Shad-bala totals are the sum of numerous smaller calculations and weighting of those individual results. 

There are various methods for calculating Shadbala, in various Jyotisha traditions. 

Shadbala is never the 'cause' of dynamics in a nativity, but rather a secondary method of assessment. 

Shadbala is a generalized ranking of many factors which can increase or reduce a graha's power, such as the domains which the rules, its tenants in those domains, drishti, rashi, etc.
