**Accuracy of divisional charts depends entirely on accuracy of birth time.** Varga charts can be exceptionally useful. However, if accurate birth time is not available, divisional charts are misleading, and should be ignored.
Names of the Sixteen Parashari Vargas:
D-1 = Lagna
D-2 = Hora
D-3 = Drekkana
D-4 = Chaturthamsha
D-7 = Saptamsha
D-9 = Navamsha
D-10 = Dashamsha
D-12 = Dvadashamsha
D-16 = Shodashamsha
D-20 = Vimshamsha
D-24 = Chaturvimshamsha (Siddhamsha)
D-27 = Saptavimshamsha (Bhamsha)
D-30 = Trimshamsha

Parashara says, "Now, I will explain the use of these sixteen divisions.
The physique from Lagna
wealth from Hora
fortunes from Chaturthamsha
parents from Dwadashamsha
Benefits and adversities through conveyances from Shodashamsha
worship from Vimshamsha
learning from Chaturvimshamsha
strength and weakness from Saptavimshamsha
evil effects from Trimshamsha
auspicious and inauspicious effects from Khavedamsha
all indications from both Akshavedamsha and Shashtyamsha
these are the considerations to be made through the respective vargas.
The bhava whose lord is in a malefic Shashtyamsha will diminish, so say Garga & others.
The bhava whose lord is in a benefic Shodashamsha flourish.
This is how the 16 vargas are to be evaluated."
--- BPHS Ch. 7, Shloka 1-8 "Use of the Sixteen Divisions"
This chart is from Das Goravani at www.gorvani.com :
The logic of divisional ["harmonic"] charts:
All of the divisional charts show the field of psychic expectations created by the accumulation of one's past-life experiences. There are specific, largely subconscious, fields of expectation which we act out as if they were a script. OK, they are a script! As always it is possible to re-write the script but only if one becomes conscious of the deep-seated psychic patterns lodged in the depths of the subconscious mind.
Most people walk through these scripts - good and bad, easy and difficult - like robots. The field of expectation is simply the result of accumulated experience which predisposes one to react in predictable ways. Usually there is a repeat of the expected behaviors, the treatment we receive as children. Then, it is repeated again in adulthood vis-à-vis all the adult roles - marriage, career, raising one's own children, handling parents & siblings, etc.
There is a set of expectations for each of life's basic undertakings: marriage, children, career, wealth, parents, home, education, etc. You name it, it is the fruit of something which happened in past lives. Therefore, everything can be assigned some role in some varga!
The three most psychically complex relationships we have in this life involve the spouse, children, and parents. Therefore the most frequently used divisional charts are: D-7 for children; D-9 for marriage; D-12 for parents. D-10 should be consulted for career, D-3 for sibling conflicts, and D-30 for confirmation of troubles through sickness & misfortune (i.e., to determine the severity of an illness or a legal setback).
Some of the vargas separate the portfolio of one radix house into several specific micro-focus charts. Thus matters of radix house-4 which includes all types of protection and support, are distinguished by D-16 which is concerned strictly with vehicles, and D-24 concerned specifically with education.
Varga characteristics do not override radix characteristics. Rather the role of the radix graha within the vargas which are relevant to the question, will supplement and confirm the radix prognosis for the matter in question.
E.g., for matters of education, radix L-4, radix L-7 and radix Budha are is the primary significators. L-4 is usually the strongest of these, and L-4's radix character will set the paradigm for education in this lifetime while L-7 and karaka Budha contribute thematic variations within that paradigm.
For example, L-4 is Shani, for Thula and Vrischika natives. This native works hard to utilize whatever educational opportunity is allotted to them. Shani's character as defined by Shani's rashi, bhava, yogas, and drishti received, is determinative in predicting education for the native.
However, to fully understand the limits and achievements regarding education for the native, we must see not only the obvious role of Shani (and Shukra L-7 and Budha) but also we must check the role of Shani (and to a lesser extent Shukra L-7, Budha, and any graha involved in a parivartamsha yoga with Shani) within D-24.
(Note that other vargas related to bandhusthana need not be consulted to answer a question about education. D-4 which is for the shelter and prosperity aspect of bandhu, and D-16 which is for the vehicles, are not relevant.)
Varga charts do not *define* the native's experience in the assigned area, but rather provide *confirmation* of radix & navamsha significations. If confirmation of radix/navamsha strength does not occur in appropriate varga, career expectations drawn from D-1 and D-9 should be reduced.
