Bepin Behari radix navamsha charts -- Barbara Pijan Lama Jyotisha

Atmakaraka = Surya (politics)

Rising Degree of the Navamsha Lagna = Service to Others = 01 Dhanushya (Sagittarius)

According to M.C. Jain in The Stars and your Future (p 108) 01 Dhanau = the "Degree of Triumph":

"Denotes one of the finest intellect who is gifted with persuasive eloquence.

  • the native is poetic, reverential and inspiring.

He reaches a certain power and dignity after striving through worries and inharmonies.

His will is firmly directed and cannot be broken,

for above all he has faith in himself

and knows his power.

Predicts an honorable life, may become a religious luminary or judge."

Bepin Behari Vimshottari Dasha-1 = Barbara Pijan Lama Jyotisha

Bepin Behari Vimshottari Dasha 1 - Barbara Pijan Lama Jyotisha

Behari's extraordinary dual career spanned two demanding professions: traditional Jyotisha, and industrial development economics.

  • Primarily an economist, Behari was educated at both Patna University and the University of London. He retired from service as a diplomat of the government of India.

  • While simultaneously holding administrative, advising, and executive roles of substantial importance, during the period of India's mid-century industrialization, Behari also maintained a scholarly practice in Jyotisha.

Due to his international cultural fluency, and his training in western social sciences, he published primarily in English. Thus his Jyotisha viewpoint became accessible to the post-WW-2 English-reading generations.

Behari published more than a dozen Jyotisha books in English, most of which are still in print and highly valued today.

  • His spiritual perspective is distinctively theosophist, and he draws deeply from that belief tradition in his interpretation of esoteric Jyotisha.

  • For some, Behari's theosophical interpretive framework is constricting or even offensive; for others it is liberating. Behari's writings are often deeply reflective, often struggling for clear expression, but praiseworthy for the effort and sometimes shockingly insightful.

His economics publications appear to have faded into academic history, but Behari's Jyotisha writings continue to inspire controversy, confusion, and debate.

Kendra

The overall nativity is quite striking.

Graha occupy

  • all four chara rashi (cardinal signs) kendra in radix;

  • in all four dviswa-bhava (mutable) kendra in navamsha.

Swakshetra Graha:

  • Guru - 9

  • Kuja - 1

  • Shani - 7

  • Chandra - 4

Lord of the 10th uchcha in seventh. Powerful and stable career. Longevity in career. High dignity and respect provided to the native in public life, despite whatever internal frustrations may evolve.

Also in kendra: Shukra in a friendly Rashi, Budha in a neutral rashi, Rahu-Ketu in the axis of Chandra.

Bepin Behari Shad Bala bar chart

Yuvati bhava 10th-from-10th - day-to-day interactions, daily reality, advising

Uchcha Shani - matters of high importance to the conduct of public affairs. Ministers and educated professionals. See Shani's remarkable strength in ShadBala.

Drishti from the swakshetra Kuja in lagna shows a competitive and adversarial quality, of a sporting and masculine nature, in the advising behaviors. Abundant physical energy and a blunt Kuja dosha as well. Only Shani's uchcha austere adherence to marriage vows keeps the core relationships chaste. Opportunities for challenge and competitive excitement are found within the business partnerships.

House-7 being 10th-from-10th is always central to career. It is our daily interactions and agreement-building consensus with peers which form the foundation of professional achievement. A good career must be strong in both house-7 and house-10.

Shani drishti to Chandra makes a hard worker, materialistic, often unable to accept direct physical affection, but appreciative of duty performed, laws abided, and material acquisition.

Surya - ego identification
  • lord of radix karakamsha
  • lord of 2nd from Chandra
  • lord of 5th from radical lagna

Ravi is ego-identified as a literary author [L-5], a policy director [Makara], and also as a spiritual teacher [Surya/Simha in bhava-8 of navamsha].

Long-term duty and dedication to public service is indicated by the muted Surya-Shani pair in 6th dashamsha. They too are in service of bhava-10 radix, through their lord Makara Shukra in 10.

