shani in 2 for Thulalagna may promote lifelong development of intelligence (5) through continuous schooling(4). However Shani in Vrischika, the rashi of enemy Mangala, will struggle to regulate the savings behavior.

  • For Thula lagna, Shani the Regulator in dhana bhava will occupy the house of Mangala the Shock-Transformer. Much against His true nature, Shani is constantly interrupted by randhra-pati Mangala's demand for rejuvenation, reinventing, and ongoing core-identity change.

  • It is very difficult under these hostile circumstances for Shani to act according to His naturally slow-and-steady preferences. Shani is hard put to find a comfortable pace and so that He can gradually, regularly conserve resources.

  • Often the native with Shani-Vrishchika-2 will struggle long and hard with social expectations (Shani) regarding he necessity to save money as the recommended route to "security".

  • As always with Shani, time and moral maturity will light the path to truth. In middle age or later, the native will eventually come to understand that Shani utilizes domain-2 for the study Of value systems and not for the hard labor of building up material hoards.

  • For the yogakaraka Shani in 2, one's task is not to accumulate habitually and largely unconsciously, as would be Shani's preference were He able to function unmolested in domain-2. Rather, the yogakaraka Shani will enforce A study of wealth systems. Shani engages either the intelligence-schooling pair for Thulalagna, or the dharma-profession pair for Vrishabha for His karma-to-dharma purposes. Wealth is studied; value systems are comprehended; and if the academic skills are strong, systems of value will be defined for the benefit of one's students. Generally, Shani assumes the role of a teacher when He rules 4 or 9.

  • Very little can be saved and relatively little earned (drishti upon 4= owned properties, 8= spousal monies and 11=marketplace earnings).until after the study is completed. Income may sporadically peak during periods of L-11 Surya. However. Shani's drishti to Surya's labha bhava is unwelcome and unproductive, since Surya earns by personal genius not by plebian convention.

  • Therefore even when income is high, Shani finds ways to reduce total claim to wealth such as having the native quit a salaried job. As L-4, Shani can impose a grinding determination to use one's time and money for professional education, rather than save that money in the bank.

  • Shani for Vrishabha lagna may bring dharma wisdom regarding the protocols of religious worship (9) and a dignified public service career (10). But as for the Thulalagna, Shani is Shani. He restricts and restrains until the karma has been transformed into wisdom.

  • Although frustrating, this situation of the yogakaraka Shani in the house of money-wealth has an excellent long-term prognosis.

Example: Mohandas Gandhi

Financial and Knowledge Anxiety. Fear and worry regarding the knowledge inventory and accumulated wealth.

  • Must work to earn validation of the hoard.

  • Works to be fully approved, in compliance, and adjudged to be perfect under the rule of human law.

  • Yet survival fears based in past-life karma enforce the mandate to perform this work over and over again, until the ignorance is transformed into wisdom.

"Have not collected enough" syndrome.

Appearance and Social Identity

  • Shani prefers that matters of his residence should be modest, respectable, and regulated. In domain-2, Shani favors a conforming financial behavior, neither too much nor too little accumulated. However occasionally Shani in dhana bhava can indicate serious scarcity.

  • Since Shani is a friend of Shukra and in Shukra's house Shani becomes an architect, usually the face, eyes, mouth, and teeth are regularly spaced.

  • Facial features are slightly smaller perhaps than average but likely just average; other key qualities of the appearance will conform to the mainstream culture, enough that the native can blend into a crowd in one's own homeland.

Regular Meals, Small but Steady Money

Shani's anxieties can be tamed by arranging a regular savings programme which need not be and indeed should not be large. Shani in 2 requires regular meals - again not large necessarily, but absolutely regular. Shani is quite capable of fasting, but only by previous arrangement and never as a punishment or a shock.

Acquisition of any type of collection, whether food, money, art, music, real properties, of varieties of historical knowledge, must be paced. One glass of wine is lovely; two is completely enough; and three would be anathema to austere but pragmatic Shani.

Resistance and delay regarding money, knowledge, speech, and family of origin. The particular type of resisted knowledge will be indicated by the rashi and any companion graha.

Ironically, the native is so busy working and carrying public responsibilities that there is no time to save money or acquire knowledge.

Feeling pressured by Time (Shani) one will tend to work very hard but the mind sustains ignorance (Shani) of the values, habits, and cultural information necessary to acquire personal wealth.

When Shani is a yogakaraka or otherwise well disposed, He may permit (or enforce) the studies with can grant knowledge of theoretical economics or other scholarly financial perspective upon the function of wealth within society. Yet the native will due to unconscious habits regularly (Shani) sabotage one's own wealth acquisition by choosing to work instead of acquire. (examples: Karl Marx, Mohandas Gandhi)

he family of origin (2) will typically reinforce this wealth-ignorant behavior by emphasizing the value of work itself (Shani) in preference to the value of the pleasurable fruits of the work (Shukra).

If Shukra is also ill-disposed, the native may be completely incapable of handling money and be unable to acquire any form of material asset, including knowledge.

Such a person may be a great spiritual being but s/he will always be dependent on the generosity of others because one does not possess one's own material resources..

Distrust of money, fear of punishment from acts of speech, fear of food, suspicious of stored goods or values. Terror of death, deep subconscious fear of starvation. The family becomes a psychological burden. Needs to physically separate from the family of origin, often early in life.

Shani in domain-2 = a warehousing functionary who works the socially approved system of money and stored cultural values. This person must apply sustained effort with limited resources (Shani)oward the maintenance of historic lineage wealth, traditional cultural values and ancient knowledge.

Shani Drishti to 4: Home Life

  • One seeks a predictable, conventional home-and-school routine

Shani Drishti to 8

  • One seeks a predictable, safe, regulated approach to mysteries, magic, and catastrophic change

Shani Drishti to 11

One seeks a predictable, reliable, routine method of making gains in the marketplace. Typically a salary-earner, although much depends on graha within labha bhava. Even if the native is a very independent profiteer (e.g. via strong Surya or Kuja in 11) there is an underlying requirement for some portion of the income to be gained on a regulated basis, as a common worker earning one's salary 'salt'.

The native typically has very basic (food-2) survival anxiety which is best addressed by ensuring that the survival costs are met using payments from the government (Shani) or other large, tightly regulated-hierarchies.

Difficulties with Hoarding

In dhana bhava, Shani's sense of social duty and safety for survival acquires Shukra-like Acquisitive characteristics; yet the approach to accumulation and storage is fundamentally stubborn, persistent, conservative and slow.

  • The native tends to carry a heavy load of responsibility for wealth and knowledge hoarding.
  • One takes a sober and practical approach to a long roster of acquisition and storage tasks in this lifetime.
  • Accessing and accumulating the hoards is difficult is difficult.

Karaka agents of domain-2 such as bankers, knowledge-providers, and the family of origin may be intractable or unsupportive. The native works very hard to acquire knowledge of history and languages, sensual luxuries such as fine foods and wines, wealth in coin, and collections of beautiful objects.

Repetition and Diligence in Matters of Acquisition

Wealth acquisition does succeed in Time, with many delays, because Shukra's dhana bhava is a hospitable territory for Shani. However there are numerous setbacks to be expected and matters of the two houses ruled by Shani must be repeated many times before the material results can be obtained.

Shani's workload of wealth-building often involves managing collections, studying historical traditions, and extremely conservative financial behaviors.

Speech and Language

Based on rejection from the family or a simple lack of comfort from them, one may be prone to speak negatively regarding the failings of one's own family members.

Some difficulties or maturation required before obtaining clear and easy speech. Initially speech is vulgar, cramped, foreshortened, or difficulty in expressing through language. May struggle to express successfully in the tongue of a foreign land, or be professionally responsible for expressing difficult concepts. (If Shani is dignified, success after much effort in language comprehension and speech.)

he key to success will be Shani's traditional simplicity. Shani-controlled speech is traditional , conventional, plain, and direct, with little poetic nuance or literary grace.

If Shani owns good houses (Thulaor Vrishabha lagna in particular) or if His lord is auspicious, Shani's speech is straightforward, well-defined, easy to understand and elegantly simple.

Native has burdensome responsibilities for speaking/singing/telling historical tales: it feels like work. Does not harm writing or hearing - only speaking. If Shani is not well disposed, the native is not gracious of speech -- unless helped by drishti of benefics.

(correction of speech/language difficulties when Shani = yogakaraka or Budha = uchcha)

As always, better results for Thulaand Vrishabha lagna, and better results with any type of support from Shukra.

Money and Values Collections

  • In childhood there is a persistent sense of scarcity; he collection of goods and values, whether food in the pantry or money in the bank, is perceived to be dangerously insufficient.

  • In adulthood, native has chronic worries and heavy responsibilities for acquisition and storage of values to be passed to the next generation.

Financial behaviors are fundamentally stubborn, persistent, conservative and slow.

he scale of worrisome duties may be small or large.

  • One may be concerned with the declining fortunes of an extremely wealthy family e.g. Prince Charles.

  • One may be obsessed with the values management habits of a great civilization , e.g. Karl Marx . In addition to developing a remarkable political philosophy of capital, Marx suffered persistent worry about his own family coffers.

  • If Shani is unfavorable, one tends toward a life of resistance to hoarding which causes material austerity and even poverty.

    • For the Thulanative like Mahatma Gandhi one may obtain a great spiritual wealth if yogakaraka Shani replaces a money hoard with a fund of knowledge .

    • Yet even this blessing is delayed. Shani creates resistance and retardation of the acquisition of essential knowledge. One may acquire non-essential technical information in abundance (including the specialty craft skills of domain-3) according to Budha, but the pearl of true value comes only with age.

    • In particular, knowledge about one's family of origin, and one's lineage history , may be delayed until old age.

he greater minds will accept responsibility for stripping down the values transmission to the core meanings, removing the meaningless, inappropriate, or distracting accruals from the present cultural asset hoard, and passing along a more essential, more traditional , and more structurally sound package of values to the next generation ( Gandhi , Karl Marx).

Whether one earns well or not, the psychic inheritance of the family culture which does fear money (whether the family could ever admit that or not!) makes it very difficult to save money or accumulate much in the way of hoarded assets. Even when Shani is favorable, the "savings accounts" and food-stores are much reduced.

As always, better results for Thulaand Vrishabha lagna, and better results with any type of support from Shukra.

When Shani/2 brings wealth: for Mesha and Meena lagna, Shani becomes lord of dhana bhava. For Mesha and Meena, Shani creates a Dhana yoga = L-11 in dhana bhava.

