In The Astrology of the Seers, page 229-233, the eminent American Jyotishi David Frawley outlines the following system of planets-to-chakras:

(Sun-Moon are considered as a single planet.)

This arrangement is quite sensible given the job of each chakra.

  • Saturn does 1st-chakra grounding/stabilizing

  • Jupiter does 2nd-chakra procreating/creating

  • Mars does 3rd-chakra competition/action

  • Venus does 4th-chakra loving/embracing

  • Mercury does 5th-chakra speaking/articulating thoughts

  • Sun-Moon do 6th-chakra perceiving/intuiting.

  • (7th chakra might be speculatively said to be ruled by Rahu-Ketu.)

Chakras and Graha = exaltation

The Astrology of the Seers, page 229-233, also describes something even more interesting: Frawley's chakra-based explanation of planetary exaltation signs

Frawley's description of energy point along the central nadi channels being the rationale for exaltation points certainly makes sense, especially in lieu of any other explanation of uchcha and neecha positions.

  • Chandra gives his best results at heart chakra on the lunar side = unconditional feeling love

  • Mangala gives his best results at root chakra on the solar side = maximum action and accomplishment

  • Budha gives his best results at The throat chakra on the solar side = maximum outward articulation

  • Guru gives his best results at The 3rd eye on lunar side = peak "teachable" intuitive wisdom point

  • Shukra gives his best results at sex chakra on the lunar side = maximum attraction and sensual pleasure

  • Shani gives his best results at heart chakra on the solar side = active but detached pursuit of justice and order

  • Surya gives his best results at navel chakra on the lunar side = fullest expression of vital Willpower

Frawley goes on to explain how uchcha rashi designations reflect the function of the planets on the lower astral (vital) plane as opposed to the sign rulership which reflect how they function in the higher astral (mental) plane of thought and perception.

"The exaltation status is a center-oriented symbolism. The sign-ruling status is a top-oriented symbolism. Yet the exaltation order reflects how the plants function once their energy is integrated properly into our lower nature." --p. 232

Many thanks to Dr. Frawley for his lifetime of service to Jyotisha and traditional Vaidik arts