When the lord of any varga is empowered in radix (whether a powerful benefic or a troublesome powerful malefic) the native has programmed highly significant spiritual information into the web of relationships he expects to encounter in the environment described by that varga.
E.g., if the lord of D-20 is strong, spiritual practice is a site of profound self-revelation to the native. The spiritual path in this case may be smooth (as in a wonderful benefic) or ragged (as in a violent malefic) but the path is crucially important in this lifetime.
If the lord of D-3 is strong in radix, then teamwork, siblings, group mental process, competition, and self-made wealth are powerful venues for self-realization.
Mahadasha of the varga lord and its bhukti periods will emphasize matters of the varga whose lord is strong in radix.
Self-revelation is required to connect us with missing (subconsciously concealed) aspects of ourselves.
When we get all the pieces of the Self puzzle, we are whole and at that moment of wholeness we know God. It is possible to advance on the path toward realization using any environment, any set of relationships, any mirrors we choose.
If dashamsha lord is strong in radix, the native is choosing career, public service, and earthly power as a vehicle for self-knowledge on the road to God-realization.
The dashamsha may also be read "internally" that is, the same method as reading the radix, to very finely tune the profile of profession.
One method of approach is to read the vargas the same way you would read the radix chart, using the standard meanings of the houses & yogas. E.g.,
the intra-D-3 7th house of the D-3 [Drekkana] confirms your sibling's marriage, business contracts & capacity to make agreements.
The internal 10th house of the D-9 [navamsha] confirms your spouse's career & public standing.
Also read the role which the radix house lords assume within the varga.
radix L-10 should be strong in dashamsha to confirm maximum public leadership (e.g., see G.W. Bush where radix L-10 Kuja is exalted in 7th dashamsha.)
radix L-7 should be strong in navamsha to confirm a happy marital situation
radix L-5 should be strong in saptamsha to confirm benefits from children
Also in reading the varga's also pay special attention to the karaka house.
The 10th dashamsha is especially important for career. World leaders in Politics almost uniformly have a powerful 10th dashamsha.
The 7th navamsha is key to spouse's personality.
The 12th dwadashamsha reveals character of parents.
Etc.
A few practice rules for reading varga charts are quite different from the way we read radix charts:
The intra-varga configurations (relative yogas etc.) are significant in the interior psychological & reflective life of the native, and they do rather precisely map out the interactive mechanisms on the material, astral, causal and spiritual planes (and subdivisions of those planes). But frankly most people do not possess the level of reflective awareness to realize that they are subconsciously causing their own effects!
Except for the lagna lord of each varga, whose relative position intra-varga is so prominent psychologically that the native will often recognize its effects, reading intra-varga house-lordships will not produce much useful insight regarding actions on the material plane.
The Jyotishi can described in great details the subtle belief-system interactions defined by D-27 Bhamsha -- but the native who does not objectively observe one's own belief system will hardly recognize any truth to this bhamsha analysis.
For a more vivid and real-world explanation of the event-triggers and their material consequences, read the effects of varga lordship from the behavior of that varga house-lord in radix.
E.g., the lord of the 6th navamsha is a trouble-maker in marriage. Periods of the L-6 in navamsha causes the spouse to create or experience a loss of marital agreement. If, within the navamsha only, the native would have L-6 occupying the D-9's lagna, then this native is probably an instigator of one's own marital conflict. However the native is unlikely to recognize this pattern because he very much perceives the conflict to originate with the spouse.
Thus it will However the nature of the trouble-making behavior is more vividly described by the lord of the 6th navamsha's behavior in radix., The explanation provided by reading the navamsha as if it were an independent chart like radix and evaluating the behavior of L-6 within navamsha only, will be much more psychological and too ephemeral for most natives to comprehend. and much less by his behavior inside the navamsha.
Varga planets are seen only as natural malefics or benefics.
Budha, bright Chandra, Guru & Shukra are always benefic.
Dark Chandra / Surya / Shani / Mangala / Rahu-Ketu are always troublesome.
If the dasha/bhukti lord is also a lagnesha of a varga, the period of this lord will give strong results in matters of the varga. E.g. in periods of the Moon, vargas with Karka rising are activated.
All the usual yogas apply in varga readings, except yogas that depend on house-lordship.
Planets that gain strength in the radix also benefit their varga position. E.g., a planet which is retrograde in radix or vargottama in radix-varga carries good auspice. Bright Moon in radix does well in all vargas.