Family of origin

  • Family culture is conservative to the point of oppression. Uncomfortable and unpopular in one's own family. Family members are unsupportive and their demands become burdensome, either psychically or physically.

  • During Shani periods, separation due to repressive or ignorant actions of family members.

  • One may feel pressed into service by one's own family, burdened by demanding work schedule with little positive reward, or be forced to turn to outsiders for basic sustenance, whether physical or emotional.

  • For Thulaor Vrishabha lagna, Shani = yogakaraka, and Shani in domain-2 will provide a fortune of intelligence and accomplishment. Yet resistance to hoarding behaviors such as savings account, retirement plans, etc remains strong. If Shani in a hostile rashi, deep distrust of the motives and actions of the family of origin, yet unable to defend oneself against them.

  • As always, better results for Thulalagna and Vrishabha lagna, and better results with any type of support from Shukra.

Food

  • Shani, the force of austerity. One tends to eat preserved foods, low quality or poorly prepared food, or eat a poverty diet .

  • The native (consciously or unconsciously) chooses the least costly foods, the commonest and most basic foods, conservatively traditional cultural foods.

  • One feels obliged to adopt a diet of economical dried (Shani) foods (usually starches, Shani, stiffness) and with less entitlement to expensive protein-food (blood, Mangala).

  • Religious fasting Or eating a very restricted, principled diet, are good choices. Dark-blue or dark-purple color vegetables are greatly beneficial.

When yogakaraka Shani occupies domain-2 in Thulalagna, fasting And voluntary poverty become powerful tools for achieving social balance.

  • Kuja rules domain-2 and domain-7, creating a single-ruler relationship between *control* (Vrischika) over food/intake and achieving social agreements (i.e., "death of conflict", 2nd-from-6th)..

  • Cf. Mahatma Gandhi's skillful use of fasting as a method of "killing" or "saturating" the repeating arguments underlying chronic social conflict.

Restrains access to a settled home life.

  • Drishti to domain-4 = restrictions on buying a home, access to homeland/roots, to landed properties, settling permanently. Native moves about frequently, trying to accumulate capital, but is frustrated in this pursuit.

Reduced spousal wealth, reduced community and marketplace

  • Drishti to domain-8 = difficulties in marriage settlement, poverty from death of spouse, much effort to accumulate joint assets in marriage.

  • Drishti to domain-11 will restricts the number and quality of friends and limit mobility in the marketplace, making one's skill-set ineffective in the current economy.

  • Poverty limits the social circulation.

ypical mistakes due to past-life karmic ignorance

  • Mistakes will tend to be made repeatedly and a long-term burden carried, in the area of accumulation of wealth, acquisition of knowledge (particularly knowledge of history and languages), continuation of family lineage values (including perpetuation of bloodlines) and matters of bodily speech, song, facial features, hair, and teeth.

  • Shani in domain-2 tends toward moderate progress in the task of learning from one's mistakes. Speed depends on whether Shani occupies a hospitable rashi.

  • Once the early mistakes are corrected , the native institutes a new routine, and surprising financial and knowledge-acquisition success begins to attend the one who seemed earlier to be unable to accumulate or hoard collections of value.

  • Physically and Socially impoverished in Youth. the family of origin is crushed by duties; the child's nourishment [2, mouth] and values knowledge are reduced and delayed. Shani-2 is particularly associated with un-nourishing food .

  • After the age of 31 (past the first Saturn Return) the native will see better results from matters of the houses ruled by Shani.

    • Paramahamsa Yogananda = Shani-Kanya = L-7 [alliances and supportive agreements] - L-8 [acquisition of tantric knowledge, access to mysteries]

    • Theodore Roosevelt = Shani-Karkata = L-8 [hidden sources of information, secret alliances, conditions of death] - L-9 [world travel, philosophical wisdom, global viewpoint ]

"Q. 124:

In Bhavartha Chandrika, it is said that Saturn in 2 makes one Afool And a villain.

According to Bhargava Samhita, Saturn in 2 makes one learned.

How do you reconcile these two statements?

Ans.

"Ancient authors generally emphasize different aspects of the question in their own way. According to Bhavartha Chandrika, Saturn, if weak and afflicted, makes one a fool and a villain. If he is strong and well aspected, he makes one learned. Saturn, a malefic by nature, can become a benefic by position and strength.

In such seemingly contradictory statements, we have to be guided by the explanation given by other authors. In Skanda Hora for instance, it has been specially stated that Astrong Saturn is not evil but capable of doing good. Saturn gives good Raja Yogas in certain positions. "~~ B.V. Raman. (1992, 4th ed.). ACatechism of Astrology. Part I, p. 100

Effects

Some difficulties or maturation required before obtaining properties (4) and marketplace gains (11). Spouse's wealth (8) is slightly restrained or delayed. Shani in 2 restricts native's basic educational values, marriage assets, and social networks.

The birth family's values are deficient or very conservative. Long separations from the birth family. In frustration with the narrow limitations of the birth family, the Shani-2 native create motivation to associate with a non-blood family.

  • Cf. Paramahansa Yogananda, who created a new and much more beneficial family through his guru, Shri Yukteswar.

Domain-2 represents the family of origin.

Dom-4 = parents, primary nurturers

Shani occupying domain-2 connotes that the family lineage, the values and historic values-based practices of the family, will exhibit a quality resistance and delay regarding truth. Fear, usually the fear of public criticism, prevents the family culture from handling the task of truth-telling in a direct and straightforward fashion.

In addition there are usually money troubles in the family, which have a similar origin. Typically there is no family capital available to be developed by the children, and indeed the native may need to spend his own capital maintaining some family members in later life.

If Shani occupies a hostile rashi (Mesha, Simha, Vrischika) one is fundamentally alienated from the family. Family culture may induce hypocritical lying, historical revisionism or cover-up in defense against being attacked or judged. Family finances are strained during upbringing, creating a culture of miserliness And fear. The native may be forced to leave the family in early youth, due to lack of resources. Native exhibits inherited, ineffective, financially dysfunctional time-management behavior (Shani = Time) which is the source of the financial insufficiency.

If Shani occupies a neutral or friendly rashi, the native may exhibit lifelong frugality due to an austere upbringing, but one will be capable over time of learning the basic financial skills and achieving modest accumulation. The family are not easy to live with, but over time the mature adult learns a neutral approach.

If Shani is swakshetra or uchcha (Kanya, Dhanau, or Makara lagna) despite austerity in family of origin, strong moral culture of work ethic and tremendously effective time management can evoke Shani's power to give strong results over time. Improving the situation requires much disciplined attention to the task, such as training in speech improvement, resetting the teeth or jaw, and learning money skills

Domain-2 represents traditional knowledge and cultural values.

The native must work very hard to obtain knowledge. Family does not support one's education. Many returns to school, often with chronic interruption of family or financial demands. Learns mainly the hard way, by repetition and humility. Whatever knowledge one is trying to master requires a lifetime of study, yet the family values do not honor scholarship.

Shani's drishti to domains 4, 8, and 11 indicates that the knowledge one seeks is constrained by slow or interrupted progress in socialization levels of education, hunger for but limited accessibility to occult knowledge, and constrained speech leading to reduced community support.

As always with Shani, the hostile rashis (Mesha, Simha, and Vrischika) provide the greatest difficulties. Most other rashi placements are manageable with mature improvement over time.

Also for yogakaraka Shani (Thulaor Vrishabha lagna) the native may acquire considerable knowledge

ypical mistakes due to past-life karmic ignorance

Mental Anxiety. Fear and worry regarding the sibling-team and communication output.

  • Must work to earn validation of the mentality. Works to be fully approved, in compliance, and judged perfect under the rule of human law.

  • Yet survival fears based in past-life karma enforce the mandate to perform this work over and over again, until the ignorance is transformed into wisdom.

"Have not reported enough" syndrome.

  • The native's lifetime communication skills may be reduced or retarded.

Habits of giving instruction, explaining things, making announcements, and having conversationsare resistant to change. The native who wishes to change one's style of communication or speed ofpublication of materials, will find such a project to be slow-going and demanding much time.

Try as one might to change the package of attributes, one's depressed and delayed mentality will persist.

Good results: the hands, arms, and shoulders will change very little over time. One may have a surprisingly youthful appearance in these body parts as a result. These parts look old or world-weary (Shani) in the first part of life, but because Shani resists change, they may look surprisingly "timeless" in elder years.

Shani in domain-3 = an Administrative functionary who works the socially approved system of collaborative mentality and daily business procedures.

Siblings, daily conversations, and administrative process are fundamentally stubborn, persistent, conservative and slow.

his person must apply sustained effort with limited resources (Shani the worker)oward the maintenance of day-to-day mundane communications, meetings and plans, writing and thinking, and the technology which supports group interactions.

Some difficulties or maturation required before obtaining good fortune and 'wins' (5 and 9). Worry due to blocked access to meditation/prayer (12). Shani's extreme sobriety can produce mental-emotional depression in house-3 of mental process.

Upachaya house and Shani is friend of natural lord Budha = Maturity and self-discipline, over time, will correct these early frustrations and give long-term success. Good results after the second Shani return at approximately age 60..

All good results from Shani must wait for the fullness of time, but drishti of malefic to dusthamsha domain-8 is generally beneficial.

Distrust of siblings-cousins, children, the father, and one's own dreams. Depressive mentality. Negative expectations. Worst-case thinking, suspicious of the motives of neighbors, teammates, and co-workers. Uncomfortable and unpopular in small groups such as corporate departments and sports teams.

Better if Shani occupies a rashi of Shani, Shukra, or Budha. Better with any type of support from Shukra ( Pitt, Jobs, Reeve, Bush, Welch).

ypical mistakes due to past-life karmic ignorance

  • Mistakes will tend to be made repeatedly and a long-term burden carried, in the areas of , siblings, group communications, media production skills, writing, scripts, publications, advertising, public relations, communication devices of all kinds, self-made wealth, conversations , and articulation of narratives.

  • Shani in domain-2 tends toward moderate progress in the task of learning from one's mistakes. Speed depends on whether Shani occupies a hospitable rashi.

  • Once the early mistakes are corrected , the native institutes a new routine. Then, surprising success in group collaboration and public relations begins to attend the one who seemed earlier to be unable to communicate effectively.

  • Less fluent in sibling interactions, writing and conversation as a Youth. A younger sibling may be particularly burdensome.

