" By working faithfully eight hours a day, you may eventually get to be a boss and work twelve hours a day."

~~ Robert Frost

" There is dignity in work, only when it is work freely accepted."

~~ Albert Camus

Noah's ark was built by amateurs.

The Titanic was built by professionals.

~~ a Yale University management professor issued a grade = " C" for Fred Smith's " unfeasible" student paper

at a time when few people - including business professors -- could think " outside the post-office box" , smith's essay proposed a reliable overnight delivery service

(After graduation from business school, smith the astoundingly successful Federal Express Corp.)

The professor wrote,

" The concept is interesting and well-formed, but in order to earn better than a ‘ C', the idea must be feasible."

Clans of long ago that wanted to get rid of their unwanted people

without killing them,

used to burn their houses down

-- hence the expression " to get fired."

Titles and Positions of Authority (10th-angle)

The government inspector said to the farmer, " I need to inspect your farm."

The old farmer said, " You better not go in that field."

The Ag representative said in a 'wise' tone,

  • " I have the authority of the U. S. Government with me.

  • See this card? I am allowed to go wherever I wish on agricultural land."

So the old farmer went about his farm chores.

Later, the farmer heard loud screams and saw the Department of Agriculture rep running for the fence.

Close behind was the farmer's prize bull.

The bull was madder than a nest full of hornets and the bull was gaining at every step.

The Old Farmer called out: " Show him your card!"

I've read that having one panch-maha-purusha planet guarantees a great career.

Stressful job karma

QUOTATION from B.V. Raman, A Catechism of Astrology [4th edition 1992] part II, page 2

Q. How are predictions on profession made? There are differences of opinion on this point.

  • Some read profession from the 10th house from the Ascendant or the Moon.

  • Some read it from the Navamsha lord-of-the-lord of the 10th.

  • The first house also indicates profession in 'Prasna'.

All these have to be looked into and the strongest one indicates 'profession'." [end quote]

Shri Chakrapani Ullal opined that career patterns are most clearly discerned from a wise judgment of the combined situation of bhava 2-6-10 = the artha trine.

Changes in professional status often occur under influence of the karma-pati, or under influence of yuvati-pati the ruler of the 10th-from-10th

Promotion to higher rank often during period of karmesha or labha-pati, or ruler of 10th-from-10th or ruler of the emotionally dignified , social-ordering, leadership-seeking 10th-from-Chandra.

Karmesha tends to bring rank and status whereas labha-pati tends more toward gain of revenue, but ruler of 11 also signifies every species of material goal and awards for work accomplished so if a promotion is actually a reward for work already accomplished then it occurs under auspice of ruler of 11.

sudden change of career status often beneficial or 'lucky' during Vimshottari Dasha period of ruler of 8th-from-10th = 5th-from-lagna

Dissolution of leadership status or draining of the public reputation = period of dharma-pati = 12th-from-10th

Emotional conditions and reactivity toward the duties and obligations of the adult career = the lord of 10th-from-Chandra

Certain world leaders are extremely capable in their duties yet emotionally resent every minute of it as contradicting their personal tastes yet other leaders are emotionally gratified by the people's love and strongly identified with public respect roles.

Measure the impact of

  • [10th-from-Chandra] = emotional response to leadership duties

  • karma-pati = environment of career, specific tasks of executive position
  • 10th navamsha = career-themes
  • Ruler of 10th navamsha within radix = higher purpose and Gift of the public work roles

Determination of the purposeful Earth-serving nature of public duties and leadership roles = 10th navamsha.

What should I do? How should I serve? What is my career path? What is my leadership potential? Should I innovate or follow the family tradition? How much professional credentialing do I need to obtain? And what about mani-money?

The key to success in all endeavors is simple but it may be difficult for many to put into practice.

  • The key is to follow your desires to the best of your ability . Pursue your interests, allowing your tastes and your intelligence to guide you.
  • BUT refrain from placing expectations upon the outcome.

The reason this works = the heart, the creative spiritual heart, is the true seat of intelligence (not the fearful, punishment-avoiding brain in the head). Therefore anyone who has the courage to follow their own true heart, including to follow that which you think is fun, which you experience as brightly creative, that which is entertaining (but never numbing) and which brings a smile to your face… .

These experiences are the signal that you are moving in the " right" direction. Unfortunately people halt themselves even when they are moving in the highest direction due to fear (which emits from the reptile brain at the top of the brainstem)

They start doubting their entitlements, slide into a fretful state of worrying about public opinion, begin to grant power to false gods such as mani-money, social status, and feel pinched by concern for the opinion of external judges such as parents, religious authorities, peers, or society.

However.... all this heart-centered truth being said, one who is experiencing a Shani bhukti ought to feel " in the heart" that Shani guides along a path of social conformity, rules and regulations, adherence to the law, and respect for the social order. Innovation and creativity are at a low ebb during Shani bhukti. Structured advancement along a strict promotional path via examinations, tests, proofs, and via seniority or longevity are Typically, the way of Shani.

Allow the heart to resonate with the current bhukti and significant gochara movement. The professional path is an organic development, and its structure will become more clear when the interference of anxious worry is removed.

QUOTATION Sarvartha Chintamani, Chapter 2, shloka-7

" When the planet occupying the Navamsha [lagna] is powerful, gain of wealth will be without much effort.

Should it be weak a little wealth will accrue.

The country where the native will acquire wealth will be signified by the sign representing the 10th house or the Navamsha owned by the lord of the 10th house.

But, when this Sign is occupied or aspected by its lord, the native will earn in his own country .

So it shall be if the Navamsha occupied by the lord of the 10th house in an immovable sign.

When the said sign is owned or aspected by planets other than its lord , the person concerned will earn in the place other than his own country.

The livelihood is also determined from the nature of the planet who rules the Navamsha sign occupied by the lord of the 10th house." END QUOTE

Workmates, team, department, cohort, ensemble, entourage = 3rd-from

Wealth acquired, hoard = 2nd-from

bright lights of fame, individual genius, celebrity, creativity = 5th-from

  • (distinguish from respect due to institutional height of the duty post = 10th-from)

Q: How do you delineate the mission for which an individual is born?

A: The answer...

  • depends on what is considered one's individual mission.
  • It may be political, religious, social, cultural, or something else.

Generally, the nature of one's mission in this life can be ascertained by a deep consideration of the tenth house .

  • If planets are powerful there, then the native will succeed in realizing the mission.

  • If afflicted, there will be many hitches."

QUOTATION ~~ B.V. Raman, A Catechism of Astrology [4th edition 1992] part II page 2

" Q: From which Bhava or planet can the place or direction of one's livelihood be ascertained?

A :

Ordinarily the 10th Bhava is the one that denotes all particulars relating to one's livelihood, including the place or direction

the sign that is found on the cusp of that Bhava determines the place or direction one has to look for the line of least resistance.

As regards the planets, the matter is somewhat more complicated.

The lord of the 10th Bhava is in some Navamsha. The lord of that amsha is one of the planets that has major significance .

  • the sign in which that lord is placed,

  • the lord of the 10th,

  • And also the sign in which the Sun is located

have also subsidiary importancer.

All these influences have to be carefully blended and judged in the case of a particular horoscope

and the dominant direction is to be taken note of before prediction as regards place or direction of profession can be made.