A key method for predicting whether any undertaking will fare well, is whether the mahadasha pati & bhukti-pat will prosper in the relevant varga.
First of course, the wedding must occur. Marriage timing is (normally) predicted to occur during the bhukti of navamsha L-7 or L-1 simultaneous with transiting Rahu-Ketu's residence in a key partnership axis.
But once the marriage is sanctified, will it fare well?
That depends largely on the health of the navamsha, and the strength of current mahadasha & bhukti lords. Probably more influential is the mahadasha pati, although a very long-running bhutki, such as Shukra/Shani might also be very influential in marriage.
If the mahadasha pati occupies a good house *in navamsha* and is also a natural benefic, all is well. A natural malefic in a good house is pretty OK. A natural malefic in a navamsha dusthana - not favorable. If circumstances in the navamsha are bad enough, it would be wise to delay the marriage or, if that's not possible for family reasons, be exceptionally cautious in all marriage communications, whilst the inauspicious mahadasha remains in effect.
So, look to the navamsha first and foremost for predicting the prosperity of any undertaking. An event might well occur, but its effects can be good or ill.
For matters of career, a new position may well be obtained, during the bhukti of 10th lord or Surya.
But the current mahadasha lord must be favorable in the dashamsha for true excellence in public service & full recognition of leadership to flower.
IMO, the deepest insights available in Jyotisha come through recognition of the matching energies that link us into various other people, environments, and experiences. Jyotisha has the remarkable power to show us how we are creating our own reality in real time. It is like a movie script, showing not only the character's lines but also their motivation and history!
This insight comes from the INTERACTION BETWEEN THE RADIX AND THE VARGA CHARTS.
To locate the point of origination of any situation or relationship, find the psychological "seeds" of matching energy within ones own character. Find the expectations, preconceptions, or other subconsciously driven reactive patterns which cause repeating situations in life. If you can consciously alter the seeds, you can change the fruit! Karma is resolved through this knowledge.
To see the energy in YOU that IS CREATING YOUR REALITY - children, career, wealth, education, spiritual development, parents, siblings, etc - follow these three steps:
The radix shows real-time material life. Locate the ruler of the radix house which signifies the matter at hand - house-7 for marriage, house-10 for career, etc.
The amsha (varga) shows the fruits of that reality. Find that ruler in the relevant amsha (D-9 for marriage, D-3 for siblings, D-12 for parents, etc.)
see the lord of that amsha sign within the radix. This is the part of YOU -- the seed of the projection -- that is creating the reality seen in the amsha.
If this planet is doing well in radix, expect a smooth ride in the matter at hand.
If this planet is troubled, the amazingly good news is that YOU CAN FIX IT. All skandhas, the accumulated heaps of past karma, can be improved through CONSCIOUS attention.
Under supervision of a therapist, psychic counselor, guru, meditation instructor - or just by personal self-discipline and commitment to remain "awake" to the action-reaction patterns dominating our lives - these compulsive patterns can be released and replaced with positive energy.
The key, as any Buddhist will tell you, is to PAY ATTENTION to the reactive pattern.
In practice this method applies to any varga. However, perform this study on the navamsha FIRST, for all questions. Navamsha reveals the underlying dharma, or reality, of the situation. After examining the neutral facts of the dharma or "phenomena as-it-is", then proceed to the individual vargas and do the radix-to-varga-to-radix method there.
D-2 = "Hora":
"Field of Psychic Expectation for Matters of Wealth"
In the matter of increased wealth:
To determine the prognosis for Gain of Wealth, look first (of course) to all the effects upon labha bhava [the 11th house of gain] itself.
The house which defines and energizes "gainfulness" sits in 3/11 angle to the gainfulness-house: it is dhana bhava, the 2nd house of food-wealth.
Clearly, producing income is one of the central goals of the wealth house.
Examine dhana bhava in the radix. Will the radix 2nd house generate the community support (11) and personal courage (3) necessary to realize its goals?
Outcome depends on the relationship between the 3/11 houses, their rulers and their occupants.
Once the radix 3/11 relationship is established, look for confirmation of the "fruits" of the 2nd house in the D-2 divisional chart: "Hora" The Hora reveals fine detail of how the "results" of dhana bhava manifest.
The central result of wealth being income, we gain from Hora (presuming an accurate birth time) a confirming level of detail regarding gainfulness, which amounts to whether society is in general for one or against one!
