" During a growth period, you need more amusement, more grounding, and more chocolate ."

If in addition to mantra one might wish to follow Shri Parashara's remedial instruction for giving a cow, buffalo, or goat in charity, this is quite easy to do!

  • www.heifer.org provides life-giving animals and veterinary training to impoverished families throughout our world. It's easy and fun to select a charitable gift from their online catalog of buffaloes, cows, goats and more.

  • http://www.oxfamamericaunwrapped.com/animal-gifts.html also offers a lovely catalog of animal-donation selections

  • Even if you're having an easy dasha, these beloved and useful animals make wonderful celebratory gifts!

Seva
  • Charitable service is often a benefit of Guru periods, which are generous and compassionate by character.
  • Charity should not be random but rather very carefully targeted.
  • The trick is to target beneficiaries who have precisely one's own dilemma, but in a slightly worse degree.
  • Then offer help as one is qualified and able to offer.
  • Then, observe the beneficiaries, how they act, and what are their expectations-assumptions-priorities-plans?
  • One will enjoy a quick answer to the question which propelled one into karmic service in the first place.

Other remedial and supportive measures appropriate to Guru Mahadasha:

  • for some nativities (not Thula and not Makara) the gemstone for Guru may be enjoyed

  • for all nativities, wearing of peach-toned, orange, and golden colored clothing will support Guru's generosity and His tolerant, inclusive worldview

  • for all nativities, increase of dharma wisdom via acts of charity and service teaching(paid or volunteer) = very suitable offerings to Lord Guru

Brihaspati's job in the nativity = to carry forward from the Akashic account books, credit from charitable works offered in past lives.

  • When we have been compassionate and caring of the welfare of others in past lives, a credit is established.+Li>

  • & When writing out the script of the present lifetime, the spirit may decide to use this credit as a counterbalance to excessively hard karma.

Mahadasha of Guru is typically rather pleasant and expansive throughout its 16 years duration..

  • However, not all bhukti periods of the Guru Mahadasha= equally easy

  • due to the different roles that Brihaspati can play in regard to the 12 radix lagna and the 12 radix Chandra lagna positions.

Guru mahadasha + Guru bhukti

What to Expect? Evaluate the placements of Guru.

Consider the rashi + bhava owned and occupied + the angle from the mahadasha-pathi to the bhukti-pati + age of the native (has the graha matured?) + incoming and outgoing graha-drishti + current transits.

  1. Guru in Mesha
  2. Guru in Rishabha
  3. Guru in Mithuna
  4. Guru in Karkata * uchchamsha
  5. Guru in Simha
  6. Guru in Kanya
  7. Guru in Thula
  8. Guru n Vrischika
  9. Guru in Dhanushya
  10. Guru in Makara * neechchamsha
  11. Guru in Kumbha
  12. Guru in Meena

  1. Guru in bhava-1 * dik-bala
  2. Guru in bhava-2
  3. Guru in bhava-3
  4. Guru in bhava-4
  5. Guru in bhava-5
  6. Guru in bhava-6
  7. Guru in bhava-7
  8. Guru in bhava-8
  9. Guru in bhava-9
  10. Guru in bhava-10
  11. Guru in bhava-11
  12. Guru in bhava-12

Growth challenges via dushthamsha angle = difficult at first, better with experience, good results overall. Effects during the bhukti periods of graha = located:

  • 3rd-from the bhava occupied by Guru

  • 6th-from the bhava occupied by Guru

  • 8th-from the bhava occupied by Guru

  • 12th-from the bhava occupied by Guru

Where Guru = L-3 or L-6 (natural bhava of enemy Budha):

In the overall context of good will and the advance of dharma within the life of the native , also expect some arguments both mental and physical, both internal and external. These can be handled with compassion and intelligence; nevertheless they must be encountered and managed.

  • Thula lagna or Thula Chandra: Guru =L-3+L-6[mental health + fleshly health]

  • Maraka lagna or Makara Chandra : Guru =L-3+L-12

  • Some health concerns for Karkata lagna (physical health) or Karkata Chandra(emotional health) because Guru = L-6

Where Guru = L-8 or L-12:

  • Mesha lagna - Mesha Chandra Guru =L-9+L-12 (Although Guru = the teaching L-difficulties during foreign travel or in sanctuaries.)

  • Vrishabha lagna - Vrishabha Chandra and Simha lagna - Simha Chandra because Guru = L-8. (Sudden, forced or catastrophic change - but with favorable outcome.)

The Final Bhukti brings end-of-cycle, conclusion, closure.

Chidra-dasha, the final few months of "cutting" (chid = cut), may sever attachment to completed, outdated behaviors so that one may move forward upon the spiritual path.