  • If the Moon is strong , the above has also to be applied from the position of the Moon also."

Career advice from the Apostle Paul: in a letter called 1 Timothy 3 (New International Version)

" Here is a trustworthy saying:

If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task.

Now the overseer must be above reproach,

  • the husband of but one wife,
  • temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable,
  • able to teach,
  • not given to drunkenness,
  • not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome,
  • not a lover of money.

He must manage his own family well

and see that his children obey him with proper respect.

  • (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God's church)...

He must also have a good reputation with outsiders,

  • so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap."

BPL observations

Factors which promote social visibility, career respect, distinguished reputation, and professional recognition

  • Professor Surya represent visibility which includes leadership roles and public recognition

  • dignified, well-aspected karma-bhava and karmesha-10

  • 10th navamsha and the role of the lord of the 10th navamsha within the radix

  • Karakamsha, arudha lagna, and lagnesha

  • the all-important 10th-from-10th Yuvati bhava (lacking good advisors, the career may be weakened)

karmesha with vikramapathi ruler-of-3

karmesha-10 = favorable relationship to tanu bhava and lagnesha-1

stable and supportively aspected ruler of the emotionally dignified , social-ordering, leadership-seeking 10th-from-Chandra grants emotional consistency in responsible roles

  • periods of ruler of 10th-from-Chandra may be very auspicious for holding socially dignified roles in professions of schooling, parenting, licensing, caretaking, gardening, sheltering, perpetuation and defense of the root culture

Personal life can be effectively compartmentalized from public life so that a person in deep emotional distress may nevertheless be an effective leader. Chandra Himself may be prone to generate polarizing catalysis yet this personal condition need not impede successful execution of public leadership and institutional regulatory duties

ideally, Vimshottari periods of karmesha-10 should occur in mid-life when the native is emotionally mature but still physically strong

  • should the Vimshottari dasha of the karmesha-10 occur at a time in life when society naturally expects to see leadership (after Mangala matures at 28 and before the third Saturn-return age 87) and the mahadasha-pati is strong, aremarkable period of leadership excellence may be predicted

the Karakamsha itself should = kendra or trine also the lord of the karakamsha and the lord of the 10th from the karakamsha

Ruler of the aruda lagna and similarly the lord of karma-pada = Arudha of karma-bhava

Ruler of the 10th navamsha should be healthy and good relationship between karmesha-10 of radix + karmesha-10 of navamsha

by Tenzing Gyatso translated by Tenzin Dorjee, edited by Dexter Roberts (p.20)

" Bodhisattvas give solely out of concern for others, without a self-cherishing attitude.

  • That is the proper way of giving.

Courageous Bodhisattvas risk even their lives to help others, and so, when we are in relatively better, more comfortable situations, we must certainly practice giving.

  • Even if they are threatened, the courageous ones will not engage in improper actions.

Instead, after examining the situation carefully, when they find that certain actions are correct and justified, on the basis of reason, they engage in them even at the risk of their lives.

That is the way of the decent, civilized and courageous ones , who do not follow misleading paths." [end quote]

Effects of the tenth from Karakamsha

" If the tenth from Karakamsha receives a Drishti from, or is conjoined by a benefic, the native will have firm riches, be sagacious, strong and intelligent.

  • A malefic, giving a Drishti to the tenth from Karakamsha, or occupying this Bhava, will cause harm to his profession and deprive him of paternal bliss.

  • Budha and Shukra, giving a Drishti to the tenth from Karakamsha, or conjoining this Bhava, will confer many gains in business and will make him do many great deeds.

  • Surya and Chandra, giving a Drishti to the tenth from Karakamsha, or conjoining this place and receiving a Drishti from, or be in Yuti with Guru, the native will acquire a kingdom."

doggie_lifestyle_unwealthy.gifFactors which can detract from social visibility, career respect, distinguished reputation, and professional recognition

Lifelong situations

if at birth, there are troubled configurations for the karmesha-10 (social-material) and the emotionally dignified , social-ordering, leadership-seeking 10th-from-Chandra (emotional-spiritual) such as combustion, incoming hostile drishti, residing in enemy's rashi

periods of the karmesha-10 and the emotionally dignified , social-ordering, leadership-seeking 10th-from-Chandra

Hazardous for institutional governance and professional accomplishment =

  • 6th-from-karma-sthāna = administrative tasks and daily conversations (3)

  • 8th-from-karma-sthāna = personal creativity and children (5)

  • 12th-from-karma-sthāna = religious philosophy and world travel (9)

Problematic Vimshottari periods of the 6th-from, 8th-from, and 12th-from karma-bhava:

conflict regarding respectable positions during Vimshottari periods of lord of bhratru-bhava = 6th-from-10th from radical lagna

  • also conflict especially with specific agents in the role of servants-employees during periods of any graha residing in bhava-3

  • emotional conflict regarding matters of public respect and reputation during periods of lord of 3rd from Chandra-lagna (especially after age 50)

transformative sudden changes in leadership style due to ego-creativity during Vimshottari periods of the lord of putra bhava = 8th-from-10th from radical lagna

  • also a notable cycle of self-destruction and rebirth in career, especially involving secrets, during periods of any graha residing in bhava-5

  • emotional upheaval - usually leading to a forced self-re-invention - regarding matters of public reputation during periods of lord of 5th from Chandra-lagna (especially after age 50)

dissolution of engagement and loss of attention to matters of public reputation due to philosophical and religious activities during Vimshottari periods of the lord of dharma bhava = 12th-from-10th from radical lagna

  • specific agents of the period of pulling away from public duties in order to pursue religious life include guru, priest, father, professor, preacher.

  • If there are graha residing in bhava-9, the devotional effects are more pronounced and complex. Periods of graha in 9 have the same effect of draining the vitality of karma-bhava-10, although at the same time they .

emotional quietude resulting from withdrawal to a wider [Guru] perspective which usually leads to greater wisdom about world affairs.

Public positions in government or organizational regulation are not emotionally satisfying during periods of ruler of 9th-from-Chandra-lagna (especially after age 50)

but if the graha are strong in 10, the adult native may choose to focus leadership skills within a similar executive role in a university, spiritual institution, or global charity [Guru].

Each Person has a Professional Contribution

QUOTATION from Tenzing Gyatso Consciousness at the Crossroads: Conversations with the Dalai Lama on Brain Science and Buddhism. Zara Houshmand, r.B. Livingston, and B. A. Wallace (Eds.)

" I always believe that each individual human being has some kind of responsibility for humanity as a whole.

  • Particularly, ialways believe that as scientists, you have a special responsibility. Besides your own profession, you have a basic motivation to serve humanity, to try to produce better, happier human beings.

  • Whether we understand consciousness or not, we must produce warm-hearted persons . That is important. I want to express that.

  • Whenever I meet scientists, ialways have to say this.

Through my own profession, itry my best to contribute as much as I can.

  • This proceeds without my being concerned whether another person agrees with my philosophy or not.

Some people may be very much against my belief, my philosophy, but I feel alright. So long as I see that a human being suffers or has needs, ishall contribute as much as I can to contribute to their benefit.

Scientists and medically qualified people can contribute especially. That's different that's a particular context.

A human being needs to be cared for According to your professional calling. You can contribute that's your shared professional responsibility."