(I myself do not use the Hora, finding Chaturamsha more sensible.)
D-3 - Drekkana Drekkhana [Dreshkha-ans, Dreshka-amsha]
-->> Disambiguation from the Drekkana: Table of 36 decanates
"Field of Psychic Expectation for Matters of Siblings"
To determine the prognosis for siblings/cousins/competitors/communication patterns, look first (of course) to all the effects upon Bhratru bhava [the radix third house] itself. Bhratru bhava defines how we function on teams, in small groups.
The house which defines and energizes "siblings/competitors/courage" sits in 3/11 angle to the radix lagna. Tanu bhava is the 1st house of physical body, appearance, social stigma based on your appearance, vitality, musculature, identity.
Clearly, achieving good siblings & worthy competitors is one of the central goals of taking birth in a particular class of physical body.
Then look to the condition of tanu bhava in the radix. Will tanu bhava generate the community support (11) and personal courage (3) necessary to realize its goals? Can it generate charismatic attractiveness, vitality necessary for competition, enthusiasm for life and strong personal identity?
Outcome depends on the relationship between the 3/11 houses, their rulers and their occupants.
Once the radix 3/11 relationship is established, look for confirmation of the "fruits" of the 1st house in the third divisional chart: D-3/Drekkana. Drekkana reveals fine detail of how the "results" of taking a particular class & composition of physical body will manifest in physical, emotional, and mental communication patterns.
The central result of having a body being the development of coordinated physical, mental, social, and emotional communication patterns, we gain from Drekkana (presuming an accurate birth time) a confirming level of detail regarding siblings/competitors/small group process. D-3 shows small-group collective thought patterns & this view can help the Jyotishi evaluate the native's mental health.
Gracious and abundant planets in drekkana indicate successful spiritual work in creatively developing one's self and others. If one has tapped into divine identity as it manifests in small-group process, one will likely be empowered by strong & supportive siblings, close neighbors, & team-mates.
Conflicted planets in drekkana indicate unresolved psychic difficulty in the native's subconscious, which will manifest in this life in the intimate mirror of relationships to siblings and team-mates.
The good news is, as always: if unconsciously-continued patterns arise into consciousness, karma is transformed into wisdom and negative implications of the astrological charts may be reversed.
[BPL note: the D-3 varga now commonly called 'drekkana' was probably originally called the 'dreshkhamsha', but may have changed over time, by analogy, to match the Greek term dekka. This process happens in all languages.]
D-9 = "Navamsha"
"Field of Psychic Expectation for Matters of Marriage and Spiritual Wholeness"
Why is the 7th house articulated in the 9th harmonic?
Because marriage is considered to be the most prominent result of religious development in past lives. The spouse(s) we marry in the current life have been our spiritual partners in past lives. If we developed compassion and understanding for others in past lives, all should go well indeed. If not...
Navamsha is an exceptionally valuable varga for the key questions of life, which all devolve upon how much and what kind of wisdom has been acquired in past lives.
Generally matters signified by the "swamsha" (lord of navamsha lagna) and the house which swamsha rules in radix, are easy to accomplish in this life due to past-life build-up of skill & wisdom in those matters. (Not necessarily morally good or profitable or approved ... just easy! If swamsha is a criminal planet there will be an easy life of crime.)
Navamsha gives a richly detailed micro-view ones' disembodied life conducted through psycho-mental projections. Navamsha represents our psychic field of perception, including hidden assumptions & expectations. What we expect to happen will happen!
Particularly we live vicariously through the life of the Spouse. Marriage, spiritual awareness, religious education, moral consciousness, and happiness in general are read through the navamsha.
The joy and also the unresolved conflict of one's marriage situation is founded upon the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual consciousness which obtained in past life (and which usually continues unconsciously into the present life).
A smooth and prosperous navamsha indicates committed spiritual work in previous lives. If you have reflected the divine in others so will others reflect the divine in you.
See the more detailed Navamsha page for instructions re: reading navamsha 1/7 axis for 1st-marriage, 2/8 axis for 2nd-marriage, 3/9 axis for 3rd-marriage, etc.
D-7 Saptamsha:
"Field of Psychic Expectation for Matters of Children"
To determine the prognosis for Children, look first (of course) to all the effects upon putra bhava [the 5th house of creativity] itself.
The house which defines and energizes "children" sits in 3/11 angle to the children-house: it is yuvati bhava, the 7th house of marriage.