  • After the age of 31 (past the first Saturn Return) the native will see better results from matters of the houses ruled by Shani.
The se men enjoy strong positions of Shani-3:

    • Jack Welch was too rational and scientifically complex in his early group communication style. He had to streamline his style of making announcements, develop teams, and learn how to run a business meeting. = Shani-Kumbha = L-2 [speech, money, values] - L-3 [self-made wealth, meetings, public relations, business administration]

    • Brad Pitt= was not raised by entertainers. He had to learn standard procedures in the communications media business, including basics such as managing theatrical scripts. Shani-Makara = L-3 [self-made wealth, meetings, public relations, business administration] - L-4 [education, cultural customs ]

Effects

"No rest for the weary". Anxious mentality, due to blockage on amusements (5) and religious rituals (9) and personal prayer/meditation/dreams (12). Rigid thinking. No easy release for worries. Materialistic mentality, creates depression.

Shani in 3 reduces mental health and positive ambition. Causes depression/anxiety set in a "worst-case-scenario" set of expectations stemming from difficulties with siblings in childhood. Feels pressure to conform in communicative style.

Beneficial for traditional crafts and formal thought which improves with practice, e.g., writing in formal styles, mastering social registers of speech and behavior, playing musical instruments, handling utensils.

The immediate younger sibling is likely to be quite troublesome. Teamwork is demanding, with the native shouldering excess workload. Children are constrained by time or lack of resources, due to Shani's drishti upon domain-5 and domain-9.

Resistance and delayor blockage to hands or hearing. Native feels lifelong pressure to conform to traditional or lowest-common-denominator social practices.

Security Anxiety. Fear and worry regarding the school, home, parents, and place of belonging.

Must work to earn validation of the cultural roots.

  • Works to be fully approved, in compliance, and judged perfect under the rule of human law.
  • Yet survival fears based in past-life karma enforce the mandate to perform this work over and over again, until the ignorance is transformed into wisdom.

" Not grounded enough " syndrome.

  • The native's lifetime emotional security and schooling may be reduced or slowed down.

Habits of completing educational studies, obtaining title to lands and vehicles, and laying foundations of all kindsare resistant to change. The native who wishes to change one's methods of securing shelter, a vehicle, or a diploma, will find such a project to be slow-going and demanding much time.

Try as one might to change the package of attributes, one's fixed resistance to change will persist.

Good results: although the home is not glamorous, if Shani occupies a good rashi, His kendra position in 4 is auspicious. The native does not shift house too frequently. There is stability if not prosperity in the childhood home. Elite education may be prevented, but a solid government-supported (Shani) education will be provided. There is stability in the ethnic culture, and sturdy common roots in the land of birth.

Karmic responsibility to attend to the foundations and shelters of life.

  • Sustained hard work is required with elderly parents, insufficiently resourced schools, poor homes and those who live in them, poorly functioning vehicles ( Laura Bush , manslaughter car accident).

Transits

  • When gochara Shani moves across the fourth house from lagna (material) or from Chandra (emotional) one has a sense of having "hit bottom".

  • Approx once every 29.3 years, there is a karmic obligation to return to the basics, the roots, the foundations of one's life.

  • Often, the native is obliged to work on home maintenance or home repairs, or to leave the home, or the home becomes a lonely, isolated place due to "empty nest" syndrome.

  • he best remedy, when Shani affects domain-4, is to go back to school .

Education

Gives reasonably education good results for the native, who is disciplined and conformist in approach to basic schooling (so long as Shani is not in a hostile rashi , such as Madonna or Ernest Hemingway).

If Shani is well-disposed, one serves as = a social authentication functionary who works the socially approved system of ethnic legitimacy, education, and property ownership. This person must apply sustained effort with limited resources (Shani)oward the maintenance of social and emotional security entitlements such as land and vehicle ownership, licensing and diplomas, regulation of ethnic boundaries, and patriotic defense of the motherland.

he early childhood home, indoctrination levels of education, property and vehicle acquisition, identification with the mother's cultural roots, and patriotic behaviors are fundamentally stubborn, persistent, conservative and slow.

Some difficulties or maturation required before obtaining emotional stability (4) health (6) and self-image (1); also restrains career (10). Scarcity and restraint leading to some type of poverty in the early childhood home (may be emotional, material, mental, or spiritual poverty).

The parents are deeply conservative, isolated, disciplinarians or are absent. One's sense of ethnic belongingness derives mainly from being a worker, and one may feel alienated from the land of one's birth. Deep appreciation for the experience of those who lack food, clothing, and shelter.

Shani gains dignity in kendra and Shani is a welcome guest in the natural house of Chandra. This native has a strong work ethic and is respected for maintaining regular habits.

Slow progress in administrative roles with many setbacks and getting pushed down into menial roles or asked to do repetitive work or being consistently underpaid.

Conservative mental outlook, framed as "low expectations of others". Expects to do the lion's share of the work in any team.

Deep frustration in the mental process. The mind moves very slowly. Works hard for their right to participate in meetings and conferences with decision-makers. Takes on secretarial tasks and other humble service. Great deal of writing in this life, much of it in vain or not receiving the recognition it deserves.

If other factors improve things such as drishti from benefics, the discipline for writing and slow laborious thought process will remain. However the native may receive due recognition for their dedicated administrative communications and production-planning service -- over time.

Early responsibilities in the childhood home, often due to loss or disability of the mother. Childhood home and parenting tend toward scarcity and strictness.

Education is delayed. Self-education will succeed over time (if the native lives long enough).

ypical mistakes due to past-life karmic ignorance

  • Mistakes will tend to be made repeatedly and a long-term burden carried, in the area of property ownership, patriotic actions, education, emotional and physical protection, and understanding the cultural customs of peoples.

  • Shani in kendra has a high rate of success in the task of learning from one's mistakes.

  • Once the early mistakes are corrected, the native institutes a new routine, and surprising emotional success begins to attend the one who seemed earlier to be unable to root and ground into a secure habitation.

  • After the age of 31 (past the first Saturn Return) the native will see good results from matters of the houses ruled by Shani.

    • Elizabeth Taylor = Shani-Makara = L-4 [childhood home, parenting] - L-5 [celebrity, perfection of theatrical craft, birth of children]. Ms. Taylor suffered lifelong emotional struggle due to harsh early parenting with conditional love granted on basis of material performance. Producing children was also a performance expectation given the cultural customs of the day. Ultimately she came to a peaceful inner security.

Effects

Shani is comfortable in the house of Chandra. No serious harm is done when Shani occupies the bhava of life's foundations, early education, and primary caretakers. It is generally good that routines, conventional behavior patterns, and predictable expectations should structure and support the childhood experience.

Parents tend to be elder . The child is born when the parents have reached a (culturally relative) advanced age. One experiences one's parents as being 'older than normal'.As a result, the home life in childhood favors routine. The time schedule is important, calendars and 'deadlines' are emphasized, and the quality of early education is rather regimented and conventionalized.

  • If Shani is at home, in Makara or Kumbha, or Shani is exalted in Thula, the regimentation is beneficial to the native as it provides a foundation of disciplined action and awareness of the impact of Time upon all life processes.

Distrust of the parents, who become burdensome to the native due to their conservatism or ignorance. The early childhood home suffers from material scarcity or a persistent fear of being uprooted which penetrates the psychic environment. Trouble getting or keeping properties, a feeling of exhaustion from working very hard to maintain a property or possession but losing it in the end due to an underlying fear. he parents and early teachers are oppressive and less nurturing, more they understand their duty to enforce the law rather than cultivate childhood happiness. Despite filial devotion to duty the parents and local community are resistant to improvement. They may seem committed to the path of ignorance as an expression of historic tradition.

Some difficulties or maturation required before obtaining financing (6) and bodily vitality (1) as well as prestige (10). Native must remain in their home base (4) because neither the physical energy (1) nor the loaned capital to expand their scope (6) are accessible. There is always a bright side to Shani aspects on dushthamsha houses, which restrict dealings with difficult people.

This person is hard to please because Shani in 4 restricts emotional contendedness. If such a person is in your life don't take it personally... there's nothing an outsider can do to alleviate their internal oppression.

When Shani aspects 6, money-lenders, thieves, apothecaries (6) and government officials (10) are kept away. Looks good, but this also means Resistance and delayto getting a mortgage for buying a house, being treated respectfully in public life, or receiving health care. Shani/4 folks lack a good home foundation (often absent mother) and expect to feel vulnerable, weak, ill, and unimportant.

Emotionally and socially insecure. If Shani rules a good house then the sense of vulnerability might produce a good career in specialties of making others feel sheltered, such as teaching young children or regional political leadership. However the health and scarcity implications are always there.

Better if Shani occupies a rashi of Shani, Shukra, or Budha. Better with any type of support from Shukra

No Fun Allowed

Shani in 5 is the very Antidote to Surya's autocratic, confident, creative intelligence.

When Shani occupies the natural house of games and entertainments, one general has very little amusement in life. Theatre, politics, and creative literature lose their pleasure quotient and instead become responsibilities of the working professional life.

  • Entertainment, creative performance: Shakira has the easier Makara placement; therefore her creativity style is well-fitted to the expectations of corporations and governments. However similar to Winston Churchill , Shani will not fail to deliver a heavy workload in the literary and performance arts. Shakira signed a 10-year contract to produce or purchase a fixed amount of lyrics, and to perform a rigorous concert schedule around the world.

  • Literature and fine-art painting: Rabindranath Tagore had the difficult placement of Shani-Simha.

  • Winston Churchill had the easier Makara placement; after a somewhat frustrating career in war journalism, and a very demanding era as Prime Minister, Churchill chose to write mainly about History and Government. While the workload arising from the mountains of factual detail and careful analysis of it was no doubt heavy, Shani's concern with Time and Law was satisfied and thus conflict regarding creativity is reduced.

  • Politics-entertainment: Ronald Reagan was famously beholden to large, wealthy corporate interests during his entire career.

One rarely experiences true autocracy; one rarely gets to do precisely what one wants to do. Social safety, and the interests of large corporations, institutions and governments must dominate the experience of creative performance.

Much as one may love one's children, the child-raising style is tightly structured, children's activities create burdensome time schedules, and raising them to adulthood is a heavy responsibility.

Performance Anxiety. Fear and worry regarding the Theatrical or political stage.

Must work to earn validation of the individual genius. Works to be fully approved, in compliance, and judged perfect under the rule of human law. Yet survival fears based in past-life karma enforce the mandate to perform this work over and over again, until the ignorance is transformed into wisdom.

" Not brilliant enough " syndrome.