Jyotishavidya career profile

Career factors may be confirmed in navamsha D-9 (higher wisdom) and dashamamsha D-10 (higher karma).

However profession is normally understood as a social-material phenomenon, thus all career indicators whether they are first noticed in a varga or via the function of some amsha must be solidly anchored in the social-material functions of the radix D-1.

When a single graha occurs in several important career lagna (exempli gratia, the graha = simultaneously lagnesha, lord of 10th navamsha and lord of dashamamsha -10 ) then that dominant graha comes to define the visible public career.

  • If Shani plays several 10th-from roles, particularly if He rules the 10th navamsha, then one may have a Shani-driven professional experience dominated by regulatory activities, rigidly structured step-wise hierarchies, conformism, fear of punishment, bosses and supervisors, apreponderance rules and an absence of creativity. Often also, demanding, heavy, time-driven, and routinized workload. The social focus is on duty.

  • If Shukra dominates the career pattern, particularly if He rules the 10th navamsha, the professional environments feature financially privileged, luxurious, artistic, femininized artifacts and the social focus is on diplomacy, trust, and relationships.

  • Guru-dominated careers feature teaching and guidance in all of their multifarious global expressions. The native retains a wide philosophical perspective no matter the specific work tasks.

  • And so forth per the karaka labels of the Graha.

Everyone works, but not everyone's work is praised or recognized at the top levels of social importance.

For most nativities, career profile is spread across several radix graha. There are relatively few in the elite. Most careers consist of mixed duty roster and fluctuating visibility, with some periods of obscurity and some periods of relatively high social recognition. However, if the graha = obscured, there may unfold a life of unacknowledged, unappreciated effort. Obscurity in public life may be due to an inner fear of visibility, aneed for individual freedom from institutional rules, or perhaps a lifestyle which requires intentional hiding.

Lord of the navamsha occupied by the radix karmesha-10

Find the radix karmesha-10 , then find that graha in navamsha. According to Phaladeepika, lord of the navamsha occupied by radix karmesha-10 is the single strongest primary significator of public career.

  • If that graha is well-connected to the other career indicators (Exempli gratia, karmesha-10 + yuvati-pati-7, ruler of D-10, surya, etc.) the professional recognition quotient = high. Regulatory duties, including duties in the creative arts which serve the larger social purpose of introducing new ideologies and new behaviors, may be elevated to the elite levels of social hierarchy = highly visible.

  • If that graha is not strongly linked to career indicators - even while ruling a beneficial radical bhava, or having uttama or svakshetra radical status or having other glories not connected with career - there may be professional obscurity. The person might live a very happy life - but one is not intending according to this script to use the energy of public recognition to further one's spiritual learning process.

Building_Budapeshti_Edificia.jpg

House of Government in Budapesht, Hungary

Fame (5) vs Duty (10)

  • Admiration (Surya, 5) is not the same as respect (Shani,10). The ultimate expressions of karma-bhava contain a dose of Shani-fear specifically fears of scarcity, punishment and death.

  • If sparkling Surya's creativity and independence become influential in matters of bhava-10, the institutional agenda will not be served in the Shani-ideal super-regulated fashion we can expect some conflict in public judgment upon a nativity that shows high social responsibility due to a strong karmesha-10 or Shani Yet, also high individual creativity due to a strong vidya-pati-5 or Surya.

Navamsha occupied by radix karmesha-10

As described by Phaladeepika (table above), this rashi is a useful indicator of career also.

Karaka qualities of its lord will reveal the general method of earning a living. Despite the incredible diversity of the modern global economy, the general areas of livelihood which Phaladeepika describes are still accurate (although they do require elaboration).

However, it will be more instructive to look at the specific disposition of the lord of radix karmesha-10 's navamsha - as that graha behaves in radix - to determine the career skills and environment most closely.

" There is no easy formula for determining right and wrong livelihood, but it is essential to keep the question alive.

To return the sense of dignity and honor to manhood, we have to stop pretending that we can make a living at something that is trivial or destructive and still have sense of legitimate self-worth.

A society in which vocation and job are separated for most people gradually creates an economy that is often devoid of spirit, one that frequently fills our pocketbooks at the cost of emptying our souls."

~~Sam Keen

Kundali characteristics of the lord of 10th navamsha

The general environment in which livelihood is earned.

  • 10th-navamsha rashi of Shani directs our expectations toward rote or manual labor conformist or anonymous environments and survival concerns of food, clothing, and shelter.

  • Rashi of Shukra = a sweet environment

  • Rashi of Surya = someplace quite bright + hot

  • Rashi of Kuja = environment militarized, energized pursuit, highly competitive, quest for domination + control

In our modern economy with extended life-spans, people often experience several sequential" incarnations " of their career. The job titles may sound different, but each step in the career ascendance will arise from the same basic skill set.

If the radix position of the 10th navamsha lord = Budha in bhava-6,

  • one may have several related careers all engaged with one or another application of literacy skills reading, writing, calculating regarding medicine, debt or Litigation .

If the radix position of the 10th navamsha lord = Kuja in 4,

  • All the " careers" will be connected via exploratory skills (active engagement, research , problem-solving, exposing and capturing prey) in home and education .

If the radix position of the 10th navamsha lord = Guru in 3,

spirit of teamwork can generate numerous careers in business administration varying among sales, marketing, public relations, advertising etc. .

karmesha-10 th-navamsha = Surya. Native is king-like in leadership style: regal, dignified, confident, inspiring, materially and ethically entitled. Surya = dharmesha-9 radix, home of Chandra: the ego-membrane is limitless. karmesha-10 navamsha Ravi as placed in bhava-12 would normally signify a low-profile career in foreign lands. However, note the amazing double parivartamsha which transforms an obscured Surya into a financial emperor of the world. Much of

Loss of job, career, profession, civic duty, leadership position?

ruler of bhava-9 = 12th-from-10th = career dissolver

  • " 12th-from" angle = dissolution, disengagement, withdrawal, and drain upon matters of the house which immediately succeeds it.

  • Thus each of the lagna have a " career dissolver" graha which, when empowered, can cause the erosion of enthusiasm for leadership roles and redirection of the life-force energies into its own bhava

  • bhukti of dharmesha-9 as ruler of 12th-from-10th usually encourage the native to withdraw from law-imposing and example-setting duties of public life, in order to devote more resources to the study and practice of philosophy and religion.

  • Although the dharma-pati almost always gives excellent results in the development of life wisdom and His work is the most valued at the time of death, in practical life matters the sudden loss of profession dignity can be perplexing.

  • However, when career dissolution is triggered by the dharmesha-9 , the native can rest assured the that final results will be beneficial for all.

  • Lord of 9th-from-Chandra does often generate an emotional pull toward religious concerns in preference to performance of public duty, but unless the Dharmesha-9 from Chandra is coordinated with the Dharmesha-9 from [material-social] kundali indriya-lagna, this pull results more in a feeling of being stretched too thin between religious and social projects, rather than a full material-social withdrawal from professional tasks.

periods of the withdrawing, retiring ruler-of-12 from lagna can have the same effect. The native is ready to withdraw from public personality display and turn inward for reflection. Some measure of closure in matters of ego-membrane development (bhava-1) may be achieved.