Clearly, producing children is one of the central goals of marriage.
Examine kalatra bhava in the radix. Will the radix 7th house generate the community support (11) and personal courage (3) necessary to realize its goals?
Outcome depends on the relationship between the 3/11 houses, their rulers and their occupants.
Once the radix 3/11 relationship is established, look for confirmation of the "fruits" of the 7th house in the seventh divisional chart: D-7/Saptamsha. Saptamsha reveals fine detail of how the "results" of marriage manifest.
The central result of marriage being children, we gain from Saptamsha (presuming an accurate birth time) a confirming level of detail regarding children.
D-12 - Dwadashamsha:
"Field of Psychic Expectation for Matters of Parents"
To determine the prognosis for parentage, look first (of course) to all the effects upon Karma bhava [the radix tenth house] itself.
The house which defines and energizes " parents" sits in 3/11 angle to the dignity-house: it is Vyaya bhava, the 12th house of psychic communication, sanctuary, & retreat.
Clearly, choosing good parents through psychic networking in the pre-conception state (12th house) is one of the central goals of meditation & spirit communication.
Then look to the condition of vyaya bhava in the radix. Will vyaya bhava generate the community support (11) and personal courage (3) necessary to realize its goals? Can it generate public dignity, high levels of social permission, and scope of social action?
Outcome depends on the relationship between the 3/11 houses, their rulers and their occupants.
Once the radix 3/11 relationship is established, look for confirmation of the "fruits" of the 12th house in the twelfth divisional chart: D-12/Dwadash-amsha. Dwadashamsha reveals fine detail of how the "results" of pre-birth kibitzing / communication with the ancestors will manifest.
The central result of psychic communication being the setting of permission levels, we gain from Dwadashamsha (presuming an accurate birth time) a confirming level of detail regarding parentage.
To see details of the father in Dwadashamsha, find either 9th-from-lagna or 9th-from-Surya in the D-12 (whichever is stronger).
To see details of the father in Dwadashamsha, find 4th-from-lagna or 4th-from-Chandra in the D-12 - (whichever is stronger).
Lesser Used Vargas
D-4 - Chaturamsha [Chaturthamsha]
"Field of Psychic Expectation for Matters of Housing & Education"
To determine the prognosis for Luxury, [Laxmi] look first (of course) to all the effects upon dhana bhava [the 2nd house of wealth] itself.
The house which defines and energizes "wealth" sits in 3/11 angle to the money-house: it is bandhu bhava, the 4th house of home, mother, education, and roots.
Clearly, producing good fortunes is one of the central goals of home, mother and education in cultural values.
Examine bandhu bhava in the radix. Will the radix 4th house generate the community support (11) and personal courage (3) necessary to realize its goals?
Outcome depends on the relationship between the 3/11 houses, their rulers and their occupants.
Once the radix 3/11 relationship is established, look for confirmation of the "fruits" of the 4th house in the fourth divisional chart: D-4/Chaturamsha. Chaturamsha reveals fine detail of how the "results" of mother's early training will manifest.
The central result of mother's love & training being good fortune for her children, we gain from Chaturamsha (presuming an accurate birth time) a confirming level of detail regarding luxury, wealth, good fortunes.
"Field of Psychic Expectation for Matters of the 6th house"
Shastamsha does not itself define illness, accident, or imbalance in the physical body, but rather D-6 confirms existing character of house-6 and 6th lord in radix.
As with lagna lords of all vargas, lord of D-6 lagna gains inauspicious energy through association with matters of conflict and imbalance.
In itself, the D-6 lagnesha has only minor powers to stimulate the subconscious patterns which in turn generate physical illness.
However if the planet which is D-6 lagnesha is also a malefic in radix - a natural malefic or a dusthana lord - then D-6 lagnesha becomes more pernicious during his bhukti.
Additional confirmation of a range of misfortunes which include sickness, and recurring toxic environmental influences, may be confirmed from D-30 Trimshamsha (below)
D-6, D-30, and D-60
"Shastamsha" D-6 is different from "shastIamsha" D-60. However: D-6, D-30, and D-60 all denote inauspicious effects arising from suppressed imbalanced conditions in the subconscious, which are carry-overs from unresolved conflict in past lives. They are all related to Ari Bhava house-6, and they should all be consulted when predicting the outcome of enemies, debts, or disease.