  • The native's lifetime creativity may be heavily routinized or tightly contained.

Habits of creating from personal genius, giving birth to brilliant little human beings, and general entitlement to be in the bright center of things are resistant to change. The native who wishes to change one's style of romance and literary intelligence, will find such a project to be slow-going and demanding much time.

Try as one might to change the package of attributes, one's heavily regulated schedule will continue to deny adventure.

Good results: the hands, arms, and shoulders will change very little over time. One may have a surprisingly youthful appearance in these body parts as a result. These parts look old or world-weary (Shani) in the first part of life, but because Shani resists change, they may look surprisingly "timeless" in elder years.

Perfectionism in Creative Pursuits

Shani brings psychological perfectionism wherever He goes, and when He goes into the realm of performance arts (including child-raising) He brings a karmic emphasis on accomplishment and completion to that house.

Perfectionism and very high standards toward children, romance, creativity, genius, performance arts, politics, gambling, games and amusements. May result in severe performance anxiety even when the native is sincerely gifted ( Marilyn Monroe). The particular type of resisted amusement will be indicated by the rashi and any companion graha.

"Resistance to amusement" results in the need to limit whatever "fun" is available in life to games, children, and genius expressed mainly in the context of work. The creative behaviors, such as they are, become highly structured. (Great for architects and design engineers.)

Speculative developments in finance and investment, creative expressions in literature, theatre and politics, relationship to children, and emergence of knowledge of divine intelligence is fundamentally stubborn, responsible, conservative And slow.

Ironically, the native is so busy working and carrying public responsibilities that there is no time to enjoy the entertainments and celebrations of life. Not a fun person to be around. Extremely conservative and responsible toward children.

Children become a significant material responsibility. (If Shani is ill-disposed, children become a genuine burden.) Delay in producing children due to worry (Shani) about lack of TIME (Shani) to raise them. Love Romance, when it occurs, is Oppressed by heavy material responsibilities and social obligations.

Creativity may be expressed only in tightly controlled, socially validated channels.

Good position for an architect, arts administrator, stage manager, theatrical planner and organizer. Benefits those who must carefully manage expressions of theatre, art, politics and children's creativity, in order to maintain conservative control over the forward path of human genius

= an "intelligence functionary" who works within the socially approved system for regulating individual creative expression and speculative ventures. This person must apply sustained effort with limited resources (Shani) oward the maintenance of conditions supporting the literary, artistic, theatrical, political, philosophical and other speculative genius that spearhead the advance of civilization.

Some difficulties or maturation required before obtaining agreement in marriage (7), community/ fruit-attainment (11), and the family lineage (2).

Better results from a late or delayed marriage (due to Shani drishti on domain-7).

Much preparation and applications of research toward profitable actions in the marketplace (11).

Great effort expended in the task of educating oneself about world history. Work on cultural histories and ancient legacies of value (financial, philosophical, linguistic, musical, aesthetic), and the lineage record-keeping of one's people (2).

Deep sense of responsibility for children.

Better if Shani occupies a rashi of Shani, Shukra, or Budha. Better with any type of support from Shukra

Effects

When Shani/5 brings good fortune: for Vrishabha and Mithuna lagna, Shani becomes lord of dharma bhava. For Vrishabha and Mithuna, Shani/5 creates a Dhana yoga that is generally auspicious not only for money but other varieties of wealth as well = L-9 in putra bhava.

G enerally distrust of children and artistic creativity. Negative expectations regarding the outcome of the child-conception, child-birth, and child-raising processes. Difficulty in conceiving children, or heavy expenses in their upbringing. Much physical and moral work involved in raising children, focused inordinately on discipline, inculcation of responsibility and reinforcement of routine. A sober and suspicious view of creativity in general, expressing an aesthetic preference for strict lines, austere forms, and cold space. Imposes the law of the majority upon the tastes of the minority. May be a gifted engineer or clean-up agent in environments where amusement , frivolity, or personal uniqueness have become overgrown.

Bodes poorly for life's social relationships. Shani casts His harshest 3rd and 10th aspects upon marriage/agreements (7) and networks of friendships (11), plus the lesser but still troublesome 7th aspect upon speech, wealth, samskara (2). The common ground in most relationships is duty and work. (Naturally if there are beneficial graha in 2, 7, or 11 the situation may be relaxed.)

One does not expect "lucky breaks", easy winnings, or happiness in romance. Negative expectations in these areas are generally met.

Restricts access to supportive marriage partner, community, and birth family. This person does not expect to flower easily. They expect to carry the burden in marriage, community and family. Low permission levels "Fun" and easy good fortune charismatic self-expression, including children and creative works.

Can prevent children entirely, but just as often will make children a major burden due to no help with child-raising from spouse (7), friends/community (11), or one's own birth family (2).

Shani the Taskmaster functions best in Makara, Kumbha, and Thula

Shani imposes regulated vertical (Makara) and horizontal (Kumbha) systems. Shani in Domain-6 = medical, conflict-management, And social service ministry systems (military and medicine).

Argument Anxiety. Fear and worry regarding servitude.

Must work to earn validation of the workplace efforts. Works to be fully approved, in compliance, and judged perfect under the rule of human law. Yet survival fears based in past-life karma enforce the mandate to perform this work over and over again, until the ignorance is transformed into wisdom.

" Not serving enough " syndrome.

  • Shani is capable of enduring long-term legal battles.[< strong>Anna Nicole Smith, legal suit for inheritance]

Shani in 6 gives workplace stress. Affects the physical body location according to the rashi. Tension and anxiety from dealing with servants and employees. "Human resources" issues in professional environments. Karmic effort required to manage (not resolve) problems with animals (6), medical service, the service class and underclass, management of scarce resources (Shani) oxicity and pollution, Animosity in the workplace.
Diseases of old age, of dryness, skin and nerve ailments, brittleness, exhaustion from chronic argumentation, loss of agreement with the social contract, persistently unresolvable conflicts, arguments with the government, class struggle.

Resistance and delay toward Animosity, debt, disease, argument, and social conflict.. The particular type of resisted conflict will be indicated by the rashi and any companion graha.

One has the karmic obligation o deal with enemies and ideas, relationships, or objects that are inimical to the self.

  • However if Shani is lord of a kona or kendra, the native may discharge this karma through professional service e.g. as a criminal attorney representing evil-doers, or as a minister of human service to the exploited and this dispossessed, or as a vendor of financial loans to the poor.

  • If Shani is a fortunate bhava-pati (as for Vrishabha, Mithuna, Kanya, Thula, Makara, and Kumbha lagna) the benefits from service to criminals, the underclass, and the disenfranchised (including dealings with the governments of very poor countries) can be substantial.

  • If in addition to Shani being a fortune house lord, the L-11 is also strong, there is no obstacle to the capability of one's professional service to generate material wealth.

The native is a hard worker who is busy carrying out service responsibilities.

One is rarely A social justice reformer. Rather, one works within the existing social structure, as unjust as that regulated system may be.

  • he attitude toward one's enemies, poverty, illness, exploitation, and perpetual dissolution of agreements between partners is fundamentally stubborn, persistent, conservative and slow.

  • One accepts the structural realit y of great masses living in poverty and ignorance which forms the huge base of the social pyramid.

Illness develops slowly

  • Shani/6 produces long-term, chronic and underlying, unrecognized imbalance (disease) which is indeed the material effect of long-repressed social-emotional conflict.

  • While employed, one generally has little time or inclination to fight or argue, either within one's own internal narrative or with other people.

  • The native is so heavily engaged with one's work on the material plane that most diseases, which have a psycho-emotional origin, are repressed. One literally does not have time to be sick.

  • he earlier working life before age 60 is so busy that early disease is rare.

  • Old age -- or retirement from service, even if young -- when most work-tasks are completed, may be a time of illness and animosity in relationships with individuals and with society as a whole. The native is grumpy.

Shani in domain-6 works the socially approved systems of static social imbalance, chronic crime, and habitual exploitation.

his configuration features a lifelong dedication to conflict management. May be perpetually involved in litigation and complaints of wrong-doing, whether as a law-maker, solicitor, social advocate, accuser, or party to the complaint.

his person must apply sustained effort with limited resources (Shani)oward the maintenance of drug and medical technology distribution channels, law courts and legal offices, police and military installations and code of conduct, jails and medical clinics, social welfare systems, and every form of crime.

The native displays a sober determination to accept imbalances and conflict as one finds them. One with Shani in domain-6 works within the system which perpetuates social injustice. Specifically NOT a karaka for eliminating or fundamentally changing the imbalances that one can perceive in personal relationships, society, or nature.

Shani in domain-6 conforms to the reality of conflict and accepts the fact of imbalance, working to make only small and socially acceptable changes in the big picture. Excellent for trial attorneys, social workers, medical professions, writers and observers of social reality, police/military, and unassuming people everywhere.

  • The native's lifetime argumentation skills may be reduced or retarded. In relationship disagreement (esp marriage) one will be forced to accept accusations toward oneself with or without merit.

Habits of reasoning and legal argumentation are resistant to change. The native who wishes to change one's style of working, which involves either hard labor or very long hours of task-performance, will find such a project to be slow-going and demanding much time.

Try as one might to change the package of attributes, one's mentality of servitudewill persist.

The elders (Shani) get sick and disabled (6) in old age, and one must accept responsibility for them.

Good results:

legal (Shani) argumentation (6) which should not change from the received cultural format, that is classically presented and austere but well-structured, is much favored in domain-6.

Architectural work with simple, elegant construction methods is also favored here particularly in very scarce-resource economies (Shani) and in dry or cold (Shani) climates.

Police work that is in fact social work, and ministries of service to impoverished but humble and pragmatic populations, are also much favored.

In relationships one may experience resistance toward explicit disagreement. There is no permission to fight in marriage. Existing awkwardness and imbalance of power within the marriage will remain unmitigated, without opportunity for adjustment within the lifetime.

Profession

Shani in favorable rashi = Karaka for a physician who manages disease, a divorce lawyer or marriage counselor who manages relationship conflict, police or military who manage social conflict, bank loan officer who manages financial insufficiency and indebtedness.

Mother Teresa offers a splendid example of "extreme" neechcha Shani in domain-6. Her famous commitment to serve the ostracized and destitute at their time of death was characterized by her fierce refusal to demand changes in the larger social system. Her mission was often criticized for its staunch acceptance of social inequalities which many perceived to be the cause of terrible poverty and disease of her beneficiaries. Yet the Mother's did not perceive her duty to lie in anything more abstract or complex than the simple act of providing a death with dignity.