  • POTUS-43 Decision Points 1946- George W Bush presidential term = 2001-2008. Mahadasha of ruler-of-12 Budha Began in March of 2006. Still there were remaining nearly two years of his second presidential term.

  • Emotionally he was OK to continue in a leadership role (no breakdown) because Budha = karmesha-10 from Chandra.

  • However, under the physically and socially draining influence of Budha, he completed the duties of the presidency with lackluster performance, and left office with the some of the lowest public approval ratings of any departing POTUS.

Lord of dharma bhava and ruler of 9th-from-Chandra will cause loss of public station and loss of professional position. Note the status of this graha. Is the graha a pleasure-giver subhagraha or a more emotionally-socially challenging papagraha?

If the lord of dharma is a temporal pleasure-giver subhagraha, the loss of a job or fall from superficial public approval is a liberating experience, which relieves [obligation. The natural regulator of karma-bhava is Shani and public duties are tiring. If dharma bhava itself (from lagna or from Chandra) is well disposed, loss of career position, title, symbolic status, leadership roles etc. May be very beneficial.

One might succumb to Survivalist Shani's fear-based thinking in matters of career, believing the scarcity thinking and bondage-to-duty program of Shani's two svabhava: leadership and earnings. Yet, stepping back into wisdom of dharma, consider whether it may be indeed a blessing to lose these heavy obligations and their demanding time schedules [Shani].

Guru as natural regulator of dharma bhava can be the pratya-antara-dasha Vimshottari lord = the straw that breaks the camel's back. May trigger a loss of position, reputation, social dignity - and the sudden, underappreciated freedom to enjoy life free of executive orders and a lockstep time schedule.

On the other hand, if lord of dharma from either lagna or Chandra (from Chandra is a more emotional experience) should be a fear-causing malefic, then losing one's official position, job, or title could be a terrifying, scarcity-paranoia inducing experience.

In the modern economy, job-loss is a frequent occurrence. For nativities with a positive Dharmesha, each loss results in a gain of wisdom (and, typically, alater gain of higher position). For nativities with a compromised or materialistic dharmesha-9 , loss of social leadership positions can be an frightening experience.

Ruler of dashamamsha -10 as this graha behaves in radix

... forms the third major career significator. It is worth looking for the role of the lord of 10th dashamamsha -10 also, but only as a strengthening and confirming proof for otherwise active career Graha.

  • Lord of dashamamsha -10 tells mainly about one's psychic or spiritual disposition within career manifestation. Similar to lord of navamsha exposing how one is operating psychologically within intimate relationships (whether one is consciously aware of one's true behavior or not) - lord of dashamamsha -10 tells what wisdom or psychological agenda we bring into career.

  • Similar to the way lord of navamsha reveals how our partner sees us and what they (often subconsciously) expect from us so the lord of dashamamsha -10 tells what hidden parts of ourselves the professional environment evokes and develops.

  • Lord of dashamamsha -10 may have some qualities, but those qualities might not be distinctive. If lord of dashamamsha -10 is weak in radix, the native will not be motivated to use his career role as a way of getting crucial spiritual information about himself. Again, this is similar to lord of navamsha being weak: the native does not evoke much information from his marriage the marriage is not spiritually too important in this life.

  • By contrast, when lord of navamsha is strong, the native is intensely engaged in his intimate partnerships (for better or worse) because the partnerships are for him a gold mine of psycho-spiritual information about the parts of himself he can only see in the mirror of the partner.

  • If lord of dashamamsha -10 is strong in radix, the public service environment becomes a site of great self discovery. One's professional colleagues become important mirrors onto the Self. Through handling significant public responsibilities which affect many people below, one grows spiritually in understanding of the great forces which direct us all, even while wielding considerable power over his inferiors.

Handling earthly power

Regulating the welfare of a community, naation, or planet provides the same type of test as handling the emotional power over one partner in marriage.

However, the power in dashamamsha expresses as one-to-many relationship as distinguished from the one-to-one relationship of a native to their spouse or, ideally, of the native -to-their-ishtadevata.

  • When the ruker of any varga is empowered in radix -- whether a powerful pleasure-giver subhagraha or a troublesome powerful challenger papagraha, one has programmed highly significant spiritual information into the web of relationships he expects to encounter in the environment described by that varga.

  • Exempli gratia, if the ruler of D-20 is strong, spiritual practice is a site of profound self-revelation to the native . The spiritual path in this case may be smooth such as a wonderful pleasure-giver subhagraha or ragged (as in a violent or harshly challenging papagraha) but the path is crucially important in this lifetime.

  • If the lord of D-3 is strong in radix, then teamwork, siblings, group mental process, competition, and self-made treasuries are powerful venues for self-realization.

D-10 lagnesha strong in kundali?

  • If dashamamsha-10 lord obtains strength in the radical kundali, one has chosen career, public service, and earthly leadership power as a vehicle for self-knowledge on the road to God-realization.

  • The dashamamsha -10 may also be read " internally" that is, the same method as reading the radix, to very finely tune the profile of profession.

Q:

I've really enjoyed reading through your website and as a beginning student of Jyotisha I have a few burning questions.

I'm not asking for a reading but I wonder if you could answer these questions for me since I'm drawn to a specific medical career but am worried that I wouldn't earn enough money if I get the diploma then try to open a practice.

Here are my details [removed]- I just want to know if I'll be successful in this field and when and where and why and how I can really prosper.

Are you teaching? Can you be my teacher?

A : Namaste,

Thanks for your note and thanks also for your compliments on the website. I am always delighted to hear that the materials are proving useful for students of the samayavidya. I'm not presently teaching Jyotisha but I will continue to improve the website materials as time allow. Naturally, answering your questions would require a reading, and free readings are not available. However, ido encourage you to study the nativities of those who have gone before you - successful physicians and scientists - and see if you can find the indicators of ability both intuitive and financial in their charts.

Pay special attention to the 6th bhava for health service ministries, the 10th radical bhava, the 10th navamsha and the dashamamsha lagna. If Ashvini nakshatra features prominently especially the 10th degree of Mesha, success in physical medicine is assured. Also, for quick divinations that can show you a mirror of your own subconscious expectations -- which are indeed the seeds of all reality -- you might enjoy a spread of Tarot Cards. There are several nice free Tarot websites on the internet. As well, i-Ching and other forms of quick divination can show us what we are really thinking.

Wishing you every success,

Sincerely BPL

Q and A

some career questions answered

Q: What are my prospects for adding a new consultancy to my existing career?Or developing a second, successful career at midlife in this new field, in which I have become deeply interested?

A :

If it's Jyotishavidya you're interested in as a second career, look for a prominent Ketu and super-strong graha associated with bhava-12.

Astral information channels through vyaya, and Ketu creates the material detachment necessary to filter out anxiety and see clearly into the etheric/astral worlds.

Ketu makes a person psychic and when Ketu is in a key career house (7 or 10 radix, yuti karmesha-10 , and/or associated with 10th navamsha or 10th dashamamsha -10 ) there will be a" liminal" career for sure.

  • Liminal careers are by definition not recognized by materially-oriented society. Yet, if one has the correct Jyotishavidya markers, shri Ganesha may have His way, and a career dedicated to traveling the clairsentient pathways will evolve.