D-10 - Dashamsha [Dashamamsha]
"Field of Psychic Expectation for Matters of Career & Profession"
Dashamsha does not define career but rather provides confirmation of radix & navamsha significations. If confirmation of radix/navamsha strength does not occur in dashamsha, career expectations drawn from D-1 and D-9 should be reduced.
Gracious and abundant planets in dashamsha indicate successful spiritual education in cycles of birth and death. If you have achieved the absolute humility necessary to channel the enormous dignity of divine power, so you will be dignified by a powerful social position.
Conflicted planets in dashamsha indicate past-life/subconscious ego-attachment and resistance to acknowledge divine greatness, which will manifest in this life in inadequate social recognition and respect
The good news is, as always: if unconsciously-continued patterns arise into consciousness, karma is transformed into wisdom and negative implications of the astrological charts may be reversed.
Here is a dashamsha-based career timing analysis
D-16 - Shodashamsha [Khalamsha]
"Field of Psychic Expectation for Specific Matters of Vehicles"
Another elaboration of details broadly contained in the 4th house.
Shodashamsha is specific to vehicles and their good or bad effects. Whether your vehicle is a lumbering elephant, a jeweled palanquin, a creaking oxcart or a luxury automobile - you will find the details in D-16.
Useful to study the D-16 when pondering a vehicle purchase, or making vehicle insurance choices.
"The bhava whose lord is in a benefic Shodashamsha flourish."
-- BPHS Ch. 7, Shloka 8
D-16 may reveal the up-side of an otherwise poor-looking planet. Jyotishi check the D-16 not only to ascertain vehicle karma, but also to balance their spot judgment. If that fallen Shani seems intuitively less damaged than it appears, it probably is. The D-16 will reveal the secret benefits of a planet if there are any; and send the Jyotishi back to the radix in search of confirming positive aspects.
"Field of Psychic Expectation for Specific Matters of the 5th house"
[coming soon]
D-24 - Siddha-amsha [Chatur-vimsha-amsha ]:
"Field of Psychic Expectation for Specific Matters of Knowledge"
Learning, education and knowledge. Powers obtained thereby. Gives more information about the dimension of the foundational 4th house which rules moral education, basic skills education, and socialization through education.
If siddhis or [magical] powers of concentration are wanted, check D-24 to see whether there is sufficient mental aptitude and favorable circumstances for attracting teachers, scholarly fellow practitioners, good schools, etc.
Lord of the Siddhamsha is a smart planet whose bhukti periods bring academic and spiritual accomplishments through discipline and concentrated study.
D-27 - Nakshatramsha - Bhamsha [Sapta-vimsha-amsha] :
"Field of Psychic Expectation for Specific Matters of Astral Body Behavior"
Radix D-1 = material matters, manifestation upon "physical plane" perceived by the five physical senses
Navamsha D-9 = psycho-emotional matters, manifestation upon the "astral plane" perceived by the feelings & intuitive intelligence (approximately 22 distinctive clairvoyant & clairaudient senses can be defined)
Bhamsha D-27 = thought & belief-system matters, manifestation upon the "causal plane", perceived by faculties of objective thought and rational-intuitive perception.
(These apprehensive faculties can be awakened through philosophical study & reflection, and also the belief systems can be observed from a neutral distance by those with developed ability to assess and manage thoughts.)
Sahasranamamsha D-108 = direct perception of divine presence through identity with it, i.e. achievement full divinity through elimination of concern with lower (causal, astral, material) particulate structures.
D-30 - Trimshamsha [Thrimsha-amsa]
"Field of Psychic Expectation for Specific Matters of the 6th house"
D-30 signals health problems & general misfortunes of life. Lord of Trimshamsha is always to some extent a trouble-maker, no matter how distinguished His role in other matters in radix or navamsha.
However if the D-30 lord is also malefic in radix or navamsha, His additional negative D-1/D-9 status definitely empowers the D-30 to cause greater mischief in the central Imbalance categories of animosity, debt, and dis-ease.
Bhukti period of Lord of the Trimshamsha is when we see the annoying effects of suppressed conflicts from past lives:
Example of Trimshamsha confirming Budha's power to trigger repeating general misfortune in life of a chronically ill woman.
Example of Lord of Trimshamsha who is also radix L-8 making health mischief in mid-life
As always conscious is the key. Eruption of health imbalance, sudden financial woes, or animosity in marriage or business partnerships are all completely curable. The key is to accept psychic responsibility - without guilt - for one's role in the imbalance.