"chid" from Koeln Sanskrit dictionary

chid (chedi) - IE cognate Latin 'scindo' (rescind)

  • to cut off, amputate, cut through, hew, chop, split, pierce

  • to divide, separate from

  • to destroy, annihilate, efface, blot out

  • Passive = to be split or cut, break

  • to cut off. to cause to cut off or through cutting, cutting off. cutting through

  • splitting, piercing

  • destroying, annihilating, removing

  • the divisor, denominator

Guru Mahadasha + Rahu bhukti

  • chida-dasha

  • duration of the bhukti: 29 months

  • graha pakvata: Rahu periods yield improved results after age 48 = the age of maturity for Rahu

What to expect from a Rahu period? Evaluate the placements of Rahu.

Consider the rashi + bhava owned and occupied + the angle from the mahadasha-pathi to the bhukti-pati + age of the native (has the graha matured?) + incoming and outgoing graha-drishti + current transits.

Now, consider each of these factors again with reference to Rahu's lord. Rahu gives the effects of His occupied bhava AND the bhava which are ruled by His lord.

During the Guru mahadasha the energy trajectory moves successfully into guidance roles such as teacher-preacher, father, professor, tour-guide, scout-master, guru.

Guru is naturally suited to wise, inclusive, philosophical and humanistic roles such as patriarch or high-priestess

Guru+Rahu period introduces Rahu-agents (often paternalistic preacher-teachers) who promise religious, multiplying , wisdom-and-abundance centered lifestyles which involve providing shepherd-like pastoral guidance (Guru) to a flock of some sort. The flock may be students, children and grandchildren, a religious congregation.

One may indeed self-elevate into the higher rank and its privileges of the Guru-oriented abundant self-multiplying world of philosophical and religious pursuits while in company of the Rahu agent(s).

However toward the end of the Rahu bhukti it may become more obvious that most of the Rahu agent's claims are mere punditry. Rahu may introduce an irregular guru whose teachings are illegitimate, unorthodox, or fraudulent.

Opportunity for Flesh Death

For any lagna Guru-Rahu bhukti is a potential marana particularly but not exclusively if Rahu's lord = L-2 or L-7.

  • For any lagna, Rahu's maraka potential is enhanced if Rahu occupies bhava-2 or Rahu occupies bhava-7.

  • Rahu's characteristic recklessness and willingness to take high risks into order to achieve high privileges can contribute to His involvement with shocking accidental and fatal injuries

However as always the agency of any potential makara is much constrained by the overall pattern of longevity in the nativity, including the nature of randhrasthana counted from radical lagna and 8th from Chandra.

UK-Princess Diana Spencer died in tragic circumstances toward the end of her 16-year Guru mahadasha, toward the end of her Guru-Rahu bhukti.

Simha-Rahu-10 public glamour conjoins a very strong Mangala-movement lagnesha in 10. Mangala + Rahu = the final lethal environment = fast engines, metal, heat, and excessive speed of pursuit. Rahu's lord Surya is not a classic L-2 or L-7 maraka for her Vrischika lagna nativity and yet the accident was typical Rahu: involving foreigners and a foreign land, an illicit or exotic relationship, and ambition for prestige and privilege.

"The luminaries" Surya or Chandra in bhava-8 indicate an abbreviated life line. Diana had L-10 Surya + Budha in 8, making the conditions of her death (8) exceptionally famous and yet still shrouded in mystery.

Das comments =Jupiter conjoins Mars or Jupiter is aspected by Mars or Mars is aspected by Jupiter."

"Mars' Dasha will be very fortunate and Jupiter's Dasha will be ordinary.

Q: Hello ,

I am a follower of your website and my wife has learned a lot form it , I am confused with the following as I have currently running Shukra Bhukti under Guru Mahadasha and my Shukra is 2nd from lord of Dasha and Shukra is Yuvati's lord Also

Which of the following I should follow more as your website says 2 different things :

45-47 1/2.if Shukra is in a Kendra, Trikona, or in the 2nd from the Lord of the Dasha.

  • There will be gain of wealth, happiness from wife, meeting with the king, increase in the number of children, conveyances and cattle, enjoyment of music, society with men of learning, Availability of sweetish preparations, giving help and assistance to kinsmen etc.,

48-50. if Shukra is Dhana's, or Yuvati's Lord

  • Loss of wealth, fear of premature death, Antagonism with wife etc.will be experienced.

A: Namaste,

The lines you have copied (45-47 1/2.and 48-50) are quotations from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, the great classic of Jyotisha commentary written in approximately the era of 550-600 C.E.

  • The original shloka could be vastly older than that, but the occasion of actually writing down the oral tradition is linguistically dated approx. 5th-6th century of the Common Era.