  • One of the classic indicators for a non-materially-recognized career is 10th-lord in Ari bhava, 10th-lord in Randhra bhava or 10th-lord in Vyaya bhava.

  • The 10th-lord may be a gracious and beneficial graha, but karmesha-10 's placement in a dusthamsha suggests planned misalignments (dus) within the game-plan in the process of achieving social recognition for the value of one's work (10).

  • [Chandra-yuti-Ketu] could suggest an emotional outcaste. Chandra-Ketu = a good yoga for practicing intuitive Jyotisha but it also makes the native prone to tremendous mood swings along a continuum between very spiritual vs. depraved. That's Ketu!

IMO, the best indicators of a person's career whether in Jyotisha or any other discipline, are:

  1. lord of the 10th navamsha , observe the characteristics this graha acquires in the radix (kundali, jataka)

  2. Ruler of Svamsha rashi = navamsha lagna ruler= a major determinant of spiritual direction. Graha in the navamsha first house give an inward thrust that may be partly subconscious but these graha can tell us how the person will behave regardless of who one thinks one should be or how one should act.

  3. Nakshatra pada of Svamsha + its Lord - a clear determinant of natural spiritual direction in this life. This item requires a bit of contemplation. Look at the lords and the sublords, but more importantly, study the characteristics of the rising Nakshatra .

  4. karma-pati - ruler of the 10th radix: Observe the characteristics this graha acquires in navamsha (inner personality) and dashamamsh a (professional service).

  5. yuvati-pati - ruler of the 7th radix : 7th = 10th-from-10th, thereby bhava-7 becomes a reliable career indicator. All careers are built upon advising relationships. The higher the social position, the more advisors one acquires. The quality of advisers may ultimately determine one's success. Of course, one's spouse is the primary counselor in life. Therefore, the marriage partner also plays a determining role in professional life. Observe the characteristics of the yuvati-pati-7 within navamsha (inner personality) and within dashamamsha (professional service).

All the other radix and navamsha and dashamamsha graha play supporting roles. D-9 and D-10 must be consulted in every case for professional identity and actions.

Every individual graha contributes in some way to the professional identity. But radix karmesha-10 and radix Surya are the leading indicators of career.

  • D-9's karmesha-10 as it behaves in radix will accurately indicate not only the profession, environment or industry in which the person develops their career.

If multiple careers, the careers will be closely related in the logic of one's overall character even if not in terms of conventional social categories.

  • karmesha-10 radix as it behaves in D-10 , shows the strength of public success in one's chosen field.

Karmesha-10 if weak in D-10, the profession maybe unrecognized, low status, marginal - not respected, not publicly authoritative despite being required for the orderly conduct of the social order.

Should radix karmesha-10 be nichha in D-10, naative is not much respected, even if the income is good.

karmesha-10 radix's role in D-10 will give more information about the total career profile.

  • Even if the career is weak, it will still exist. Everyone has some sort of leadership role, public responsibilities, and career.

karmesha-10 radix's role in D-10 . Provides further details of the weak or strong or conventional or odd character of the profession.

  • Confirm with radix karma-pati in D-10

  • Rashi . Exempli gratia, radical karmesha-10 in [nīcha] amza in D-10 for example suggests low confidence overall in public life.

  • Domain. Exempli gratia, radical karmesha-10 residing in bhava-2 of dashamamsha for example would suggest a career in speech + Language, record-keeping, telling stories/history, or exploring aspects of one's family history.)

  • Insights from D-9 and D-10 are not directly determinative, except for the role of lord of 10th navamsha which is definitive.

  • Insights from seeing the role of the D-1 bhava-pati as they take on a different character in the varga, are used to confirm and refine the core evaluations from the radix.

  • D-9 and D-10 = a confirming view of the career subject area of expertise and the environment. Exempli gratia, radical karmesha-10 in varga-9 or D-10's 4th house = an affinity for home/classroom. The native might be a professional schoolteacher if the radix indicators all point that way, and Ruler of the [10th navamsha] = Budha or Guru.

  • Yet, if radix indicators are not so strong toward professional educator identity+ karmesha-10 in bhava-4 of D-9 or D-10 can indicate a home-based business, or a home-schooling parent, or even a lifelong chronically ill homebound person. The radix indicators are determinative but varga must confirm or the prediction will be off the mark.

The Consultant

A sheep farmer is tending his flock when a city slicker rolls up in his BMW, hops out and asks," Hey, if I tell you exactly how many sheep you have, can I take one?"

The farmer nods, so the city slicker opens his laptop, calls up some satellite photos, runs some algorithms, and announces," You have 1,432 sheep."

Impressed, the farmer says," You're right. Go ahead and take one." So the city slicker loads one of the animals into the backseat of the car.

" Now," says the farmer," if I tell you what you do for a living, can I have it back?"

A gaming sort, the city slicker says," Sure."

" You're a consultant," says the farmer.

" Wow!" says the consultant." How'd you know?"

" Well," says the farmer," you showed up even though I never asked you to. You told me something I already knew. And you don't know anything about my business. Now give me back my dog."

Q: I've read that having one panch-maha-purusha planet guarantees a great career.

What do you think? I've got an oocha Shani as lagnesha that looks very promising.

A Namaste,

Having one super-strong planet [Shani] can give the nativity tremendous drive and focus. This graha may be so empowered that one can do any work at all in this world and do it well.

If Jyotisha practice is the goal, it is generally recommended to approach the study of Jyotisha in a balanced and systematic way with attention to principle and detail and according to your own account this is the same way you have approached other studies.

However, the nature of your eventual practice, if any, would conform to the karmesha-10 and 10th D-9 items (1) and (2) above.

I suggest that you make a complete inventory of those (1) and (2) attributes (and double-check (3) characteristics) including sign, house, drishti, and timing of Vimshottari dasha periods.

You may choose to enter consulting practice or you may choose to use Jyotisha as a private meditational practice, depending on what you conclude from (1) and (2) [and double-check (3)].

Other items such as lagna and lagnesha, chandra, budha et-cetera. are influential but ANY career foundation requires strength in (1) and (2) to achieve public validation of success.

I hope this opinion provides some structure for your continuing studies. Jyotisha is a vidya and its knowledge channels through the human personality .

If you can, to further your studies, i'd recommend obtaining several readings from different working Jyotiṣika to provide a range of viewpoints.

The knowledge tradition of Jyotishavidya is expressed differently through different Jyotiṣika personalities .

The Job Interview

A mathematician, an accountant and an economist apply for the same job.

The interviewer calls in the mathematician and asks " What do two plus two equal?"

The mathematician replies " Four."

The interviewer asks " Four, exactly?"

The mathematician looks at the interviewer incredulously and says " Yes, four, exactly."

Then the interviewer calls in the accountant and asks the same question: " What do two plus two equal?"

The accountant says, " On average, four -- give or take 10%, but, on average, four."

Then the interviewer calls in the economist and poses the same question: " What do two plus two equal?"

The economist gets up, locks the door, closes the shade, sits down next to the interviewer, and says, " What do you want it to equal?"

Q: Subject: Will he succeed in the " Insurance Sector" ?

Hello this is A* from India i have one question about insurance from which house we can predict about insurance, which planet is for insurance sector and in which condition person can ear money from insurance sector or commsion bassis work?