The seed will always be suppressed conflict, which the native is in the lifelong habit of suppressing due to incompatible values in the family culture. Be looking for a mode of denial, an internal policy of pretending that some pair of incompatible beliefs or behaviors which are causing internal imbalance are "just fine".
It's not just fine; it's making you sick or it got you into a fight or an accident. The character of lord of Trimshamsha will tell you what to look for.
Look for the place inside yourself, in your psycho-emotional energy field, where an old hurt, anger, or negative expectation is lingering. This is what attracts the attack from the "outside" - the angry spouse or the angry pancreas or the unhelpful bank officer or who/whatever is causing the suffering!
If you can remove the matching energy from your psycho-emotional inside, the matching angry or destructive energy from the outside will have nothing to connect with, and the trouble-making person, policy, or parasite will go away.
However it is absolutely necessary to accept personal responsibility for your own role in having attracted this sort of trouble in the first place. Getting into trouble does not mean you are a morally bad person, but it does mean that you are unconsciously hosting the negative expectation that something bad is rather inevitably coming your way. Embedded beliefs, usually deeply woven into family culture, such as: "the only way a person can get time off work is to get sick" or "consumer bank loans are evil rip-offs that exploit working people" or "driving too fast is the only way to get everything done" are psycho-mental set-ups for illness, accident, and unmanageable debt.
The Trimshamsha lord only has power over those who live in the victim state. When consciously managed, one can observe the D-30 lord in action during His bhukti (or if He is a mahagraha like Shani, during his major transits too) and defuse the conflict while it is happening. I.e., if you know you are in the time period of the D-30 lord, be especially mindful of embedded negative expectations suddenly attracting the agents of misfortune.
Is fallen Budha your D-30 lord? Be mindful of inarticulate, emotionally overcharged conversations. Uccha Shani? Your sense of social justice can also antagonize those with a different view of the situation. Moon? Trouble agents will be women, who remind you of your mother, and who stimulate deeply suppressed conflicts about nurturing and protection. Shukra? Watch for conflict about pleasure, and how to have it. Etc.
When the Ascendant or the Moon sign is owned by Jupiter, the female born in a Trimsamsa of Mars will be endowed with many good qualities of head and heart;
if it be that of Saturn, she will not indulge much in sexual intercourse;
if it belonged to Jupiter, she will be endowed with noble qualities of head and heart;
if it belongs to Mercury she will be an expert on worldly knowledge;
and if it be that of Venus, she will be chaste. -- Jataka Desha Marga, Ch. 13

D-60 or Shashtyamsha [Dasha-varga]:
"Field of Psychic Expectation for Specific Matters of the 10th house"
BPHS Chapter 6, Shloka 33-41:
"Shashtiamsha (1/60th part of a Rashi, or half a degree each).
To calculate the Shashtiamsha Lord
ignore the Rashi position of a Graha
take the degrees etc. it traversed in that Rashi.
Multiply that figure by 2
divide the degrees by 12.
Add 1 to the remainder, which will indicate the Rashi, in which the Shashtiamsha falls.
The Lord of that Rashi is the Graha, ruling the said Shashtiamsha.
In odd Rashis, the names of 60 Shashtyamsha are

Grahas in benefic Shashtiamshas produce auspicious,
while the opposite is true in case of Grahas in malefic Shashtiamshas."
"The bhava whose lord is in a malefic Shashtyamsha will diminish, so say Garga and others."
-- BPHS Ch. 7, Shloka 8
One Shasthyamsa = 30 minutes of Arc.
Therefore = 720 Shasthyamsas in the full 360 degree circle.
Shasthyamsha lords are either malefic or benefic.
Evaluating retrograde graha
One use of D-60 is to determine whether a retrograde planet will give fruits or not. Retrograde planet results are normally delayed, but not denied.
Some schools of thought assert that a retrograde malefic gains power, while a retrograde benefic loses power. There is some merit to the different opinions on the true effects of retrograde. The Shashtyamsha lord help make the determination of good or difficult results because the Shashtyamsha lord will either be malefic or benefic, and this may help to settle the case.
If the graha falls into a malefic Shashtyamsha, it is considered that negative karma is operating i.e. there is a need for payback. In the case of negative Shashtyamsha position it becomes more likely that results of the graha will be delayed or denied denied.