Shani in domain-6 does NOT work to "change the system". Shani = work and hierarchies; domain-6 = service and health. Shani in domain-6 approaches hierarchies of good and hierarchies of evil with equal respect.

Shani is not a pioneer or a change-agent. Shani accommodates the social laws and customs which are in place at the time of the incarnation. Shani's interest first and foremost is the native's own security, established via one's rank and position in one's chosen hierarchy. Thus Shani in domain-6 will normally find a titled position within a profession, ideally supported by a large and well-defended hierarchy.

Some difficulties or maturation required before obtaining agreements in relationship to In-laws (8). Pressure on mental health/courage (3) and inner peace/prayer (12) due to a sense of scarcity of resources, most importantly not enough time.

Shani drishti from a negative sthana of domain-6, upon three negative sthana of domains 3, 8 and 12, has the fortunate effect of reduce-and-delay upon frenetic mentality (3), sudden forced changes (8), and loss of identity within the private imagination (12).

In youth, this native is restless and frustrated, seeking the company of vulgar associates and engaged in labor of servitude. In maturity, the native may come to understand one's karmic obligation to endure the dissolution of equality in relationships and the breakdown of contractual agreements. The mature native may be able to express the wisdom of Seva: to serve in the interest of compassion, with neutrality toward the lack of equity in one's material reward.

Communications

  • Cautious Shani in 6 is perpetually aware of the potential inherent in any type of communication to cause an argument or instigate litigation.

  • The communications are conservative due to Shani's strongest 10th drishti upon domain-3.

  • One is careful what one says and particularly careful what one writes.

  • Publications may become problematic as "the devil is in the details" (Shani), yet in the lifetime numerous carefully crafted reports are necessary (Shani).

  • Handwriting and tool-use may be studied, over-regulated, or even cramped.

  • Long-term ailments (6) affecting the hands (3), depending on the rashi of 3 and 6.

  • If in addition Shani casts drishti upon Budha, the effects are increased.

Shani in domain-6 in Mithuna, Behari says:

    • "Loss of health and money are predicted.

    • Some kind of criminal proceedings may be instituted against you."

Effects

Suspicious and distrustful of servants, physicians, police, and social workers. General dislike and negative expectations of social welfare systems and public health services.

Shani in a strong rashi (Thula, Makara, Kumbha) executes the Law toward the disagreeable, the sick, and the exploited, signifying responsibility for professional engagement with the great imbalances of life. The native may serve those with chronic problems in roles such as physician, attorney, or minister to the underclass.

Health, physical and emotional

Ironically, a distrust of doctors is often the key to lifelong health, and the native may completely avoid iatrogenic disease (sickness caused by physicians, medicines, and medical treatments) by aversion to the medical trade.

Nevertheless, Shani brings a personal karma of health problems, mainly to manifest in elder years or during mahadasha of Shani, dictated by the rashi of Shani. Mesha gives head-brain conditions (often a chronic headache); Vrishabha jaw-neck-teeth, Mithuna arms-lungs, Karkata stomach-glandular, Simha heart, Kanya intestines-digestion, Thulakidneys-pancreas, Vrischika sexual-urinary, Dhanau hips-sacral, Makara bones-knees, Kumbha nerves-skin, Meena feet-lymph.

In particular, sexual-emotional relationships become problematic as Shani enforces static imbalance in marital agreements. Appearance of chronic, repeating disagreements which are never resolved but become integrated into the fabric of marriage. These chronic complaints do not destroy the marriage unless Shani is L-7, in which case the prospect of a lasting marriage is dim.

Conflict

Similarly, keeping a suspicious distance from police and military agents can result in avoidance of confrontation. The native suffers very little oppression from agencies of conflict suppression, and one will in general stay out of the offices of litigious attorneys as well. One is engaged in chronic and habitual conflicts, usually those related to class structures or large-scale social customs, but one is not personally subject to exploitation or abuse by police unless other graha instigate personal involvement.

"Bad planet in bad house gives good results."

Good house for Shani! Reduces, slows, impedes all dushthamshas - which is a good thing! his person is one tough cookie. Not scared of enemies, debt, or disease. The native must work hard in this life on problems of a habitual, structurally embedded, and intractable nature. Very hard worker with a pragmatic and sober view of entrenched social conflict. One does not waste time looking for someone else to do their work for them or blame for mistakes. Deals perseveringly with the social underclass, environmental polluters, thieves, drug dealers and drug addicts, poverty and the poor, finance/usury/illegal monies/pyramid schemes. Negative expectations of police and military, accusatory litigation, corrupt officials, criminals and habitual cycles of victimization. These negative expectations are not disappointed!

Mental health is good

Emotional "Stress" in modern life is said to me measured by he gap between psychological expectation and material performance.

Shani in domain-6 shows the appropriate match between expectations (fixed negative) and reality (also fixed, negative). Shani-6 produces a very small opportunity for disappointment, which predicts low stress levels in life overall.

Shani-6 is generally a good-to-neutral indicator of sober but stable mental health, since the native is working with known problems toward which society generally encourages its members to have low expectations of resolution. Conflict and disagreement, illness and exploitation, are famously bad aspects of the human condition which the native with Shani-6 meets with a very reasonable set of negative expectations. The end result is a lifetime of practical, and potentially high-paying work (6 = 9th-from-10th) toward which work the native takes a dedicated but rather impersonal view.

Rarely disappointed by the poor behavior of others. Never shocked by selfishness, indecency, criminal acts etc. Often rises to respected position in organizations that handle accusations of wrong-doing or matters of the underclass (crime/poverty/illness) or chronic disease conditions. In maturity, earns respect due to one's senior experience in medicine, law, or finance.

Social service work, overly constrained by pressure to conform to the standards of the lowest-common-denominator. Karma obliges the native to work in conditions of static imbalance within medicine, finance, or enforcement of law.

Domain-6 is the relative 12th-house for marriage, so the spouse may be closed-minded about sexual expression or the native may not wish to articulate one's private desires and dreams within marriage. Association with prostitution, but perhaps in a clinical social service role.

This native deals with one's own sickness, accepts exhaustion, deterioration and heavy workload, then in maturity shows others the basic rules of health/illness. Showing others what they learned ,through exhausting repetition and failure of alternatives, is the source of their later-life respect.

Better if Shani occupies a rashi of Shani, Shukra, or Budha. Better with any type of support from Shukra

Das/Behari says:

... sexual problems. Sex will be a very unorthodox kind of experience for you, but out of it there may arise a realization of your spiritual nature. Deprivation of a normal sex life ... a tendency towards bizarre or unusual relationships enables you to secure special gifts from unexpected and unknown quarters which remove many personal difficulties. You may not always succeed in relating these two events, but both are impelled by Saturn.

You are not necessarily attracted towards an unusual expression of sexuality, but the problem of sex affects your mental body vitally ... in some peculiar manner reveals the mysterious aspects of human motivation. For better or worse, your personal life is vitally affected by these experiences.

You may suffer from some physical ailment without expressing your pain to others. Doctors may not succeed in treating you easily. Despite such personal anguish and sorrow, you enjoy great renown and social esteem. You may have trouble and hindrances in early life.

No help or support from any quarter. Much criticism. Little gain after much labor and effort.
rouble for maternal uncles and aunt. Gain through some income or employment. Premature retirement due to sickness. Economic hardships in old age. Wealth, authority and fame do not come all together.

You have to pass through many ailments beyond your control due to privation and want or neglect leading to sorrows and disappointments. Loss or trouble through attendants and menials; animals, accidents and operations, indigestion, circulatory problems, debility, diabetes or venereal diseases.

Brave and intelligent, powerful, fortunate, with plenty of pleasures, jewelry and conveyance, learned, rich and happy, free from enemies, favorite of the government, loving spouse and lucky sons. You have few relatives and brethren; annihilates your enemies; growing wealth. Blessed with some income or employment. Trouble through maternal uncles.

You are not scared of thieves, a strong controversialist and combatant. Gain through quadruped.

Known all over. Most generous, prosperous but not without some trouble. Fond of merit; noble, protector, with good appetite, strong and healthy.

Recognized by the enemies. Blessed with sons. Respect for the learned. Sensual, can face heavy odds. Plenty of attendants and followers.

Better results should be predicted if Shani occupies a rashi of Shani, Shukra, or Budha. Better with any type of support from Shukra.

= a legal functionary who works the socially approved system of contracts and alliances. This person must apply sustained effort with limited resources (Shani)oward the maintenance of systems of negotiation and arbitration, marriage and partnership arrangements, counseling and advising, crafting of alliances and treaties, and balancing mechanisms at every level of reality.

he attitude toward marriage contract, business partnership, agreements and the negotiating process is fundamentally stubborn, persistent, conservative and slow.

Native's marriage or life union requires sacrifice and personal discipline. Supports marriage to an older, socially conservative, rather plain, conventional, simple, or hardworking person. Much resistance, constraint and difficulty in things marital.

Some difficulties or maturation required before obtaining the blessings of wisdom/father (9) and security/mother (4) via the full 3/10 aspects whilst casting the 75% aspect upon body image/self (1).

Shani in domain-7 harms ALL of life's fundamental -childhood relationships of mother-father-self.

Traditionally, for females:

  • "If Saturn is in the 7th house and receives a aspect from malefics, she will remain unmarried, or she will become a widow and go to other men." ~~ Hora Sara, Ch. 25, Shloka 28-29

  • "If Saturn is in its own house in the 7th house or in the 7th amsha, gives old man and a dunce as husband." ~~ Hora Sara, Ch. 25, Shloka 40

For males,

  • In practice, Shani/7 is socially easier for a man. Possibly the ease is due to social acceptance of male promiscuity under pressure of a stressful or cold marriage at home. The male may need to express his Shani karma in the world of business alliances, or international contracts such as Fidel Castro feeling "not equal enough" in his (Cuba's) relationship to USSR.

For females,

  • Shani/7 = karaka for unequal first marriage and sometimes promiscuity as a result.

  • The native's lifetime opportunity for change and growth in relationships may be prevented or delayed. However marriage is very stable and divorce is highly unlikely (Shani in kendra).

Habits of bargaining and negotiation in contractual relationshipsare resistant to change. Marriage is not possible until after the conventional age (according to culture) has passed. Marriage counseling, labor contract bargaining, and other adjustments to alliances which might accommodate the changing needs of the partners, is slowed or prevented entirely.