A: Namaste,

Generally speaking, insurance in the context of the modern insurance contract industry is indicated by bhava-8.

Randhrabhava represents pooled assets, undisclosed monies such as the joint assets of marriage, and the hidden treasuries of family members which might result in an inheritance for oneself.

Insurance settlements fall into the same cultural category as inheritances from the dead. Insurance settlements emerge from a large pool of shared monies. The total contents of that pool as well as the size of one's personal payment which emerges from the pool is usually a great mystery to the person who has purchased a single insurance policy.

  • Look to 8th-from kundali indriya-lagna and also 8th-from Chandra , and their bhava-lords, for insurance behaviors. A positive role in the nativity for vrishchika rashi (perhaps as lagna or lord of Chandra) is helpful.

  • For the administrative infrastructure of the insurance industry such as the writing of insurance policies, inspection appointments, traveling to the customer's site, discussing the details of the policy with the customer and with the insuring agency -- see 8th-from-8th, Sahaja bhava.

  • Written documents of all kinds, and the verbal discussions which precede and accompany the contract writing-editing process, the detailed claims process, and all of the massive commercial administration of the insurance sector, are represented by bhava-3 and its lord.

  • Economic earnings of any type whether salary, commissions, dividends, rents, royalties, absolutely all forms of income from the marketplace, are determined by 11th-from kundali indriya-lagna And the emotionally associative, community-linking, economically gainful, friendly, goal-oriented, socially-networked 11th-from-Chandra.

  • The karaka for earnings is Shani - earnings require effort! Shukra dhanakaraka for treasury containment, savings = a hoard of saved values fills the treasure chect, and luxuries (Shukra, sita, Laxmi) flow from capitalized savings.

  • Look to dhana bhava for conserved treasury (such as bank savings), look to labha bhava for earnings (such as salary, dividends). The relationship between bhava-2 and bhava-11 is a major determiner of treasuries overall. If the lords of bhava-11 and bhava-2 enjoy a parivartamsha yoga, the native will be very financially privileged as a result of high earnings combined with strong tendency to hoard one's wealth.

Karaka for the insurance industry = Shani. Shani indicates fear and negative expectations which lead to conservative, safety-oriented actions. The reason that customers purchase insurance policies = they are afraid of emergencies and catastrophic change ( 8) and they are trying to control [Shani] the material [Shani] circumstances of death ( 8).

If there will be violent catastrophe in a person's life, Kuja should have some connection to randhra bhava. Mangala is of course the natural regulator of bhava-8, so the native 's capacity to deal with the physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual reality of the turning of the cycle of birth and death (changes of external material form, emergencies, shocks) in the lifetime is determined by the randhresha and Mangala.

Professionals who deal skillfully with violent emergencies (military, fire-fighters, paramedics, midwives, emergency physicians, healers and shamans) typically have a strong and positive function of Kuja in their nativity.

Shani tries to resist and control sudden changes, but Kuja shows the style of positive action which one may express in response to matters of " sudden emergence" through the aperture point where the hidden astral plane pushes through into the visible physical plane = randhra (exempli gratia, childbirth).

  • Success in commission sales of insurance policies would require first and foremost a gifted placement for Budha (sales, conversation) and secondly a strong Shani (safety intelligence) along with a caring and steady Moon (concern for shelter and protection).

randhresha-8 should be strong but conservative for involvement with risk-management insurance sector. To determine income, look first to Vriddhi-pati-11 and see if the Vriddhi-pati-11 (and Vriddhi-pati-11 from Chandra) is connected with the functions of randhresha-8 (insurance) and bhratru-pati-3 (sales, business administration).

Also as always please consider the lord of the 10th navamsha which is a reliable although somewhat general predictor of lifetime career.

If one of the karaka mentioned above such as Budha for writing, administration, conversation, and sales or Shani for safety and resistance to change or Kuja for pro-active involvement with catastrophic and sudden changes should be the lord of your 10th navamsha, then you can expect to do well in insurance industry in a role which matches the portfolio of the ruler of 10th navamsha + 10th-from-Chandra + karmesha.

Best wishes for success in your Jyotisha studies,

Sincerely, barbara Pijan Lama, Jyotishavidya

An example from the USA industrial insurance industry .

Here is an example regarding insurance industry. The native is a risk-assessment expert in weapons-related" accidents " specifically explosives and holocaust industrial fires. He works in the south-eastern portions of the USA where entertainment" fireworks " and ballistic weapons manufacturing are concentrated.

Mesha = fire, weapons, competition = 10th navamsha and rogesha-6 conflict Kuja in D-1 lagna.

Voc4_insur_explos_D1D9.GIF

This man has become financially privileged via invisible matters, hidden risks, lurking violence which can be imagined (12) before it manifests (12) - dhanapati-2 Guru amplified by Rahu in 11th-from-2nd. Vriddhi-pati-11 Budha occupies bhava-2 providing the material variety (not the knowledge variety) of dhana-yoga = conservation (2) of earnings (11). Nearly everyone in his social network (11) is financially successful as well.

Right-place-at-right-time dharma-pati Chandra occupies Vṛścikaindriya-lagna. Although starting from a working-class childhood and battling an ongoing personality disorder (clinical narcissism) the native has achieved professional success in the role of executive process manager and industrial risk analyst for a major global insurance corporation.

Karakamsha bhava-4 housing, buildings, real properties, shelter, safety, protection, reliable rhythms. Shani bandesha-4 in lagna, resistance to sudden change.

The nativity features several excellent combinations for professional success in matters of lawfully preventing or regulating [Shani] eruptions of violent force [Mangala].

Vṛścika-Mangala is a primary significator of explosive force, catastrophic fires, and loss of life. (Mangala is a natural maraka.)

karmesha-10 Surya yuti yuvati-pati-7 Shukra (10th-from-10th, peer advising, leadership) indicate that his professional responsibilities (10) are concentrated and recognized in the area of administrative relationships and skills (Shukra-Surya-3). Surya-Makara is typically identified with large-scale lawful social structures such as institutions and corporate entities.

Budha Vriddhi-pati-11 provides economic profit from emergencies (Budha randhresha-8 ).

In middle age he served as a field manager (karmesha-10 profession in 3 management). In younger years, when Mangala was less mature, he was a military officer trained in explosives control. (Mangala matures age 28.)

A powerful concentration of Vṛścikagraha in his kundali indriya-lagna suggests that the interior personality is very much in conflict while the exterior performance is dynamic and driven to materially succeed. The drama of suppressing interior explosions would continue throughout life. Periods of the wise Dharmesha-9 Chandra would nonetheless suggest reiterations of the affection-withholding nishturabhashi yoga made highly adversarial by addition of the empowered rogesha-6 Mangala.

The native has enjoyed a decades-long and well-recognized administrative career which is distinguished by his willingness [Surya] to manage (3) a particular species of invisible (12) threat -" accidents waiting to happen" . (ruler-of-12 imagination in 3 management.) He deals with highly dangerous and volatile materials used in weapons manufacturing plants, but his job is to reduce and suppress [Shani] that risk. Chandra-Vṛścika [nīcha] suggests a natural emotional affinity for sudden explosive danger (cf. Albert Einstein designer of the nuclear bomb).

one's particular insurance specialty is underwriting for exceptionally [Rahu] dangerous operations, typically weapons manufacture. Nevertheless, he has enjoyed a successful lifetime career in the Insurance Sector, providing protection against loss from fire dangers. He manages potentially disastrous risks from the relative safety of an office job, with no harm to self. After 50 years in the industry, he is now comfortably retired.

