Ravi receives dig-bala in bhava-10

Indicates a socially recognized personality

splendid placement for the politics of executive legislative powers, high visibility social roles, royal entitlements, and autocratic style of governance

Surya in swabhava of Ravi's bitter enemy Shani radiates structured, regulated (Shani) personal charisma (Surya) in highly visible, highly responsible roles =

self-directed, independent style of holding government and regulatory high office

iconic figures in corporate and institutional leadership

creative, flamboyant, center-stage, dramatic, top-of-hierarchy roles - a leader in one's field of expertise

"fearless leader " = Surya = anti-Shani = fearless

Surya's brilliant light permits the native to "see" into government institutional bureaucratic hierarchies; step-wise routinized, orderly lawful processes; iconic roles; leadership responsibilities and public reputation

The universe seems to revolve around oneself when the native occupies the dramatic center of :

  • government, social institutions, hierarchies, bureaucracies, law and order, rules and regulations, executive power,

  • legislation and legal authority, reputation and rank, respect and dignity,

  • elite positions, high visibility, top of the pyramid,

Surya in 4th-from-7th = the mate's education, parents or mate's childhood foundation

Whether more specialized toward money, knowledge, or pleasure depends upon rashi, drishti, and co-tenants of bhava-8.

Independence (Surya) vs. conformity (Shani) is a core polarity in human life. Bhava-10 is a tricky position for independent, creative Professor Surya.

The native must create (Surya) a respectable (Shani) yet self-determined (Surya) career role that balances personal intelligence against conformity to public standards and social duty. Gives good results under the right circumstances.

  • "Walden" naturalist, abolitionist Henry David Thoreau is a good example of a "public intellectual" who successfully combined independent thought with public respect. Thoreau was a highly independent philosophy writer with a convention-flaunting personal lifestyle. However, he gained positive public reputation via his passionate and well-reasoned public speeches against slavery. His speeches were published (Mithunaya) and widely circulated, adding to his reputation as a logical and convincing public intellectual.

Karmasthana = the peak of the social prestige pyramid. Strong graha in 10 will inevitably distinguish one 's performance in public leadership roles. However the Surya-Shani animosity will manifest in career frustration and friction with the forces of law and order.

Professor Surya =pitri-karaka * qualities of the Father

Father holds a highly visible position (10) and is known to his society at large. Whether his reputation is positive or negative depends upon the 10th lord * karmapathi, and its angle to Professor Surya-10.

  • USA civil rights 1929-1968 Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. has Surya + Budha in Makara-10. Rev. King's father was himself a distinguished church preacher and respected social leader. The father's primary social role as religious preacher is shown by L-10 Shani in Dhanushya-9. Karmasthana is weakened when L-10 occupies 12th-from-swakshetra and also the Surya placement of Rev. King (the son) is relatively weak by rashi in Makara. The social prominence of both father and son is evident; yet the capacity for material achievement is limited by the rashi and the angle. Both figures were instrumental and inspirational in the quest to achieve full civil respect for African-Americans, but their nativities show that visibility is shaped by membership in a religious community and privilege to hold government office is weak.

  • The father of USA Pres-35 partner, literary editor Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis + Budha. Mrs. Kennedy-Onassis had two fathers in effect, and both of them held high positions in the pyramid. However her natural father was more notorious while her stepfather was more respected. "Black Jack Bouvier" her bio-dad was very widely known as indicated by Surya's Professor Chandra yuti Rahu in 10th-from-10th. Although possessed of a passion-driven glamour (Chandra-Rahu) he was a taboo-breaker (Rahu) and carouser quite similar to the men she later married as husbands. Her mother remarried after 12 stressful years with "Black Jack". Jackie's step-father is represented by 8th-from-Surya = bhava-5. Vidyabhava's Professor Shani occupies 11th from swakshetra, indicating gainfulness and sobriety of the stepfather.

One finds a central (Surya) position in the drama (Surya) of elite ranks of government and large corporations. (10)

Although they were both musicians and poets, both either served or were begged to serve in government leadership roles due to dig-bala strength of Surya-10

  • "Theory of Relativity" 1879-1955 Albert Einstein (he was asked to be president of Israel, but he declined)

  • "Raag Khamaj" master sitarist Ravi Shankar (India)

Ironically this placement indicates a natural leader in the social order, who is however very independent by character and thus reluctant to lead -- except at very top levels where they can be protected from the hoi polloi.

The common people may resent the effusive solipsism of Professor Surya-10 personal style, even while the mass of worker-consumers enjoy basking in the confidence and pageantry of a king-like leader.

  • King of Nepal reigned 1972-2001 Birendra Bir Bikram Shah- the last Hindu king, worshipped in government rituals as an incarnation of Vishnu

Unless protected by other graha, Surya in 10 with strength (in a rashi of Mangala, Guru, Chandra) will eventually get into trouble via one's insistence upon self-righteous privilege opposed to the law of the common man.

If Professor Surya occupies Mesha = uttama or Simha, the native prefers expressions of personal genius rather than the well-admired but routine management duties imposed by Shani's house.

Business success for the owner-operator type who has both creative power and administrative control, even if the business grows quite large.

For employee positions (even at the top) it is better if Surya is not too strong in Professor Shani's natural house-10.

Better if the conflict between independent thought and action - a hallmark of empowered Professor Surya - is reduced, and the native can enjoy earning payment for his work, without independent ideas causing too much conflict.

If Professor Surya is strong here - and- Professor Shani casts drishti into Bhava-10, the result is likely a stalemate: when native fiercely defends their right to independent behavior but because society expects native to accept the constraints of leadership duty, social validation is withheld.

If Professor Shani owns and aspects Bhava-10 containing a medium-power Surya, native may enjoy a solid bureaucratic career in large corporations or government service.