The marital contract is fixed; therefore unless other factors (such as Kuja dosha) might interrupt Shani's tightly regulated conventional march of Time, the marriage persists by carrying a heavy burden of responsibility but divorce is not likely and in many cases not socially possible. If marriage is arranged, the spouse hails from a lower social class and has common habits..

The native who wishes to change the spouse's behavior, will find such a project to be slow-going and demanding much time.

Try as one might to change the package of marital attributes, the spouse's expectations are fixed.

Good results: the spousal appearance and behavior will change very little over time. The spouse may have a surprisingly youthful appearance as a result. This spouse looks old or world-weary (Shani) in the first part of life, but because Shani resists change, this one may look surprisingly "timeless" in elder years.

Effects

Distrust and suspicion toward the spouse, who may hail from a lower social class and whose equality to oneself seems doubtful. Dislike of the constraints of marriage, but these are grudgingly accepted in exchange for conjugal pleasures. The spouse is ignorant or intractable. In rashis of Shani, Shukra, or Budha, a deeper acceptance of the value of stability which is stronger than the oppressive constraint. In rashi of Guru, Kuja, or Surya, extreme Resistance and delayto the contractual bond, feeling of servitude to the spouse, or of being chained to someone below one's own status who suffers bad habits. Shani has special directional strength (dik bala) in house-7, but this "strength" is really His power to build character through endurance tests in marriage! The native has no expectation of unconditional love from mother, father, or self. S/he becomes a duty-performer, focused exclusively on conditional love/admiration from the broader society through role playing and material achievements. Minimal inspired love in the marriage, yet plenty of respect for a dignified partner who can follow the rules of committed partnership. Good material success due to dedication and work ethic of the partner. Emotionally it may be unbearably materialistic and duty-oriented, unless yuvati bhava receives softening drishti from a friendly graha.

Catastrophe Anxiety. Fear and worry regarding the sudden emergence of unknown forces.

Must work to earn validation of the transformation. Works to be fully approved, in compliance, and judged perfect under the rule of human law. Yet survival fears based in past-life karma enforce the mandate to perform this work over and over again, until the ignorance is transformed into wisdom.

"Not reborn enough " syndrome.

  • The native's capacity to move energetically though cyclical changes may be reduced.

Habits of regeneration and rehabilitation are resistant to movement. The native who wishes to change one's identity, increase one's knowledge of mysterious truths, or experience rejuvenating practices such as surgeries and shamanistic healing, will find such a project to be slow-going and demanding much time.

Try as one might to change the package of attributes, one's fear of the unknownwill persist.

Shani in either natural house of Mangala, 1 or 8, is undeniably difficult. The native resists birth (1) or rebirth (8) which takes the joy of movement out of the life. However Shani in 8 lacks the kendra-dignity of Shani in 1. Shani in 8 tends toward a lingering bitterness and resistance to that great engine of forward movement, forgiveness.

These natives often seem to be stuck in the past, clinging to old grievances or continuing to be defined by old trauma. They inherit a heavy legacy of responsibility and scarce resources, which causes a fear of change-for-the-worse.

Good results:

Similar to Shani in 7, Shani in 8 often indicates resistance to divorce. One may undertake supplemental "secret" relationships if Shukra or Mangala occupy or casts drishti upon domain-8. However marriage is generally fixed because the native believes that divorce has bad consequences. Few emergencies in this life.

Exceptions to the typical difficulties:

Shani-Vrischika in 8 may become a highly capable emergency manager, presuming that Mangala is well disposed. Other graha in 8 can facilitate trasnformation and reduce Shani's typical resistance considerably.

Shani in domain-8 gives significant resistance to the deepest levels of self-destruction and rebirth , which results in greater longevity for the current incarnation.

Better results should be predicted if Shani occupies a rashi of Shani, Shukra, or Budha. Better with any type of support from Shukra.

he attitude toward catastrophic change and secret, unpredictable upheavals is fundamentally stubborn, persistent, conservative and slow.

Karma of handling Other People's Money . Requires a steady acceptance of hidden and mysterious financial transactions. The native is rather obliged to participate in schemes which may involve bribery and money-laundering.

he in-laws of the first marriage are impoverished, ignorant, or their circumstances are much constrained by fear due to a strict and unforgiving regime (fear of punishment by religious, political, or family culture laws). Neechcha Shani in 8 delivers the karma of a notably dysfunctional in-law group.

  • For example, the family of Franklin D. Roosevelt's wife Eleanor Roosevelthad all sorts of high dysfunction, from sexually transmitted diseases to insanity to fatal alcoholism.

  • FDR also had Guru in 8 which helped to compensate for the problematic Shani.

  • Eleanor Roosevelt's family had a fancy lineage pedigree due to their being among the first (Mesha) successful Dutch merchants in New York, and the legacy prestige of her family considerably helped his ability to get political funding.

he first spouse will contribute much less wealth into the coffers of the joint assets of marriage than the native will contribute.

= an emergency-management functionary who works the system of secret information, intuitive healing, and catastrophic change. This person must apply sustained effort with limited resources (Shani)oward the maintenance of systems of emergency response to catastrophic events, transformative healings under forced circumstances, secret initiations, management of hidden information, and the mystery schools.

Some difficulties or maturation required before obtaining leadership prestige (10) and speculative luck/personal charisma (5) while also damaging wealth (2).

Raising children is a heavy responsibility, and children cause concern throughout life.

Imposes a heavy responsibility for using one's tantric awareness (magic, worldview shifts, psychic healing) and deployment of confidential information, in this life (8).

The native bears a heavy burden of secret knowledge, and if Shani is strong one becomes a governing agent in times of catastrophic change.

Effects

Overall, "a bad planet in a bad house" i.e. a malefic graha in a dushthamsha house, has some good implications. Shani/8 indicates a long lifespan and duties with surgery or medical emergencies. Often suffers catastrophic change requiring medical intervention. The native is blocked from access to magic or deep therapeutic change of any kind. Stores emotional pain in the physical body, and is forced therefore to deal with much physical trauma. Damages natural powers of rejuvenation; the person looks older than they are. Duty-oriented response to trauma is limited to caretaking and structural support;. V cannot explore the damage thus healing powers are restrained. There are benefits to restricting the occult implications and ego-destructive capabilities of the 8th house. The native is pragmatic in managing the conditions of death, does not fear death, and usually offers technical service in some transformative environment such as a healing center without being personally healed. If in business will make much profit for others without gaining themselves. No doubt they are somewhat nervous about the power of magic due to negative experiences in past lives. Permission to heal others but not oneself. Karmic trouble-spots include reduced spousal contribution to the joint assets of marriage and a negative or non-helpful experience of the partner's family (in-laws) who will hail from a lower social class than the native.

Enjoyment of social prestige (10), wealth (2) and children/charm/amusements/speculation (5) will be limited. Even if other planets give high intelligence, the native is tied to a practical, positivistic worldview which means very little spontaneous miracle in this life. Benefits include a strong work ethic and willingness to take the lion's share of responsibility in partnerships. Oppresses the joint assets of partnership.

Spouse contributes relatively little to the joint wealth. If good wealth yogas exist the native may build his own wealth the old-fashioned way, by hard work, and lots of it. Saturn eliminates the short-cuts to wealth but He rewards solid labor. Reduces permission for transformative change in this life; will be a hard worker but not willing to accept magical change.
Das says:
  • ... puts a powerful lid on past auspicious influences, forcing you to meet the everyday trials of life with no help from past karma.
  • Under such rigorous conditions you become bewildered, having been abandoned by relations, abused and tormented through no apparent fault of your own, and put to physical hardships which require great stamina to bear.
  • In some cases, finding your helplessness acute, you begin to seek pleasure through dissipation, though under favorable circumstances you may begin pursuing an Arduous spiritual path which, though it may not eliminate sorrow from your life, may reveal the deeper meaning that life and destiny awaits you after your period of trial.
  • Long life is indicated. You may live in a foreign land where being caught as a thief is punished. Much sorrow... friends avoid you. Quarrelsome, bilious. Death in a foreign place due to heart trouble, cough, cholera etc. You are sober but bold and fearless.
  • Children are cunning. ... contact with low class persons. Financial difficulties due to several restrictions. Unhappy dreams and death of father. ... keeps you alert till the last breath: gets premonitions, esp. if 4th or 5th house is occupied by malefics. A benefic in these houses will keep you unconscious in your last moments.
  • Fortune after 36. You are denied the company of virtuous and live with the lower persons.
  • Separation from your own people. Loss of wealth. Ailing; finding fault with others. Far from being generous, very narrow-minded.
  • Being crooked, no body can cheat you. You suffer great loss of wealth; sudden separation from own people; always perverse minded; very clever; scared of disease; ill-reputed. Lazy, glutton, miserly, kind and timid. Few children and weak sighted.

  • Shani the Taskmaster functions best in Makara, Kumbha, and Thula.

Wisdom Anxiety. Fear and worry regarding philosophical and religious teachings and teachers.

  • Must work to earn validation of priesthood.

  • Works to be fully approved, in compliance , and adjudged to be perfect under the rule of human law.

  • Yet, survival fears based in past-life karma enforce the mandate to perform this work over and over again, until the ignorance is transformed into wisdom.

"Not wise enough " syndrome.

  • Better results should be predicted if Shani occupies a rashi of Shani, Shukra, or Budha.

  •  Better with any type of support from Guru.

The attitude toward the father, ceremonial religion, the guru, universities, professors, and religious teachings is fundamentally lawful. Style of preaching and role-modeling of the principles of one's religion tends toward: stubborn, persistent, conservative and slow.

Resistance and delay toward wisdom, the guru and the father, religious teachings, ceremonies and rituals, and university culture.

The particular type of resisted wisdom will be indicated by the rashi and any companion graha.

Ironically, the native is so busy working that there is very little time to develop spiritual wisdom. The native's capacity to energetically, personally engage (Mangala) with wisdom teachings may be reduced by a heavy workload

  • Herbert Hoover was a devout Quaker in private practice and a vigorous exponent of Quaker principles in public life. Yet Hoover worked most days of his life from morning until night. His primary expression of Quaker belief was the sober lifestyle which undergirded his extraordinary work ethic.

  • Even in the noble case of Swami Vivekananda, religious teaching duties on the material plane were so ominous that little time was left to enjoy the pleasures of meditative awareness. Needing to attend to the material development of religious outreach organizations would have made serious a  detachment quite unavailable.

  • His time was taken by material responsibilities to the worldwide seekers of wisdom. He could not abandon his work in order to pursue his own spiritual interests.)