Q: : Subject: Bad job karma

Hi Barbara,

I came across your website while I was surfing for information on Vedic astrology.

Your website is really comprehensive and I enjoy it very much.

I am still an university student and approaching graduation.

From my Vedic chart, ifound that the Sun (also my tenth lord) is in the twelfth house.

Would that mean I am unsuccessful in my job search for jobs in Commerce unless I apply to obscure job positions as part of my karma?

Thanks, sincerely, J

A: Namaste,

Thanks for your question.

No, the location of Sun in bhava-12 - even in nichha condition as you have it - does not mean that you would be unsuccessful in job search.

Many people with Surya in bhava-12 have excellent careers and professions in a variety of professions and industries.

Many of the high-visibility public figures whose nativities feature Surya-12 have demonstrated exceptional abilities in the expression of political entitlements [Surya] which strongly engaged the environments of 12, such as distant lands, sanctuary locations, research laboratories, quiet enclosures, spiritual retreats, private dealings, and invisible power.

Surya is only one of several career indicators in Jyotishashastra.

More important than Surya for career profile are various 10th-amsha

  • ruler of 10th navamsha
  • karma-pati

  • lord of dashamamsha

  • role of karmesha in the dashamamsha

  • role of karmesha in the navamsha.

Evaluating the job situation is actually quite complicated.

If brilliant Surya = karmesha-10 in bhava-12, it is necessary to have Vṛścika indriya-lagna in radix with Surya-Vanika .

Since Tula-Surya = nīcha , look for possible corrections to the weakness (such as a supporting drishti from a strong friendly graha, perhaps Kuja or Chandra) or some other astrological pattern which strengthens Surya.

Probably you will benefit from consciously working to develop your self-confidence and eliminate superstition and expectation that you must depend on others for your success.

Sometimes Surya-Vanika indicates that the father is not a strong support for public success. If that is the case, prepare to forgive the parents for their shortcomings. Intend to approach the world and adult life with confidence that is flowing from your direct connection with the divine.

Example: dad dies early, but 11th-from-Surya exceptionally strong bringing genius in languages and resources

  • Twilight of the Idols 1844-1900 Ubermensch Friedrich Nietzsche [Surya-12-Tula at zero degrees]. Dad was a local pastor who died when little Friedrich was only 4 years old. Yet Surya-Tula-12 enjoys parivartamsha yoga with Shukra-Simha-10, showing that dad's influence while invisible strongly shaped FWN's aesthetic. FWN's education was excellent and paid-for. Shukra rules 4th-from-4, schooling.

  • In adult life, scholar Nietzsche became famous for his writings about Values and Polarity [Tula] within western history. FWN's texts are unique (Ravi) rants on various psycho-cultural attempts over the millennia to balance the grand opposites [Tula] of the human psyche. His aesthetic philosophy continues to be studied in undergraduate humaniities courses, 150 years after its first publication.

Surya-12-Tula often develops a professional specialty in quiet, private areas of expertise such as closed-door arbitration, and psychotherapy -- particularly marriage counseling due to influence of Shukra. Also scientific research, or reflective interior practices are produced here. Surya-Vanika-12 is ghostlike, but still an active trader. One may be brilliant in the secluded, privatized specialty areas.

To determine the [situation for the forthcoming job search, it would be recommended to obtain your Vimshottari Dasha calendar and study it for information. Also keep in mind transits of heavy-mass graha and the transita of samchara upagraha Rahu-Ketur.

When Professor Surya's classroom occupies bhava-12, the student has some variety of expertise in international matters. Often one lives or works on sojourn, in a country/culture which is different from the country/culture in which one was raised. One enjoys a perception of being a foreigner, and socially one is aware of a certain distance between one's own viewpoint (Surya, eye) contrasted with the mainstream social environment.

At least for a few years in one's life and possibly for a lifetime (depending on the strength and bhava-rulership of Surya) one may live in a foreign country as a guest worker or non-citizen.

[Surya in bhava-12] = a supportive position for having a global perspective and for working with international organizations .

From these examples note that Surya-12 = not, in itself, aproblem for holding important jobs.

Surya is only one of nine graha which need to be considered to make a determination of job prospects or any other action in life. Obligatory actions may be revealed through a much more detailed analysis of the nativity.

Q: I've long thought of writing children' s books. Also parenting books on how to raise children. Would I be successful in this field? Are there other areas that would be favorable to focus on?

A: A successful published author must have strength in bhava-3 = writing plus strength in at least one other bhava-amsha

  1. strong configurations related to bhava-5 or Surya = creativity, naecessary for drama and fiction-writing, screenplays, songwriting

  2. if the intended application of the writers craft does not require creativity but rather accuracy, Exempli gratia, copywriters, or a behavior such as ability to meet deadlines is more important than the exquisiteness of the content, then bhava-3 should remain strong but look to other matching factors such as Shani for regulation, time-consciousness, government environments, structured routines.

    • For example, alifetime government publications worker could have this combination of 3-writing and 10-governing.

[Busy Bantering Budha] the karaka for writing should also be well placed.

These conditions are well met in your nativity due to [uchcha-Budha] conferring exceptionally high levels of analytical intelligence and Budha well placed for publishing endeavors, especially regarding emotional and parenting matters, in the emotionally talkative, communicative cohort instructive descriptive team-working administrative managerial announcing publishing reporting explanatory conversational lyrical messaging 3rd-from-Chandra . The focus is administrative, current-events, conversational, and short-term objectives. Not philosophical, historical, or academic.

  • Your plan for writing Children's books sounds like a good fit to the capacity and desires of Budha. bhratru-pati-3 from lagna = svakshetra Shukra , alovely harmonious balanced graha which is intensely focused on design rather than words. The combination of Budha (for the words) and Shukra (for the pictures and book design) might be very successful for children's book creation and publishing.

  • celebrated = 5. Kundali of successful published authors who write material that is brilliantly creative must ALSO have great strength relative to putra bhava = divine creativity. Here your nativity has a mixed situation. It is unlikely that you would rise to global prominence for literary achievement but your output may still be quite charming.

Best results for writing and publishing in any field and with any degree of creativity (including the rather mundane but huge and practical business of writing government documents, technical manuals etc.) = periods of:

  1. sahajapathi

  2. ruler of 3rd-from-Chandra

For the creative intelligence needed to generate brilliant concepts and the individual genius of authorship , look for periods of

  1. Vidyapthi-5

  2. Vidyapthi-5-from-Chandra

  3. Vidyapthi-5-from-Chandra has the most power to evoke maternal intelligence = knowing what children like to see and hear in a story.

vidya-pati-5 = [uchcha] Guru, karaka for children - it benefits the books to be for or about children! vidya-pati-5 Guru is yuti the ruler-of-12 Chandra, asignificator of" at home mothers " - moms at home with their small children, living out of the public eye in a child-centered fantasy world. Many naps : )

Guru occupies 8th-from-5th, which takes away the big fame and replaces high publicity with personal modesty and a luxurious home. Your books may be quite profitable but the audience would show their appreciation not with red-carpet celebrations but by buying your books and contributing to your personal wealth.

