Shad-bala bala = power strength might vigour force validity shad = to sink down to sink into to sit down Shadbala totals are the sum of numerous smaller calculations and weighting of those individual results.  There are various methods for calculating Shadbala, in various Jyotisha traditions.  Shadbala is never the 'cause' of dynamics in a nativity.  Shadbala is a generalized ranking of many factors which can increase or reduce a graha's power, such as the domains it rules, its tenants in those domains, drishti, rashi, etc.