  • The lines are the product of long centuries of Sanskrit metered-chanting, which have recently been rendered into English;

  • These translations follow the rules of Sanskrit prosody not the rules of English prosody; therefore they can sound a bit choppy in English for sure.

48-50. if Shukra is Dhana's, or Yuvati's Lord , Loss of wealth, fear of premature death, Antagonism with wife etc. will be experienced,

  • These shlokas refer to house lordship, not house occupation.

  • Naturally, if Shukra is the maraka L-2 or L-7, Shukra's periods will contain awareness of death.

  • Shukra becomes a killer for Mesha, Kanya, and Vrischika lagna. Shukra = a double-killerfor Mesha lagna.

  • Shukra is a pleasure-lover, so when Shukra becomes aware of the presence of death, He does not welcome this threat of losing the flesh-body's access to sensual pleasures.

Thus Shukra feels fear or frustration about death.

  • Shukra is not a wise graha. He is very materialistic and He likes it that way. (Shukra is Shani's BFF.) He does not accept death very gracefully despite His overall graciousness! Death logically gives a loss of material wealth. The basic reality of death is that "you can't take it with you".

  • Also., if Shukra = L-7, seventh = 6th [poverty]-from-2nd, which means that certain set-ups for L-7 Shukra can stimulate "poverty of money" I.e. 6th-from-2nd.

  • One of the major causes of the native 's experience of poverty of money is the agent who spends most of one's money and that is the business partner, attorney, consultant, adviser, or wife - the agents of Yuvati.

Antagonism with wife comes from Shukra's capacity as lord of dhana bhava. bhava-2 is inevitably the 6/8-from-7th.

  • bhava-2 rules second marriage and if the culture permits more than one wife (which most cultures traditional ly did) then the first wife rather naturally resents the second wife.

  • Yet if a man starts to gain some wealth due to Shukra one of his first acquisitions is typically an additional wife.

bhava-2 also rules the mouth.

  • When Shukra is empowered in relation to bhava-2, the mouth is looking for sweet pleasures, especially ladies and wines. First wife is likely to take a dim view of these delights, thus antagonism with wife.

Here is where you can see the effect of the Sanskrit shloka "telegraphic" style creating a choppy English output.

  • The initial explanatory causative phrases "because Shukra becomes the lord of the 6/8-from-yuvati ruling marriage partner" or "because yuvati is also 6/8-from-2nd ruling hoards of wealth" are not articulated.

  • These missing parts occur mainly because most of the people who received these shloka for passing down through memorized chants did indeed already know the vidya pretty well, so it wasn't much trouble for them to fill in the connections.

  • However, it's undeniably hard on us modern beginners to get the transmission in bits and pieces.

  • We have to fill in the missing pieces with logic.

Similarly, Parashara says -- 45-47 1/2. if Shukra is in a Kendra, Trikona, Or in the 2nd from the Lord of the Dasha.

  • There will begain of wealth;happiness from wife; meeting with the king, increase in the number of children, conveyances and cattle, enjoyment of music, society with men of learning, Availability of sweetish; preparations; giving help and assistance to kinsmen etc.,

This shloka is about graha in occupation of a bhava, not lordship.

  • A material-sensual benefic in kendra (corners) or trikona gives materially pleasurable results.

  • Shukra = karaka for sweet tastes (sugar, alcohol) pleasures of the five senses, valuable things, beauty, money, art, music, and harmonious relationships.

  • Naturally all of these pleasures will arrive if the sukha-graha is well placed.

  • Again some of the lead-in phrases are not fully articulated.

If Shukra occupies domains 1, 5 or 9 pleasures of children are enhanced.

  • In house-10, prestigious meetings with the king and the enhanced public reputation it brings. In house-9, men of learning (universities, temples).

  • The 2nd-from reveals matters of the family lineage.

  • During periods of a well-disposed Shukra that is 2nd-from the mahadasha pati, one may find one's resources (house-2, 2nd-from) have increased to the point where onecan enjoy the pleasure of giving help and assistance to those in one's family lineage, the kinsmen.

And so on, with Shukra giving the pleasures derived from accumulation of resources (wealth) and fleshly sensual experience, according to the house in which Shukra lives.

I hope it is clear that there is no contradiction whatsoever in the BPHS [ Chapter 56: Effects of the Antaraa Dashas in the Dasha of Guru] shloka 45-50 re: Shukra. There are however persistent literary translation issues, and for these let us have compassion for both the translator and the reader!

  • 45-47 refer to house position,

  • whereas 48-50 refer to house lordship.

  • One may have simultaneously many pleasurable accumulations of wealth and prospects for sensual experience (esp through marriage/women) and be at the same time afraid to lose these things, or be in conflict with someone who doesn't want one to have these things.

Wishing you best success in Jyotisha studies,

Sincerely, Barbara Pijan Lama, Jyotisha