Life is More than Work

QUOTATION from

The Art of Happiness at Work , by Tenzing Gyatso with d. Howard C. Cutler, m.D. (1998, 2004)

" ...when seeking work, or if you already have a job, it is important to keep in mind that A human being isn't meant to be some kind of machine designed only for production. No.

  • Human life isn't just for work, like [a socialistic] vision where everyone's purpose is just to work for the state, and there is no individual freedom, where the state even arranges the person's vacations and everything is planned out for the individual.

That is not a full human lifer.

Individuality is very important for a full human life, and then accordingly some leisure time, abit of holiday, and time spent with family or friends. That is the means to a complete form of life ....

  • If your life becomes only a medium of production, then many of the good human values and characteristics will be lost -- then you will not, you cannot, become a complete person.

  • So if you're looking for work and have a choice of a job, choose a job that allows the Opportunity for some creativity, and for spending time with your family.

  • Even if it means less pay, personally I think it is better to choose work that is less demanding, that gives you greater freedom, more time to be with your family, or to do other activities, read, engage in cultural activities, or just play.

I think that's best."

The Art of Happiness at Work

" among Tibetans, at least traditionally, the economic conditions are such that this nine-to-five daily employment isn't really an important part of [working life].

In Tibet, either you are a farmer or a nomad or a merchant. The work is seasonal.... During the season they work very hard, and when they finish they come back and don't have any employment.

...in modern society, and particularly in industrialized nations, the issue of unemployment is a very difficult situation. There are no easy answers.

One has no choice but to try to cope, and make one's best effort to find new work. There is just no other solution.

However, the basic attitude of the individual plays a very significant role, and can make a big difference in how someone responds. While we may not have control over our situation, Our attitude is something that we have some control over.

  • So first, what we need to realize is that uncertainty and change are very much a part of the modern economy, particularly with regard to employment.

  • That is a serious problem, but a fact that we have to accept. There is no guarantee that there will be a job tomorrow if you are working today.

  • So, if we understand this ahead of time, it may change how we respond when that happens. Then we won't feel so surprised, as if we are singled out. We understand that the loss of a job has many factors, the result of many causes and conditions. We will understand that, in many cases, it may even have roots in global economic issues.

  • This way, we won't become so upset by taking it personally, or looking around us for someone to blame for our problems. This alone may help reduce our mental agitation.

of course, here we are talking about unemployment due to some wider causes or layoffs, not due to being fired because of one's own incompetencer.

So there might be different ways in which individuals will respond to the challenges of change .

What is important is to acknowledge this fact and try to work out how best to cope with the immediate problem itself.

  • For example, if you need employment as a means of your livelihood and if you become unemployed, then all your efforts should be put into looking for new employment so that your livelihood will be secure.

But there are two different responses.

  • One person may feel demoralized and become sort of paralyzed, thinking, there is no hope, ilost my job, what am I supposed to do?

  • But another individual in the same situation might look at it as an opportunity to make some changes. As a growth-challenge.

  • So that is the more positive way, the more proactive way of dealing with this problem.

But of course it is not easy.

There may also be other ways that might help at least reduce the mental anxiety of dealing with the situation, so that a person can use all their mental energy to find new work.

  • For Buddhists, there are certain thought processes and considerations that help -- for example, the belief in karma [one's actions] and ultimately taking responsibility for one's own karma.

  • Although this kind of mental attitude may not have any effect in physically resolving the situation, at least it will help ease the individual from the psychological effect of losing the job, and so on.

And of course, believers in other religious systems can also take some consolation in their own beliefs."

Q: How can I predict the timing of career promotion from the Vimshottari Dasha ?

A:

For career promotion, find the Vimshottari bhukti of the graha which is

(1) lord of the 10th bhava counted from the indriya-lagna

(2) lord of the 10th bhava counted from Chandra lagna

(3) lord of the 10th navamsha.

All of these periods are favorable for increased professional recognition, public visibility and gain of social entitlements.

There are several other factors to consider for example the angle between the mahadasha pati and the bhukti pati must be kendra or trine if lord of one of the 10th bhava (1,2,3 above) is atmakaraka it is much stronger, and if mahadasha pati is also one of the (1,2,3 above) it is also much stronger.

Lord of the D-10 dashamamsha -10 is supporting data not defining the navamsha or radix karmesha-10 becomes strong still if it is also the D-10's karma-pati.

Also there are additional factors of bala etc. For increased income, find the 11th angles.

The Busy Flight Attendant <

" The little boy (who had been looking out the window of the airplane) turned to his mother and asked, 'If big dogs have baby dogs, and big cats have baby cats, why don't big airplanes have baby airplanes?'

The mother (who couldn't think of an answer) told her son to ask the flight attendant, so the boy went down the aisle and asked the flight attendant. The flight attendant, who was very busy at the time, smiled and said, 'I saw you talking with your mom. Did your Mom tell you to ask me?'

The boy said, 'Yes she did.'

'Well, then, you go and tell your mother that there are no baby airplanes because Southwest always pulls out on time. Have your Mom explain that to you.'"

Principled Action at Work - It's in the Attitude <

QUOTATION

The Art of Happiness at Work by Tenzing Gyatso and Howard C. Cutler, m.D. (1998, 2004).

" Is is possible to practice principles of Non-harm in the modern workplace? How much responsibility can one assume for living out the principle at work?"

Dalai Lama:

" In the traditional [Tibetan] society, most people automatically did the types of work their families did -- nomads, farmers, merchants, and so on.

But some people still engaged in work that was not in keeping with the principle of non-harm, because there are butchers, metal smiths who make swords, and so on.

But these kinds of work were also generally hereditary."

Howard Cutler:

" Speaking of work and the implementation of the concept of non-harm, ... you mentioned that there was a rule in Tibet that any new invention had to guarantee that it was beneficial or at least not harmful for at least seven generations."

DL:

" ...there do seem to be certain practices and policies that successive Tibetan governments adopted in Tibet that reflect putting into practice certain Buddhist ideals, such as the Buddhist principle of respecting the natural world, particularly the animal world.

  • For example, all the communities living near the Yamdrok Lake used to rely heavily on fishing in the past.

  • Recently I heard about a policy that was adopted during the Fifth Dalai Lama's time where they were discouraged from fishing, and in order to compensate them, some other communities would band together and provide them an equivalent value in grain, so that they would be compensated against their loss.

  • Similarly, in the area near Mount Kailash, around Lake Manasarovar during a particular season, alot of waterfowl migrate there. They lay their eggs on the shores and apparently there was a government policy that during the egg-laying season, they would appoint people to watch over the eggs to make sure they were safe.

  • of course, there might be individuals who in addition to taking the salary probably ate some of the eggs as well. These things happen. But overall there is this kind of Attitude of non-harm.

" So, even though in Tibet, people didn't always follow the principle of non-harm in their work ... This principle was still deeply ingrained in the peopler.

In general, ithink this could be applied in the West. Although not everybody has options about the work that they do, at least I think it is good to give serious thought to the kind of work one does, and the impact it has on others.

I think it is best to choose work that does not cause harm to others, that does not exploit or deceive others, either directly or indirectly. I think that's the best way."
