Surya in Makara = government

Ravi receives dik-bala in bhava-10 a highly recognized personality splendid placement for the politics of executive legislative powers, high visibility social roles, royal entitlements, and autocratic style of governance Surya in swabhava of Ravi's bitter enemy Shani radiates structured, regulated (Shani) personal charisma (Surya) in highly visible, highly responsible roles = self-directed, independent style of holding government and regulatory high office iconic figures in corporate and institutional leadership
creative, flamboyant, center-stage, dramatic, top-of-hierarchy roles - a leader in one's field of expertise
"fearless leader " = Surya = anti-Shani = fearless
Surya's brilliant light permits the native to "see" into government institutional bureaucratic hierarchies; step-wise routinized, orderly lawful processes; iconic roles; leadership responsibilities and public reputation The universe seems to revolve around oneself when the native occupies the dramatic center of :
Whether more specialized toward money, knowledge, or pleasure depends upon rashi, drishti, and co-tenants of bhava-8. Independence vs. conformity is a core polarity in human life. Tricky position for independent, creative Surya in Shani's house of conformism and social duty. Gives good results under the right circumstances. bhava-10 is the peak of the social prestige pyramid. Strong graha here will inevitably distinguish the native 's performance in public leadership roles. However the Surya-Shani animosity will manifest in career frustration and friction with the forces of law and order. One finds a central position in the drama of government and large corporations.
Although they were both musicians and poets, both either served or were begged to serve in government leadership roles due to dik-bala strength of Surya-10
Ironically this placement indicates a natural leader who is however very independent by nature and thus reluctant to lead -- except at very top levels where they can be protected from the hoi polloi. The common people may resent the effusive solipsism of Surya-10 personal style, even while the mass of worker-consumers enjoy basking in the confidence and pageantry of a king-like leader.
Unless protected by other graha, Surya in 10 with strength (in a rashi of Mangala, Guru, Chandra) will eventually get into trouble via one's insistence upon self-righteous privilege opposed to the law of the common man. If Surya occupies Mesha = uchcha or Simha, the native prefers expressions of personal genius rather than the well-admired but routine management duties imposed by Shani's house. Business success for the owner-operator type who has both creative power and administrative control, even if the business grows quite large. For employee positions (even at the top) it is better if Surya is not too strong in Shani's natural house. Better if the conflict between independent thought and action - a hallmark of empowered Surya - is reduced, and the native can enjoy earning payment for his work, without independent ideas causing too much conflict. If Surya is strong here - and- Shani casts drishti into Bhava-10, the result is likely a stalemate: when native fiercely defends their right to independent behavior but because society expects native to accept the constraints of leadership duty, social validation is withheld. If Shani owns and aspects Bhava-10 containing a medium-power Surya, native may enjoy a solid bureaucratic career in large corporations or government service.

Surya's brilliant effects within bhava-10: |

| In Karkata: |
Surya-10 is very bright, strong, iconic in Karkata-10 leadership roles use the image of the Self to promote the corporate or institutional agenda customary, rhythmic, home-based Folkways. |

Strong executive leadership capability, individual intelligence, confident decision-making skills. the native has faith in one's own ability to lead, whether the facts support this faith or not. Invincible in one's own view but potentially arrogant. Better results with a restraining drishti from Shani. In general, highly auspicious when Surya is well disposed. Parental guidance qualities injected into the public role. If Surya is too strong here, the public will not tolerate the native 's natural independence from social authority, and native may be unable to gain public trust except in elite settings. Special ability to deal with conceptual thought, particularly ethicalissues. Indicates government service, management at higher levels of large organizations, and political appointments. This person has the karma/dharma to make decisions which affect many people. If Surya is well disposed the leadership demonstrated in these top positions is exemplary. If Surya is poorly disposed there may be weak decisions, unreliable behavior in positions of authority, micro-managing, or petty controlling authoritarianism |

Romanticization of leadership roles. Infuses mundane regulatory duties with high prestige. This is an awkward position of false kingship (10 = 6th from 5th, the natural king) but it improves with maturity. Karmasthana is Shani's swabhava but also a kendra-10 where Surya gains dik bala . Surya-10 does well over the period of a lifetime, very much tempered by life experience, and flourishing after age 60. Depends significantly on the natal position of Shani. If Shani is also in kendra, the native may have very fixed ideas about proper leadership. However one would be less prone to solipsism or excess pride and have a stronger dose of social realism (Shani). Surya-10 usually does come to realize, via life experience, that social leaders, even in exalted positions of power and high titles, are indeed mere human beings. Leaders are inherently imperfect; they are themselves subject to a myriad of social and psychological pressure. In reality, leaders are often lacking in ideal qualifications. They may be unethical, immature, and inappropriate. However if their karma calls for public high position, they will receive public high position. If such a level of realization could penetrate the mind of the native with a strong Surya in Bhava-10, one becomes an extremely wise, mature, capable, stable, and effective leader. Otherwise there is great unhappiness regarding the gap between kingly and the common law, between Surya's natural autocracy and Shani's natural bureaucracy. Nevertheless Surya is capable of leadership in 10 . |

Das / Behari commentary re: Surya in Karmasthana |
"This placement draws you to the center of power. You acquire a role in the administration of your country.
It may be observed that except for professional and vocational success, there is no relieving feature in your life.

"The Sun occupying [Karka] provides vitality to your social interaction.
It is not just social eminence which attracts people to you,
Your sense of responsibility is enormous; whenever you accept the responsibility for any task,
Your organizing skills are so extraordinary,
that everyone from whom you require service or work willingly cooperates with you." |