Yet the overall career, carrying heavy responsibilities in government administration, is brightened by Dhanau lagna in D-9 and D-10, ruled by the religious and optimistic ninth-house Dhanau Guru in radix.

Guru-Dhanushya-9 provides the theosophical perspective, and expands orthodoxy
Chandra
  • lord of 4th from radical lagna
  • Chandra-Mangala Yoga
  • Chandra-Mangala yoga by drishti to bhava-4. Does indeed bring in the wealth.

  • Kapata yoga in bhava-4. Not so good for a stable home life. The home is much influenced by foreigners, due to Rahu; and sharp conflict, due to Kuja

  • Kahala Yoga - L-4 in strength receiving drishti of L-10 Shani in strength. Extreme stubbornness. Native does things one's own way, takes leadership roles, asserts influence, will not be swayed by others due to strong foundations in life (4).

10th-from- Chandra - psycho-emotional true service
  • Kuja again. Self-defining and overflowing with physical combative energy. Luckily that energy is skillfully but firmly constrained by the uchcha Shani. Result is many challenges and obstacles overcome - some instantly, through heroic action; most slowly and patiently, through maturity and the turning of the wheels of government bureaucracy and time.

  • Jyotisha studies must have provided a healthy outlet for the creative, competitive, individualistic energies of Kuja when the pressures of large, conformist organizations and their internal entropy would begin to weigh heavily on this bright independent thinker. Jyotisha provides the "big picture" view that his Chara square craves, while promising more action than the procedural rules of diplomacy could ever hope to produce.

Lord of 10th Navamsha = Budha

Budha lord of Navamsha-10 occupies radix-10 in conservative, government-service Makara, suggesting a profession of government service at the highest levels of leadership and ministerial advising.

  • Budha has many advantageous connections in this nativity.

  • Budha's relationship to the highly auspicious Shukra (Shukra gains neechcha bhanga in navamsha) brings wealth and beauty into his life through "luxury" in all forms.

  • The weirdest of Budha's numerous connections is with Ketu, and drishti from Azlesa Chandra.

  • This association for Budha transforms Behari's nativity from a straightforward, talented, rule-abiding and steadfast public servant - a master of policy and planning detail - into an economist-by-day, Jyotishi-by-night lifestyle.

  • Lord of Kumbha = bhava-11 for income = uchchamsha Shani. the native is steadily employed and increasingly goal-gainful over time. His work is honest and his maerial productivity is high.

Rahu in bhava-4

Ketu in bhava-10

Chidakaraka Ketu

  • brings eccentric, esoteric Jyotisha perceptions into the house of Profession.

  • Ketu, lord of Mula navamsha, creates the path of Swa-Dharma.

  • Since Ketu occupies the 10th radix in a sign of uchcha (responsible) Shani and Ketu has lots of company (Surya, Budha, Shukra, and drishti from Chandra + Rahu) the path is very demanding and complex. But, the spiritual influences of Jyotisha governed by Ketu do provide the most satisfying and long-lasting career effects.

Chalakaraka Rahu

  • unpredictable, unusual, or unstable conditions in the early childhood home; parents unpredictable; disrupted or foreign education

lagnesha- location of life force, natural sphere of action
  • Kuja is independent, adolescent, religiously confident through the drishti of Kuja, somewhat impulsive in the home, in marriage, and in tantric interests.

  • Uchcha Shani in bhava-7 protects the marriage.

  • Home life must have been frequently disrupted - as would be natural for a world-traveling diplomat in a rapidly changing international economy.

  • Kuja also give impatience in education. the native might have been, perhaps, not the ideal passive student.

In Planets in Signs and Houses, Bepin Behari himself writes:

comment on L-5 Surya/Makara/10:

You are very ambitiousandhard-working.

However, you often fail to hit the target, and consequently feels immensely frustrated.

comment on L-3+L-6 Budha/Makara/10:

You find that mental acuity, sociability, and comprehension of the deeper principles of nature and society depend on experiences gathered by the soul throughout many incarnations.