  • One seeks praise and recognition for one's leadership responsibilities, empowerment to enforce or provide social regulation, position in large, orderly, pyramid-shaped organization

Surya's brilliant effects within bhava-10:

Surya in 2nd-from-9th, wealth from guru-level guidance, from the father's tutelage, from credit for worthy actions performed in current and parallel lives .

Surya in 3rd-from-8th, much professional communication regarding confidential information and hidden assets. A career in managing secrets.

Surya in 4th-from-7th, property acquired through the spouse and business partnerships.

Surya in 5th-from-6th, handsome and intelligent enemies. The father is knowledgeable about conflict and imbalance in human relations. the native or one's father may have romantic relations with servants.

Surya in 6th-from-5th, animosity toward children and romantic partners caused by ego-membrane need to be in the leadership role. May act with hostility toward creativity and expressions of individual genius. Tends to move in lockstep with large organizations.

Surya in 7th-from-4th, strong ego-membrane identification with the mother's people. Moral sense of Right based in contracts and promises according to the cultural roots.

Surya in 8th-from-3rd, sudden, forced changes in the relationship with siblings and in one's own mental perspective. Mental illness or volatility in the character of the father.

Surya in 9th-from-2nd, excellent fortune financially, benefiting from a natural wisdom in handling hoarded monies and recorded knowledge. Good fortune from remarriages of one's own first spouse.

Surya in 10th-from-10th, strong ego-membrane identification with government and large hierarchical organizations.

In Karkata: Professor Surya-10 is very bright, strong, iconic in Karkata-10

leadership roles use the image of the Self to promote the corporate or institutional agenda

customary, rhythmic, home-based Folkways.

Strong executive leadership capability, individual intelligence, confident decision-making skills.

Professor Surya has confidence in one's own ability to lead, whether the facts support this faith or not.

Invincible in one's own view but potentially arrogant.

Better results with a restraining drishti from Professor Shani.

In general, highly auspicious when Professor Surya is well disposed. Parental guidance qualities injected into the public role.

If Professor Surya is too strong here, the public might not tolerate one's characteristic independence from social authority, and Surya may be unable to gain public trust except in celebrity or elite settings.

Indicates social recognition for executive roles in government service, management at higher levels of large organizations, and especially political appointments. Surya has the karma (action) and dharma (wisdom) to make decisions which affect many people.

If Professor Surya is well disposed in karma-sthana, individualistic  leadership demonstrated in these top positions is exemplary and one successfully merges the bureaucratic ideation of hierarchical stepwise models with the brilliant independence of clear and decisive policy making. Generally there is a preference for policy rather than law.

If Professor Surya is poorly disposed in karma-sthana, there may be weak decisions, unreliable behavior in positions of authority, micro-managing, or petty controlling authoritarianism

Romantic view of leadership roles. Infuses mundane regulatory duties with high prestige. This is an awkward position of false kingship (10 = 6th from 5th, the natural king) but it improves with maturity.

Karmasthana is Professor Shani's swabhava but also a kendra-10 where Surya gains dig-bala .

Professor Surya-10 does well over the period of a lifetime, very much tempered by life experience, and flourishing after age 60.

Depends significantly on the natal position of Shani. If Shani is also in kendra, the native may have very fixed ideas about proper leadership. However one would be less prone to solipsism or excess pride and have a stronger dose of social realism (Shani).

Surya-10 usually does come to realize, via life experience, that social leaders, even in exalted positions of power and high titles, are indeed mere human beings. Leaders are inherently imperfect; they are themselves subject to a myriad of social and psychological pressure.

In reality, leaders are often lacking in ideal qualifications. They may be unethical, immature, and inappropriate. However if their karma calls for public high position, they will receive public high position.

If such a level of realization could penetrate the mind of the native with a strong Surya in Bhava-10, one becomes an extremely wise, mature, capable, stable, and effective leader.

Otherwise there is great unhappiness regarding the gap between kingly and the common law, between Surya's natural autocracy and Shani's natural bureaucracy. Nevertheless Surya is capable of leadership in 10 .

Surya in 10 in Thula

BPL commentary

Surya in bhava-10 stations Himself at the center of a government or corporate hierarchy. Surya-10 is typically a regulator for some variety of government service, or an executive director of an organization.

• In the 10th sthana, a swabhava of commonplace Shani, kingly Surya is unable to fulfill His ideal role as the radiant absolute-center flame around which all others orbit and reflect His light. Rather, the light is divided and distributed as countless smaller flames of intelligence organize themselves in a pyramid shape, with each level regulating its downstream in the lower bases.

• Ravi-10 shines in social regulatory and executive decision-making roles, and is admired by inferiors. Yet despite His obvious ability to lead, Ravi-10 in Thula-nichha- is often reluctant to commit to organizational leadership roles due to weak confidence about credibility and credentialing.

• Regal Surya’s disdain for “lowest common denominator” group dynamics makes Ravi-10 somewhat of an outsider who prefers to perch above the pyramid or at its periphery, so as to reduce the inevitable loss of creative individuality and preserve as much personal freedom as possible whilst fulfilling the karma of following Shani’s rules.

• When Ravi occupies swabhava of proletarian Shani, the unique personal intelligence must be harnessed to a greater social institution; there is less personality glitter and more class ranking effort. Greatest success in government service, elite executive levels, policy and decision-making roles. Surya-Thula adds a requirement to work for social justice causes.

• One often earns well as an independent consultant to various government or institutional projects of a law-and-policy nature, establishing protocols, and regulating professional environments. Surya in 4th-from-7th indicates an regulatory educator who may provide continuing professional education to advisers, counselors, balancers, deal-makers, bargainers, couples, diplomats, attorneys, and other workers who craft balanced partnerships and agreements.