Habits of worship and philosophical discussion are resistant to movement. The native who wishes to move forward along the path of orthodox religion (9), taking vows and practicing ritual devotion to deities, will find such a project to be slow-going and demanding much time.

  • If Shani is not well disposed, may result in a sanctimonious expression of religious piety, based on materialistic ritual often strictly a public expression

  • reading of sacred texts is bound by received rules of interpretation

  • Try as one might to change the package of attributes, one's ability to pursue the priestly path is much impeded.

Better results

  • If Shani is well disposed (Swami Vivekananda Shani = lagnesha in 9) the religious authenticity is undeniably present,  but the privilege to enjoy it or even develop the philosophical skills is much reduced due to great responsibilities

  • Best results for Mesha lagna and Karkata lagna, from which Shani=9 will occupy a rashi of Guru.

    Good results:

    • Shani and Guru, the natural lord of dharma bhava, are neutral toward each other.

    • Therefore, over time, and with a suitably plodding and conservative style, one's dedicated study of religious texts and a careful development of pre-approved interpretations will yield a satisfactory amount of religious development.

    Grandchildren

    • Are delayed, or a significant material responsibility, or one may not live to see them

= a religious functionary who works the socially approved system of philosophical beliefs and liturgical process. This person must apply sustained effort with limited resources (Shani the worker) toward the maintenance of temples for religious worship, ritual practice, sacred scholarship, universities, and philosophical associations.

Some difficulties or maturation required before obtaining gainfulness. Shani delays or restricts friendship and marketplace associations (11).

Beneficial for restraining enemies (6) but also prevents or forces great discipline upon the mental processes esp. communications.

Restrains courage (3) delays but does not prevent income (11) and reduces animosity (6) . In general, forces patience.

Lots of trouble with enemies, debts, and disease during Shani periods, but this trouble is resolved through following the human law codes, workplace policies, and being neutral and modest. All good results from Shani must wait for the fullness of time, but drishti of malefic to dushthamsha is beneficial.

In general, Shani in domain-9 is a good position, because Shani drishti - the aspect of limitation and constraint - affects only "upachaya" houses. Upachaya houses *improve with time*. Therefore Shani in domain-9 is difficult for a young person, but Shani will give quite good results with Maturity.

Effects

When Shani/9 brings good fortune: for Thula and Kanya lagna, Shani becomes lord of putra bhava. For Thula and Kanya, Shani/9 creates a Dhana yoga that is generally auspicious not only for money but other varieties of wealth as well = L-5 in dharma bhava. Shani/9 can also be auspicious for Mesha and Meena lagna for which Shani = L-11; the eleventh lord in the ninth creates a dhana yoga.
Similar to Shani-in-6 but less immediately favorable. Shani in dharma bhava is reduces prosperity due to Shani's constrain-and-delay drishti upon the 11th house of gains/income.

Sober realism in matters of priestly education and ritual religion can produce a distrust of ceremonial pomp and resistance to self-serving displays of religious piety. Yet the native is quite able to appreciate the value of structured human-to-divine communication (9) and one gains a pragmatic knowledge of how to serve the people's need for connection to their gods.

Psychologically, one bears a deep tendency toward anxiety and worry about the authenticity of religious teachings, which is due to blockage upon access to the conventional socio-religious apparatus. The native is sincere in life, but karmic inheritance of ideas about material laws which emphasize scarcity (Shani) in place of abundance (Guru) and physical hard work (Shani) in place of faith and wisdom (Guru) can restrain overall prosperity no matter how much effort the native invests in his duties.

he trick is to develop a pragmatic faith based not on blind trust in childlike imaginings (Guru) but rather to appreciate the "the Lord helps them what helps themselves" -- in a sense, to meet the Divine half-way. Past-life resistance to faith is generally based in having placed one's trust in outside religious structures, authorities, or belief systems and suffering the effects of the weakness caused by investing faith outside oneself. Having faith in oneself and one's own efforts is exactly the same thing as having faith in the Divine, since the Divine is within and not without.

Locating the source of faith within oneself, without regard to external religious behavior and belief systems, yet continuing in conformist religious practice, is actually the best route to relieving the worry and anxiety about whether God will really help one in times of need. The answer is yes, one will always be supported through the internal partnership of human and divine. But when Shani occupies the house of ceremonial religion, one is constrained to conformist practice in the outer appearance, and the Divine does not appear to be "customized" to one's own life circumstances.

Looking for God in external religion, one may not see the accurate reflection of one's own self in ritual and legacy belief systems. It may appear to be nothing more than "the opiate of the people" as Karl Marx so piquantly wrote. But underneath the superficial and conformist religious systems there is a layer of permanent and unbreakable connection between human and divine, and this layer is the place where the native with Shani in domain-9 must begin to develop faith. This is faith in the power not of ritual but in the power of one's own mind. The mind is inherently wise, and the Structure of communication between human and divine is built into the human design. That channel which carries the communication between human and divine, the channel of wisdom, realization, and faith, is always present and functioning in the mind of each person.

When Shani occupies the house of religion, the native is not impressed by external displays of piety. However, to avoid the negative consequences of anxiety and worry due to lack of trust in divine support, one must invest in the power of the subconscious mind to evoke the wealth-bringing and wellness-ensuring "Channel 9". Shani in domain-9, when properly appreciated, cuts out much of the baloney of organized religion and forces the native into a pragmatic and true faith in a personal religion not controlled by priests or cultural baggage. Although worry and anxiety are not a fun reason to pursue the development of true faith, the results for wealth, wisdom, and life abundance can be very good - over time - with Shani in 9. Marketplace associations are slowed but not denied; steady income through patient, conservative market behaviors and personal effort. Not a marketplace maverick. Tends to prefer working as a salaried ('salt pay') employee rather than take risks with the income flow. Upstream/downstream relationships are blocked; you don't get connected (easily) to the people who can help you get what you want. The father/guru has low standing which makes connections, courage, problem-solving (6) all under-resourced. Saturnian drishti upon the dusthamsha houses 3 and 6 is helpful. Shani drishti restricts the impact of mental confusion through excessive wordiness (3) and karmic resistance from enemies (6). Yet the native is sometimes too cautious in undertakings (risk-averse Shani!) and too aware of the ever-present negative underbelly of human behavior (6). Shani/9 = a good and sincere person who suffers lack of faith, due to lack of qualified religious/moral guidance as a child. The father is absent or distant. Major trust issues in divine communication channel (Channel 9) - but like all Shani matters these are resolved through maturation. Shani provides the wisdom of practical, material - Over Time.

  • in kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) lawful Shani may be experienced as supportive. Shani imposes routines , conventional behavior patterns, predictable environments , and realistic expectations . In kendra, Shani's influence is overall favorable due to the value of regularity in those environments.

  • Shani the Taskmaster in kendra AND in Makara, Kumbha, or Thulamay provide benefits due to rigid structure (strong bones). (Possible for Karkata, Simha, and Mesha lagna. )

Better results should be predicted if Shani occupies a rashi of Shani, Shukra, or Budha. Better with any type of support from Shukra.

he attitude toward public respectability and professional recognition is fundamentally stubborn, persistent, conservative and slow.

Native is sober and realistic about human social organizations.

Understands the laws of human groups: the larger the group, the lower the common denominator, the greater the need for law and order.

Leadership Anxiety. Fear and worry regarding responsibility for imposing a lawful environment

  • Must work to earn validation of governance. Works to be fully approved, in compliance, and judged perfect under the rule of human law.

  • Yet survival fears based in past-life karma enforce the mandate to perform this work over and over again, until the ignorance is transformed into wisdom.

"Not respected enough " syndrome.

  • The native's capacity to move vigorously in professional duties may be reduced.

Habits of leadership and orderly behavior are resistant to forward movement. The native who wishes to move forward energetically along the path of public reputation, ascending to high social status and achieving significant visibility in the world order, will find such a project to be slow-going and demanding much time.

Try as one might to change the package of attributes, one's ability to achieve positions of high dignityis much delayed.

Good results:

  • for Mesha lagna, Vrishabha lagna, and Makara lagna, wherefrom Shani=10 will occupy a rashi of Shani or His uchcha rashi Thula, the native is born to hold high office. The problem becomes that the organization one has been chosen to serve and the duties involved are so onerous that the native may abdicate despite guaranteed professional status. E.g. Jeddu Krishnamurti (uchcha) abandoned the organization which nominated him to lead it.

Partial exceptions:

  • Naturally, Shani in 10 occupies His own natural house, therefore the characteristic behaviors of Shani - slow, careful fearful, conventional - will ultimately produce the basic social respectability which the native feels obliged to establish.

  • Shani + Mangala, the road to high public office is bumpy and hard, but success may occur if the lord of these two graha is well disposed (Hillary Clinton).

  • Thula lagna = Shani-9 in Karkata which gives "throne yoga". Nelson Mandela, Hillary Clinton. The road to executive office is very challenging, but given a supportive Moon, the native will achieve lasting public dignity and praise for imposing an orderly environment upon an emotionally chaotic situation.

  • Simha lagna = Shani in a rashi of friend Shukra.E.g., Richard Nixon lost several elections but kept steadily carrying on. Were it not for his slightly criminal Chandra-6 in a rashi of Shani

Heavy public responsibilities. Some difficulties or maturation required before obtaining recognition in public positions. Strict adherence to public codes of conduct is required.

Delays or prevents access to sanctuary protection or ashrama or research lab/libraries (12) ; heavy work and responsibilities in foreign lands. Limits settlement or security of family home because the native must move frequently for his work (4). Delays marriage; but supports marriage to a plain, simple, or older person (7).

Shani's natural houses, domain-10 and domain-11, are the least problematic locations for Shanaicharya's hard-working and determined behaviors. Shani always takes time (sometimes a loooong time) but in the end Shani gives stable position in public leadership roles.

Much depends on the rashi and location of the ruling graha, but in generally speaking, Shani's tasks are somewhat easier to complete in Karma Bhava and Labha Bhava. There is a tremendous amount of forced socializing and a huge duty roster in domain-10 and domain-11, but also usually also a large organization to support one's efforts.

Effects

= an executive functionary who works the socially approved system of organizational leadership and government. This person must apply sustained effort with limited resources (Shani the worker)oward the maintenance of executive powers, official duties, leadership roles and positions, and iconic symbolism.
  • Casting His harshest 3rd and 10th aspects upon the protection/temple house (12) and marriage/partnerships (7), plus the lesser but still troublesome 7th aspect upon home/security (4).