Shashtiamsha: karmic underbelly of magnificent graha
D-60 may reveal the downside of an otherwise excellent-looking radix planet. It is common to see the exalted planets of morally corrupt political dictators and apparently successful thieves, as being quite devastated in the D-60. This situation indicates that a temporarily powerful person will endure a tragic fall from power.
Jyotishi check the D-60 to correct their spot judgment regarding especially magnificent planets.
If that exalted Guru in dharma bhava seems intuitively too good to be true, it probably is. The D-60 will reveal the karmic underbelly if there is one.
Vocabulary: Planetary "amsha"s in Varga charts:
"Amsha" ( = "portion" or section)
(Hindi = 'ans')
definition
example & note
Lagnamsha
(Hindi = "lagnans")
= the *rashi* of the radix lagna.
E.g., if radix lagna is Vrischika, then Scorpio in Dwadashamsha is called "lagnamsha".
Planets placed in Lagnamsha activate the Lagna during their periods or the days ruled by them. Also, planets transiting lagnamsha activate the lagna.
Vargottamsha (Hindi = "Vargottama")
= graha occupies the identical rashi in both the radix chart and any one of the varga charts
E.g., if radix Guru occupies Simha in both radix and navamsha, Guru is called "vargottamsha". The implication is strengthening, which is usually favorable.
Parivartamsha
(Hindi = "parivartans", or "parivartan")
= two grahas which exchange the other's portions, thus "exchange of signs"
E.g., if Shani occupies Vrischika and Kuja occupies Kumbha, the native enjoys the "exchange of signs" between Kuja and Shani. (read for Kuja and Shani as if they occupied their swakshetra.)
Uttamamsha
(Hindi = "uttamans")
uttama = superior
= the *planet* which rules the radix lagna
If lagna = Mesha, lagnesha = Kuja
Suryamsha
= the sign which Surya occupies in radix chart.
E.g., if Sun occupies Leo in D-1, then Leo in the navamsha is called "Suryamsha".
Planets placed in Suryamsha activate Ravi during their periods or the days ruled by them. Also, planets transiting Suryamsha activate the Sun.
Guramsha
= the sign which Guru occupies in rashi
E.g., if Guru occupies Leo in D-1, then Simha in the Saptavimshamsha is called Guramsha, "Guru's portion"
Planets placed in Guramsha activate Guru during their periods or the days ruled by them.
Ketvamsha
= the sign which Ketu occupies in rashi
E.g., if Ketu occupies Taurus in D-1, then Vrishabha [Taurus] in each varga is called Ketvamsha
Swamsha
= the sign on the navamsha lagna
E.g., if Karka rises in navamsha, the sign of Cancer gains special significance in the native's life. "Swamsha" can be used as another name for Cancer when discussing this person's varga charts.
"Swa" means "self". The sign rising in D-9 indicates that the true self is the product of one's priestly activities in past lives. Any planet occupying the swamsha is more attuned to spiritual reality.
Vaisheshikamsha
= "in the best possible location" - usually means exalted in kendra, with drishti of benefics
Reflection on the Grand Cycle of Parenting:
The Sevenfold Cause-and-Effect Method
"If we have been reborn time after time, it is evident that we have needed many mothers to give birth to us. ...the first cause bringing about bodhicitta is the recognition that all beings have been our mother.
The love and kindness shown us by our mother in this life would be difficult to repay. She endured many sleepless nights to care for us when we were helpless infants. She fed us and would have willingly sacrificed everything, including her own life, to spare ours.
As we contemplate her example of devoted love, we should consider that each and every being throughout existence has treated us this way. Each dog, cat, fish, fly, and human being has at some point in the beginningless past been our mother and shown us overwhelming love and kindness. Such a thought should bring about our appreciation. This is the second cause of bodhicitta.
As we envision the present condition of all these beings, we begin to develop the desire to help them change their lot. This is the third cause, and out of it comes the fourth, a feeling of love cherishing all beings. This is an attraction toward all beings, similar to what a child feels upon seeing his or her mother.
This leads us to compassion, which is the fifth cause of bodhicitta. Compassion is a wish to separate these suffering beings, our mothers of the past, from their miserable situation. At this point we also experience loving-kindness, a wish that all beings find happiness. As we progress through these stages of responsibility, we go from wishing that all sentient beings find happiness and freedom from suffering to personally assuming responsibility for helping them enter this state beyond misery. This is the final cause. As we scrutinize how best to help others, we are drawn to achieving the fully enlightened and omniscient state of Buddhahood."