You work virtuously to acquire knowledge, especially esoteric wisdom, but somehow remain at the periphery of enlightenment.

You are very opinionated and cannot be submissive to anyone, as a result of which you fail to make much headway in life.

comment on Ketu/Makara/10 [Lord Shani]

You are an idealist, though an unhappy one, uninterested in life.

comment on L-2+L-7 Shukra-Makara-10

Personal comforts are taken away; you give these up in order to realize your mission in life.

You have tremendous sensitivity, which allows you to establish an immediate rapport with others, but this same quality also makes you suffer emotionally because you sympathize with the masses.

You may also display extraordinary skill in the creative arts.

Karmaa Bhava [10th-from-radix-lagna]; L-10 and Aspects to L-10 - public statusSurya + Ketu + Budha + Shukra

Shadbala chart above supports the expectation that this native is an exceptionally detailed and dedicated worker. The work ethic is quite distinctive. the native places duty to country, kith, and kin above all other values and pursuits.

Uchchamsha Shani lord of bhava-10 for career and public leadership, very much strengthened in kendra-7, suggests very strong leadership roles in government or large corporation settings.

bhava-10 also receives drishti of Rahu and Azlesa L-4 Chandra. The total picture is a highly distinguished career. But, as Behari points out, certain contradictions between the individually positive influences (e.g., Shani-vs-Kuja, Ketu in 10+ L-6 Budha in 10) do generate some personal frustration.

Kuja - Jyotisha

Kuja in Mithuna in both D-9 and Dashamsha. Kuja/Mithuna in D-9 is a karaka for astrological profession. Only in retirement from government service during Kuja mahadasha, did Behari have the "leisure" to begin editing his writings to make them less obscure, to negotiate with foreign publishers, and to write new materials, which made his Jyotisha viewpoint internationally known. Clearly Kuja is not a leisurely graha - He is competitive, energized, and ambitious. Behari was vigorously active in Kuja period despite his age, producing some of his best Jyotisha work then.

Kuja can do this demanding material and spiritual work due to power of Ruchaka Yoga, the power of panchmahapurushaswakshetra Mangala in lagna combined with Bhagyavahana Yoga, meaning lord of 9 in 9 while lord of 1 in 1.

See the relationship between Guru L-9 and Kuja L-1 to appreciate the long-term power of Mangala to produce some potent Jyotisha works even after a long and demanding career in public service. Most people would have stopped producing books much earlier - say, at the end of a 40-year service career - but Behari was writing Jyotisha books until the day of his death.

But also appreciate that Behari does things his own way at all times, including that he does not cow-tow to conventionalist piety in his Jyotisha interpretations. Deeply and authentically religious. But due to strength of Shani, Guru, and Kuja -- there is no need to pander to the pundits.

Rahu

  • Rahu was more a period of accolades for valuable cultural-education work already accomplished.

  • Chandra as L-4 rules "the end of things".

Guru

  • Behari was born into a Budha mahadasha due to his Budha-ruled Azlesa Chandra. Therefore his lifespan did not include a mahadasha of either Guru or Shani. The effects of both of these powerhouse graha must be experienced via drishti upon other graha.

  • Cheerful and religious Guru casts drishti upon radix Kuja and upon bhava-5 for literary authorship (in Simha, the realm of royal Vishnu and divine intelligence) while Guru and Kuja are together in D-10. Kuja period really brought forth the effects of lord of the temple L-9 Guru, through Jyotisha writing and lecturing.

  • The only graha lying outside the grand square in radix is the most excellent L-9-in-9, Guru. Guru's main contribution (since He will not have His own Vimshottari mahadasha) is the benefic ray He casts upon Ruchaka-Yoga Mangala.

  • Guru can have a karako bhavo nashto down-side affecting the father. The father may be over-confident of his own knowledge, pompous, or a priest locked into ritual who is unable to see the truth underlying ceremonial religion.