  • Some dignity through public responsibility, but makes that responsibility very challenging to carry out because the person has neither shelter of meditation nor shelter of home/emotional security nor easy partnerships.

  • Every action demands detailed consideration, with little help from others.

This person was raised with early responsibilities and unreliable supporters; as adults they believe that "if it is going to be done right I have to do it myself". By damaging the shelter/sanctuary of 12/4/7 and forcing the person to be on-duty so much, Shani/10 makes a highly competent manager but reduces the long-term leadership trajectory.

Dignified but very demanding, and rarely receives full recognition for one's diligent efforts.

Better results should be predicted if Shani occupies a rashi of Shani, Shukra, or Budha. Better with any type of support from Shukra.

he attitude toward earnings and profits, setting and accomplishing goals, social and material networking, and conceptual science, is fundamentally stubborn, persistent, conservative and slow.

Achievement Anxiety. Fear and worry regarding gain of income and attainment of goals.

  • Must work to earn validation of accomplishments.

  • Works to be fully approved, in compliance, and judged perfect under the rule of human law.

  • Yet survival fears based in past-life karma enforce the mandate to perform this work over and over again, until the ignorance is transformed into wisdom.

"Not well-connected enough " syndrome.

  • The native's capacity to move vigorously in large, complex, tightly regulated networks may be reduced.

Habits of systematic marketplace interconnection are resistant to forward movement. The native who wishes to move energetically along the path of scientific, social-philosophical, economic systems, will find such a project to be slow-going and demanding much time. Try as one might to change the package of attributes, one's ability to achieve rapid progress in the marketplace of goods and ideas is much delayed.

Good results:

  • Naturally, Shani in His own bhava will give better-than-average results.

  • for Meena lagna, Mesha lagna, and Dhanusha lagna, wherefrom Shani=11 will occupy a rashi of Shani or His uchcha rashi Thula, the native is born to order and regulate the marketplace of objects and relationships between those objects. One is conservative, hard-working and diligent in matters of social and financial economies, and often a capable leader of social-progressive movements.

  • For any lagna except Mithuna (for which Shani-11 will be neechcha-Mesha), Shani brings heavy responsibilities for guiding large social groups toward a better future, in an orderly fashion and with the optimal distribution of material resources amongst all members of the network. Shani-11 in any rashi = a karaka for populist leadership.

Restrains athletic energies, reduces vitality, and imposes social conformity upon the self-image (1). Reduces the contribution of spouse/partners toward the pool of shared marital assets (8). Limits the number of children, imposes responsibilities toward children, may delay the birth of children. Constrains the natural charisma and disciplines the creative intelligence (5).

Shani's natural houses, domain-10 and domain-11, are the least problematic locations for Shanaicharya's hard-working and determined behaviors.

Much depends on the rashi and location of the ruling graha, but generally speaking, Shani's tasks are somewhat easier to complete in Karma Bhava and Labha Bhava.

Much discipline imposed on the natural intelligence, which results in restraint of natural creativity. Shani imposes a significant duty roster in domain-10 and domain-11, but Shani also usually also provides a large organization within which one is tasked to accomplish the karmic work.

Catastrophic change of randhra bhava is slowed and delayed. This is beneficial for maintenance of material stability, but not as helpful for sincerely desired transformations such as healing through therapeutic touch, psychological counseling on hidden matters, or surgical medicine.

If Shani is strong, the personality and intelligence are disciplined and patient with regard to learning secret information. The native may be well suited to be a student of esoteric or secret healing structures.

All good results from Shani must wait for the fullness of time, but drishti of malefic to dusthamsha domain-8 is generally beneficial.

Effects

11, 1, 5, 8

When Shani/11 brings wealth: for Dhanusha and Makara lagna, Shani becomes lord of dhana bhava. For Dhanusha and Makara, Shani creates a Dhana yoga = L-2 in labha bhava. Distrust and suspicion of the marketplace rules, dislike of the salaried lifestyle, trouble finding a profitable means of operating in the marketplace of goods and ideas.

Network of Friends and elder sibling in particular are conservative to the point of oppression. Nevertheless Shani gives reasonably good results in the house of earnings and achievements, since Shani is the agent of Hard Work and Hard Work is a considerable asset in the pursuit of Earnings! he network of friendship is stable but of limited utility in advancing the native's gainfulness. One must do the majority of one's own work with rather less than "a little help from one's friends". The native may not grasp the concept of "work smarter not harder". Tends to be rather stubborn and traditional in one's approach toward earning income.

Good position for government workers and those in control of regulatory agencies, especially the regulation of economic behaviors.

Native = a marketplace functionary who works the socially approved system of interlocking communities and commercial networking. This person must apply sustained effort with limited resources (Shani the worker) toward the maintenance of large gatherings and assemblies, fraternal organizations, and technology for connectivity at all levels of reality.

Some difficulties or maturation required before obtaining a good relationship with one's in-laws (8). Initially they are absent or unhelpful. The spouse brings less value to the joint assets of marriage.

Limited access to secrets or confidential information, including healing knowledge. Disciplined labor of the physical body. One has less physical vitality, range of motion or range of personality is restricted. Children if present are more of a burden. This is a hard-working person who gains only modestly. Limited fortunes. Although he works very hard to develop "connections" his charisma is weak (5).

  • Better results should be predicted if Shani occupies a rashi of Shani, Shukra, or Budha.

  • Better with any type of support from Shukra.

The attitude toward dreams and spiritual guidance across the bridge from material to astral is fundamentally stubborn, persistent, conservative And slow.

Drishti upon 2

  • One seeks a predictable, safe, conventional approach to banking, knowledge acquisition, and family relations.

Drishti upon 6

  • One seeks a predictable, regulated, and lawful approach toward the dissolution of marriage. Drishti from Shani the karaka of resistance upon Ripu bhava the house of conflict is actually a helpful factor in creating "resistance to divorce" - it is a positive element in maintaining marriage contracts.

Drishti upon 9

  • One seeks a predictable, safe, conservative approach toward engagement with priests, temples, and philosophical wisdom.

  • Much depends on graha in the house. Naturally, if Guru-Chandra-Kuja occupy Meena-9 as for Angelina Jolie, the prognosis for wisdom in action is much more favorable.

  • Nevertheless the native resists innovation in the styling of transmission of sacred teachings, and prefers a neutral or conservative stance on most types of theological controversy.

Shani in 12 gives separation, resistance, delay, and negation private matters. There is a great frustration and feeling of a heavy workload regarding clandestine foreign diplomacy ( Dwight D. Eisenhower , Napoleon Bonaparte, Angelina Jolie ) or bedroom secrets ( Oprah Winfrey) or meditation and private prayer.

One may bear significant responsibilities for dealing with sequestered identity-loss environments such as boarding schools and Orphanages ( Angelina Jolie); concentration camps and prisons ( Dwight D. Eisenhower ); monasteries and places of banishment ( Napoleon Bonaparte ).

Shani in Vyaya bhava denies the utility of meditation, private prayer, astrology and dreams. Shani wants all attention to be focused on matters of immediate material survival. He brooks no waste of time on imaginary or clairsentient information. Shani resists engagement with the traffic on the bridge between the astral plane (subconscious) and the material plane (conscious).

Often the native with Shani in 12 does not dream, or does not remember one's dreams. Hospitals and healing sanctuaries are of no use to this native, who sleeps little and understands less about the astral component of the human body and its needs.

Shani in 12 also contributes to the dissolution of the material plane identity. Shani's heavy work habits and habit of worrying about survival tend to siphon off the vitality from the animal, blood-fed, muscular body and transmit the life-force back into the dream world. As a result Shani becomes associated with losses. Due to Shani's subconsciously driven survival anxiety, the two domains which are ruled by Shani in 12 will get drained of it materialization empowerment.

Habits of reflection, meditation, intuitive perception, and prayer are resistant to forward movement. The native who wishes to move energetically along the path of clairsentient wisdom, will find such a project to be slow-going and demanding much time. Try as one might to change the package of attributes, one's ability to achieve rapid progress in the realm of astral-to-material transaction is much delayed.

Good results:

  • Shani and Guru are neutral. Therefore over time, and with Shani's characteristic slow, careful plodding approach, communication with spirit guides and ancestors can be restored. Dreams will begin to yield valuable information about the laws of the universe, with persistent discipline in meditation and commitment to regular prayer.

Transits

  • When gochara Shani moves across the twelfth house from lagna (material) or from Chandra (emotional) one has a background sense of "dissolution" Of the beliefs, behaviors, expectations, and wishes of the personality.

  • his is a relatively gentle effect unless Shani natally occupies the 12th. One may feel lost, or exhausted. However, most intuitive people feel quiet; and focused on some type of research activity.

  • May involved forced relocation to a foreign country, but only with a supporting bhukti.

  • 30 years development of personality and body are coming to a close.

  • here may be sleeplessness. Too much work to meditate; dreamless sleep. Enforced work in a dormitory, bedroom, library, research lab, restricted camp or other sanctuary.

Oppresses values from family of origin (2), constrains the health (6), and skeptical of father / guru / priests (9).

Shani in domain-12 = an identity-loss functionary who works the socially approved system of sanctuaries, enclosures, monasteries, prisons, and dream-state realities.

This person must apply sustained effort with limited resources (Shani the worker)oward the maintenance of protected enclosure spaces such as convents and monasteries, prisons and concentration camps, hospitals and asylums, ashrams and dormitories, libraries and research laboratories, and all the world's imaginative dream space.

Effects

12, 2, 6, 9

Due to Shani's subconsciously driven survival anxiety, the domains which are ruled by Shani in 12 experience draining of their materialization empowerment.

Some difficulties or maturation required before obtaining Wealth (2) due to restricted values transmission through the birth-family culture. (If domain-4 is strong this can be reversed through the discipline of formal education.)

Ritual religion may be rejected; no expectation of help from deities or priests (9).

No confidence in borrowed money, fear of usury (6). This person is chained to fantasies, which may be vulgar in character (Shani), due to the imposed limits on values and temple religion plus a realistic tolerance for human exploitation and disagreement (6).

Good for work as prison-guard, manager of sanctuary or ashram, the hospital-based professions, and those who handle foreigners or restricted-access visitors. Shani-12 encloses one's subconscious awareness in a protective shell of drowsiness (tamas) due in part to Shani preventing truly restful sleep.

The native has little or no access to guidance (12) from ancestors, divinations and dreams, unless some other graha intervenes.
